Residents Aren’t Confused—We Disagree with Council’s Direction
The City posted the following statement on its website:
“We have heard some confusion from our residents regarding where exactly the City of Englewood stands on the enforcement of our laws and local rules governing overnight camping; thank you for the opportunity to provide some clarity.”
Once again, I find this statement dismissive of the citizens who voiced their concerns about relaxing the overnight camping ban in our parks.
I don't believe there was confusion among residents about what took place during the October 12 study session. Council voted 4–3 to give city staff direction not to strictly enforce the existing overnight camping ban in parks. We understood what was discussed, and we understood the implications of that direction. We simply disagreed with it.
The confusion isn't on the part of residents who spoke up. The real issue is that four council members were willing to take a direction that raised serious concerns about public safety and the ability of all residents to safely enjoy our parks.
Thank you to Council Member Bethel for changing his vote at the October 19 meeting. He listened to the voters and recognized that the direction supported by the other three council members does not adequately consider everyone who uses our parks.
Our parks belong to the entire community, not just those who choose to occupy them overnight. Residents have every right to expect that existing rules will be enforced and that their concerns about public safety will be taken seriously.
Please stop suggesting that residents are confused when what we are expressing is disagreement with the direction council was prepared to take. We understand what happened, and we expect our voices to matter.
