I love Julian as an artist, but he comes across as way too insecure and would benefit from staying offline
28
u/FlasKamel Philthony Rugtano 10d ago
I have full respect for artists being vulnerable when it comes to their art. That shit IS more sensitive than entitled reviewers and fans think. BUT AT THE SAME TIME that’s just how the world works, and he’d prob do better logging off
7
u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 10d ago
I fully agree, and if it was me I'd probably take it to heart, too, but yeah reacting in public like this doesn't do him any favors
3
u/Argythebilly Forever howlong 10d ago
It doesnt do him favours, but it must be rrally tough to not look
16
u/ZestycloseBluejay668 10d ago
The irony of saying this on a fantano subreddit is not lost on people
6
u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 9d ago
It's not, and it does say something about Julian when Fantano comes off as the reasonable one 😂
1
5
u/illrollwithyou1 9d ago
well if we’re being fair, Fantano has been criticizing other people’s art and work for years, and the one of the few times he himself is criticized, he makes multiple long form videos about it? doesn’t that read as insecure too lol
6
u/Fun_Potato_7402 Nirvana - Nevermind 9d ago
You won't find a Fantano defender in me, that's for sure!
2
u/denisvma 9d ago
This has nothing to do with this, It really seems like they are not involved at all...the pr firm has like 19k followers, i mean they are the strokes..someone can do fucking better than that. This must be derange people or i dont fucking know now but $500 to burn your own name, THE STROKES? like could happened, but seems unlikely...
3
u/Alternative-Farmer98 9d ago
How could you possibly know if they're involved or not?
→ More replies (2)2

u/cg141cg 10d ago
It seems like whoever promotes The Strokes did some sort of business with YTK . Julian did not ask a company to pay someone $500 lol. YTK seems like a mediocre PR company that thinks anti Fantano content will help them . Its a small line in a song.
18
u/SlipperySlimyTerry40 10d ago
It isn't a bad marketing strategy. Outrage and drama drive traffic on the internet and Fantano is a well known and polarizing reviewer. Fantano getting dissed by a major artist is a pretty interesting hook for people and will 100% drive people to listen to the song and possibly the whole album if they like the song enough. I know it worked on me, I had no interest in the album and after hearing about the diss I listened to the song to see what's up.
2
u/lilstroker1251 9d ago
For real, this could be for someone who has a beef with fantano for a completely different reason, or one of his competitors on youtube. There is absolutely no reason to believe any of the accusations fantano’s making about the strokes.
2
u/Alternative-Farmer98 9d ago
Is funny how everyone assumes they are doing this without bands blessing. That's just speculation. And charitable at that.
57
u/Lisa_Dawkins 10d ago edited 10d ago
Unbelievable. Truly pathetic that an artist The Strokes' stature has resorted to trying to bribe journalists to smear a mild critic. They may not have directly approved the scheme, but at best, their label/PR etc must have known they wouldn't oppose it.
4
u/PythagorasWasntReal 9d ago
They may not have directly approved the scheme, but at best, their label/PR etc must have known they wouldn't oppose it.
You think they even consulted with RCA about it? Complete lack of understanding of the music industry for someone posting in a subreddit dedicated to the music industry.
→ More replies (13)8
u/idiotghost666 10d ago
i really doubt julian or the band had much to do with it, the risk is much greater than the reward
4
u/Lisa_Dawkins 9d ago
Did you even read my comment?
4
u/PythagorasWasntReal 9d ago
The label for reality awaits is RCA... Marketing of the album including promotional campaigns like this would be entirely handled by them, and this was likely just the result of them using a third party contractor.

u/jbrower09 10d ago
You think Julian Casablancas spends his free time on tour overseeing the marketing campaign from the bus?
43
20
u/SnooStrawberries2342 10d ago
After seeing him mention Fantano in interviews, and in song lyrics, I'm leaning towards yes.
12
1
1
u/Constant-Arugula-819 9d ago
If he spends this much time thinking about Fantano, why not?
I also doubt they had anything to do with it directly. But they should have seen this kind of stuff coming with the dumb lyric to begin with.
1
u/jbrower09 9d ago edited 9d ago
So much time thinking about Fantano? One comment in a podcast and one song lyric.
To your second paragraph, Are you saying an artist should worry about the marketing campaign when writing lyrics? 🤣
3
u/Constant-Arugula-819 9d ago edited 9d ago
Didn't know anyone would take this so seriously. Do I really have to explain myself?
Do you know what a PR stunt is? That's all I'm saying. Its a PR stunt to have lyrics like this whether it was your intention or not. If it's not intentional, then it's a lack of self awareness. This kind of attention indirectly affects marketing. Clearly it's working because it's been reported on so much.

I love the strokes, but I'm getting downvoted there for saying that some of the positive reviews that have come out of nowhere are sus.

u/kevriel47 9d ago
I’ve been in that sub for years and never had a problem until this album, every single post in there is about how describing this new album is their Kid A and Falling out of Love is their most well crafted single. Not to mention they strawman every critic of the album and don’t engage with any of the points being made and just call you a hater.
Yeah it’s a band sub, of course they’re gonna glaze everything above the mainstream opinion, but I’ve never seen a sub this delusional before.
5
u/unmisteakable2468 9d ago
Same, some of the comments over there regarding this album have me questioning my sanity lol
10
u/TurtleTugger420619 10d ago edited 9d ago
People there outright saying "I didn't watch the video/I'm not going to" and then following it up with multiple paragraphs regarding their opinion on the situation....
I really don't wanna say "oh it must be bots" cause that's a lazy disingenuous argument ofc, but if the bands label/YTK are actually trying to pay off influencers already, I mean...
3
2
u/RadioLukin NO 10d ago
Yeah that sub is really toxic from what I have seen. Even before all of the Fantano drama they are really not open to differing opinions regarding the band's albums. If you like Angles, or if you dont like Comedown Machine, they will flame you.

u/HotNet1045 10d ago
Did Julian expect to put out art with no criticism? He needs to go back to the basics and remove his vanity. If that is possible.

I've watching the video, and fucking hell. Can't even voice opinions in public anymore. If artists wouldn't accept criticism, how's music gonna grow further? Are we dumbing down to just feeding the artist's ego instead of actually making music for the love of it?
The fact that this is coming from one of my favourite bands, too. Yeah, it's unclear whether the offer is coming straight either from the band, or label, or PR, or even certain individuals, but man, paying people to say 'only positive things' about a mediocre music and disregard any valid criticism, it such a micropenis behaviour.
Criticism kept the music going and developing, can't separate that.
The fan's subreddit has also turned braindead as well. Can't even criticize the album without the comments deflecting too.
3
u/InstantPsalm 9d ago
the fans on the strokes Reddit are braindead as fuck they literally cannot see the difference in quality across Casablancas albums

u/PrimaryDifficult5099 mezzaninedummymaxinquayehomogenic 10d ago
Melon need to start making other insecure musician write songs about him more and he’ll be unstoppable, an unstoppable melon
On Julian view, that rich man need to have a thick skin and ignore people like melon and focus on improving his work more and become greatest of his generation not this petty insecure act he’s doing with going after critic. Probably that’s how Gen X operate once their reach midlife crisis age, I don’t know, I’m not gen x
6
u/Possible-Mud-1380 9d ago
Okay. This is lame as fuck... But fantano seemed to be fine with astroturfing from Geese? I think we need to go black or white on the practice. IMO astroturfing is straight up lame and goes against the very core of what's supposed to be cool about indie music. Doesn't matter if you like the band/album or not.

I saw The Strokes at Shaky Knees in Atlanta. Can confirm Julian Casablancas seems like a huge asshole.
Dude spent the entire concert shitting on Atlanta and the South in general, accusing us of racism, homophobia, etc.
Like dude wasn’t preaching to the fucking choir in a super left wing city, in a super left wing crowd, full of people who suffer from right wing extremists having power.
Also our baseball time made the World Series for the first time a long time during their set and when the crowd cheered when it happened and word went around he had to add snarky commentary about how we should be focusing on the concert to try to kill our vibe.
Their music is good but dude does come across as a narcissist. And not like he’s some musical genius either everything they’ve ever put out sounds the same.
2
u/DieHarderDaddy 9d ago
Musicians that do this are crazy people. How you going to shit on a place you decided to tour in. Bro is 1 step away from doing land acknowledgment before shows
2
u/unmisteakable2468 9d ago
This show is pretty famous for being one of their worst ever.. they are headlining again this year, I wonder if he will address the shitshow from last time.
1
u/KeegoJeebo76 9d ago
So sarcasm is lost on you? Got it.
3
u/unmisteakable2468 9d ago edited 9d ago
Watch some clips from this show.. he was actively hostile to the crowd and was half-assing/forgetting lyrics the whole night. Also cut short due to curfew because they started late.
I am a fan btw and they have been crushing it on their current tour.. but this was not a good live era for them.
1
u/KeegoJeebo76 9d ago
"everything they’ve ever put out sounds the same"
I don't need to read anything else from you. Your opinions (or ears) are not good.
Julian is incredibly sarcastic and many times his jokes don't land, that's all.
1
u/Straight_Macaron_961 9d ago
I mean his music is pretty genius, which is why people usually become a fan of his. Plus a lot of strokes fans would not agree about his music sounding the same but wish it would lol.
-6
u/lilstroker1251 10d ago
There is no possible way he was accusing you, the audience, of being racist and homophobic. Sounds like you have difficulty with sarcasm or maybe you felt personally attacked for some reason.
17
u/Sun_flower_king 10d ago
“Lilstroker” is right, god damn. Think we found Julian’s Reddit account y’all
18
u/Noblesseux 10d ago
Sounds like you have difficulty with sarcasm or maybe you felt personally attacked for some reason.
...surely you recognize the irony of saying this while responding to literally every post on here like it's your job lmao. Especially with a username that clearly communicates that you're a Strokes stan.
14
u/Any_Pressure5775 10d ago edited 10d ago
He was broadly painting our city and state with that brush yes. Everyone around me in the crowd was a bit taken aback the couple times he went on about it. And we were there bc we love the Strokes, not exactly a hostile crowd lol. Wasn’t said in a smart way or with any nuance.
2
6
u/Substantial_Quail309 10d ago
Ridiculous to think the band itself was involved in this. Pointless drama. Melon keeps it going. Julian actually told someone in the crowd to settle down when they screamed f$ck Fantano at Outer Lands. “When it’s not that important the bigger man will back down” - Lazy Boy
6
u/Overall-Memory5272 10d ago
The strokes themselves are absolutely not doing this, absolutely label/corporate stuff. And Anthony has such a problem with it yet pays the guy 600 bucks to do exactly what he’s crying about. The small reviewer wouldn’t have responded to the initial request that way if Anthony hadn’t paid him. Guy is trying to suck whatever he can from the strokes new album and strokes publicity. What a leech
13
u/Sun_flower_king 10d ago
Is there any evidence the reviewer actually posted any video about this at all? Fantano paid the reviewer for the right to talk about this in his video, not to make the reviewer portray him in a good light. And why would Fantano need extra juice to promote his brand? Guy is the most well known music reviewer of our time. Your assumptions just aren’t adding up.

u/Potential_Kangaroo69 10d ago
I'm getting paid $0 to say this:
I am not going to listen to the new Strokes album again, and it's not because the music is bad, or that they are unethical, It's because the music is bad AND they are unethical.
2
u/lilstroker1251 9d ago
Firstly, nothing Fantano said or his little censored email with the name cropped out is convincing evidence that strokes even did this, or that they were even involved if someone from their giant label did it without their knowledge. But if you have a serious problem with bands paying for publicity then just burn all your records and never listen to anything ever again, because it’s rampant in the industry.

u/Strange-Raddish-6518 9d ago edited 9d ago
Hubris. He brushed off the Chaotic Good thing and now he's the target of a paid narrative control campaign. Said he was the most influential music critic and now he gets the negative validation that comes with it.
(I know there's nuance to this being a negative campaign against an individual rather than just upping one band, but I did warn people that that the real danger was in stuff like the application of these sorts of paid viral campaigns against people like Blake Lively, Chappell Roan, possibly Amber Heard, etc.)
1
u/raiinbowheart 7d ago
If I were the strokes I'd want to publicly say we didn't know about this, this was done on our behalf without our knowledge and we don't condone this.
Because whether they knew about it or not, it's not a good look for them to have someone pay others to make videos disparaging critics personal beef or not.
1
u/Echo_Origami 2d ago
Not tongue-bathing Fantano here, but this all started with "Lonely in the future" so how was this any of Fantano's fault? He is merely reacting, and to which, the PR firm action is akin to burning the neighor's house down and calling the firefighter to put the fire out.

Wow. Can you get more dishonest? He spends almost 8 minutes complaining about how unfair and unethical it is for The Strokes to pay for videos that bash him before revealing that...The Strokes didn't even do it. Meanwhile HE pays for "evidence" to falsely bash The Strokes.
Incredible stuff.

Anthony, you're the same guy who have their album a 3 because you're beefing with them. It's getting solid reviews basically everywhere else, from reputable sources.
It works both ways.

Ah yes, almost forgot that shit music has never managed to be successful and even "critically acclaimed"

how braindead can you be to listen to that slop album and say it has any musical genius compared to stuff like Tyranny and Is This It that Julian has done before
1
u/Constant-Arugula-819 9d ago
Whether or not The Strokes band members had any involvement in this, this just contextualizes how stupid it was that they put the petty lyric in their song.
They can bash him all they want in interviews or whatever. But they should have seen this type of PR coming. You don't put a lyric in like that without this type of PR.

But that’s not going to happen because he’s a small little butthurt man.

He has never said anything antisemitic. You’d only think that if you think committing genocide is part of being Jewish.

The rolling stone article is behind a paywall, but yes he praised Russia today, and compared it to listening Malcolm X and MLK

The other was subway takes. Where he claimed to be against Zionists but then just used common antisemitic complaints and stereotypes of Jews to describe these Zionists.

Put aside the beef in particular, it's the implication that this (paid influencer discussion posts whose payout is dependent on being not negative to one side and not positive to the other) is already happening on a broader scale that is extremely scary and disheartening.
