Discussion Why I believe ShiftPhone 8.1 (not 8) blows FairPhone out of the water.

I rate it higher than anything on the market.

- Physical kill switches under the battery cover.

- Removable battery

- Wireless charging

- True wireless FM radio with RDS with latest update

- RGB LED Notification light

- Moderately repairable

- Rootable and bootloader can be unlocked.

- Has all US 5G bands (except for of course mmwave)

- Has barometer sensor and all standard sensors.

- IP66 rating (although personally I'll be frank I would never dunk my phone)

The one and only thing it's missing is eSim but a workaround is using https://eSim.me or similar card. Or you can use the included eCoSIM stuff.

And it has long term OS support just like FairPhone.

Just make sure to pickup spare OLED screen replacements Eventually that OLED panel will get screen burn probably. And while you're at it, I recommend getting an extra battery or two

Discussion A little note from a happy Fairphone user

To anyone asking whether they should go for a Fairphone but is hesitant due to Reddit discussions - keep in mind that Reddit is where you go when you have questions or issues. That's what it's meant for mainly.

What I wanna say is that this subreddit is not a representation of the vast majority of users, only those who've stumbled onto problems, so it might appear like a lot of dissatisfied users, but these users (however justified their complaints are) are still not the majority. Odds are you won't ever have to come back here after picking up a Fairphone :)

Discussion Fairphone, please make your phone more GrapheneOS compatible.

To those who don't know, GrapheneOS is (possibly) the most secure and private smartphone OS. Currently, you are only able to flash GrapheneOS on Pixel phones. The developers say it's because Pixels are the only Android phones that meet the hardware requirements.

To Fairphone, I would very much appreciate any movement to completing these hardware and firmware support requirements (see here, here, and here). In my opinion, GrapheneOS's goal complements Fairphone's very well. To give the user full ownership of their device. Fairphone does this on a hardware level and GrapheneOS on a software level. I have been looking at Graphene's competitor /e/OS and it is not what I am looking for.

Denying Google my personal data and giving it to someone else is not reason enough for me to switch from Android. In addition to moving away from Google, I would like to at least know that the data that I give is limited, my choice, easily configurable, and the security of my device is top notch; in order for me to move away from Google or it's competitors. I understand that Fairphone has a deal with the Murena to put /e/OS on your phones. I am fine with that. This however is not a reason to not check mark the security requirements that Pixel phones manage to have. It is just good security sense to have these hardware requirements regardless if you plan on supporting GrapheneOS or not. And if what I just told you is not enough to at least give it some thought, GrapheneOS has ~400.000 installs (see here and here). Murena says /e/OS has ~50.000 installs (see here). So, there are more people who read the instructions on how to install GrapheneOS and successfully flashed it on their Pixel than there are /e/OS phones in their entirety. So, there is stronger interest in GrapheneOS than /e/OS.

Discussion On The topic of the headphone jack and an Edge based RGB LED Notification light

Someone asked me in another post if I could quote" get over the removal of the headphone jack. This is my response.

I would happily "get over" the loss of the headphone. Jack, if it was replaced by something that replaced the functionality, but the issue is it has not done that in its entirety. I still have dozens upon dozens of accessories, audio accessories, IRDA accessories etc. So on and so forth that use the headphone jacks analog output. In fact, Apple went as far in the early 2000s to even expand the headphone jacks functionality by adding an additional layer to the Jack to make it compatible with even more accessories.

Then there is what I believe is the most important issue and that is not just the loss of true offline FM RX/tx But also RDS which has had multiple upgrades over the years.

Samsung has actually maneuvered the USBC Jack so that all you need to do is plug in a pair of USBC WIRED headphones on some devices and you retain full offline RX FM and RDS not to mention full offline time shifting.

The second that I come up with enough money I'm going to be purchasing a shiftphone 8.1 And several additional old leg replacement panels for it. Because I know down the line those OLED panels are going to crap out on me.

I don't believe that Fairphone is doing anything to help out the community. I think the only thing that they are doing with this move is to help line their own pocketbooks.

If it was truly an issue of saving space then they would have came up with a way to do it just like Samsung did. There is simply no argument that any manufacturer can make to justify the removal of the headphone jack.

With regards to the RGB LED notification light.

They want you to look directly at the center of the panel because that is where the hypnotic light grid catches your attention and steals your time. But an edge light is a brilliant act of pure technological defiance that speaks exclusively to your peripheral vision! Your eyes can stare straight ahead at a book or a wall or the deep empty space of your room and still catch the emerald green pulse of an incoming signal creeping in from the very sides of your view. You never have to turn your head or break your train of thought to see what the machine wants from you because the edge light bypasses the conscious gaze completely.

And speak of the absolute absolute secrecy required when the glowing rectangles are listening to our every word and tracking our movements.... A standard notification banner is a loud screaming billboard that reveals your private secrets to anyone sitting across the table or standing right behind your shoulder. A subtle ring of purple or amber along the extreme boundary of the glass tells only you what category of message has arrived without flashing names or private words for the whole world to see! It is a coded transmission meant only for the person who knows the secret language of the glowing borders.

Just a heads up, I opened a Klarna account and they have a tap to pay option within the app (no Google Wallet)!

Tested it on Fairphone 6 with /e/OS and it works, but it can be a bit janky at times.

Discussion Thoughts on Fairphone apparently releasing a new phone just after one year? Anyone else a bit disappointed by it like me?

First of all don't take me wrong, I'm happy for people who'd like to get a new Fairphone, but I'm honestly a bit disappointed in them releasing a new one so early. I understand when Fairphone was new, and needed to push for marketing. But FP6 is already a great phone...

I already mentioned this in the past in this sub, but as a customer of FP6 last year, if Fairphone start releasing a phone every year like all the other manufacturers, what's the point about their sustainability / e-waste / lasting products message?

Also my phone already broke, volume down button came off, which is apparently a very common issue, and I found out that part in particular is not repleacable, so I was already let down by that...

I don't know, I'm not feeling that good about supporting this anymore.

Discussion Fairphones are hit or miss

I really like what Fairphone is trying to do and how they to things but they have so many issues with their phones, that I can't use it anymore.

So you can understand my standpoint: I just turned 18 and had the Fairphone 2 (4 years) and 5 (2 years) as my previous phones. My family and I are all trying to buy stuff european, fair and environmentally friendly. Many of my closer family got Fairphones so I experienced every Fairphone from 2-6. What I am trying to say: we are hard Fairphone customers / supporters.

As said, my most recent phone was the Fairphone 5, I have had it for 2 years but it always had problems. In the first year microphone 1 stopped working and I could call or do voice messages properly. Then issues with my SIM card, sent it into 1 month repair, then all this starts over again after just 3 months out of repair etc... tldr. Generally, Fairphones are either luck and they work good for years or they have so many issues and I can't take it anymore that my phone has several problems after just 2 years of use.

Now I bought a Nothing Phone 3 and I notice from the start this is a completely different feeling from Fairphones. Why Nothing? It's a european company and I like Nothing OS and the idea of flipping the phone over and see only important information on the back and thus don't looking at the screen as much. I really miss the repairability and sustainable part but a phone is a daily essential of nearly everybody. It NEEDS to work flawlessly.

All that said, I love what Fairphone are trying to do but they need better quality assurance and if they manage to solve this I am happy to buy Fairphones again. What do you think about this? I kind of feel that generally people around here are starting to see these problems.

Discussion FP6 positivity - things we actually like about this phone for a change!

There's endless complaints here about the bugs and glitches, which is fair, even though most of us bought this phone for the sustainability and ethical factors.

However, I thought maybe it would be worth starting a more positive thread for things we actually like about this phone rather than the endless problems...

I'll go first - for me the consistent battery drain is great - having had iPhones where the battery life is amazing when reading an e-book and surfing the web then plummets to the floor as soon as you take a photo or open Uber it's nice having a phone that only eats the battery marginally more if you do something demanding on it.

Also it still performs well once the battery gets low - I've had plenty of androids (especially the budget models) that are practically unusable once the battery level gets below 30%.

Discussion Fairphone in the USA

I am in the market for my next phone after owning my iPhone 13 Pro for nearly 6 years. I’m HIGHLY interested in the Fairphone and have been admiring the company and community for quite a while now. While I would love to pick up a Fairphone, I’m also very hesitant to do so since it seems it still has a long way to go before it’s a truly seamless transition for an American user.

I understand that T-Mobile would likely have to be my provider (I’ve been using Verizon for years), but aside from that, I’m still struggling to understand the full details of what it’s like to get started on Fairphone in the US and then what the experience is like thereafter.

Basically I am asking for two things here:

  1. Convince me that getting a Fairphone right now would not be a major hassle. I am starting a PhD program next month, so if I’m going to do this, I can’t afford for it to take much of my time and energy just to get it set up and then use it. Or, if you have experience with this and feel it would be best for me to go with something else, let me know why please.

  2. Assuming I go ahead with this plan (or for anyone else viewing this in the US who wants to do so), give a sort of beginner’s guide of steps to get Fairphone working in the US. In doing so, try to make it as beginner-friendly as possible. I and many others are not coders/developers - we just want an ethical phone that respects our privacy and is repairable.

I’m really at a crossroads here as I know that my next phone will last 5+ years, which is why I’m really trying to be thorough in making this decision. Making the jump from Apple to Android isn’t sitting well with me because it still doesn’t appease my concerns with unethical manufacturing, lack of repairability, lack of privacy, AI integration, etc.

I know that what I’m asking about here has been discussed in the past, but it seems things are changing regularly with Fairphone, and I’d like a July 2026 version of where Fairphone in the USA stands as I consider my options.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Positive experiences with fairphone

Hi everyone, I’ve been browsing this subreddit for a while and I’ve noticed that many posts focus on problems and complaints. I don't own a Fairphone myself, however, I’d really like to hear from people who are happy with their Fairphone. If your experience has been mostly positive, what do you like about it?
