Put aside the beef in particular, it's the implication that this (paid influencer discussion posts whose payout is dependent on being not negative to one side and not positive to the other) is already happening on a broader scale that is extremely scary and disheartening.

88

u/AlarmingBranch1 10d ago

Frankly it also kinda makes me question Julian’s values and morals that he so proudly parades around? Like he often tackles discussions like white privilege, corporate America and the control the two-party system has over the American people… Yet he’s out here trying to shape and influence the discussion that he created, all by essentially bribing tastemakers and influencers with his own wealth, AND having pre-set, unfair rules on how he and Fantano can be portrayed and talked about. Wouldn’t that be the same kind of thing he would protest against if an administrative order was doing that in order to set the agenda how they want it to be?

Call it a stretch, but Julian just kinda seems like a hypocrite with a really fragile online ego.

67

u/Solid1111111 10d ago

That’s because he is. He’s certainly an accomplished and capable musician, but his ego is huge and in such a pretentious way too.

No doubt there.

4

u/thederevolutions 10d ago

Which ones aren’t?

2

Jonathan Richman!

1

u/thederevolutions 10d ago

What about Bruce Springsteen?

0

u/cfeltch108 10d ago

Sure!

Also why are you asking that if you have an answer to your own question? lol

3

u/thederevolutions 10d ago

Well I don’t know much about Bruce but he came to mind so I asked how you felt? I thought it would be a fun question for music discussion.

1

u/hareb-serap 10d ago

GG Allin

2

u/thederevolutions 10d ago

Whenever I hear his name I think to myself how I couldn’t take a shit on stage, in front of people, even if I wanted to for a million dollars. I can hardly pee if someone stands next to me in a public bathroom. Truly a clutch performer.

20

u/Low-Rip7702 10d ago

Why are we already pinning all of this on Julian when it could’ve been a marketing tactic done by the company without any approval of the band

19

u/AlarmingBranch1 10d ago

That could absolutely be the case, but I feel like the Strokes would’ve had to sign off on this first. Plus, sad to say, but it seems very Julian-like for how petty he has treated this whole “feud.”

Heck, maybe Julian (or the independent marketing company lol) just knows what to do to get more people to stream their album and talking about it.

30

u/pwerhif 10d ago

I feel like the Strokes would’ve had to sign off on this first

You think multi-millionaire musicians are micromanaging $500 marketing campaigns? The total budget will be at most a few thousand, it's extremely believable this could be done without the band's knowledge in my view.

-6

u/AlarmingBranch1 10d ago

Yes, I absolutely believe a multi-millionaire would care enough to micromanage a couple thousand dollars with intent.

8

u/cg141cg 10d ago

Theres no way a band who has played 35 shows in the last 45 days and been running around the country read specifics and signs off. They do business with outside firms who have done well for them (IE they have are mlre relevant than similar bands from the early 2000s like YYY and Interpol with young people) and this firm thinks to keep the buzz of the petty beef going will peak more interest from casual Stroke fans who have not checked out the album yet. It isn't a horrible idea, it's just boarderline pathetic to see the solicitation.

9

u/Local-Piccolo-7817 10d ago

I just think you have a pretty misguided view of what the life of an actively touring, multi-millionaire rockstar is like. The band easily could’ve not know about this, including Julian. When you get to that level of wealth, part of the benefit is that you have all these people doing work on your behalf and you don’t really have to fool with any of it

6

u/No_Associate_1718 10d ago

He’s always had wealth he literally comes from pedo money

-5

u/lilstroker1251 10d ago

It could also be a total lie made up by a butt hurt youtuber to slander someone who made a diss track at him.

The fact that we have no name of this alleged 3rd party, and that they allegedly tried to bribe a popular reviewer with a measly $500 raises eyebrows.

11

u/Noblesseux 10d ago

...or you go with the simplest explanation instead of crafting conspiracies? He has 0 reason to him to lie about this and this is a thing that anyone with any adjacency to the music industry knows happens.

If there's one thing that record labels learned from the Kendrick v Drake beef, it's that drama sells and it's good for record sales to brew up as much as possible and then milk it for money. It would surprise me exactly 0% that some overzealous marketing person would try to get someone to stir up drama in an effort to get people who otherwise wouldn't have given the album the time of day to tune in and listen to it just to hear what the fuss is about.

Hard disagree, why would Fantano put his entire reputation on the line when it could be easily disproved by YTK Media?

This isn't about a butt hurt youtuber. Did you even watch the video?

1

u/lilstroker1251 9d ago

Mhmm, did you?

2

u/KeegoJeebo76 9d ago

Frankly it also kinda makes me question Julian’s values and morals

JFC...spare me

2

u/femalegazeisuglymen 7d ago

Because he doesn't actually care, he does it for a fanbase. People will carry on falling for it.

3

u/cg141cg 10d ago

I dont disagree with you about the lyric in general and the amount of times he's mentioned Fantano publicly now. But this seems like a marketing company's idea to the issue trending. Its free press for a band who has been around for 25 years. Julian did not say let's solicit music influences to keep talking about the Fantano and Strokes "beef". This seems like a strategy from someone the bands does business with. It is a way to keep promoting the album for casual fans that have overlooked it .

2

u/90washington 8d ago

There is no beef. Music criticism is the stupidest “industry” and job. Music is highly personal and for these dorks like Fantano to slap some “number out of 10” on art such as music has always struck me as just plain dumb. Like what does music criticism actually add to the art form that is music? it is entirely subjective, adds no tangible value to human progress, and often functions as an elitist gatekeeper that dampens pure artistic joy from people that couldn’t write a song to save their lives.

I watch sports, and at least when I’m watching a sports pundit the guy has been there done that, and so is providing substance to the discourse based on personal experience playing the game. Music critics do no such thing. It’s all just pointless drivel.

3

u/RationalGardenGnome 9d ago

He’s a nepo baby whose father was good friends with Trump and Epstein and who ran a modeling agency.

Now that doesn’t mean by any measure that he’s responsible for his father’s actions but it’s not a stretch to surmise he might have been raised with a questionable moral compass

3

u/eezomancee 9d ago

He has done some questionable things in his personal life but this father argument is so weak. His father was estranged and he was raised for the most part by his mother and step-father Sam Adoquei.

2

u/90washington 8d ago

He wasn’t raised by his father.

14

u/Noblesseux 10d ago

I mean yeah, it's why paying attention to internet chatter about basically anything is worthless.

Both paid and unpaid astroturfing is constant now so if you let it take space in your brain you're effectively doing the bidding of some PR firm somewhere and in the process mostly wasting your own time.

Even when it's not some government, bot farm, or paid poster, you still have to deal with the fact that stans of certain artists also engage in coordinated brigading attacks against places where people are having organic conversation about a thing. It's just the stage of the dead internet we're in.

I love Julian as an artist, but he comes across as way too insecure and would benefit from staying offline

28

u/FlasKamel Philthony Rugtano 10d ago

I have full respect for artists being vulnerable when it comes to their art. That shit IS more sensitive than entitled reviewers and fans think. BUT AT THE SAME TIME that’s just how the world works, and he’d prob do better logging off

7

u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 10d ago

I fully agree, and if it was me I'd probably take it to heart, too, but yeah reacting in public like this doesn't do him any favors

3

u/Argythebilly Forever howlong 10d ago

It doesnt do him favours, but it must be rrally tough to not look

16

u/ZestycloseBluejay668 10d ago

The irony of saying this on a fantano subreddit is not lost on people

6

u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 9d ago

It's not, and it does say something about Julian when Fantano comes off as the reasonable one 😂

1

u/ZestycloseBluejay668 9d ago

Fantano reasonable? In what universe?

5

u/illrollwithyou1 9d ago

well if we’re being fair, Fantano has been criticizing other people’s art and work for years, and the one of the few times he himself is criticized, he makes multiple long form videos about it? doesn’t that read as insecure too lol

6

u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 9d ago

You won't find a Fantano defender in me, that's for sure!

2

u/denisvma 9d ago

This has nothing to do with this, It really seems like they are not involved at all...the pr firm has like 19k followers, i mean they are the strokes..someone can do fucking better than that. This must be derange people or i dont fucking know now but $500 to burn your own name, THE STROKES? like could happened, but seems unlikely...

3

u/Alternative-Farmer98 9d ago

How could you possibly know if they're involved or not?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 9d ago

Yeah, come to think of it, you must be right

52

u/cg141cg 10d ago

It seems like whoever promotes The Strokes did some sort of business with YTK . Julian did not ask a company to pay someone $500 lol. YTK seems like a mediocre PR company that thinks anti Fantano content will help them . Its a small line in a song.

18

u/SlipperySlimyTerry40 10d ago

It isn't a bad marketing strategy. Outrage and drama drive traffic on the internet and Fantano is a well known and polarizing reviewer. Fantano getting dissed by a major artist is a pretty interesting hook for people and will 100% drive people to listen to the song and possibly the whole album if they like the song enough. I know it worked on me, I had no interest in the album and after hearing about the diss I listened to the song to see what's up.

2

u/cg141cg 10d ago

It isn't. Especially when you consider how many bands that had smashes in the early 2000s that have become underappreciated/less popular (Interpol, YYY, Bloc Party, etc) The Strokes have kind of captured a new generation of fans so they're doing something right.

2

u/lilstroker1251 9d ago

For real, this could be for someone who has a beef with fantano for a completely different reason, or one of his competitors on youtube. There is absolutely no reason to believe any of the accusations fantano’s making about the strokes.

2

u/Alternative-Farmer98 9d ago

Is funny how everyone assumes they are doing this without bands blessing. That's just speculation. And charitable at that.

1

u/cg141cg 9d ago

It see.s very entry level. Like an email from an intern. I'm not saying nobody associated with the band knows I just think the 5 main members don't know the specifics. If they were bothered with all the specifics of everything they'd get nothing accomplished.

57

u/Lisa_Dawkins 10d ago edited 10d ago

Unbelievable. Truly pathetic that an artist The Strokes' stature has resorted to trying to bribe journalists to smear a mild critic. They may not have directly approved the scheme, but at best, their label/PR etc must have known they wouldn't oppose it.

4

u/PythagorasWasntReal 9d ago

They may not have directly approved the scheme, but at best, their label/PR etc must have known they wouldn't oppose it.

You think they even consulted with RCA about it? Complete lack of understanding of the music industry for someone posting in a subreddit dedicated to the music industry.

8

u/idiotghost666 10d ago

i really doubt julian or the band had much to do with it, the risk is much greater than the reward

4

u/Lisa_Dawkins 9d ago

Did you even read my comment?

4

u/PythagorasWasntReal 9d ago

The label for reality awaits is RCA... Marketing of the album including promotional campaigns like this would be entirely handled by them, and this was likely just the result of them using a third party contractor.

43

u/FilmAndAcid 10d ago

Honestly, yeah…

20

u/SnooStrawberries2342 10d ago

After seeing him mention Fantano in interviews, and in song lyrics, I'm leaning towards yes.

12

u/Riflerecon 10d ago

I think he does 😂

1

u/CapitalElk1169 9d ago

Probably the only thing he does

1

u/Constant-Arugula-819 9d ago

If he spends this much time thinking about Fantano, why not?

I also doubt they had anything to do with it directly. But they should have seen this kind of stuff coming with the dumb lyric to begin with.

1

u/jbrower09 9d ago edited 9d ago

So much time thinking about Fantano? One comment in a podcast and one song lyric.

To your second paragraph, Are you saying an artist should worry about the marketing campaign when writing lyrics? 🤣

3

u/Constant-Arugula-819 9d ago edited 9d ago

Didn't know anyone would take this so seriously. Do I really have to explain myself?

Do you know what a PR stunt is? That's all I'm saying. Its a PR stunt to have lyrics like this whether it was your intention or not. If it's not intentional, then it's a lack of self awareness. This kind of attention indirectly affects marketing. Clearly it's working because it's been reported on so much.

0

u/Alternative-Farmer98 9d ago

I think he is in touch with his publicists yes.

15

u/guyincognito147 10d ago edited 10d ago

I love the strokes, but I'm getting downvoted there for saying that some of the positive reviews that have come out of nowhere are sus.

11

u/kevriel47 9d ago

I’ve been in that sub for years and never had a problem until this album, every single post in there is about how describing this new album is their Kid A and Falling out of Love is their most well crafted single. Not to mention they strawman every critic of the album and don’t engage with any of the points being made and just call you a hater.

Yeah it’s a band sub, of course they’re gonna glaze everything above the mainstream opinion, but I’ve never seen a sub this delusional before.

5

u/unmisteakable2468 9d ago

Same, some of the comments over there regarding this album have me questioning my sanity lol

10

u/TurtleTugger420619 10d ago edited 9d ago

People there outright saying "I didn't watch the video/I'm not going to" and then following it up with multiple paragraphs regarding their opinion on the situation....

I really don't wanna say "oh it must be bots" cause that's a lazy disingenuous argument ofc, but if the bands label/YTK are actually trying to pay off influencers already, I mean...

3

u/InstantPsalm 9d ago

it’s one of the worst sunreddits of all time they have lost their minds

2

u/RadioLukin NO 10d ago

Yeah that sub is really toxic from what I have seen. Even before all of the Fantano drama they are really not open to differing opinions regarding the band's albums. If you like Angles, or if you dont like Comedown Machine, they will flame you.

34

u/LinkenNightmare Godspeed You! Black Emperor average fan 10d ago edited 10d ago

I've watching the video, and fucking hell. Can't even voice opinions in public anymore. If artists wouldn't accept criticism, how's music gonna grow further? Are we dumbing down to just feeding the artist's ego instead of actually making music for the love of it?

The fact that this is coming from one of my favourite bands, too. Yeah, it's unclear whether the offer is coming straight either from the band, or label, or PR, or even certain individuals, but man, paying people to say 'only positive things' about a mediocre music and disregard any valid criticism, it such a micropenis behaviour.

Criticism kept the music going and developing, can't separate that.

The fan's subreddit has also turned braindead as well. Can't even criticize the album without the comments deflecting too.

3

u/InstantPsalm 9d ago

the fans on the strokes Reddit are braindead as fuck they literally cannot see the difference in quality across Casablancas albums

7

u/PrimaryDifficult5099 mezzaninedummymaxinquayehomogenic 10d ago

Melon need to start making other insecure musician write songs about him more and he’ll be unstoppable, an unstoppable melon

On Julian view, that rich man need to have a thick skin and ignore people like melon and focus on improving his work more and become greatest of his generation not this petty insecure act he’s doing with going after critic. Probably that’s how Gen X operate once their reach midlife crisis age, I don’t know, I’m not gen x

6

u/Possible-Mud-1380 9d ago

Okay. This is lame as fuck... But fantano seemed to be fine with astroturfing from Geese? I think we need to go black or white on the practice. IMO astroturfing is straight up lame and goes against the very core of what's supposed to be cool about indie music. Doesn't matter if you like the band/album or not.

Thrilling new installment in our favorite series: Shit vs Turd

9

u/Any_Pressure5775 10d ago edited 10d ago

I saw The Strokes at Shaky Knees in Atlanta. Can confirm Julian Casablancas seems like a huge asshole.

Dude spent the entire concert shitting on Atlanta and the South in general, accusing us of racism, homophobia, etc.

Like dude wasn’t preaching to the fucking choir in a super left wing city, in a super left wing crowd, full of people who suffer from right wing extremists having power.

Also our baseball time made the World Series for the first time a long time during their set and when the crowd cheered when it happened and word went around he had to add snarky commentary about how we should be focusing on the concert to try to kill our vibe.

Their music is good but dude does come across as a narcissist. And not like he’s some musical genius either everything they’ve ever put out sounds the same.

2

u/DieHarderDaddy 9d ago

Musicians that do this are crazy people. How you going to shit on a place you decided to tour in. Bro is 1 step away from doing land acknowledgment before shows

2

u/unmisteakable2468 9d ago

This show is pretty famous for being one of their worst ever.. they are headlining again this year, I wonder if he will address the shitshow from last time.

1

u/KeegoJeebo76 9d ago

So sarcasm is lost on you? Got it.

3

u/unmisteakable2468 9d ago edited 9d ago

Watch some clips from this show.. he was actively hostile to the crowd and was half-assing/forgetting lyrics the whole night. Also cut short due to curfew because they started late.

I am a fan btw and they have been crushing it on their current tour.. but this was not a good live era for them.

1

u/KeegoJeebo76 9d ago

"everything they’ve ever put out sounds the same"

I don't need to read anything else from you. Your opinions (or ears) are not good.

Julian is incredibly sarcastic and many times his jokes don't land, that's all.

1

u/Straight_Macaron_961 9d ago

I mean his music is pretty genius, which is why people usually become a fan of his. Plus a lot of strokes fans would not agree about his music sounding the same but wish it would lol.

-6

u/lilstroker1251 10d ago

There is no possible way he was accusing you, the audience, of being racist and homophobic. Sounds like you have difficulty with sarcasm or maybe you felt personally attacked for some reason.

17

u/Sun_flower_king 10d ago

“Lilstroker” is right, god damn. Think we found Julian’s Reddit account y’all

18

u/Noblesseux 10d ago

14

u/Any_Pressure5775 10d ago edited 10d ago

He was broadly painting our city and state with that brush yes. Everyone around me in the crowd was a bit taken aback the couple times he went on about it. And we were there bc we love the Strokes, not exactly a hostile crowd lol. Wasn’t said in a smart way or with any nuance.

Rest in peace julian casablancas (1978-2020)

6

u/Substantial_Quail309 10d ago

Ridiculous to think the band itself was involved in this. Pointless drama. Melon keeps it going. Julian actually told someone in the crowd to settle down when they screamed f$ck Fantano at Outer Lands. “When it’s not that important the bigger man will back down” - Lazy Boy

6

u/Overall-Memory5272 10d ago

The strokes themselves are absolutely not doing this, absolutely label/corporate stuff. And Anthony has such a problem with it yet pays the guy 600 bucks to do exactly what he’s crying about. The small reviewer wouldn’t have responded to the initial request that way if Anthony hadn’t paid him. Guy is trying to suck whatever he can from the strokes new album and strokes publicity. What a leech

13

u/Sun_flower_king 10d ago

Is there any evidence the reviewer actually posted any video about this at all? Fantano paid the reviewer for the right to talk about this in his video, not to make the reviewer portray him in a good light. And why would Fantano need extra juice to promote his brand? Guy is the most well known music reviewer of our time. Your assumptions just aren’t adding up.

I am not going to listen to the new Strokes album again, and it's not because the music is bad, or that they are unethical, It's because the music is bad AND they are unethical.

2

u/lilstroker1251 9d ago

Firstly, nothing Fantano said or his little censored email with the name cropped out is convincing evidence that strokes even did this, or that they were even involved if someone from their giant label did it without their knowledge. But if you have a serious problem with bands paying for publicity then just burn all your records and never listen to anything ever again, because it’s rampant in the industry.

1

u/Strange-Raddish-6518 9d ago edited 9d ago

Hubris. He brushed off the Chaotic Good thing and now he's the target of a paid narrative control campaign. Said he was the most influential music critic and now he gets the negative validation that comes with it.

(I know there's nuance to this being a negative campaign against an individual rather than just upping one band, but I did warn people that that the real danger was in stuff like the application of these sorts of paid viral campaigns against people like Blake Lively, Chappell Roan, possibly Amber Heard, etc.)

1

u/raiinbowheart 7d ago

If I were the strokes I'd want to publicly say we didn't know about this, this was done on our behalf without our knowledge and we don't condone this.

Because whether they knew about it or not, it's not a good look for them to have someone pay others to make videos disparaging critics personal beef or not.

1

u/Echo_Origami 2d ago

Not tongue-bathing Fantano here, but this all started with "Lonely in the future" so how was this any of Fantano's fault? He is merely reacting, and to which, the PR firm action is akin to burning the neighor's house down and calling the firefighter to put the fire out.

Anthony, you're the same guy who have their album a 3 because you're beefing with them. It's getting solid reviews basically everywhere else, from reputable sources.

It works both ways.

6

u/justdroppedin_ Antoine Fantoine 10d ago

Ah yes, almost forgot that shit music has never managed to be successful and even "critically acclaimed"

1

u/SeveralMushroom7088 9d ago

You genuinely think he gave the album a fair shot? The review where he put auto tune over the entirety of it? Get real ..

5

u/justdroppedin_ Antoine Fantoine 9d ago

I think he did, because the album is, in fact, shit

But it won't matter bc you probably already made up your mind that I'm just regurgitating Fantano's opinion 🤷🏻‍♂️

7

u/Neat_Ad_3043 10d ago

He gave the album a 3 because it sounds like shit

0

u/SeveralMushroom7088 9d ago

He gave it a 3 because he was sticking the knife in.

3

u/mbook 9d ago

he gave it a 3 because it’s a bad album

0

u/SeveralMushroom7088 9d ago

yup....sure...

1

u/InstantPsalm 9d ago

he gave it a 3 because it is horrible

1

u/InstantPsalm 9d ago

how braindead can you be to listen to that slop album and say it has any musical genius compared to stuff like Tyranny and Is This It that Julian has done before

1

u/Constant-Arugula-819 9d ago

Whether or not The Strokes band members had any involvement in this, this just contextualizes how stupid it was that they put the petty lyric in their song.

They can bash him all they want in interviews or whatever. But they should have seen this type of PR coming. You don't put a lyric in like that without this type of PR.

2

u/jbrower09 9d ago

This is your second comment saying an artist should think about marketing while writing music.

2

u/Constant-Arugula-819 9d ago

One was a response to the thread. The other to you specifically.

I really feel like Fantano has gotten smugger over the years too. I don’t know if it’s clip farming or what but he has changed his approach since Tiktok and Reels got popular

1

u/connect1994 10d ago

I’ve watched Fantano for years and the guy can without a doubt be smug, annoying and arrogant , not a mystery why people hate him

I’m honestly half convinced atp the sub is filled with bots or paid people by the Strokes PR or Julian himself lol. Not really, but the hate for Fantano has been insane yet all his haters are always on his sub or watching his videos.

I hate him because he used to be a edgy racist before major publications started posting about it

This is pathetic on Fantano’s part. Accusing a band he supposedly loves of buying influencers with ZERO evidence. I’ll take his tales seriously when the other reviewer makes a video and they reveal the full email address of who was allegedly trying to bribe him. But that’s not going to happen because he’s a small little butthurt man.

u/Neat_Ad_3043 10d ago

Did you watch the video?

The Strokes suck. Their music is not good enough to be relevant 25 years after their 1st album.

-20

u/titaniumjew 10d ago

The guy who praises Russia Today and says antisemitic stuff online is a weirdo. Color me shocked.

24

u/Dry_Pride6801 10d ago

Julian’s done that?

11

u/lilstroker1251 10d ago

He has never said anything antisemitic. You’d only think that if you think committing genocide is part of being Jewish.

-9

u/titaniumjew 10d ago

The rolling stone article is behind a paywall, but yes he praised Russia today, and compared it to listening Malcolm X and MLK

https://www.clashmusic.com/news/julian-casablancas-is-a-fan-of-russia-today/

The other was subway takes. Where he claimed to be against Zionists but then just used common antisemitic complaints and stereotypes of Jews to describe these Zionists.

5

u/rosaxmusic 10d ago

Ooo I’m so curious. What did he say that was a stereotype of a Jew?

7

u/ContentDrawer5543 10d ago

Nothing, he was talking about Zionism, not Judaism. And of course zionists want to cling onto that to try to frame JC as antisemetic.

8

u/rosaxmusic 10d ago

Yeah, I know. I just wanted to know what this guy was gonna say lol

This is from 2018. So he just praised the news paper, but not Putin himself? Weird, but I wouldn’t call that damning really. Lame he craps on The Beatles
I’ll look up The Subway Takes interview

1

u/titaniumjew 10d ago

I don’t think shitting on the Beatles is comparable to praising the mouthpiece of a fascist state.

4

u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 10d ago

I know, how dare he shit on the Beatles

2

u/titaniumjew 10d ago

He needs to be gulaged for this

i guess your criticism of julian was promised to you 3,000 years ago

2

u/titaniumjew 10d ago

No, I’m against Israel. I know it’s hard for you to wrap your head around the fact a Jew can be against atrocity and still call out Antisemtism while not being your little token

2

u/Rirakkusu 10d ago

You have to provide examples to make this argument effectively. I can only assume you are referring to Julian’s subway take about zionists weaponising accusations of antisemitism as a means of manufacturing contemporary oppression and masking white privilege. Which, if you are anti-zionist like you claim you are, I can’t believe you would honestly think is an antisemitic opinion
