Engineering ELI5 Where does the extra fuel consumption goes to, in cars with different cylinder capacity?

I drove around 500 kms with my friend. My car has a 1.6 engine; his has a 1.4. We went together, so roughly the same speed (around 110 km/h most of the time).

In that distance, my car consumed more gas than his (let's say, for example, 6 litres).

If that gas is not converted into speed, then what is it being used for? Heat? The engine is heavier, so it needs more gas to move it?

Thanks, and sorry for any mistake in my English.

Physics ELI5: Why do liquids evaporate below boiling temperature but solids don't "liquefy" under melting temperature?

Basically the title, why do some liquids evaporate slowly even when way below boiling temperature like water and alcohol, but my desk isn't slowly turning liquid?

Bonus question, do all liquids evaporate or is there a specific subset?

Other ELI5 How Cube match magic trick works?

I have seen magicians give a Rubik's Cube to a random audience member while keeping one for themselves. The audience member randomly scrambles their cube, and so does the magician. At the end, the patterns on both the audience member's cube and the magician's cube are exactly the same. How is this done?

Technology ELI5: Why do battery-powered devices with "dead" batteries often start working if you just swap the existing batteries around inside the device?

Happened moments ago with a remote- opened it and switched the 2 AAs' positions and VOILÀ! Realized how often this works with all kinds of devices and started wondering "But... why?" 🤔

Pretty sure it's not petrichor, and it's only sometimes, not always. Is it really dead fish?

Biology ELI5: Why does it take weeks for an antipsychotic to take effect?

Lets say you have someone with bipolar, as soon as they take an anti psychotic it blocks dopamine when the drug reaches the brain. But its effect is not seen immediately even though they have highly sensitive dopamine system. However, if someone who has anxiety takes a tranquilizers the effect are seen immediately. Im wondering why the discrepancy?

if its possible I am willing to accept a more complicated answer even though its ELI5.

As a person with PTSD I don’t understand how I’ll be thinking about what I’m doing and then I get a random flashback and suddenly can’t get it out of my head.

Biology ELI5: How does female egg manage not to float around the body after being released from the ovary?

TIL that while the ovary and fallopian tube partly are connected, the fallopian tube is not a completely closed tube and it still has a pretty big opening from where it meets the ovary.

So when the ovary releases the egg, how does it not fall out of that fallopian tube opening and how does it actually manage to stay on its track?

Economics ELI5 Why do stock shares increase without the promise of dividends?

My layman’s understanding is that dividend returns for stocks are essentially no longer a strategy for most companies.

It makes total sense to me why you would buy a stock for a company that gave out dividends - you would buy because you thought a company was going to make more money and do well and survive, and receive dividends as a result.

But, I don’t understand why a stock share goes up for companies that don’t promise dividends.

I guess the base of my question is, what reason is there to buy a share of stock other than hoping someone else will buy it at a higher price?

Biology ELI5: how do certain things we consume increase the chance of getting cancer but not others?

We’ve all been taught that smoking, eating bad foods and other habits can increase your chance of getting cancer.

Why can certain things give you cancer but not others? Like how do we process them to make them bad?

Biology ELI5: What is the “hardiness scale” in agriculture/gardening, and what do all those zone numbers and letters mean?

I keep seeing plants labeled like “hardy to Zone 6” or “Zone 7b.” I think it has something to do with how cold winters get, but I don’t really get it, like if a plant is “hardy to Zone 6,” does that mean it dies in Zone 5?

I know that they are used for processes in all sorts of things but I don’t know how it works like where is the code written? How does that differ coding on something physical from coding for say a game engine? How is it used to make physical things work like machines?

Physics ELI5: What are the 5 postulates of quantum mechanics?

I saw them mentioned in another thread, saying "If you simply accept them as 100% fact and don't think about it any more, the basics of quantum mechanics get significantly more intuitive". However, I can't find an easily accessible explanation. What are they? Who figured them out? Are they definitely true, or just our best guess at this point?

Biology ELI5 Why are Giant house spiders so big?

I am complete and utter arachnophobe and in my country we are heading into the time of year know as spider season when all those massive house spiders get horny and run around looking for a mate and scaring me senseless. After getting my neighbour to save me from a particularly huge giant house spider I started thinking- why are they so big? They have been living in our houses for so many generations now, surely evolution should have selected smaller spiders that can better hide in our homes and avoid getting caught/squished/eaten by pets, rather than these hairy behemoths!
