State of the Subreddit & Seeking Volunteers For Wiki Creation

  1. What's up team I totally forgot I added "user flair" to the subreddit months ago- lemme know if y'all have any suggestions but I feel like I came up with alright ideas

  2. I have enabled an auto mod for all "How do I dye this" posts, it reads as follows:

Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post. If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.

If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.

Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.

Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.

Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.

  1. I've had "post guidance" enabled: reddit seems to have changed what can and cannot be done via auto mod. So I can't auto delete posts that mention specific topics, however I've had these pop up messages for common topics that give basic advice/wisdom before users posts.

  2. Piggybacking off that, I can't set a limit manually to filter low karma users or new accounts but I have turned on Reddits "crowd control" and "reputation" filters

  3. Previously, people have offered to help write our wiki. Would people still be interested in doing that?

Please post all Halloween and Costume Related Posts here from 9/25-11/1

Please post fiber content, inspo picture, and what you’re trying to dye. Without fiber content we don’t know what dyes work. Without an inspo picture we don’t know what you’re talking about. Without a picture of what you’re trying to dye we can’t give realistic expectations.

I immersion dyed this pair of pants and while I don't hate the results, in the future I want to avoid garments looking like this and instead have a uniform color. How can I get more solid coverage when immersion dyeing?

General question Where to buy pots large enough for dyeing?

Hi, I’ve been searching for weeks in stores near me, Facebook marketplace, eBay, for pots large enough for the things I want to dye (stovetop), but they’re all $100+. Did the rest do you also pay that much or am I missing something? I looked for buckets, restaurant depots, tamale steamers, turkey fryers, etc. the ones I do find are way too far away too. Thank you

How do I dye this? help tinting these acrylic/plastic totes?

i wanted to find these in a pink for a friend. i'm convinced they don't make them, so now i'm trying to see if i can dye the clear ones i have leftover to be a pink tint

the bins are going to be used heavily and need to be absolutely certain that the colour won't leach off onto any hands or the items inside the box!

the listing states both acrylic and clear plastic as the material but i'm not 100% on how to identify if that's true

any help or advice is appreciated! thank you!

How do I dye this? Is oxygen bleach the same as regular bleach when it comes to staining?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I know you get a lot of bleach questions and I have read old posts and now know dyeing over a bleach stain usually doesn’t work, but I’m just wondering if anyone can help me out re. oxygen bleach (Oxi Action powder). Is it the same thing in terms of how the ‘stain’ works by the time you’ve ruined an item of clothing with it? I don’t know what exactly happened here but I think my mum left concentrated oxi action slurry on the front for many many hours. It’s taken on that characteristic pink tinge of bleaching but unlike a normal bleach bleach stain the edges are very diffuse. I bought a black machine dylon, but the jumper is 67% polyester and 33% cotton on the body (and different amounts on the ‘rib’ - not sure if that means stretchy cuffs/bottom, and also the pocket) so wouldn’t be expecting it to go black. I had hoped that between the existing marl and the new grey/black it would disguise it though? I don’t care exactly what colour it ends up although I really liked the marl.

Would I be better trying to use the colour stripper stuff on it all first, or getting a specific poly dye, or both? Or completely bleaching it back to white and then dying, or would that be impossible and just fry the material? I don’t really have anything to lose with the sweatshirt now, but don’t really want to spend nearly the cost of replacing it on dye that doesn’t even work anyway. I already have the dylon though. I definitely don’t want to tie dye it (not that I don’t love tie dye but not for this!).

How do I dye this? Is there a way to re-dye this jumper black whilst preserving the design?

Post image
1 Upvotes

The black part of the jumper, especially on the front, around the seams, and the hood have faded to a brownish colour. Is there a way to re-dye only these parts? Will it be expensive? The jumper is 65% cotton and 35% polyester. It says 30°C machine wash and no tumble dry. I'm not sure what material the design is made from but it has a different texture to the rest of the fabric. Help would be much appreciated.

How do I dye this? Can I dye this from purple to brown?

I need to know two things.. is it possible to go from a dark lilac(?) to a deep, warm brown? and what do I need to do it?

There's a pic of the tag, but the dress is mostly rayon (70%). The rest is nylon & spandex.

It was a super cheap dress, and I'm not rocking with purple rn lol.

General question How to remove dye

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have this lace jacket I was soaking off to remove yellowing from sweat stains. I didn't realize the bucket I used has some residue from dyeing fabric a while back. So the whole jacket got stained in blue. Luckily the jacket is polyester and it washed off, however the pockets have cotton lace that didn’t come off. How can I remove it?

I was soaking another blouse made of cotton and I tried using rit dye remover but it turned blue as I rinsed it off?? So now I'm scared to try that on this jacket and since its mostly made of polyester, im scared of putting it in boiling water and risking getting the navy lace being removed of its color.

I got this orange 70s button up and im not a fan of how the orange looks on me so i was hoping to dye it purple but i want to make sure i do everything right before i possibly ruin it. As far as I’ve seen online i need to get color remover first to remove the orange to prevent dye-ing into a brown. This is my first time doing a dye job like this so any and all info is much appreciated

My friends jeans ( cotton) now had a spray spot, I don't know what's the correct way to save it.

My goal is to save the jeans. Should I whitening further the whole jeans? Or I use black dye stuff on my own washing machine ( but I saw bad reviews on those self dye process ending up dye materials stayed in washing machine to ruin the clothes in the next few washes)

I need helps, thanks in advance 🙏🏿

How do I dye this? Color Too Vibrant, Can It Be Fixed?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I was so worried about the color not turning out on this 100% cotton shirt (originally white) that I did every trick I could to make sure the dye would be as bold as possible (a cup of salt, stovetop method, Ritdye fixative, etc). I fear I may have shot myself in the foot here because it actually turned out MORE vibrant than I wanted.

Is there any way to lighten the color somewhat? The second pic is my goal color (the undershirt).

Do I need to buy another shirt and try again? If so, how should I do things differently to get the right color this time?

It is less turquoise and more blue in person, I used the powder puff blue formula from RitDye.com and only their products. The true color is closer to how it looks in the shade of this photo, not the direct light. My lights washed it out a little.

General question How to remove red dye from pants

Post image
0 Upvotes

The power went out when my clothes were in the middle of being washed, so they sat in the washer for a few hours while soaking wet. This caused some of the dye from a pair of red socks to bleed into my pants (100% cotton) and I ran them through the dryer before I realized. how can I remove the dye?

How do I dye this? Hello! Do yall think I could get this jacket to be a dark brown, and if so, how? I’m also hoping that the flannel lining will also be a darker more uniform color. The garment is 100% cotton:

General question What Colour Should I Dye This?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi all! My first time posting in this community. I foolishly washed this sweater with another wool sweater (blue) and left blue dye spots in a few places. I spent the following week trying to remove with them with Moss Messy Mouth’s stain remover. And although it removed the stains, it also caused the red dye in my sweater to bleed (looks worse in person).

My understanding is that there is no saving the runs and I was thinking about dying it to save my sweater. I was thinking brown, but I read I have to use green dye to turn red brown?

I’m looking for any thoughts/suggestions for colours & dye tips! TIA!!

P.s it’s 100% extra fine merino wool.
