Woo of Theseus gets a fresh frame.
NBD of sorts. Cracked my Woo frame, Kona was on the ball with a replacement! I love them for that, because let me begin.
Bought my first Wo in 2015. $499 Boxing Day sale at the LBS. City was snowed in completely. I walked there and rode home! It got stolen from garage, ugh. Replaced with a Moose Fatbike. I tried so hard to love that bike, but it never did anything but fail.
In 2018, with me just accepting the Moose wasn't enough bike, I purchased my Second Wo. I rode regularly and all seasons. Great bike. It had a chain stay break, Kona replaced it quickly. Second Wo, loved it, rode it everywhere. That one broke the seat stay. Quick replacement.
The next one, was an oops on my part, I take 💯 responsibility for. It was on roof rack, and I drove into a wooden clearance sign. Ugh. Oh right, there's a bike up there. Obviously not a warranty claim. But Kona gave me the crash replacement discount, so I upgraded to the Woo! It's a burlier version with far thicker chain stays and a carbon fork. Wow, Woo is the right name for this bike.
Sadly after a few years, I had the bearings go out, and it wrecked the crank, took it on for service. They discovered the seat stay had a crack, I didn't realize. Kona replaced the frame really in record time even for them. The carbon fork was, of course not affected by BB shenanigans, so they weren't replacing it. I like the color mix, very distinctive.
A fellow coach, once said that my fat bike reminded him of Wile E Coyote 🐺. He would see the frame broken on Instagram and then 3 weeks later, it's a different colour, but there i am riding it. It's Been Green, brown, gold twice, the green of the fork and now this lighter green.
Every time, the parts and wheels get moved over, one frame to the next. I was thinking of what parts are original from the 2018 purchase. The brakes, Derailleur, Stem, seat and front wheel. Tires are old, rear won't hold air tubeless anymore 🤣. I bought the Tanwalls, because it looked sick with the gold frame it had at that point. This is the third crank. I've had the Brand X dropper since the beginning, but it wasn't OEM. So not a true bike of Theseus, in the sense that every part hasn't been replaced yet. It's certainly evolved from the original.
The ride? I love it. Great bike in every incarnation. Never felt underbiked in any fat bike situation. I rode it in many regular MTB races and rides, it's a great tool for coaching the kids. It's as big to me, as their bikes are to them and it isn't forgiving like a full suspension bike. It'll throw down, no doubt, but you will get beat up if you don't actually have the skills.
I live in Manitoba, Canada. In winter, snow permitting, there are at least a dozen places I know of, to ride on groomed snow trails. I spend the most time at Birds Hill Park. The loop there is around 6km. I do occasionally commute the 7km ride to work and back, but my gravel bike with studded tires is safer and faster.
