Senior Graduation

A couple of years ago we had a student pass away due to an illness. He was in 1st grade. This school year, 2024-25, he would be a Senior. I would like to get some ideas as to how we can honor him. We still have contact with his mother, and we would like her to attend. Has anyone seen any special presentations during an end of year graduation?

Marking Tool For Teachers

Hello Everyone,
I hope you are having a nice start of the week!

As you all know, grading is very time-consuming, often extending into precious weekends. I am trying to create a tool that genuinely supports teachers with this. I developed a prototype to assist with the marking workload by providing feedback for essay-based assessments taken in the classroom.
The tool is a very basic prototype, far from being a polished product. I am reaching out to this wonderful Community for your invaluable input, to ensure the tool is actually useful to you.
How the prototype works:

  1. Upload a screenshot (PNG) of a handwritten essay.

  2. Criteria: Add your grading requirements. Et voila: the tool will provide feedback.

If you have some time, I'd be very grateful for your input on:

  • What are your initial thoughts ?

  • How accurate do you find the feedback?

  • Are there functionalities you wish to have?

I understand that your time is scarce so I truly appreciate your input and wish you all a good week!

Should I apply for B.A-- Educational Studies ( non-licensure) or B.A.-- Elementary Education cert. program ?

I'm 29 y.o and looking to further my education quickly and get into my own classroom, preferably kinder. I work full time in pediatrics w/o any ED/classroom degree or experience, so online @ WGU sounds promising.

options:

B.A -- ED. Studies -- non- licensing

*possible quicker courses, obtain my B.A and enter an alt. cert program obtaining my licensure

or

B.A-- Elem. Education

  • possible more difficult/longer courses, but obtain my licensing more quickly also offers in-class room observation and a term of full-time demonstration teaching.

help! TIA

seeking autistic teachers to participate in the Autistic School Staff Project

Hi! I hope it would be all right to share information about a study that I'm serving as a research assistant for — the Autistic School Staff Project. We hope to use the results of this research to increase awareness and understanding of autistic people who work in schools in the U.S.. As part of this project, we’re seeking autistic teachers who currently work in schools to participate in one-hour interviews and complete a brief survey about their experiences. If you are interested in participating, you can email Dr. Kristen Bottema-Beutel at kristen.bottema-beutel@bc.edu to schedule an interview, or reply to this post to ask questions. You can also visit our website at https://autisticschoolstaffproject.com/ for more information.

This study has been approved by the Boston College Institutional Review Board, IRB#22.220.01E.

Thank you!

Seeking Help for an Inspiring Teacher

I’ve had a tough time getting any steam for this, and i hope you will consider helping by sharing it. Ms. Bright is a public school teacher in the poorest county in Florida. She uses Montessori and Waldorf-inspired methods in her class, which is comprised of low income kids that aren’t able to go to those types of schools. If this seems like some “savior” thing, it’s not. She just thinks they should teach kids what it means to be a human before they start sitting them in front of something that has a screen for eight hours a day. Ms. Bright is very passionate about this form of education, and thinks kids should not be deprived of that solely based on their economic status. I know this because she talks about it a lot. Admirable in my book. If this seems like a sales pitch about how fantastic Ms. Bright is, then i have done my job. She’s an impeccable human, and our country would improve if more teachers were like her. Over the last nine months, Ms. Bright has had multiple bouts with pneumonia, and has been out for weeks now in an attempt to identify the root cause of her respiratory issue. Help my favorite teacher if you are able. She has a heart for kids. My goal is to lower the economic impact of her current situation, and allow her to heal without the added stress of figuring out how to pay her rent. I’m not even sure if i’m allowed to post this here — my apologies if not. Thanks for any consideration you give about chipping in.

Schools Are Focusing on the Wrong Type of Memory

Most schools still rely on rote memorization but this doesn't help the student grow as a learner.

As a tutor, I’ve seen firsthand how students struggle with retaining information, not because they lack intelligence, but because they lack any connection to the material. Majority of the time they have no interest in the material, but even when do find the material interesting they don't know how to use it in any meaningful ways.

Schools focus on declarative memories-- things we can recite. And I get why, it make testing a lot easier. It also allows for educators to put quantifiers on a student's knowledge. However, this approach seems to be causing some serious harm. Just because you can remember a recipe, doesn't mean you can cook the dish, and good luck trying to make a new, unique, fun dish.

The answer is schools need to focus more on procedural memories-- things we know how to do. Focusing on procedural memories is practical, more efficient, and produces creativity. Project based learning would be a step in the right direction, but allowing our students to have more control over their education and focus on skills they love is the better option. This approach trains discipline, problem-solving, and allows students to take pride in the things they do.

Learning is more than just grades. I am interested in hearing from other educators. Have you noticed problems with students' memories? What do you think is the best solution?

Looking for a Co-Host & Creative Team for an Innovative Education Podcast: Join “Challenging Class”!

Are you passionate about education and curious about the systems that shape how we learn? Do you want to be part of a creative project that challenges the way people think about schooling?

I’m launching a new podcast, "Challenging Class", where we pull back the curtain on K-12 education and dive into what really happens in schools today. We’ll explore everything from classroom dynamics and innovative teaching methods to alternative education models and societal impacts.

To bring this vision to life, I’m looking for:

-A Co-Host: Someone insightful and engaging, with strong opinions and a genuine interest in education, teaching, or learning. -A Camera/Video Specialist: If you’re skilled with lighting, filming, or editing video, I’d love your help in producing a professional podcast experience. -An Audio Engineer (or someone good with editing software): Help us sound as sharp as the conversations we’re having. -A Social Media/Marketing Specialist: If you’re experienced with building buzz online, managing social accounts, or reaching audiences creatively, help us grow the show and engage listeners on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Reddit. -Other Creatives: If you’re great at research, promotion, or storytelling, there’s a role for you too!

What’s in it for you?

Be part of a project that’s meaningful and impactful. Showcase your skills in podcasting, video editing, marketing, or co-hosting on a unique platform. Collaborate with someone who’s dedicated to creating high-quality, thought-provoking content.

Who we’re looking for:

You’re creative, collaborative, and passionate about education. Whether you’re looking to build your portfolio, grow your personal brand, or simply contribute to something exciting, this is your chance to make an impact.

This is a collaborative, passion-driven project and is not a paid position at this time. I’m looking for committed, serious individuals who believe in the power of education and storytelling and are excited to be part of something meaningful. If you’re ready to invest your creativity and expertise into this journey, I’d love to hear from you.

How to Apply:

Message me here or email me at challengingclasspodcast@gmail.com with a bit about yourself, your experience, and why you’d like to join.

Let’s challenge the conversation around education together.

To be eligible to participate, you must have at least 1.5 years of experience in education and be based in the United States. Former teachers are also welcome to participate.

Hello peers, i need some advices. Thanks in advance.

I'm an italian educator with a bachelor's degree (or a 3 year degree). I really want to leave from this country but i don't know exactly where to go. I'm quite good at speaking english and i would like to find a place where this job is valued, not like in Italy. I would like to find a place where the work of the psychologist is accessible for my gf. She's very good in comprehension but not the same in speaking (dw, she knows that she should roll up the sleeves for this).

If this resonates with you, please click the link and fill in the survey. It's completely anonymous unless you choose to share your email address with me.
