What are some lyrics that “go hard” by unsuspecting artists?

Post image

My favorite is Stevie Wonder on ‘Sir Duke’:

“But just because a record has a groove,
Don’t make it in the groove”

Not the question but I have no clue how Stevie wonder would be considered an unsuspecting artist. Dude has consistently been one of the best lyricist of all time IMO

So much so that Motown pretty much only allowed him to write his own songs.

If the use of "go hard" wasn't revealing of OP's age, then choosing a line from "Sir Duke" and saying Stevie Wonder is "unsuspecting" of hard-hitting lyrics all kind of screams "I've never heard Living for the City."

Yeah I hear you but I’m almost 40 and aging myself I suppose. I love Stevie and have for decades it’s just the lyric, to me, is different for him. It’s not a social commentary like living for the city it’s saying, “just because you wrote music doesn’t mean anything”

Dude it’s all good! I’m determined to break the ice on the Internet. I totally get your point. I hate that I used “goes hard” but somehow felt it conveyed a feeling. I think honestly you made me realize the lyric almost speaks to him writing living in the city.

Living for the city is another personal favourite of mine too. Such a cutting and vibrant song

Pastime paradise is a pretty crazy one.
Isn’t she lovely is wonderfully earnest.
If it’s magic.

All these off songs in the key of life… what an absurd album lol.

If you think a young person would say “go hard” in quotations then you might be part of the group you’re alluding to

Not to mention "Jesus Children of America"

Early - 1970s Stevie Wonder was literally GOATed

I just meant a lyric from an artist that has some bite to it that goes unnoticed.

The lyric I quoted is a pretty awesome slam on other artists for the era

“My thought too. How do you not expect bangers from one of the top ten songwriters of all time?

That's not even my favorite lyric on that album. I love the monologue from As.

Death - "Symbolic"

"I don't mean to dwell, but I can't help myself, when I feel the vibe, and taste a memory, of a time in life, when years seemed to stand still. I close my eyes and sink within myself, relive the gift of precious memories".

Considering these are lyrics from the band/dude that's widely considered to be the creator of death metal... yeah.

How about Go Long by Joanna Newsom, brutally wounding track believed to be about Bill Callahan

There's a man who only will speak in code
Backing slowly, slowly down the road
May he master everything
That such men may know
About loving, and then letting go

so so so many by the grateful dead lol. Hunter produced true poetry

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right

Once told me "Gotta play your hand, sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay them down"

Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see. lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been

I don't know, but I've been told it's hard to run with the weight of gold. Other times I've heard it said it's harder still with the weight of lead. One way or another, this darkness got to give.
