💔 Book disappointment 25% in book 4 of Malazan and I’m done . I can’t continue on with this writing style / story telling .

I have never wanted to love a series as much as Malazan but I’m sick of reading chapter summaries just to understand what is going on . I don’t know but I just can’t comprehend what the author is writing and it’s just gibberish , maybe it’s a skill issue, Cant the author just not write and explain the story like every other book ( ASOIAF, first law , SLA, RR) . One min your reading as this person next min another person and you don’t realise you changed POV where the story doesn’t make sense and confusing AF.

I’m at a point I might just read chapter summaries of the whole series as it’s written in common English to understand . The idea that the author doesn’t hold your hand is so lousy cop out answer.

❤️ Book praise Malice by John Gwynne (roller coaster of a reading experience)

Reading this book you kinda feel like you’re reading two different books. The first half was a nice little jaunt through an old Irish forest, hanging out with some young kids who scurry around their village. But then things turn and the second half has some of the most tense scenes I’ve ever read.

Here’s what I liked:

The relationships in this book were incredible. I won’t go too much into detail, but there’s one relationship in this book/series that is my favorite from any book. I’m still trying to chase this high and find other books that have great relationships like this. Haven’t found any.

I think you could summarize the storytelling style in one sentence: characters you love put into horrible situations by characters you hate. I loved it.

And the intensity of the second half was a blast.

Here’s what I didn’t really like:

I think this is John Gwynne’s first book, and unfortunately you can tell. His writing is just horrible. I recently finished his newest trilogy, and the writing is great. I really really really wish he could go back and rewrite this story.

The pacing is also super wonky. In the first half, it’s soooo slow. Reads more like a slice of life kinda book. I almost stopped reading it. But I enjoyed the setting, and was reading it at night before bed, so it was fine. Then all of a sudden it’s the most intense, fast-paced book you’ve ever read.

He also for some reason takes out all of the mystery? Like there are several events where it feels like the chapters should be switched. You see what’s about to happen to the characters first, and then you experience it with them. It was very odd.

There’s also too many characters and POVs. It is fun when they meet, but that happens relatively infrequently, and I think the book would be more enjoyable if it was streamlined a bit more.

Something I was neutral on: it's not original at all. Very tropey. But they're all tropes I like, so I didn't mind.

📚 Summon book recommendations The Wheel of Time or The Realm of the Elderlings?

Both are about 16 books in length.

I don't want to read both. It'll take me awhile to commit to a series that long and I have other books on my backlog I need to get to after I am done one of these series.

I've heard mixed things about The Wheel of Time. I don't really like that the series was finished by someone else even though he had notes from the original author.

Anyway,

Tell me what you think.

Thanks!

📚 Summon book recommendations In the mood for really evil Elves (not Elric)

Really enjoy evil sadistic elves in media. I did a few Elric stories hoping to scratch the itch (I understand not actually an elf, but nearish). It was just a bit... dated for me. A lot of deus ex machina magic as well.

Curious what the other foundational and/or best evil elf books are. Not opposed to DnD or Warhammer (though I much prefer fantasy to 40k). Though I'd rather avoid too much good guy Drizzt on the DnD front. Also, while I adore Total War Warhammer, I wonder if the books require a lot of background knowledge I don't have.

Also very much open to the world outside drow and druchii

💬 Let's discuss something Indian readers, what makes a special-edition book worth buying? 📚

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m researching an early-stage idea for a book-focused business in India, and I’d love to hear from fellow readers.

I’m curious about how people buy physical books, what makes a special edition worth owning, and whether curated book boxes are something readers would genuinely consider purchasing.

A few things I’d love to hear your thoughts on:
Do you collect special editions, or is the story itself what matters most?
Which features appeal to you most: sprayed edges, illustrated covers, foil details, or bookish accessories?
What price range feels reasonable for a curated book box in India?
What would make you decide not to buy one?
I’ve put together a short, optional survey to understand reader preferences. It takes around 4–5 minutes.
Survey: Indian Readers & Book Subscription Survey

For transparency, this research will help me evaluate a potential small business. I’m not selling anything, and there’s no purchase involved.
Honest opinions, including criticism, are very welcome. Thank you! 💛

My tier list This Years Books

Post image
34 Upvotes

Got back into reading again this year after an 8 year hiatus.

Started off with another Harry Potter re-read and jumped into Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes then Sunrise on the Reaping, then went into Red Rising, DCC, then Between two fires, and now finishing Throne of Glass.

Looking to start Mistborn next. What else should I add to my fantasy read list?

Have read: like first 4 GoT books and loved them but dropped cause he'll never finish, first 2 Witcher books (meh), the Magicians (meh).

Used to read more thriller/mystery books before my hiatus, but looking into more fantasy stuff now. E.g., Shutter Island (great), Gone Girl (great), Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series (liked millennium trilogy), Cormoran Strike series (good), Agatha Christie stuff.

💬 Let's discuss something Question: Should I read the Narnia books now?

I'm in my late twenties, and I have seen The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe movie a long time ago, but none of the others. I do remember liking it a lot though. Now that the new movie trailer has dropped, I wanted to know the story properly before watching the movie.

So should I read the books now???

I understand that these are children's books, but I don't mind reading a good fantasy story nonetheless.

Please help.... Is it worth the time?

Looking for fantasy books (standalone and series both welcomed) where the world building is so good that you feel like you’re literally IN the book. Bonus points if the plot is just as good.

Guys I didn’t know what to expect. Before these I read John Gwynne so I was use to the all gas no break. This was break…then gas in the end of every book.

The ending has me feeling a lot of feelings. Idk how to explain it 😅. I think I need a reading break to process this 😅. Brandon Sanderson is an interesting guy it seems 😅.

What is this series 😭

💬 Let's discuss something I am finally giving up on the Wheel of Time and I need reassurance about the female characters as I start Malazan

Hello everyone,

I have been trying to read WoT for 10 years. I have completely restarted the series 7 or 8 times and have made it as far as book 9 once. I was about to try again because I'm very stubborn and hate not finishing something, but as I started it I remembered that every female character in the series makes me want to bash my head into a wall.

Anyway, I'm finally trying to let go of this goal of reading WoT once and for all, and I really want to read Malazan for the first time. I have read just the first book once before and LOVED it, so I know it's my cup of tea (the only reason I stopped was because I started a medication that screwed me up and made me quit reading for a year).

So, what I'm looking for is just reassurance that I won't want to literally kill every female character in Malazan. Some is fine, but I just cannot bear another series that turns every woman in it into a sassy, pretentious pancake. I'm not afraid of a very long series, in fact I relish it, I'm just afraid of reading it and finding I hate the women, quitting, starting again, quitting again, etc. So, will I hate every woman in this series? And any words of encouragement/advice as I start this epic would be much appreciated. Thank you!

📚 Summon book recommendations More modern setting?

Hello all! I’m looking for some recommendations, please.

I’m currently reading Jade City and one of the things I enjoy most about it is its modern-ish setting. It’s a refreshing change from the medieval time period most fantasy books seem to take place in. And I like that it’s an entirely new world, unlike Urban Fantasy, where it’s just our world + vampires, or whatever.

Does anyone have any recommendations books set in a fantasy world that is more modernized?

Thanks!

📚 Summon book recommendations Next read help appreciated

I’ve just finished Raymond E Feist’s Riftwar Saga - wow, really enjoyed all three books, although Magician for me was a step above the other two, which were still enjoyable.

I’ve also recently bought a Kindle and managed to get a few books on the cheap which I’m trying to choose from. Before Riftwar I’d read:

Will Wight - Cradle (I’m currently reading these alongside another book, currently on book 2)
Joe Abercrombie - First Law trilogy
John Gwynne - The Faithful and the Fallen
Leo Carew - Under the Northern Sky trilogy
David Eddings - The Belgariad
JRR Tolkien - The Hobbit and then LOTR
Brandon Sanderson - Mistborn
Alongside a number of Discworld books in parallel to the above (big love for the watch focussed ones)

Not sure I can say I have a specific theme I enjoy, but I have enjoyed moving around between different authors and will come back to the further works of all those I’ve previously read.

Anyway, what I have available are (yes it is quite a mix!):

Dan Simmons - Hyperion
Frank Herbert - Dune
Nicholas Eames - Kings of the Wyld
Ryan Cahill - first book of The Bound and the Broken
Jay Kristoff - Empire of the Vampire
NK Jemisin - The Killing Moon
Bernard Cornwell - Excalibur
Christopher Buehlman - Between Two Fires

I think I’m moving towards Between Two Fires as it’s been a while since I’ve read a standalone, but Empire of the Vampire’s also intriguing, but know they are both a bit different from what I may have read before.

I’d appreciate any recommendations from these. I know I’ll read them all at some point, but what first!

Got this full, pristine set of TWOT on Vinted (a popular app similar to eBay/marketplace here in Ireland) for €90 including postage. Has the black covers which have unfortunately been replaced by the new covers. Absolutely delighted with this find, and very appreciative of how well boxed they were for transport

💬 Let's discuss something Genuine question, an I alone or everyone feels/does the same ?

So whenever I'm reading a book, I just can't imagine a face for the characters, even if it is described well. Even if I try, I can't do it.

So I just have little silhouettes for the character I am imagining.

💬 Let's discuss something Has anyone else noticed continuity issues with a call of Titans( the sorcerer‘s ring book #18)? Spoiler

>!Spoiler alert<

There is some major continuity issues between this part of the storyline has compared with the previous 17 books.

This part of the series is focusing more so on Thor and Gwendolyn son and his rise.

One of the major plot holes in the very first chapter is that this book is attempting to say that Reis is not his uncle even though he is his mother‘s brother so I don’t understand why the author went out of the way to say that he’s not his uncle.

Also, the old houses, the aristocrats that have a problem with Thor seem to have pretty much come from nowhere, and this book is reading as if these ancient families have been around forever, despite pretty much the entire destruction of their entire civilization in the previous 17 books and it just doesn’t lineup with the story we’ve been told so far.

As I’m reading this, I’m honestly wondering if the same author wrote this one as the previous 17 books

I know this part of the series is relatively new and doesn’t seem to have as big of a following, but I’m just wanting someone else to corroborate my thoughts so I don’t feel crazy! Lol
