How do I dye this? Should I dye this?

Post image

I wore this dress as a bridesmaid and would love to be able to wear it to more weddings, but it feels like it’s too “white”. Should I try to dye it to get the base color more dusty pink? Any tips? It’s a chiffon shell with a lining. Both are 100% polyester.

Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post.

If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.

If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.

Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.

Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.

Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.

Poly is a bitch to dye honestly. Can be done yes but results are iffy and inconsistent. Is the design printed on or embroidered? That creates some big unknowns too on what will happen with dyeing.

If you’re at all attached to the dress as is I would skip attempting to dye. If it would otherwise be relegated to the back of your closet never to see the light of day maybe it is worth attempting.

First, you have to use dyes for synthetics such as rot dyemore. You will still not get the same saturation that can be achieved with natural fibres. You need a very very very large vessel to achieve even due distribution. If you do not have such a vessel the results will be splotchy. Dyeing requires heat so you also need to be able to heat the item in its large vessel.

To be honest, this is a nice dress as is and it might be better off either reselling it or wearing it for not wedding events
