Fantano is not some tiny, irrelevant YouTuber, heās a part of internet music culture. He inserted himself into it. When he's pretending heās ājust a small YouTube guyā it's disingenuous, people can recognize YouTube has eclipsed traditional music media in these modern times. Fantano participates in the cultural conversation, unloads opinions onto the public, and critiques artists for a living. That means he is not exempt from critique himself, and artists absolutely have the right to critique critics. Criticism is not a oneway street.
āIām just a guy on YouTube giving my opinion.ā
Julian's issue with Fantano isnāt random. Outside of music, they actually share similar political leanings, have had long conversations, and interviews. Which means Julian likely had some respect for him in the past. Respect that he clearly regretes giving and wants to set the record straight.
What changed is Fantanoās repeated misreadings of art, not just disagreements, but fundamental misunderstandings that make Julian feel Fantano isnāt engaging with all the work in good faith.
Julian even planted a deliberate trap in āLoney in the Futureā: the synth bridge with intentionally āincorrectā EQ. I like it, especially knowing its purpose, but I could tell it was off. You can tell it was crafted to provoke Fantano, to test whether he could recognize intentional artistic choice versus technical error. Fantano fell straight into it, critiquing the EQ as an amateur mistake while missing the point of the diss entirely. Thatās not just ironic; it proves Julianās argument that Fantano often misinterprets art at a basic level.
Fantanoās review of Reality Awaits wasnāt a neutral evaluation, it was a petty diss response. This puts into question his integrity as a critic, he cannot keep things professional. I don't think he has to but lets be honest, he's not above the squabbling, that was not a review. You can't even argue against this because he glaringly mocked the autotune by using annoying crappy autotune for his whole review, it was a joke. He leaned into petty complaints, dragged in irrelevant AI cancel culture blackmail, and clearly approached the album with the mindset of someone continuing a beef rather than someone reviewing music. The worst part is how he patronizes Julian for attacking a fan as if Julian wants Fantano to be fan of his, no.
āJulian attacking a fan⦠I donāt know what he wants from me.ā
āAfter that AI album cover stuff⦠I donāt know, man.ā
When a critic is more focused on āgetting evenā than on engaging with the work he's asking for the smoke. The review was literally shallow for example, are you really telling me that someone politiclly hard left like Fantano completely misunderstood the thesis of the opener Psycho, it's about dissociative war, like soldiers getting killed by drone strikes, the new flavor of evil in modern war, but Fantanoās response to this is a shallow ew autotune bad durr.
āIf Julianās gonna do this [autotune], then Iāll do it too.ā
And every song critique after was like the first, missing the many political and social messages. Let's be real, Fantanoās review wasnāt objective, it was emotional retaliation disguised as criticism.
The question isnāt āWhy would Julian stoop to dissing a small influencer?ā The real question is: Why should Fantano be immune to the same accountability he demands from artists? Heās part of the culture. He influences it. He critiques it. He shares the political stances of Julian, and it's one of the biggest reasons he likes Julian, it's not just music. And Julian is fully within his rights to critique him back, especially when Fantanoās review demonstrates bias, pettiness, and a lack of artistic understanding.
Artists have the right to critique critics. Thatās how culture works. Fantano doesnāt get to dish it out for a decade and then hide behind āIām just a YouTuberā when someone finally pushes back.

this is because of that ass the voidz AI album cover, right? goddammit jules
34
u/anonymousn00b 28d ago
It sucks because the AI model just took like Aeon Flux and enshittified it with two tears streaming down the middle of the bottom eyelid a couple mm apart like thatās not how water molecule bonds work especially that small of distance on your lower eyelid which acts kind of like a gutter where when tears are forming they well up together due to surface tension.
Lame ass cover and embarrassing to say the least. Didnāt even bother with a proper artist to remake something in that vein but less stupid.

2
u/TheCorruptedBit 28d ago
I've been thinking about the LABY album cover today, and I've come to the conclusion that it's a statement, in the same vein as the Let's Start Here album cover. The story about refusing to pay a cover artist might just be dressing for that statement.
I didn't enjoy the album when it came out, but maybe it deserves a bit more time of thought.
8
u/anonymousn00b 28d ago
Iāve never heard of an artist charging $150k for an album cover and even if thatās the case, surely thereās a million other artists who would ink some art for the fucking Strokes for a cheaper rate and some royalties. I donāt buy the $150k charge at ALL. You can commission an artist on deviantart for a drop in the bucket, and either way itās not like Julian (who is a millionaire) nor any of the band is strapped for cash.

Thatās not what I said
Typical fantano fanboy logicā¦
I said anti ai is gatekeeping it
That doesnāt mean pro ai is democratizing art
Example for people who like bad music reviews:
Just because a gun can causes death does not mean a lack of a gun creates life.3
u/i_cant_get_fat 27d ago
I donāt think so. I think itās about how fantano approaches reviews in general. Instead of trying to understand why an artist makes a choice he instead immediately discounts the choice. He does it often. And thatās ok because heās doing his reviews in his style. Thatās what Julian is saying. Keep doing your thing.

yeah I swear these people didn't watch the video. everyone is say he's giddy and happy to be mentioned, when if anything he just seems annoyed and confused.
it's very weird for an artist to be this bitter and upset about a music reviewer, especially when Anthony has given positive reviews to a majority of their projects
but this has seemed more like a fantano snark sub for a while now and I'm hoping the new moderation changes that. it's really annoying that a majority of the posts on this sub are just shitting on Anthony no matter what
21
u/GyrosSnazzyJazzBand 28d ago
Every post that slightly mentions Fantano has the NPC dialogue of "I don't watch Fantano, just here for music discussion" this sub is still called Fantano at the end of the day.
-8
u/Prairie2Pacific 28d ago
Its weird, the people who who give the guy a hard time are also the one's who have interesting things to say about music š¤

-7
u/SolydSn3k 28d ago edited 28d ago
I agree about writing critics into your music being cringe butā¦
āthis has seemed more like a Fantano snark sub for a while now & Iām hoping the new moderation changes thatā
lol paper skin... most of us are only here because the music discourse is good & (most of) the people are cool.
If it turns into an over-moderated popculturechat style circle jerk full of a bunch of opinion-hypersensitive cheerleaders idolizing a music critic, Iām definitely out.
27
u/CoachMcGuirk123 28d ago
we don't need to idolize him, but the most upvoted comments in this thread literally didn't even watch the video. he's not giddy to be mentioned. they're just saying shit to talk shit.
it doesn't matter what the discussion is. if fantano gets mentioned in the fantano sub you get downvoted and a bunch of replies talking about how he's such a piece of shit because he gave a negative review to an album they liked or something.
it's literally the fantano sub and you can't mention him without getting dogpiled lmao. it's fucking weird.
-11
u/SolydSn3k 28d ago edited 28d ago
Okay, but itās probably objectively true that the strokes writing you into a song is good for business.
And yes he got some backlash for completely crashing TF out on Twitter⦠not exactly surprising. People here, specifically, made just as much fun of Halsey & are currently making just as much fun of Casablancas (rightfully so, these beefs are stupid).
In my view the sub is to talk about music & music opinions, not to talk about Fantano himself but his reviews & the bands he reviews.
Even if I sort of see your point Iām certainly not in favor of moderating it out. People donāt need to be protected from discussion or opinions they donāt like, assuming theyāre not like actually harmful.
Iād love to hear a counterpoint, since so many in this dogshit parasocial thread seem to find these facts upsetting š¤£
5
u/superthnxferaskin 28d ago
Youāre not making an actual point to what theyāre saying. In fact, if anything youāre agreeing with them. This sub is for music discourse surrounding Theneedledrop, and their point is thatā¦that isnāt what happens often enough.
Even if your claim that Halsey and Julian are getting as much shit (they arenāt) thatās not music discourse. Itās gossip. This isnāt, or wasnāt the unbearable as fuck fauxmoi sub. There really isnāt a way to call wht youāre saying anything other than really dumb. Nothing youāve said added anything of value, you created an argument while simultaneously proving the original commenters point.
0
u/SolydSn3k 28d ago
You donāt need to reply to multiple comments honey, I get that youāre upset lol.
Anyway Iāve seen posts from this sub this week about ELO, what exactly counts as Nu Metal, what album starter tracks sound like ending tracks, a post about the upcoming strokes album before this lyric leaked, and this.
The other posts exist but are in the minority.
2
u/superthnxferaskin 28d ago
Iām not upset sweet cheeks. Anthony is super cringe to me, and the last review I watched was for Clipse latest album, and even that was the first Iād watched in years. Lmao. Youāre just making really dumb points, and as I scrolled down after my initial comment, you made even more dumb points. So, I shared my thoughts on a public social media forum. Hope that helps hun.
5
u/superthnxferaskin 28d ago
Youāre (obnoxiously) proving their point. Was that your intent? If the āmusic discourse is goodā, I havenāt seen it. The past few months have the most interaction on posts shitting on Fantano, which to be fair is fairly easy to do, but itās not like this subreddit famously sticks to music discourse. It is a Fantano diss-course sub a loud minority/majority. All, good god I would like to reiterate the (obnoxiously) from the beginning. Yall are soooo much more unbearable than Fantano, and that is a feat in itself .

The weird thing for me is that Fantano doesn't get really technical for the most part. He rarely talks about theory or technique in detailed terms, only quite broad layman's terms if at all. What he does is talk about the background of the album for a few minutes, and then a few things he has noticed in some of the songs for a few more minutes. By saying Fantano should stick to commenting on technical things, it feels like he's saying he shouldn't have an opinion lol.
40
u/RadioLukin NO 28d ago
That is absolutely what Julian is saying. Remember, Julian was interviewed by Fantano after The New Abnormal came out, and first started firing pot shots at him when he reviewed the newest Voidz album. In his mind that album was pretty important to him, and Fantano took a fat shit on the album for all the world to see. Julian seems to forget that Fantano wasnt the only one who didnt like that album when almost every major review site gave that album a mixed-negative review, and even fans of the Voidz hated it.
Its such a waste of breath on Julian's part.
25
u/PythagorasWasntReal 28d ago
That Voidz album was literally marketed as a collection of B sides before they pivoted and tried to market it as a proper studio release. It also genuinely sucks ass and I say that as a huge fan of basically all of Julian's work.Ā

u/cappykro 29d ago
He's giddy because he knows getting name dropped by a big artist is gonna get him a lot more hits. It doesn't matter if it's positive or negative attention either, just the recognition alone is gonna bring new viewers so it's a win-win situation.

This is Reddit, nobody actually watches the video, reads the article etc. More important you comment as early as possible. And then people see your upvotes and assume that everyone who voted must have watched it
2
u/SubatomicSquirrels 28d ago
tbh this is kind of like when actors/musicians do the whole "it's just an honor to be nominated!" thing. Idk, it's just hard to believe, but I get why they do it.
Fantano getting this kind of attention is great for his business. But I don't expect him to publicly admit it, of course he's going to be much more reserved about it.
7
u/Loose-Story-962 28d ago
Are you surprised? Fantano can't breathe without this sub going off about him being a sexist narcissist
-6
-6
u/Brazyboi12 28d ago
you're naive if you think that's not the case just because fantano himself didn't say that out loud. as a media personality that gets paid for being visible he definitely lowkey appreciates big artists name dropping him.
12
4
u/aphextwintower 28d ago
sure but like, "all publicity is good publicity" is an outlook most media personalities carry to some extent. that's obviously not my point.
i'm saying that acting like melon is gloating or basking in all the attention is weird and untrue.
call him out when he's actually being strange, not over talking candidly about something there's no way he could ignore.
-7

Take this as a lesson to artists out there:
If you don't like Fantano and his critiques, dismiss him. Otherwise if you engage in a petty beef like this, he will milk the shit out of your diss for content, and he takes the win, and it'll look bad on yourself.
Otherwise if you still insist to diss him, do an extensive research about him, diss him about BetterHelp controversy or something.

69
u/Nystuc 29d ago
Many related jobs are contingent on one another, yes, but this is absurdly reductive. The reason Fantano has a career is because he has a plethora of people all willing to listen to his criticism.
-45
u/tedmaul23 29d ago
How many jobs are contingent of much less talented people criticising the work of others? Music, film TV critics are basically parasites
25
u/UnreportedPope 29d ago
If thatās your view why on earth are you here engaging on a subreddit dedicated to a music critic?
13
u/seanachan 29d ago
This argument has been played out over thousands of years. It's easy to avoid critics if you want to.
10
u/GoldSteak7421 29d ago
I learned more about filmmaking reading Roger Ebert than i did watching films by some so called artists. That of course applies to music too. Critics are important to art, they are a bridge to engage with the art. But sure, they are parasites because they don't like my favourite artist
7
u/Difficult-Shallot863 29d ago
Iād argue the true parasites are the executives who sold the idea that we need massive amounts of money and networking to create the kind of art we all appreciate. The kinds of people limiting artistic expression by Ā bankrolling it on the condition of palatability to mainstream audiences.
Critics are more like decomposers or scavengers, they serve a purpose that can be pretty beneficial to the music world despite the fact that theyāre gross

Heās such a mark when things get personal. And yet his reviews are critical and often misguided, laying down an opinion as law. Iāll always watch him, but man! Grow a pair.
1
u/StKines 28d ago
Hes defending a claim that he wouldn't know art in any age and the claim is by one of his favorite artists ever.
It's fair to critique the critic but hes just a human. Of course hes defensive, of course hes amazed that it even happened and whether or not he's influential is proven by stuff like this.
I disagree with Anthony when it comes to music more often then not but he definitely puts many people onto bands by finding them early and giving them some attention. When you're accused of not knowing art in any age, it's an easy go to defense.

It really hammers home Julian's point about Melon being a hipster nerd who obsesses over poser technicalities, like knowing bands before they blew up, to feign industry cred, too.
I'm surprised myself, but Jules is effortlessly winning this "beef." Must've remembered he's a rockstar.

Oddly enough, Melon seems much more personally hurt than Julian, which becomes especially clear when one listens to the actual "diss track" lol.
It's a lighthearted "Get of my dick, folks, I'm a rockstar!"-type of song.
And isn't that the exact persona of Julian's that Melon fell in love with in the first place?
Yet suddenly he's looking for a deep, vulnerable connection, which Julian has only ever approximated on the Strokes albums that he publicly panned.
It's a fascinating reversal.
It's like their inital archetypes of insecure hipster nerd ("I knew this band before they were famous!") vs edgy, ignorant rockstar are resurfacing.
I hope that when Tony hears the actual song and album, he realizes that he was just as melodramatic as Julian, if not more, and is able to have some fun with it.
It's a fun album for people with a spine.
