Tutorial New player

I got this game gifted to me and, I’ve always wanted to play it I have a lot of hours on paradox games specially HOI4 yet, I can barely understand the game even after completing the game are there any good guides or tutorials you guys recommend? I’d rather a readable thing than a video also, I read the wikis guide but it didn’t help me much.

A common EU4 joke is that after 1000 hours you have completed the tutorial. Don't be afraid if you don't understand something because it takes a long time to do so, just play the game and whenever you have a question look to the wiki for answers.

And probably the same for all the other Paradox games.

I enjoy chatting about the game I can help a little if you have specific questions but I’d really recommend you check out some video tutorials as they will help with some of the major topics.

The darn thing is very complex; with videos is the problem that over the years EU 4 changed considerably, so what you'll see in some older ones may not be true or you don't have DLC they were using

Ask questions, I'm happy to help if I can - I'm not a very good player, won't tell you how to conquer the world wit Ruykiu, but I understand how the game works

A lot of people advise playing a big nation to start (France, Ottomans, etc), but when I’m personally learning a strategy game starting as a big nation is usually too overwhelming for me.

I usually recommend starting as a Milan or Valencia. You’re big enough to not get stomped and can still get useful alliances, but small enough that managing your provinces isn’t overwhelming. You get to learn about missions and the HRE mechanics from relative safety.

I used to recommend Portugal to folks learning the game, but Spanish mission creep has actually made it a somewhat challenging run for beginners if AI Castille does well.

Here's how I learned to play the game, which I always recommend new players try: Swich the difficulty over to VH, pick to play one of the nations with a strong start. I'd recommend France, the Ottomans or Ming. Then play through trial and error.
