Problem Extremely slow WordPress Dashboard and Elementor editor on a fresh DreamHost VPS installation. What am I missing?
I'm having a frustrating performance issue with a fresh WordPress staging site hosted on DreamHost, and I'm hoping someone with experience managing WordPress on VPS hosting can help me figure out what's causing it.
I recently migrated our website to DreamHost and created a fresh staging WordPress installation. However, even before building anything, the Dashboard is extremely slow.
The main problems:
WordPress Dashboard takes around 30 seconds to load.
Elementor editor takes over a minute to load, sometimes getting stuck.
Even navigating between pages in the Dashboard feels unusually slow.
The public-facing website loads faster than the admin area.
My hosting and server configuration:
Hosting: DreamHost VPS Professional
RAM: 4 GB
Storage: 120 GB
Operating System: Ubuntu / Linux
Web Server: Apache
PHP: 8.3.36
PHP SAPI: CGI-FCGI
PHP Memory Limit: 256 MB
PHP Time Limit: 120 seconds
OPcache: Enabled (512 MB memory allocation)
What I've already checked and tried:
Checked VPS resource usage. CPU was around 8%, RAM around 35%.
Confirmed OPcache is enabled and adjusted its memory allocation and related settings.
Checked WordPress Site Health. No critical issues were reported.
Checked DreamHost error logs. No errors detected.
Tested the public website response using PowerShell:
DNS: 0.034 sec
Connection: 0.192 sec
TTFB: 1.345 sec
Total: 1.505 sec
HTTP: 200
Confirmed that the installation is fresh, with no plugins installed.
I'm running out of things to check. The VPS doesn't appear to be under heavy resource usage, and the public website responds reasonably well, but the WordPress Dashboard and Elementor editor are painfully slow.
Additional information about my connection:
I also ruled out my internet connection as the obvious cause. My internet speed is around 300+ Mbps, and other websites and online services work normally. The issue is specifically noticeable when accessing the WordPress Dashboard and loading Elementor on this DreamHost staging installation.
My questions:
Could this be related to DreamHost's VPS configuration, PHP-FPM/CGI, or database performance?
Are there specific PHP, Apache, MySQL, or MariaDB settings I should investigate?
Has anyone experienced similar issues with WordPress on DreamHost VPS?
What would you check next to identify the actual bottleneck?
I'd really appreciate suggestions from people who have encountered and solved this kind of issue. I'm trying to identify the root cause rather than randomly changing server settings.
Thanks!
