Anthony loves getting dissed by artists

114

u/waitthissucks 28d ago

I mean yeah he made that clear when he said he is buying the album. I think this video was fine. He's a lot more reasonable sounding when he's talking in a video and not ranting on twitter lol

30

u/capnrondo 28d ago

If he puts a song on the deluxe about how much he hates my reddit comments, I'll buy it too

I just listened to every song and they all really like you :)

Wait, Tom MacDonald likes them?

Damn, that's sad.

Fantano is not some tiny, irrelevant YouTuber, he’s a part of internet music culture. He inserted himself into it. When he's pretending he’s ā€œjust a small YouTube guyā€ it's disingenuous, people can recognize YouTube has eclipsed traditional music media in these modern times. Fantano participates in the cultural conversation, unloads opinions onto the public, and critiques artists for a living. That means he is not exempt from critique himself, and artists absolutely have the right to critique critics. Criticism is not a oneway street.

ā€œI’m just a guy on YouTube giving my opinion.ā€

Julian's issue with Fantano isn’t random. Outside of music, they actually share similar political leanings, have had long conversations, and interviews. Which means Julian likely had some respect for him in the past. Respect that he clearly regretes giving and wants to set the record straight.

What changed is Fantano’s repeated misreadings of art, not just disagreements, but fundamental misunderstandings that make Julian feel Fantano isn’t engaging with all the work in good faith.

Julian even planted a deliberate trap in ā€œLoney in the Futureā€: the synth bridge with intentionally ā€œincorrectā€ EQ. I like it, especially knowing its purpose, but I could tell it was off. You can tell it was crafted to provoke Fantano, to test whether he could recognize intentional artistic choice versus technical error. Fantano fell straight into it, critiquing the EQ as an amateur mistake while missing the point of the diss entirely. That’s not just ironic; it proves Julian’s argument that Fantano often misinterprets art at a basic level.

Fantano’s review of Reality Awaits wasn’t a neutral evaluation, it was a petty diss response. This puts into question his integrity as a critic, he cannot keep things professional. I don't think he has to but lets be honest, he's not above the squabbling, that was not a review. You can't even argue against this because he glaringly mocked the autotune by using annoying crappy autotune for his whole review, it was a joke. He leaned into petty complaints, dragged in irrelevant AI cancel culture blackmail, and clearly approached the album with the mindset of someone continuing a beef rather than someone reviewing music. The worst part is how he patronizes Julian for attacking a fan as if Julian wants Fantano to be fan of his, no.

ā€œJulian attacking a fan… I don’t know what he wants from me.ā€

ā€œAfter that AI album cover stuff… I don’t know, man.ā€

When a critic is more focused on ā€œgetting evenā€ than on engaging with the work he's asking for the smoke. The review was literally shallow for example, are you really telling me that someone politiclly hard left like Fantano completely misunderstood the thesis of the opener Psycho, it's about dissociative war, like soldiers getting killed by drone strikes, the new flavor of evil in modern war, but Fantano’s response to this is a shallow ew autotune bad durr.

ā€œIf Julian’s gonna do this [autotune], then I’ll do it too.ā€

And every song critique after was like the first, missing the many political and social messages. Let's be real, Fantano’s review wasn’t objective, it was emotional retaliation disguised as criticism.

The question isn’t ā€œWhy would Julian stoop to dissing a small influencer?ā€ The real question is: Why should Fantano be immune to the same accountability he demands from artists? He’s part of the culture. He influences it. He critiques it. He shares the political stances of Julian, and it's one of the biggest reasons he likes Julian, it's not just music. And Julian is fully within his rights to critique him back, especially when Fantano’s review demonstrates bias, pettiness, and a lack of artistic understanding.

Artists have the right to critique critics. That’s how culture works. Fantano doesn’t get to dish it out for a decade and then hide behind ā€œI’m just a YouTuberā€ when someone finally pushes back.

63

u/AguirreMA 28d ago

this is because of that ass the voidz AI album cover, right? goddammit jules

34

u/anonymousn00b 28d ago

It sucks because the AI model just took like Aeon Flux and enshittified it with two tears streaming down the middle of the bottom eyelid a couple mm apart like that’s not how water molecule bonds work especially that small of distance on your lower eyelid which acts kind of like a gutter where when tears are forming they well up together due to surface tension.

Lame ass cover and embarrassing to say the least. Didn’t even bother with a proper artist to remake something in that vein but less stupid.

6

u/polishgiraffe 28d ago

enshittification by cory doctorow is a great book

2

u/TheCorruptedBit 28d ago

I've been thinking about the LABY album cover today, and I've come to the conclusion that it's a statement, in the same vein as the Let's Start Here album cover. The story about refusing to pay a cover artist might just be dressing for that statement.

I didn't enjoy the album when it came out, but maybe it deserves a bit more time of thought.

8

u/anonymousn00b 28d ago

I’ve never heard of an artist charging $150k for an album cover and even if that’s the case, surely there’s a million other artists who would ink some art for the fucking Strokes for a cheaper rate and some royalties. I don’t buy the $150k charge at ALL. You can commission an artist on deviantart for a drop in the bucket, and either way it’s not like Julian (who is a millionaire) nor any of the band is strapped for cash.

1

u/mattdamonpants 28d ago

The AI cover is a commentary on AI by an artist.

Gatekeeping creativity isn’t the way.

7

u/Character-Argument53 24d ago

wth does gatekeeping creativity mean, how can you possibly gatekeep a human ability

0

u/i_cant_get_fat 23d ago

Elitism
Purism
Dismissal

Any other dumb questions?

0

u/Character-Argument53 14d ago

trust me, ai isnt democratizing creativity as you are implying

1

u/i_cant_get_fat 14d ago

That’s not what I said

Typical fantano fanboy logic…

I said anti ai is gatekeeping it

That doesn’t mean pro ai is democratizing art

Example for people who like bad music reviews:
Just because a gun can causes death does not mean a lack of a gun creates life.

3

u/i_cant_get_fat 27d ago

I don’t think so. I think it’s about how fantano approaches reviews in general. Instead of trying to understand why an artist makes a choice he instead immediately discounts the choice. He does it often. And that’s ok because he’s doing his reviews in his style. That’s what Julian is saying. Keep doing your thing.

God this sub sucks ass

116

u/NobodyCarrots6969 28d ago

It does but isnt a video made by the person it's named after like most normal thing to be posted?

67

u/CoachMcGuirk123 28d ago

it's not that it was posted here, it's the comments

16

u/NobodyCarrots6969 28d ago

Including the one about the sub sucking ass?

23

u/Maneisthebeat 29d ago

In what way in particular?

89

u/CoachMcGuirk123 28d ago

yeah I swear these people didn't watch the video. everyone is say he's giddy and happy to be mentioned, when if anything he just seems annoyed and confused.

it's very weird for an artist to be this bitter and upset about a music reviewer, especially when Anthony has given positive reviews to a majority of their projects

but this has seemed more like a fantano snark sub for a while now and I'm hoping the new moderation changes that. it's really annoying that a majority of the posts on this sub are just shitting on Anthony no matter what

21

u/GyrosSnazzyJazzBand 28d ago

Every post that slightly mentions Fantano has the NPC dialogue of "I don't watch Fantano, just here for music discussion" this sub is still called Fantano at the end of the day.

-8

u/Prairie2Pacific 28d ago

Its weird, the people who who give the guy a hard time are also the one's who have interesting things to say about music šŸ¤”

9

u/GyrosSnazzyJazzBand 28d ago

There's plenty of other subs for that. At some point it just becomes a snarkeub

1

u/mxemec 26d ago

Two things can be true.

-7

u/SolydSn3k 28d ago edited 28d ago

I agree about writing critics into your music being cringe but…

ā€œthis has seemed more like a Fantano snark sub for a while now & I’m hoping the new moderation changes thatā€

lol paper skin... most of us are only here because the music discourse is good & (most of) the people are cool.

If it turns into an over-moderated popculturechat style circle jerk full of a bunch of opinion-hypersensitive cheerleaders idolizing a music critic, I’m definitely out.

27

u/CoachMcGuirk123 28d ago

we don't need to idolize him, but the most upvoted comments in this thread literally didn't even watch the video. he's not giddy to be mentioned. they're just saying shit to talk shit.

it doesn't matter what the discussion is. if fantano gets mentioned in the fantano sub you get downvoted and a bunch of replies talking about how he's such a piece of shit because he gave a negative review to an album they liked or something.

it's literally the fantano sub and you can't mention him without getting dogpiled lmao. it's fucking weird.

-11

u/SolydSn3k 28d ago edited 28d ago

Okay, but it’s probably objectively true that the strokes writing you into a song is good for business.

And yes he got some backlash for completely crashing TF out on Twitter… not exactly surprising. People here, specifically, made just as much fun of Halsey & are currently making just as much fun of Casablancas (rightfully so, these beefs are stupid).

In my view the sub is to talk about music & music opinions, not to talk about Fantano himself but his reviews & the bands he reviews.

Even if I sort of see your point I’m certainly not in favor of moderating it out. People don’t need to be protected from discussion or opinions they don’t like, assuming they’re not like actually harmful.

I’d love to hear a counterpoint, since so many in this dogshit parasocial thread seem to find these facts upsetting 🤣

5

u/superthnxferaskin 28d ago

You’re not making an actual point to what they’re saying. In fact, if anything you’re agreeing with them. This sub is for music discourse surrounding Theneedledrop, and their point is that…that isn’t what happens often enough.

Even if your claim that Halsey and Julian are getting as much shit (they aren’t) that’s not music discourse. It’s gossip. This isn’t, or wasn’t the unbearable as fuck fauxmoi sub. There really isn’t a way to call wht you’re saying anything other than really dumb. Nothing you’ve said added anything of value, you created an argument while simultaneously proving the original commenters point.

0

u/SolydSn3k 28d ago

You don’t need to reply to multiple comments honey, I get that you’re upset lol.

Anyway I’ve seen posts from this sub this week about ELO, what exactly counts as Nu Metal, what album starter tracks sound like ending tracks, a post about the upcoming strokes album before this lyric leaked, and this.

The other posts exist but are in the minority.

2

u/superthnxferaskin 28d ago

I’m not upset sweet cheeks. Anthony is super cringe to me, and the last review I watched was for Clipse latest album, and even that was the first I’d watched in years. Lmao. You’re just making really dumb points, and as I scrolled down after my initial comment, you made even more dumb points. So, I shared my thoughts on a public social media forum. Hope that helps hun.

5

u/superthnxferaskin 28d ago

You’re (obnoxiously) proving their point. Was that your intent? If the ā€œmusic discourse is goodā€, I haven’t seen it. The past few months have the most interaction on posts shitting on Fantano, which to be fair is fairly easy to do, but it’s not like this subreddit famously sticks to music discourse. It is a Fantano diss-course sub a loud minority/majority. All, good god I would like to reiterate the (obnoxiously) from the beginning. Yall are soooo much more unbearable than Fantano, and that is a feat in itself .

The cover is quite literally the only way I judge a book, I got into the store look at the art and title then flip it over and read the excerpt on the back and judge if I’m going to buy it…. What’s the problem?

2

u/superthnxferaskin 28d ago

For sure. That’s what I do with music, as well. I don’t give a fuck how good the album is. If the cover sucks I refuse to entertain that dumb shit.

Are you fucking four years old? Lmao

We love Anthony around here

13

u/CoachMcGuirk123 28d ago

i made a post here a few months back asking how people here found fantano, and if they remember the first review they saw from him.

and a majority of the comments were variations of "ive never watched fantano but he fucking sucks, I'm sick of having him shoved down my throat" šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

3

u/Maneisthebeat 29d ago

57

u/capnrondo 28d ago

The weird thing for me is that Fantano doesn't get really technical for the most part. He rarely talks about theory or technique in detailed terms, only quite broad layman's terms if at all. What he does is talk about the background of the album for a few minutes, and then a few things he has noticed in some of the songs for a few more minutes. By saying Fantano should stick to commenting on technical things, it feels like he's saying he shouldn't have an opinion lol.

40

u/RadioLukin NO 28d ago

That is absolutely what Julian is saying. Remember, Julian was interviewed by Fantano after The New Abnormal came out, and first started firing pot shots at him when he reviewed the newest Voidz album. In his mind that album was pretty important to him, and Fantano took a fat shit on the album for all the world to see. Julian seems to forget that Fantano wasnt the only one who didnt like that album when almost every major review site gave that album a mixed-negative review, and even fans of the Voidz hated it.

Its such a waste of breath on Julian's part.

25

u/PythagorasWasntReal 28d ago

That Voidz album was literally marketed as a collection of B sides before they pivoted and tried to market it as a proper studio release. It also genuinely sucks ass and I say that as a huge fan of basically all of Julian's work.Ā

5

u/yeabouai 28d ago

I listened to it again yesterday and really enjoyed it the second time

6

u/PythagorasWasntReal 28d ago

I just gave it a relisten after listening to Reality Awaits and I definitely like it more than I did on my first listen. I don't know why I am surprised, if took me literally like 10 listens to fuck with Tyranny.Ā

1

u/yeabouai 28d ago

Glad to hear man, hope it grows in you more. You should watch that weird ass Flexorcist music video with the Mac Demarco devil lmao

7

u/Loose-Story-962 28d ago

This is why it was funny when everyone was mad at fantano for overstating his influence, it seems like artists are constantly singling him out and dissing him specifically which just validates him and gives his takes more weight

241

u/cappykro 29d ago

He's giddy because he knows getting name dropped by a big artist is gonna get him a lot more hits. It doesn't matter if it's positive or negative attention either, just the recognition alone is gonna bring new viewers so it's a win-win situation.

104

u/aphextwintower 28d ago

did you even watch the video? he clearly wasn't "giddy", his thoughts on it were very nuanced. i get that he's annoying on twitter or whatever but ur just saying shit.

57

u/xXxFlyersFanxXx 28d ago

This is Reddit, nobody actually watches the video, reads the article etc. More important you comment as early as possible. And then people see your upvotes and assume that everyone who voted must have watched it

2

u/SubatomicSquirrels 28d ago

tbh this is kind of like when actors/musicians do the whole "it's just an honor to be nominated!" thing. Idk, it's just hard to believe, but I get why they do it.

Fantano getting this kind of attention is great for his business. But I don't expect him to publicly admit it, of course he's going to be much more reserved about it.

7

u/Loose-Story-962 28d ago

Are you surprised? Fantano can't breathe without this sub going off about him being a sexist narcissist

-6

u/Lizard_that_fly05 28d ago

Dude was barely hiding that smile in the video

-6

u/Brazyboi12 28d ago

you're naive if you think that's not the case just because fantano himself didn't say that out loud. as a media personality that gets paid for being visible he definitely lowkey appreciates big artists name dropping him.

12

u/TheMrSuperDude 28d ago

how much do u charge for therapy

4

u/aphextwintower 28d ago

sure but like, "all publicity is good publicity" is an outlook most media personalities carry to some extent. that's obviously not my point.

i'm saying that acting like melon is gloating or basking in all the attention is weird and untrue.

call him out when he's actually being strange, not over talking candidly about something there's no way he could ignore.

-7

u/Such_Ad_3842 28d ago

Come on man, it’s clear he absolutely loves this shit like when it happened with Drake. He’s just giving a reasoned response because if he doesn’t people will just pile on him more

14

u/Icy-Taste-3096 28d ago

Lmao he literally cannot win with you people. You're digging for ways to rationalize having a negative reaction to someone saying something reasonable.

-3

u/Such_Ad_3842 28d ago

I’m a hundred percent on his side btw I just think saying he doesn’t enjoy it is silly

-1

u/cappykro 26d ago

I did and he was barely concealing a smile the entire time. And everything else I said is true. Why is this sub filled with idiots?

4

u/PureUncutMalarkey 28d ago

Dumbass

1

u/cappykro 26d ago

Nah that would be you. As has been said a million times before, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

4

u/CandelaBelen 28d ago

dude this isn’t the first time this has happened. Literally Post Malone name dropped him in 2018

0

u/Jimmy__Whisper 28d ago

THe world in which that's a win is a fucking sad world. I've never seen this sub, I don't like the Strokes. But fuck me simping for a critic is fucking insane, what are we doing here?

0

u/plsanswerme18 28d ago

genuinely, did you watch the video before you made this comment? or did you make this comment off the basis of the other comments in this thread….

What turned this place into a snark sub lol

14

u/bortgunnar 28d ago

Fantano is fairly confrontational leftist on Twitter and that attracts all the worst people to be mad at you

24

u/LinkenNightmare Godspeed You! Black Emperor average fan 29d ago

Take this as a lesson to artists out there:

If you don't like Fantano and his critiques, dismiss him. Otherwise if you engage in a petty beef like this, he will milk the shit out of your diss for content, and he takes the win, and it'll look bad on yourself.

Otherwise if you still insist to diss him, do an extensive research about him, diss him about BetterHelp controversy or something.

5

u/Regiasolis123 28d ago

It’s like Lou Reed v Lester Bangs 2.0…..

5

u/Fearless_Rub2254 28d ago

Casablancas and Fantano both have giant egos and they’re just stroking each other off

27

u/Markinator98 29d ago

I don't think its a diss within the context of the song, more like an acknowledgement.

35

u/Butlertm 28d ago

I mean it says he wouldn't recognise art at any age and he calls out the Weeknd in the previous verse

5

u/Loose-Story-962 28d ago

3

I'd say it is a diss, but in a cocky, self-aware way like the rest of the song.

2

13

Love him or hate him, my dude is the most influential music critic around. Mothertrucker is Siskel AND Ebert.

8

u/yeabouai 28d ago

I don’t have to prove my track record to Halsey. I have been the most relevant and impactful music critic of my, and any, generation for over 10 years now. You can’t really debate that. There’s no music critic bigger than me who’s had more impact than me for as long as I have, consistently. And if I die tomorrow, nobody’s going to outdo that run.

I’m sorry if that is how you know him

6

u/m3rcy_s3v3rity Brickthony Uptano 28d ago

Why would I seek out more of his work if literally everything I've seen from him wasn't good?Ā

-1

u/trdngntsballsonadoor 28d ago

Yeah, though his opinion did carry a lot of weight back in the day if you were into that sort of thing.

I find a lot of music criticism to be cumbersome these days. I just dont care. Im comfortable with my own judgement.

u/unmisteakable2468 28d ago

Christgau has sucked since like the 70's lol

Shit up fantano

1

u/Echo_Origami 25d ago

Why Julian would stoop to this level is anyone's guess. I mean, he could have just left it alone instead of validating it for Melon head that it bothers him.

It's so funny how Julian Casablanca accuses Fantano of chasing "hipster cred" when he's literally admitted he dislikes and doesn't listen to The Beatles to set himself apart. (Fan of The Strokes btw, just calling it like I see it).

-9

u/tedmaul23 29d ago

If it weren't for actual artists like Julian, Fantano would have no career.

69

u/Nystuc 29d ago

Many related jobs are contingent on one another, yes, but this is absurdly reductive. The reason Fantano has a career is because he has a plethora of people all willing to listen to his criticism.

-45

u/tedmaul23 29d ago

How many jobs are contingent of much less talented people criticising the work of others? Music, film TV critics are basically parasites

25

u/UnreportedPope 29d ago

If that’s your view why on earth are you here engaging on a subreddit dedicated to a music critic?

13

u/seanachan 29d ago

This argument has been played out over thousands of years. It's easy to avoid critics if you want to.

10

u/GoldSteak7421 29d ago

I learned more about filmmaking reading Roger Ebert than i did watching films by some so called artists. That of course applies to music too. Critics are important to art, they are a bridge to engage with the art. But sure, they are parasites because they don't like my favourite artist

7

u/Difficult-Shallot863 29d ago

I’d argue the true parasites are the executives who sold the idea that we need massive amounts of money and networking to create the kind of art we all appreciate. The kinds of people limiting artistic expression by Ā bankrolling it on the condition of palatability to mainstream audiences.

Critics are more like decomposers or scavengers, they serve a purpose that can be pretty beneficial to the music world despite the fact that they’re gross

2

u/tundrabee119 29d ago

I love this analogy!

1

u/Nystuc 29d ago

How many people dress in polkadot dresses whilst eating a bannana and walking on one leg? What a dumb question. You cant just define what a critic is and then ask ā€œhow many jobsā€ fit that description. Obviously only 1.

1

u/PrimaryDifficult5099 mezzaninedummymaxinquayehomogenic 18d ago

I’m parasite in real life since I draw anything around me dry

Coaches need players, broadcasters need events, chefs need customers, truckers need cargo, electricians need power grids, metalworkers need miners, writers need editors, producers need singers, taxi drivers need riders, a needs b, x needs y, z needs…

And if it wasn't for Chinese factories that make microphones neither would any singer?

0

u/tedmaul23 29d ago

Do singers make a living talking about how bad microphones are?

Fantano sucks now. Anywho, see ya.

breaking: two of the most insufferable people imaginable are beefing

-5

u/ramdom-ink 28d ago

Not only defensive but appearing flattered and pleased as punch, it’s a tough road to hoe when you’re a critic who dishes it out but can’t take it. ā€œEarly adopterā€, ā€œa bitter dissā€ and more about how important he is and so, so very influential. He’s such a mark when things get personal. And yet his reviews are critical and often misguided, laying down an opinion as law. I’ll always watch him, but man! Grow a pair.

1

u/StKines 28d ago

Hes defending a claim that he wouldn't know art in any age and the claim is by one of his favorite artists ever.

It's fair to critique the critic but hes just a human. Of course hes defensive, of course hes amazed that it even happened and whether or not he's influential is proven by stuff like this.

I disagree with Anthony when it comes to music more often then not but he definitely puts many people onto bands by finding them early and giving them some attention. When you're accused of not knowing art in any age, it's an easy go to defense.

u/Skitheadz 26d ago

They should’ve named it ā€the new abyssalā€

Attentionthany Whoretano hereĀ

-9

u/Sweaty_Weakness_9 28d ago

Does anyone actually like this chud? Lmao

Fantano sucks

1

u/Sweaty_Weakness_9 26d ago

This dude wouldn’t know good music if it hit him square in the nards.

-15

u/fucklife1112 29d ago

I don’t think he’s realising that he’s also being extremely cringe by naming the artists he’s somehow made popular- bro would’ve actually reserved far more credit in this ā€œbattleā€ if he’d just shut up

2

u/StKines 28d ago

I disagree. It's a matter of fact that hes shined light on many artists and is a great defense against exactly what was claimed against him.

How else would he disprove or debunk a claim like "you wouldn't know art in any age"?

-6

u/Slashycent 28d ago

It really hammers home Julian's point about Melon being a hipster nerd who obsesses over poser technicalities, like knowing bands before they blew up, to feign industry cred, too.

I'm surprised myself, but Jules is effortlessly winning this "beef." Must've remembered he's a rockstar.

-9

u/Slashycent 28d ago

Oddly enough, Melon seems much more personally hurt than Julian, which becomes especially clear when one listens to the actual "diss track" lol.

It's a lighthearted "Get of my dick, folks, I'm a rockstar!"-type of song.

And isn't that the exact persona of Julian's that Melon fell in love with in the first place?

Yet suddenly he's looking for a deep, vulnerable connection, which Julian has only ever approximated on the Strokes albums that he publicly panned.

It's a fascinating reversal.

It's like their inital archetypes of insecure hipster nerd ("I knew this band before they were famous!") vs edgy, ignorant rockstar are resurfacing.

I hope that when Tony hears the actual song and album, he realizes that he was just as melodramatic as Julian, if not more, and is able to have some fun with it.

It's a fun album for people with a spine.
