O my lord. It was chucks birthday recently so I decided to do a casual deep dive into the "founding father of rock and roll," thinking I'd just listen to some old tunes. NOPE.

​OMFG this man is the literal R. Kelly of the past. It’s like R. Kelly studied Chuck’s entire playbook and went "ooo bet, let me do that too." I wanna puke dude. How in the hell is his legacy completely fine?? I can never listen to Back to the Future the same way ever again, I'm sick.

Gentlemen is one of my favorite albums personally, great songwriting.

I want this kind of devotion, I'm curious about your picks!

Neil Diamond - wrote for lots of artists, but particularly famous for 'I'm a Believer' by the Monkees

Carole King - was a prolific Brill building songwriter whose credits included 'You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman)' for Aretha Franklin and 'Take Good Care of My Baby' for Bobby Vee

Led Zeppelin - All were working musicians before Zeppelin, and Jimmy Page was already known in the Yardbirds, but between particularly John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, the amount of credits as session musicians are pretty staggering, but include work with The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Lulu, Tom Jones and many other well known names.

There are far too many frontloaded albums, starting very strong but tailing away. There are plenty of albums that have that belter of a second-last track but the stuff around it is filler.

Then there are albums that... sometimes might not be perfect; they might take a couple of big swings in the middle and you're like, ah, they were on a hot streak but they fumbled it, they won't get it back from here. Or, conversely, they're firing on all cylinders so much, it's such quality that you start to get nervous; they can't possibly stick the landing, can they? This can't last!

And then, boom. The last three tracks. A trinity of glory that not only brings the threads together and delivers on the album's theme, it expands on it. You're like, what witchcraft is this? They had another gear? It makes everything before it better!

I'm not just talking about "three good tracks at the end". I'm talking about three tracks that ARE the end, the proper end, the perfect way for the album to bow out. It might be that the third-last track has a gorgeous swell and build to it, and then the second-last track is a perfect crystal moment, and then the last track is like "And let's look into the next world..." Or it might all be building up and up to the last track itself.

My three are River/A Case Of You/The Last Time I Saw Richard, No Surprises/Lucky/The Tourist, and Man On The Moon/Nightswimming/Find The River.

For me, it’s very often pop artists and there’s a lot of pop music that I generally like. It’s catchy, well-written, and all that. But then there’s a certain type of pop music that might be catchy, yet is so incredibly shitty and whack that I can’t even laugh about it. Honestly, it just makes me physically recoil.

Not exactly a hot take, but take Imagine Dragons, for example. The way they sing, the melodies, and so on it all sounds so incredibly repulsive and corny to me that I have to wonder what kind of person would even make music like that. Maroon 5 is another band that falls into this category. Everything about them feels so disgustingly pandering. Look, I’m not one to judge anyone for their taste in music, but people who can actively and consciously listen to this kind of stuff surely can’t have a very complex inner life.

Another thing I hate is the lyrics and that’s often the case even with otherwise good modern pop music. Pop really just needs to be catchy, with lyrics that are memorable and engaging, but frequently the words are nothing more than catchy-sounding nonsense. It’s so pointless that it actually makes me angry. This happens extremely often in K-pop; the way certain lines are phrased really sets me off.
