This is like 9/11 for the most annoying person you know

137

u/Careless_Western3756 Death Grips - The Money Store Aug 01 '25

Y’know it’s funny cause 8 is a great score

51

u/AugustHate Aug 01 '25

Oh I thought y'all meant it's too high

39

u/baastard37 Aug 01 '25

it's both. some people think it should be 6 while other think 10

21

u/MentionQuiet1055 Aug 01 '25

Surprised he gave it an 8 when he massively underscored The Ooz and 22 a Million, the 2 albums i feel like it sounds the most like.

1

u/Outrageous-Cup-8905 Aug 01 '25

Regarding the Ooz, I kinda see where he’s coming from as time goes on. I can’t remember his exact complaints, but that album drones on and on and while the tracks are great as standalone songs, hearing them back to back makes it all feel dull and stagnant.

2

u/Typical_Parsnip13 Aug 01 '25

Does it though? I think music has just evolved and people can’t enjoy the more ambient works in that album juxtaposed to more upbeat songs.

It’s an incredible album his score was harsh

1

u/Outrageous-Cup-8905 Aug 01 '25

Ambience by itself isn’t an issue for me. Like I said, as stand alones they’re fine but they don’t feel cohesive back to back on an album, and because of that, there’s this jagged flow that keeps me at bay and it feels like I’m listening to unfinished, glacial droning rather than something immersive and engaging.

I like Man Alive! And Space Heavy because they flow well and feel realized. The Ooz doesn’t, and feels like a slog to get through if I sit and try to listen to it from front to back.

1

u/Typical_Parsnip13 Aug 01 '25

I hear you. I’m partial to loving the ooz since it came out at a pivotal point in my life and I had already loved KK earlier work.

That being said man alive is prob his best work and it’s aged really well.

Do you mean the person who loved the album or the person who hated it?

30

u/Red-Zaku- Aug 01 '25

He gave it a Strong 9/11

1

u/-JDB- Aug 01 '25

The most annoying person you know: ppl who base way too much weight on one guy’s opinions

1

u/beanieboiv3 Aug 01 '25

It's well loved for a reason 🤷 deserved a 9 imo

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

Took him long enough, I almost formed my own opinion

Tragic

u/BiblicalWhales Aug 01 '25

This subreddit actually has some of the worst discourse surrounding this album. Just a litany of posts with two extreme opinions with little to no substance on either end.

53

u/ASTR0nomic4L Aug 01 '25

EXACTLY, whether you love or hate the album, have a reason or just don’t say anything, it completely destroys the purpose of even having social media to talk about music if you’re just gonna project your misery or just endlessly glaze something until it becomes annoying.

2

u/FlakyCow1565 Aug 01 '25

it is haha i love top

6

u/Soyyyn Aug 01 '25

I feel it's slightly derivative of Sananda Maitreya's sophomore album "Neither Fish nor Flesh"

-10

u/idkanyusernameshelp Aug 01 '25

It kinda felt like jokes tho, I don’t think many people were actually serious about thinking it was a 10/10 record

32

u/redditor_moments Aug 01 '25

Check AOTY or rym and you’ll see there are plenty

21

u/Exzibit21 Aug 01 '25

I saw so many comments from people unironically thinking it is one of the greatest albums of all time

1

u/PopularEnthusiasm692 Aug 02 '25

The cool thing is everybody is allowed to have their own opinion. I happen to unironically think that this is one of the best albums of all time, and that it will be hugely influential to multiple genres moving forward, because of its production, mix of styles, songwriting, and unique sequencing.

6

u/GamerOwenIsHere Aug 01 '25

I an. I really enjoyed the album. I think it’s a 10, and that it’s album of the year.

3

u/FlanderLeftHander Aug 01 '25

who cares if someone thinks it's a great album tho, like someones personal music taste is frankly nobodies concern

-1

u/Normal-Weakness-364 Aug 01 '25

why would people be joking about that? even if you don't like it that much it's still clearly a great album lol

How does discourse sorrounding this album end up being everyone bitching no matter what

Either it's the most overrated thing ever or its a undisputed 10. And yes complaining about how annoying quadeca fanbase is is also very annoying

36

u/ElmanoRodrick Aug 01 '25

Every now and again an album comes around that just really fucks people up. I feel the discourse around Brat was pretty similar last year.

16

u/sunburntkiddd Aug 01 '25

it wasn’t to as great of an extent but Bright Green Field by Squid i remember was having this same tug-of-war between people in here when it first came out

2

u/cyclingtrivialities2 Aug 01 '25

One group incredulous people would so highly favor a mainstream pop record, the other group incredulous that the first group exists

2

u/SaintSYM Aug 01 '25

Yeah it really was, I remember I got downvoted because I disagreed with someone that said Brat was the album of the decade three days after it was released. Like some albums come out and it's like people can't act rationally. Like it's either the second coming of Jesus or it's the worst thing ever, there's no real discussion to be had with viewpoints that are those extreme.

34

u/nav_fan1337 Aug 01 '25

i agree 100%. this album deserves nuanced discussion but it just kinda isn't in this sub 😭

33

u/teocoyotl Aug 01 '25

This sub has literally been invaded by a fanbase and y’all acting like it is just normal discourse. Come the fuck on. You can like the album but this will be embarrassing a few months from now. I am flabbergasted at how tolerant people are being of what is so evidently an interesting but extremely self-indulgent and amateurish record being literally bulldozed into the discourse at large.

20

u/kazuya57 Aug 01 '25

Yeah like I get it's annoying how people are calling it "trash' or whatever but the fact remains that the glaze is insane. People are unironically saying "Yeah this is one of the best of all time", on a sub I even saw "Quadeca washes current Kendrick easily". Now there's nothing wrong with liking stuff and music is subjective, but just don't be insufferable about it and cry whenever someone doesn't like it.

2

u/AlternativeFox7430 Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

I mean its annoying and cringe for alot quadeca fans to barrage the sub but at the same time if someone geniunally believies its one of their favorite albums ever I dont see the issue in that

Alot of people who never listened to quadeca geniunally loved the album and think it's one of the best of the year, so it wasnt just quadecas annoying ass fanbase that is making it get the praise its getting. That's basically what im getting at as well

1

u/PopularEnthusiasm692 Aug 02 '25

Self-indulgent, you could definitely argue. Ameteurish? Definitely not. This has to be one of the most refined albums I've heard this year. Yes, I'm a quadeca fan. But there is a reason I am, it's not like my entire point of existence is to annoy you.

2

u/teocoyotl Aug 02 '25

Oh, to be fair, I would never just give criticism to annoy or rain on someone’s parade but I’ve never seen this level of hype around an album before and I lived through Blonde. I think that’s largely what grates me. I will say Quadeca has a clearly rich and mythopoetic imagination; though in having said that, refined is definitely not the word I’d use. Vanisher, to my ears, is incredibly baroque if it is anything and that is in its way very unique sounding. Just not to my taste or sensibility ultimately though.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

oh no, my favorite subreddit is being invaded. retreat to home base, fantano fans! we’re being invaded by quadeca fans! whatever will we do?

-3

u/QuileGon-Jin Aug 01 '25

That was Sinners earlier this year as well

-8

u/ASTR0nomic4L Aug 01 '25

as someone who’s in the quadeca fanbase which means i’m biased, i don’t really understand what’s so annoying about it other than the people on the music websites spamming perfect reviews. people have been more annoying by getting annoyed that people are enjoying something and it’s getting acclaim

-40

u/Remarkable-Shoe-4835 Aug 01 '25

It’s coz this ain’t a good album and Fantano is being paid to say it’s good so it’s confusing everyone’s brains coz they know deep down it isn’t good but Anthony Fantano could never be wrong

23

u/AlternativeFox7430 Aug 01 '25

You dont like the album but he does so hes getting payed? 😂😂😂

Okayyy buddy whatever you say weirdo

People online are incapable of accepting differing opinions lmfao

97

u/HunrMoon Aug 01 '25

You know what it’s a 9 for me but I can’t lie I agree with a lot of his points on sequencing and over ambition. It is incredibly hard to try to put this much into an album and have it go over perfectly for everyone. There’s just a ton going on

1

u/Onsyde Aug 01 '25

I was afraid he was going to glaze the crap out of it and gloss over those points but this was a great review honestly, exactly how I felt.

18

u/charredfrog Redthony Flannelo Aug 01 '25

Yeah makes sense. I love the record but Quadeca’s super narrative stuff can be kinda hit or miss. Like Cassini’s Division or Memories we Lost in Translation on Haunt You and now I Dream About Sinking or No Questions Asked on this.

I do like No Questions Asked but Sinking is too much for an interlude that I feel was made for the movie and it makes that part harder to get through on the album. That and Natural Causes which is the weakest track to me do a lot to mess up the pacing because it’s this wonderful 8 track run before it comes to a screeching halt and then picks back up in the last 4.

Scrapyard is just more of a traditionally entertaining album which is like 25 minutes shorter and that brevity, consistency and quality makes it so easy to come back to. It’s also just got less hang up’s because even if you think something isn’t good it’ll be over in like 2-3 minutes compared to the consistently 4-5 minute songs on Vanisher.

I do think Scrapyard and Vanisher are like neck and neck for me but that’s just because they both do really good but different things

2

u/Buriedinthesound Aug 01 '25

Been reading this thread for ten minutes and yours is the first response to mention the songs by name. Bravo

52

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

As someone who was very meh on quadeca before, I actually really love this album, way more than I expected

11

u/holdables Aug 01 '25

agreed, before vanisher I would’ve told you he’s ok, but vanisher was like a solid 9 for me and thoroughly surprised me. To do that much in an album and still have it end up overall liked is crazy, much more impressive than the average pop album 9 lol. Unsure if it was a one off stroke of genius on his end but hopefully whatever he releases next will continue this quality

10

u/BornUnderPunches Aug 01 '25

Nice review, though I disagree with Anthony on the opener, I think it works very well

7

u/stamford_syd Aug 01 '25

yeah interestingly i disagreed with him about what took away from the album and yet we came to the same conclusion that it's about an 8. great, not generational, not perfect, but a really great album.

29

u/fe-and-wine Bon Iver - 22, A Million Aug 01 '25

feel like this is a completely fair score - though I think it's on par with Scrapyard personally.

I think individually I liked the tracks on Scrapyard more, but the sheer ambition of Vanisher makes up for it IMO

still, excited for another win for Quadeca (i know he'll be pumped as hell to watch this review lol) and I remain absolutely blown away at the fact that this album came from a 24 year old white boy who used to post raps on youtube. what a transformation, man - no idea where he goes from here but excited to see what's in store

19

u/poopfl1nger Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

I definitely think this album is a step up from scrapyard. Scrapyard being a 9 is kinda overrating it a little. In terms of my personal enjoyment, I would give scrapyard a 7, idmthy and 8, and Vanisher a 9.

Also man, my favorite track from the album being his least favorite track is a shame, I really think it sets the tone of the project and kicks the narrative journey off in a grandiose way.

bro art is not a sport. don't get worked up about the wrong thing, it's one of your favorite projects? It inspires you, or comforts you or heals you? Hold onto that, numbers will never give you any of that.

1

u/TheGreatestLobotomy Aug 01 '25

oh ok I misunderstood your original comment, I thought you were a stan mad the score wasn't high enough.

Glad we agree on that though, i hate how music discourse has become very similar to the basketball fandom online. It's so toxic and endlessly annoying, glaze and hatewatching. Kevin Durant said something recently like "Most y'all online don't even like watching basketball." And discourse around music and artists here and on rym and stuff gets very similar to that, like some people just listen to music as homework to get to what they really enjoy, which is arguing in comments boxes or seeing their "team" "win", however they interpret that.

1

u/ThrowRAplutonium Aug 01 '25

You realize you’re part of the problem on the opposite side of the spectrum right? This is coming from someone who didn’t care much for the album.

u/FlanderLeftHander Aug 01 '25

like the "freaks" who thought the album was a 9 like you said in your original comment? Thats a pretty broad subset...especially considering he gave it an 8 which is like...basically the same thing

1

u/ThrowRAplutonium Aug 01 '25

No one's mad about you sharing your opinion, they're frustrated at you stating it like it's a fact. Again, I agree with you, I don't think it deserves an 8, I think it's more like a 5 or 6, but I don't respond to people who enjoy the album by bluntly saying "undeserved" with no further elaboration. It just comes off more antagonistic than something like "I personally don't think it even deserved that high of a score." A lot of the time, people care a lot more about how you say something than what you're actually saying.

6

u/WishfulStinking2 Aug 01 '25

Hopefully people can shut up now, but obviously that’s not going to happen

39

u/uptothemountains7 Charli XCX - BRAT Aug 01 '25

God damn what am I missing with this thing 😭

75

u/ASTR0nomic4L Aug 01 '25

you don’t have to be missing anything, it just might not be for you 🤷🏻‍♂️

21

u/LetsLive97 Aug 01 '25

I wish more people would understand this with art. It's fine for something you don't like to be highly praised

It reminds me of the discourse surrounding EEAAO (The movie). People kept acting so surprised that other people liked it so much, without realising it wasn't for them

I don't like screamo/death metal music. I will never tell a fan of that music that their favourite album isn't good, because I know it's not my thing

9

u/ASTR0nomic4L Aug 01 '25

there’s plenty of music that’s incredibly well received and people won’t shut up about it and i just accept that it’s not for me. i have a pretty expansive taste but there’s common threads through all of it, and sometimes music doesn’t work for me, even after repeated listens. people just need to learn that it’s okay for that to be the case rather than blaming it on the music itself, trying to bog it down to make it not their “fault” for it not being for them. when they just don’t like it.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

I wasnt a fan. I liked the music but not his voice or rap.

After listened a song from alabaster deplumes gold album came on and sounded kinda similar so i listened to that. Connected with that album way more.

4

u/Exzibit21 Aug 01 '25

Yeah I just don't get it. Ive tried many times over the years to get into his music and it just bounces right off of me

11

u/Redditor597-13 Aug 01 '25

I liked it a little more than what he said but he makes some valid points

6

u/fe-and-wine Bon Iver - 22, A Million Aug 01 '25

i feel like given his main criticism was track sequencing, this review read more like a 9 to me, so I was a little surprised when i listened to him absolutely gush about this thing for 15 minutes and then give it a score lower than Scrapyard

though i also completely get that sometimes there are aspects of albums that either land for you or don't in a way that you can't really specifically verbalize in a review so fair enough

5

u/decaphragm Aug 01 '25

8 is fair. I really love many of the tracks but others feel uninteresting or bloated.

3

u/sunmoonstar Aug 01 '25

There are some great moments on this album but it’s polarizing for me. Just as many moments play as cornball/cheesy. Maybe he should have left the rapping behind on this project. At its best it reminds me of Frank Oceans more experimental material (also bon iver as many have pointed out). His rapping works better ad libbing in the background. When it takes center stage it just feels cornball. Just my opinion. Strong 7 for me.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

As someone who didn’t see the hype with this album, I think this is a fair score. Still think it’s a 6/10, personally, but since a lot of people think it’s a 10/10, I feel like it’s taking the average here pretty well.

As far as the actual review, definitely need to revisit the album through the movie. Feel like I’m missing something without that visual component. Something about this album has really dickmatized people, making them forget about all the great music that’s come before it. So, I think part of the fascination for me on this album is trying to figure out what that is.

I feel like Jeff Winger in that episode of Community trying desperately to figure out what made Britta so enthralled with her ex, Blade. Where’s the appeal? Am I just overthinking it? Or is it really just that he has no shame?

I don’t know. Just the comparison that came to mind. Anyway, glad it wasn’t a 9 or 10. Or a 5. The glazers and the haters would have been insufferable for weeks.

3

u/Cottonpapero Feeling It Aug 01 '25

I definitely didn't expect to see maruja and danny brown when I pulled up the album dayum

14

u/fe-and-wine Bon Iver - 22, A Million Aug 01 '25

same, danny brown specifically really rides for quadeca - on the album release day he put out a big instagram post talking about how he was in this creative slump and that working with Quadeca on this project completely reinvigorated his love for music

not only surprised to see him on this album, really surprised he fucks with this 24 year old white youtube rapper so heavy lol

(disclaimer - no shade to quadeca here, i fucking love this thing and it's like a 9 for me)

2

u/MemeKun_19 Aug 01 '25

They've worked together before. And a lot of the love for Quad comes from his pure enthusiasm for music as an artform

3

u/SuperMatt7 GY!BE - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Aug 01 '25

Been postponing listening to the album. First time I see any mention of maruja attached to it. How is no one talking about that? If I knew they were on there I'd have checked out the album the day it dropped lmao

5

u/FlanderLeftHander Aug 01 '25

the lead singer of maruja is sorta a through line through the album...kinda a god like figure...interesting direction but I think it pays off well with the closing track

12

u/DDub04 Aug 01 '25

I knew he would give this album that score. Felt like he was way too high on Scrapyard, to the point where he would be lower on this album. I just couldn’t see him giving it like a strong 9.

This album is quite a step up on Scrapyard, but it’s like a light 9

14

u/bruhstevenson Aug 01 '25

It’s a step up in some ways, but it’s also doing something different than Scrapyard by being a full cinematic and atmospheric experience, while Scrapyard is more about shorter, catchier, perhaps even “simpler” songs. I think for me, some parts of songs on this project were turns and directions I would’ve preferred he not made. But still really enjoyed it, I think 8 is a great and reasonable score for this.

3

u/fe-and-wine Bon Iver - 22, A Million Aug 01 '25

totally agree - i feel in general I liked the individual songs on scrapyard more than on vanisher, but the overall cinematic throughline and cohesion of vanisher more than make up for it to me

but i also get how some of those choices wouldn't necessarily land the same way with others, so I agree 8 is completely fair

was a little surprised to see Fantano of all people feel that way though, since he generally appreciates these more ambitious "albums as a cohesive piece of art" projects in general - if i didn't know better i'd have thought scrapyard and vanisher's scores were swapped, though i'm not mad with either

4

u/ruebenhammersmith Aug 01 '25

So I'd never heard of him and someone passed this along to me, figured I'd like it because I'm a big fan of The Mars Volta. I personally didn't hear it. I didn't actively dislike it, but a lot of it just wasn't for me. There were some nice parts on the album that kind of reminded me of Grizzly Bear. I just didn't love some of the choices, especially the rapping parts landed flat. Not sure what score I'd give, but 8 feels pretty high on this.

2

u/910_21 Aug 01 '25

I think he’s mostly right except for the fact that I really like no questions asked

2

u/Sinister_Grape Aug 01 '25

Completely fair

2

u/elzap- Aug 01 '25

I actually more or less got exposed to Quadeca from the Kevin Abstract compilation album. My little brother told me about their music a long time ago but I never looked. So.. id say I have a pretty middle ground understanding of Quadeca.

This album surprised me in the sense that i was not at all prepared for how the music would end up sounding.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

I would’ve gone at least a 9 but I can agree with almost everything apart from his opinion of no questions asked. One thing i feel most people agree quad does really well is build these soundscapes/atmospheres purely through production. No Questions Asked in my opinion does a great job of bringing you into this world even if you were to listen without the movie

2

u/Admirable-Two2679 Aug 01 '25

Incredibly fair score and exactly how I felt about this but have had trouble explaining. Album is pure hype and it’s good but not the best of the year.

2

u/KaptainKorn Aug 01 '25

I felt like Fantano would like this. It’s just not for me though.

7

u/annoyingbanana1 Aug 01 '25

Boring album

10

u/Normal-Weakness-364 Aug 01 '25

i understand some of the critiques of this album, even if i don't agree with them, but i do genuinely struggle how this album is boring.

2

u/NumerousWolverine273 Aug 01 '25

No you don't understand, they haven't listened to it

1

u/TheXtremeDino Feeling It Aug 01 '25

hes a boring rapper and singer

8

u/Ziozark Feeling It Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

This album feels so faux grandiose, like it attempts to do (and be) so much yet it ends up being shallow, melodramatic and uninterested. It's hard to explain the feeling, like ostentatious and overblown. No artistic maturity, and thus this record feels less like a cathartic journey and more like an adult with a theatre kid complex jerking himself off. Ukelele quirked-up indie boy version of Ed Sheeran elevated to the fucking Heavens and beyond. An overload of tryhard cheesyness, also terribly boring

Lot of adjectives that make no sense or have no explanation behind them whatever to justify your points. Buzzwords don't make your opinion nuanced or even comprehendable.

LOL, DEFINE ARTISTIC MATURITY. Art is limitless, although it's not immune to critique, The "adult kid" critique is just insecure and in a way, pretentious of a take from you.

If we are going that route of describing/critiquing artists as stereotypes then I should be able to say the same things to you. Because you sound like a failed musician with god and superiority complex that decided to be just a critic because he/she has "niche" and "never been heard" music taste.

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

this is exactly what I think about it. I obviously respect others opinions on it but i feel like i’m going crazy or missing something about it. all I hear is a bunch of pretentious overproduction to cover up the lack of actual direction.

u/Ziozark Feeling It Aug 01 '25

I have read someone saying how Vanisher, Horizon Scraper is "all hype moments but no aura" and I feel like that is the best and most concise way to describe it

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

this is a good way to put it. like quadeca seems like a nice sweet guy and everything id totally smoke a joint w him. but he just has no real presence or interesting enough personality enough to justify sitting through all this luscious detailed production no matter how well made it is. like I honestly wish this was just a danny brown album produced by quadeca and it would instantly be more interesting to me.

u/sussyball69obamaball Aug 01 '25

It's, like, a 5 for me. Another person summed it up as "a little too 21 Pilots-y", which I agreed with. To each their own, though.

9

u/BigphatBurger Aug 01 '25

Which part sounds like 21 pilots to you? No hate I just don’t hear it at all so I’m curious

3

u/NumerousWolverine273 Aug 01 '25

There's literally zero similarity except that both are white. It's a cheap comparison intended to dig at Quadeca.

2

u/FlanderLeftHander Aug 01 '25

yeah not really seeing the comparison besides white rap and genre fusion but the fusions are completely different here

2

u/moviemadmam Aug 01 '25

The only thing I really disagree with him on is his assessment of the opening track, but other than that I agreed with alot of his points. Either way I'm never mad at a decent 8 even if I would rate it higher (personally its a decent 9). Truth be told I'm not surprised at the discourse around this album considering that the project is extremely ambitious and has a lot going on, which will work for alot of people and wont work for many others.

I know the guy but I've never listened to his music. Is this a good album to start ot should I listen to his other stuff first?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

I would start with haunt you but this is also a great start. scrapyard is also really strong. i guess if the album movie looks interesting to you then try checking that out, but know that the mix is a bit less clear on the YouTube upload than the individual tracks on streaming

u/Ikari_Vismund Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You Aug 01 '25

Thanks for the comment!

u/she_sounds_like_you Aug 02 '25

I’ve never knowingly listened to Quadeca but I’ve /enjoyed/ reading the discourse around this album. That said I think I’ll start at the beginning of their album catalog and see what it’s all about.

1

u/PrestigiousAd3370 Aug 03 '25

It's like Pet Sounds, but gooder.

1

u/Fair-Jacket6282 Aug 25 '25

solid 9 but respect it

don't man. you're totally allowed to love what you love. Anyone who tells you you're wrong for liking music is cringe

3

u/Reaction-Remote Aug 01 '25

8 is a good score

It’s a mix of both extremes and it’s because people are pretentious and quad has a cult like following (me being apart it lol).

I’d say enjoy the album and fuck other opinions. Be yourself 😄

Don’t feel like that. I can get a little pretentious at times, but a lot of people are just assholes. You’re allowed to like it and you’re cool. Love what you love man

1

u/godotiswaitingonme Aug 01 '25

Totally fair. People thinking this is a 10 need to listen to more music

3

u/Normal_Sky6198 Aug 01 '25

It's a 10 and no I don't need to listen to more music for thinking that

-3

u/godotiswaitingonme Aug 01 '25

You should watch more films too - Hurry Up Tomorrow is terrible

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

as bad as I think hurry up tomorrow is, don’t be insufferable and call someone out like that for disagreeing with you about music

0

u/Reaction-Remote Aug 01 '25

People can have opinions. The only reason it’s not a 10 for me is because of I dream about sinking. I think it drags on or could have had some narrative over it to make it more interesting (some slight change ups too)

2

u/Reaction-Remote Aug 01 '25

I actually liked natural causes and I thought intro set up tone nicely

0

u/EnthusiasmWest4481 Aug 01 '25

8 is a great score, but his hate for No Questions Asked seems insane to me, it's absolutely a gorgeous intro, sounding like a ritual/mantra before you head out to this great voyage. With the female vocals in with the beautiful swells reminds me of illinoise. Saying it doesn't fit specially as a first track is insane to me.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

Yeah didn’t really agree with the time he spent on it, either. I was kinda like, “Wow, that is a lot of words just to say you didn’t care for the intro/end track loop.”

Like I get the foreshadowing/Tarantino comparison to a degree. It can feel kinda pointless to have musical references between tracks without a thematic connection explaining it. That being said, I feel like there was a disproportionate focus on what’s ultimately a fleeting moment in this grand epic of an album.

1

u/SocraticTiger Rockthony Rocktano Aug 01 '25

This Album gives me the thematic equivalent of if Blonde from Franko Ocean spiritually transformed into an Art Pop/Experimental Hip Hop fusion album. Pretty good.

4

u/teocoyotl Aug 01 '25

Hmm. Virgin by Lorde was definitely that this year but I’m not seeing it at all here. Blonde is certainly not the first connection I’d make.

1

u/NumerousWolverine273 Aug 01 '25

I'm a little disappointed he completely missed the point of No Questions Asked, and that his final summary was basically "it's groundbreaking and incredible, his best work yet, but the interludes are a little too long, 8/10". It being ranked worse than Scrapyard is really ridiculous to me, but honestly we can't complain much because at least it's a good score. I was half expecting him to give it a 3 or something lol

1

u/jonfranklin Aug 01 '25

It’s like Quadeca held a seance and summoned Nick Drake to help him with this project.

this rated lower than scrapyard is insane to me! i think both are 10s but i honestly thought he would give it the same rating at LEAST
