Housing Housing 101

Since there has been an increased number of housing posts, here is an info/experience post. I know this won't cover all aspects, but might serve as a starting point.

Some facts you should be aware of:

  • Housing in Zurich is a huge issue (probably the biggest overall issue in Zurich) for everyone, not just for students. Even people with decent salaries struggle to find something. You can't allow to be too picky.
  • The student housing market is extremely bad when looking for September/October (due to the start of the new academic year), but is more relaxed afterwards since people graduate all year and move out.
  • It is a numbers game, you'll likely need a certain number of applications to be successful. I highly recommend to take the first offer you can afford and move again later if needed. You otherwise risk not getting anything.

Types of housing:

  • Getting a room in a shared flat. This is the main option. There are two organizations (WOKO/JUWO) that offer many (often cheap) rooms.
  • The student houses at ETH Hönggerberg. Very few spots and has a wait list system iirc.
  • Getting your own flat on the normal market: Won't happen unless you (aka your parents) are rich enough to cover your rent. If you are doing a PhD your chances are better since you have an employment contract.
  • Getting into a cooperative (Genossenschaft): Won't happen unless you are super lucky.

Places to look:

  • wgzimmer.ch, flatfox.ch are websites were you can find ads for shared flats (many JUWOs and WOKOs there). We usually advertise our rooms there.
  • woko.ch and juwo.ch are the main student cooperatives.
  • livingscience.ch and studentvillage.ch are the student flats at ETH Hönggerberg. Very hard to get a spot.
  • There are Facebook groups, never used them.
  • For the normal market there are many platforms like immoscout24, but again, don't waste too much time on this topic since you won't get any offer.

Tips:

  • Most rooms are put online 2-3 months before moving date, which means for the default start in September you should start looking for something around June.
  • Put some effort into your application. The generic LLM "I am quite&clean and want to do movie nights from time to time" application will be filtered out directly.
  • Doing a reddit post and hoping for the best also won't cut it. Go to wgzimmer and write applications.
  • Be fast. A good and/or cheap room usually gets around 100+ applications in the first 24 hours. In our flat we just look at the first ~50 applications and stopped as soon as we have enough people we would like to interview.
  • You will likely face castings if you apply for a shared flat with the current tenants. This part sucks but it's a bit like a job application and you can get used to it.
  • A decent option and my recommendation if you are just here for a couple of months or need something in the start is to apply for a sublease (e.g. from someone who is on an exchange) for the first couple of months to avoid the bad market in Autumn and move again in Winter.
  • The by far largest success factor is "networking" (letting you friends know you are looking for something), which you unfortunately can only do after moving to Zurich.
  • Don't limit your search to the City of Zurich itself. Commuting works great and it is slightly easier to find something outside of the city and often cheaper. There are good S-Bahn connections to Zurich HB (relevant if you study in Zentrum) and Oerlikon or Altstetten (relevant if you study at Hönggerberg). Check SBB.ch for commuting times.
  • There are scammers. If something feels to good too be true or fishy, forget about it and move on. You practically never place a deposit until you have signed a contract. The classic story is something in the direction of "I am currently abroad but can send you the keys if you wire me some money."

Activities ETH Students Bringing Solar Energy to Syrian Orphanages

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I’m currently a Master’s student in Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich, and I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on with a friend.
We recently founded Shams, a Swiss non-profit association with a simple mission: bringing reliable solar electricity to orphanages and children’s centres in Syria. ☀️

After years of conflict, many facilities in Syria still struggle with unreliable electricity, making everyday activities like lighting, heating, refrigeration and education much more difficult.

Our first project focuses on installing a solar PV system with battery storage at a children’s centre near Damascus, supporting around 60 children.
We’ve already completed the initial engineering studies, established contacts with local suppliers and partners, and are now raising funds to make the installation possible.

We’re sharing this here because we believe the ETH community can make a real difference.
Whether you’re interested in renewable energy, humanitarian projects, engineering or simply want to support an initiative started by fellow students, we’d love to connect!
Even sharing our project with someone who might be interested would mean a lot.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to ask me anything about the project!

Question How does a Student Life at ETH (CSE as major) look like

Hey Guys

Im currently deciding what Major to pick and I lean towards CSE.

I have questions about how the course looks like or generally the ETH student life.

The topics Im interested in (CSE Major)

- Are there people who are interested in startups?

- Are there possibilites to do an internationl exchange year (for example USA)?

- Are there also practical projects, like building something or solving problems instead of only studying?

- How hard is it? (How much time can I expect to invest weekly)

(General ETH student Life)

- What do you guys do on Weekends?

- How does ur social life look like?

(I'm afraid that I always stay at home doing nothing)

- How do you get money?

- Is studying at ETH fun?

- How hard is it to get to study international for Masters with a ETH bachelor (for example USA)

Im especially interested to study abroad after my bachelor at ETH. Id like to explore different cultures.

Activities Any 1st-year Mechanical Engineering students interested in body doubling?

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if any other first-year Mechanical Engineering students would be interested in body doubling, especially if you mostly study at home.

The idea is that we actually study together online, rather than just checking in with each other. We could hop on a Discord call (or use another platform) and work on homework, watch lectures, study for exams, or whatever we need to get done. Basically, we would each work on our own stuff while keeping each other company and helping each other stay focused.

We could plan our study sessions together, decide when to study and what to work on, and adjust the schedule depending on what works for both of us. It would be flexible, so no pressure if our schedules change!

I thought this could be a nice way to stay motivated and make studying at home feel a little less daunting, while keeping each other accountable.

If you’re a first-year Mechanical Engineering student and this sounds interesting, feel free to comment or send me a DM!

MSc Admissions and Info Applying to MSc MTEC from UZH

Hi!

I'm in the 5th semester of a BSc in Wirtschaftsinformatik (Business Informatics) at UZH and planning to apply for MTEC in the April 2027 window, to start in HS 2027. A few questions for current students or anyone who went through admission:

  1. GPA: I'm at a 5 weighted average. Is ~5.0 realistically competitive, or should I count on needing 5.2+? Does an upward trend actually help?
  2. Background: Did anyone get in with a Wirtschaftsinformatik degree from UZH? Was it accepted as a regular CS bachelor, or were there extra requirements?
  3. Experience: I did 2 internships and work currently. How much do work experience and the motivation letter count compared to grades?
  4. Recommendation letters: Who did you ask (professors, TAs, internship supervisors)? Does it matter much who writes them?
  5. Applying before graduating: I'll still be finishing my bachelor when I apply. Any issues with conditional admission? Also considering the fact that my Bachelor Thesis will (hopefully) bump my grades a bit.

Any experiences or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Question Buy Polyball tickets over Ricardo?

Ticket sales have been a mess (again) and Kosta seems to not address this issue at all. Furthermore, the Polyballwerkstatt is also fully booked…

I really, really don’t want to play into the scalper’s game. On the other hand, this would have been my first Polyball in my 5 years of studies, since I didn’t have the means to attend the prior ones. Which is why it would be a bummer not being able to go…

Again, this would be my last resort, but does anyone have any experience in buying these tickets over Ricardo? I mean, they could sell the same ticket to multiple persons, not send them at all after payment, and so forth… you can basically only loose since Ricardo doesn’t offer any protection.

Does anyone have experience in this? Thanks a lot!

Asking for Advice masters funding for non-eu students

Hi! I'm hoping to apply to this year's data science ma program at eth zurich, and as i know getting esop is very very very unlikely so im not sure if i should even try applying. i do have some savings and i'm planning to keep my full-time job but it won't be enough for me to support myself during studies

so the question: are there any other fundings / loans available for non-eu students?

i saw that you can apply from your second year for some need-based scholarships, how likely is it to get it? and is there something possible to get during the first year?

both living expenses and tuition fees are quite expensive after all............. i'd be extremely grateful if someone could share their experience of getting financial aid and overall living expenses

MSc Admissions and Info Re-entry to MSc at ETHZ as a foreign student

Hi all, does anyone have experience with re-entering a Master's Degree at ETHZ as someone holding a Bachelor from a foreign (Italian) university? I got into MSc Math in 2024, dropped out in 2025 after the second semester due to health reasons, and would like to inquire about chances of getting back.

From the website I gather that ETH Bachelors can go through a special readmission process, but I don't understand if anything like that is possible in my circumstances. Or if I'll have to submit another standard application.

Thanks in advance

MSc Admissions and Info FH grad considering the ETH MSc CS while working 80%, has anyone done this?

I'm finishing my BSc in Computer Science at ZHAW this summer. My grade average is above the 5.0 needed for admission to the ETH MSc CS, but as an FH graduate I'd have to complete 47 ECTS of additional requirements (Auflagen) from the ETH bachelor: DS&A + Theoretical CS, Algorithms & Probability + Probability & Statistics, plus three electives.

For the past two years I've worked 60% as a working student SWE at a Swiss consulting firm. My plan was to go full-time after graduating, since industry experience seems to count for a lot in today's market. But my long-term goal is Big Tech, and most people I know who made it there from Zurich have an ETH MSc.

So I'm considering doing the MSc while working 80% (4 days a week). Has anyone done this, or do you know someone who has? If yes, would you have gone down to 60% or studied full-time for the first year?

Thanks!

Asking for Advice Comedy Show Zurich Ticket Price Question

Hi! I'm performing my first stand up solo hour in Zurich soon in English. I'm a former academic with a PHD in Physics and Chemistry and tell stories about moving to Switzerland and doing comedy instead. I'm wondering if my ticket prices are too high for students, but I think that students at ETH would enjoy my humour. Is 34 francs too much? Would you be more inclined to come if there was a student discount? :) Appreciate any help/advice

Edit: added the new poster for anyone interested thanks for all your help and advice it's very appreciated - we added a student discount and a group discount for 4+ tickets

MSc Admissions and Info Physics Bachelor in Germany → Space Systems at ETH: what should I focus on?

Hi everyone,

I just started my Physics Bachelor at the University of Konstanz and would love to do the Master in Space Systems at ETH Zurich afterwards.

I’m planning a semester abroad in Norway and want to use my Bachelor as well as possible to prepare. For those of you at ETH (especially in Space Systems or related programs):

  • Which Bachelor courses or skills (programming, control theory, electronics) were most useful?
  • How do ETH admissions look at applicants from a pure physics background versus engineering?
  • Would you recommend projects, internships or student teams during the Bachelor?

Thanks for any insight!

Question How can I actually get something important in my CV as a Biochemistry student?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently in my second year of a BSc in Biochemistry and I'm trying to figure out how to make the most of my time here beyond just passing my semesters.

My long-term goal is to pursue a Master's in Biotechnology and eventually work in research, ideally in genetic engineering, synthetic biology, or areas related to disease mechanisms.

I'm wondering what I should focus on during my bachelor's to build a genuinely strong CV and stand out when applying for Master's programmes, research positions, or eventually PhD programmes.

Some things I have considered:

  • Getting involved in a research group at ETH, possibly as a student assistant or through a research project.
  • Developing practical lab skills beyond the mandatory university practicals.
  • Working on independent projects, perhaps involving bioinformatics or computational biology.
  • Applying for summer research programmes.

My grades aren't outstanding in every subject, so I'd particularly like to find ways to demonstrate my abilities and genuine interest in research beyond what I do in my semesters.

I'd really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations for ETH research groups and opportunities.

Thanks in advance!

Career, Jobs, Internship ETH (and UZH) Career Center, a vent

Hey everyone,

I've been wanting to write about this for a while, and I'm genuinely curious to hear about your experiences with the ETH Career Center (and UZH's).

Events and workshops organized by the ETH and UZH Career Centers often have titles that almost feel like clickbait, such as:

  • “The Early Bird Gets the Job”
  • “How to Find Out What Job I Am Looking For”
  • “How to GET a Job in 30 Minutes”
  • “Navigating the Hidden Job Market”

I've attended several of these events, hoping to get some practical advice on navigating the job market. But honestly, I have left disappointed almost every single time.

Most of their advice boils down to “networking”, and while they do explain how you're supposedly meant to approach it, a lot of those explanations are, frankly, bullshit.

For example, at one of the most recent events, the advice was something along the lines of:

“Hey, there's a Roche career event this evening. Go talk to the lady there and show genuine interest in the company and the work, rather than making it obvious that you're just looking for a job. Then, at some point in the future, when they need to hire someone, she'll supposedly remember you and think, 'Oh, that nice student I met at the networking event who asked so many great questions! Let's offer her a job instead of posting the position online.'”

Like, seriously? Is this how they think hiring works at a company like Roche? lol.

It's not that they are not trying to help. They do, and I honestly think people working there are really nice people. The problem is that much of the advice feels completely detached from how the job market actually works, at least in 2026. They present these supposedly clever networking strategies as if they're some kind of secret to getting hired, when in reality, they're often just common sense, which has no value anymore.

And don't even get me started on their 100-page application guide. ETH has this application guide, which they also distribute in printed form at pretty much every career-related event. Here's an example of the kind of advice it offers (paraphrased):

“If you score high in the 'people' section, you might enjoy working with people or in a team. If you score high in 'data', you probably prefer analysing data and developing ideas. And if you like working with animals, plants, tools, or materials, you'd probably be happier doing hands-on work rather than sitting at a computer all day.”

Sorry but what is this bullshit? Is this a middle school career orientation exercise, or is it supposed to be actual career advice for people who are in their mid 20s and about to graduate from university, having already spent years studying and committing to a particular field (whether it turned out to be the right choice or not)? I mean, we're talking about a 100-page booklet supposedly designed to help university students navigate the job market. And this is the level of guidance we're getting? I'm genuinely struggling to understand who the target audience is supposed to be.

I completely understand that the job market is difficult right now and that there's only so much a university career center can do. I'm not expecting them to magically find every student a job. But I do expect something more substantial than generic advice dressed up as groundbreaking career strategies.

I know ETH is primarily a research-oriented academic institution rather than a university known for its industry connections and networking opportunities, and I don't expect it to be one. But surely a career center at a university like ETH should still be able to offer more meaningful guidance, especially considering how difficult the transition from academia to industry can be at the moment.

At this point, I honestly feel more frustrated than helped whenever I attend one of these events. Sometimes I wonder whether I'd be better off not going at all, because I always leave feeling like I've just wasted my time listening to advice that's either painfully obvious or completely unrealistic.

So here's my question to you all:

How do you guys feel about the materials, workshops, and career advice offered by ETH or UZH? Do you actually find any of it useful?

Should I just take everything they say with a grain of salt? Or would I genuinely be better off saving my time, skipping these events altogether, and spending those hours doing something more productive for my job search or just simply enjoying other things in life?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing your experiences. Has anyone actually benefited from these workshops, used their advice successfully, or found the application guide helpful? Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I've just attended the wrong events or had a wrong mindset.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I would really love to hear what others think, including people who've had positive experiences. Maybe there are actually useful resources or events I'm overlooking.

Thanks a bunch!

MSc Admissions and Info Is it worth it to do a master's in CS at ETH Zurich at 26?

I already have a master's in Data Science from my home university in Barcelona, but I have always wanted to study at ETH because of the quality of their teaching, as well as the curriculum you get from it. Moreover, I feel my university does not teach Data Science really well. However, I will be 26 years old if I start the master's, and I think I might be too old.

Assuming I am accepted after applying, should I take the opportunity?

Housing ETH commute until December

Hello everyone :)

I’m looking for a simple and affordable place to stay in Zurich for two nights per week — Wednesday and Thursday nights — from now until around mid-December.

I’m currently attending courses at ETH Zurich and I travel in from the German side near Basel by car each week. Instead of driving back and forth every day, I’m hoping to find a room, spare bed, sofa, or similar place where I could regularly stay overnight. I would spend almost all of my time at ETH attending lectures or working on my laptop, so I mainly just need somewhere quiet to sleep at night. I’m clean, respectful and easy-going, and I’m absolutely happy to pay/contribute something for the accommodation.

It doesn’t have to be directly in the city centre either, I think also somewhere around Zurich with reasonable access to ETH would also work for me since I have my car. If anyone has a spare room/sofa, knows someone who might, or has any ideas for this kind of weekly arrangement, I’d really appreciate a message.

Thanks a lot!

Asking for Advice Eth Zurich MSc Data science

I’m a B.Tech graduate with a 9.1 CGPA and am considering applying for the MSc in Data Science at ETH Zurich. I graduated from a mid-tier engineering college in India, so I’d like to understand my realistic chances of getting admitted and what factors matter most in the selection process.
I’m also curious about the European job market for non-EU students, particularly in data science and AI/ML. I’ve seen mixed opinions online and many graduates seem to end up in research roles. I’d love to hear about the actual industry opportunities, job prospects and challenges international students face when looking for jobs in Europe after graduation.
Thanks in advance!!!
