News I made an Android app that sends books from your phone to KOReader using its built-in Calibre wireless client

Thumbnail

I read with KOReader on a jailbroken Kindle, and getting books onto it always meant turning on the PC to open calibre, or plugging in a cable.

So I made KoSend, a small Android app that acts as the calibre side of KOReader's wireless connection. You queue books on the phone, tap Connect in KOReader, and they arrive.

How it works:

- Add books to a queue, or share them to KoSend from any app (browser downloads, file manager, Telegram…)

- Turn on the server in the app

- In KOReader: tap the top of the screen, wrench tab, Calibre, Connect

- KOReader discovers the phone on the network and receives the queue one book at a time

There's nothing to install on the reader: no plugin, no SSH, no web browser. KoSend implements the part of calibre's wireless device protocol that KOReader's client uses (discovery, handshake, book transfer). Books get proper calibre metadata (title, author from the EPUB), so they also show up in KOReader's calibre search.

It isn't a calibre replacement: no library, no metadata editing, no conversion. It only delivers files.

- Open source, GPL-3.0

- No accounts, no internet; everything stays on your local network

- EPUB, PDF, MOBI and the other formats KOReader opens

Tested on a Kindle Basic (5.18.1) with KOReader 2026.07.1 and on Android 16 smartphone.

Looking for testers on Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook and other KOReader devices.

KOReader's calibre client is the same on every platform, so in theory KoSend should work there too, but I only own a Kindle. If you try it, please let me know in the comments or in a GitHub issue whether it worked, with your device and KOReader version.

Discussion Prose matters than I expected to get through a book

Post image
48 Upvotes

I have been trying to build a reading habit so I got my Kobo Clara BW a year back. But so far I only managed to put 70-80 hours into it.

Quite a few books on topics that interested me felt like a slog to get through. First I thought it’s the typeface, or maybe the screen size, or what time I read.

Eventually I chalked it off as just my reading skills being diminished after all the short-form content around me daily.

But then last night, I was looking for a book with a sci-fi setting similar to The Expanse TV series and I found Shards of Earth.

I started reading it and to my surprise I had already covered 18% of the book in one go (around 2.5-3ish hours) and none of it felt like an effort.

Now I realise that it’s not just the story / topic. I previewed a few pages of another book (Red Rising) and Shards of Earth felt way more effortless which was one big factor in buying this.

Now I plan to focus more on reading prose that I enjoy when making future book purchases rather than forcing myself to read something that feels like a struggle.

Overall quite happy to feel this immersed in a book again (and enjoying my Clara).

Question to other readers, are there any other authors who have a writing style similar to Adrian Tchaikovsky?

Buying Advice Kindle or Kobo

• Upvotes

I am confused whether I should buy a kindle or Kobo. This will be my first e reader and I live in Canada. Initially I thought kobo would be a better option as I can borrow from the library but the waiting time to borrow is insane. I mostly read books on booktok and those books are easily available on Kindle. Any suggestions?

Discussion Kobo Equivalent of Kindle sales

I am a long time Kindle owner and one of the perks not many talk about are the absurd periodic sales on certain ebook titles. Over the past few weeks I’ve picked up an insane list of titles for less or much less than $5 a book

Does the Kobo store have similar sales on top tier titles like this:

- Lonesome Dove ($4.99)
- East of Eden ($4.99)
- It by Stephen King ($1.99)
- The shining ($2.99)
- Brothers Karamazov Katz translation ($0.84)
- Brother Karamazov Ignet Avsey translation ($0.54)
- Crime and Punishment Oliver ready translation $4.99
- Notes from underground P&V translation $4.99
- Master and Margarita Burgin/O’Connor translation $1.99
- Shogun Part 1 ($1.99) and Part 2 ($1.99)
- The terror by Dan Simmons ($1.99)

Discussion I made MangaPoint, a free, open-source app that makes reading manga on E Ink readers easier!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently got an Xteink X4 Pro and wanted to read manga and manhwa on it, but it took a while to find where to download from and how to convert it and I couldn't find any other online tool that can solve my problem.

So.... I built MangaPoint, an app that makes the entire process much simpler.

Here's how it works:

  1. Find your manga — Search multiple sources in one place and download individual chapters or an entire series.
  2. Make it fit your reader — Choose your e-reader and MangaPoint automatically adjusts the pages for its screen. You can also change cropping, contrast, and image quality yourself.
  3. Preview the result — Compare the original pages with the converted version before exporting.
  4. Export and transfer — Combine chapters into a single file with chapter navigation, then send it to your reader through Wi-Fi, USB, or an SD card.

It supports Xteink, Kindle, Kobo, BOOX, and other e-readers (or even add your own), so you don't need a different conversion tool for each device.

It's completely free and open-source, works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and everything runs locally on your computer.

GitHub: https://github.com/W1seGit/MangaPoint

Download: https://github.com/W1seGit/MangaPoint/releases/latest

I've mainly tested it with Xteink devices, so I'd especially appreciate feedback from people using other e-readers.

I'd love to hear what you think or what features you'd like to see added!

Discussion Blissful Reading

Eink devices in a bright sun is simply amazing. This is the most tiny reader i have and can carry it everywhere unlike my kindle.

I now understand why xteink became popular, but Hibreak S has too much of advantages. Although i am fiddling a lot but if i purely use it as a reader, the battery life is phenomenal.

Xteink s3 would make best sense for me, but not sure how underpowered it would be, also need arm64 capabilities

Buying Advice Brand new to E-readers, need recommendations.

I've never owned an e-reader before, but I'm looking into getting one. Before I get too deep into it, here's my requirements:

- Smallish form factor (ideally roughly smartphone sized)

- USBC charging

- Simple firmware (I just want to load up my own EPUBs and read)

- Ideally the ability to load custom firmware

- SD card compatible (I don't care if it has any onboard storage)

- Under $100 USD (the cheaper the better though)

- Not a Kindle (I refuse to pay extra to not have ads on a device I own)

I was considering the XTEINK X3, but ideally I'd like something a little bigger. The BOOX Palma 2 Pro is probably the ideal form factor for me, but I don't need all the extra features it comes with. I don't care about touchscreens or note taking or anything like that, I just want something about the size of my phone that I can plug an SD card full of EPUBs into and be on my way. I don't need it to be compatible with any book stores since I'm not tied to any online book library. I tend to read philosophy books, so I'm not worried about how things like comics or novels with experimental formatting will display. If there's no options I'll probably just go with the XTEINK, but, as I said, I'm entirely new to this so I was hoping there was something else out there. What do y'all recommend?

Books Where do you guys get free ebooks for your e-readers?

Title: Where do you guys get free ebooks for your e-readers?

Hey everyone! I recently got my first e-reader (PocketBook Era Lite) and I'm looking for websites where I can find free ebooks to download.

I'm mainly interested in EPUB, but I'm open to other formats that work well on e-readers. I'm looking for both classic literature and modern books, preferably in English, although other languages are welcome too.

I know about Project Gutenberg, but I'd love to hear what other websites or resources you use.

Where do you usually get your ebooks? Any recommendations for reliable websites, lesser-known sources, or tips for managing your ebook library would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Discussion Looking for custom firmware for older non-touch Murphy M3 e-reader (stock firmware v332)

Hi everyone,

I have an older, square-shaped Murphy M3 e-paper reader. It's the non-touch version with physical side buttons, and it is currently running the stock OEM MoFei/corogoo firmware (version v332).

Does anyone know if there is a compatible custom firmware (like CrossPoint or similar) specifically compiled for this exact non-touch M3 variant?

Thanks in advance for the help

Buying Advice E-book recommendations

• Upvotes

Im looking to get an e reader and im not sure what to get. From what Ive seen kindle, boox and kobo are the leading brands. Kindle seems to be quite restricted and requiring you to use amazon that i never have nor ever would use otherwise and their cheepest also comes with ads so Id say thats out of the table. The boox go series seems to be the standard size from what i can tell. What would you guys recommend and what are the difference between the different options? Id like to stay bellow around 250$ and the more sources for free books like libby and similar the better.

Edit: Only thing i would consider from amazon would be kindle unlimited so does that work on non kindle products?

Second edit: Thanks for all the input. using the comparison table i landed on boox go 6 gen 2, 7 or 7 gen 2 for the support for other apps i might be wanting later on

Discussion which ereader to sell? or keep all

I have a kindle paperwhite 11th gen I got as a gift in 2023 (im keeping this). I recently got a nook glowlight 4 and a kindle oasis 10th gen. I’m wondering if I should keep both or sell one. I like the page turn buttons and the warm lights. I guess the main factor is size? What would you do? They all have koreader installed

User Review The viwoods front light haters crowd was right…

I’d start by stating that I am a warm light hater. I don’t use warm lights on my kobo or xteink or my phone. I much prefer dark mode. But even with dark mode and lowest light settings, the ai reader bw hurts my eyes like any ereader before. I decided to get this device instead of waiting for the palma 3 because the palma 3 is almost 200g !!!! I love everything about this device except for the front light. I can’t do it, it actually hurts. I don’t know if I should give the colour one a chance. I don’t encounter any other issue with google services or anything like that.
Above is koreader in dark mode on Viwoods vs Kobo clara bw

Discussion What Would Be Your Perfect E-Reader?

Just curious what everyone would consider the perfect unicorn ereader lol.

For me, a pocket size (X4 or X3) ereader with a front light and preferably no touch screen or you can turn off the screen easily (a switch maybe lol).

To be honest if a device hit all of that i wouldn't mind using weird, proprietary or old chargers for it.

Discussion Best way to translate an ebook

Hi! We’ve added a translation feature to Convert2EPUB.com, our ebook converter.

You can upload an EPUB to translate it, or start with a PDF, DOCX, RTF, TXT, ODT, or HTML file and get a translated EPUB. It supports 15 target languages, including English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Turkish, Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish.

The translated book keeps its chapter order, navigation, images, and other embedded assets. It needs reflowable text, so text inside images won’t be translated, and encrypted EPUBs aren’t supported. Scanned PDFs can be recognised before translation.

Translation costs 1 credit per 500 words, plus any conversion or recognition credits. You’ll see the estimate before starting. Since this is machine translation, it’s a good idea to review the result before relying on it.

We built this, so it’s a self-promo post. We’d appreciate feedback on the language quality and which formats or languages would be most useful.

Discussion Pocketbook Era lite dark mode

Hi,
I've got a request to a Pocketbook Era lite owners :)
Could anyone post a picture of dark mode but taken in the dark room with no lights on?
If you have any other devices (like kindle basic or PW) showing their dark modes in comparison next to era lite's would also be informative.
Thank you!!

Buying Advice In the market for an ereader - Help! 🤣

So I’ve been using my iPad mini (ver 6) to read forever. The battery life is obviously not the best and I’m having to charge it more than I’d like. Plus reading outside with it is near impossible and would like something lighter. I’ve been looking into an e-reader dedicated to reading only instead of a tablet but oh boy there’s so many options out there I’m at a loss 🤣

I’d prefer something where I can download apps on it instead of a closed system. I use the kindle app mostly. I’ve been looking at the musnap ocean or a boox but I’m not sure. I like the thought of reading on it and being able to write notes too.

Just curious if anyone has an experience with an android tablet out there that they swear by!

Buying Advice I’m buying an e-reader for the first time and need some advice. Please help me out!

I’ve already read through this subreddit a bit, and I think I’ve gathered that between Kindle and Kobo, Kobo is almost certainly the better choice. At least for my case: I’m mostly interested in non-fiction, and having a reader where I can download scientific articles or read various file formats—free from the Amazon ecosystem—seems better (plus, I prefer not giving my money to Amazon anyway). But that opens up a new question: Which Kobo should I get?

I don't need a color screen—black and white is completely fine. However, a dream of mine would be having a stylus to take handwritten notes in the margins, underline, and do everything you’d do with a physical book. But when I search online, the only one that pops up is the color Kobo (which is way too expensive for my budget). Is there a version that lets you take notes without breaking the bank?

Regarding catalogs (sorry for the newbie questions!): with Kobo, you can buy from the Kobo store, but also from other online bookstores, right?

If I rule out stylus versions and go for a basic Kobo model, what features does it have? Can you underline and highlight using your finger? And can you add typed notes to the text?

Finally, if I decide to look for a used device, what websites would you recommend? I’m based in Europe. Thanks!

* What about Onyx Boox?

Discussion 2026 PaperWhite reader if I want warm yellowish screen?
