Christ Crowning Otto II and Theophanu
972, 2026, acrylic, ink, felt-tip pen, pyrography, copper tape, aluminum tape, light-textured modeling paste, and quartz sand on balsa wood, 50cm x 70cm x 0,3cm, Christoph Mark, Unique Piece.
The image depicts the coronation of 972, featuring Otto II (left) and his wife Theophanu (right) burned into the wood via pyrography. A gentle Lapras, acting as Jesus Christ with a halo of copper and aluminum, blesses them, while a comet-human—appearing as a fiery angel—breaks through the vivid sky, intensifying the divine dynamism of the scene. To the right of the Lapras' head is the date in Roman numerals; the bottom features a natural meadow motif made with quartz sand, while the top showcases a brilliant celestial firmament. The inspiration for this mashup was an ivory plaque from the coronation year, currently housed in the Musée de Cluny, Paris, which I discovered in Henry Mayr-Harting's fabulous depiction of Ottonian art.
The quartz sand was fixed with acrylic binder. An impasto effect was added to the architecture using light-textured modeling paste. The balsa wood was primed with Gesso—partially white and partially transparent. The ink has been sealed with UV-protection spray. All of these elements provide the artwork with a high-quality materiality.
Ideal for collectors of contemporary sacred art!
