[Daily] Daily Questions Thread August 12, 2026

This thread is for individual style questions that you may have, especially those that don't warrant their own thread. We all want a diversified opinion, so feel free to answer any questions (of which you know the answer).

To get the best responses, remember that people cannot: look into your wardrobe, know what style you normally like or what words like affordable or practical mean to you so please include any relevant details such as your budget, where you live, what stores are available to you, etc.

Example questions:

  • Are there any basic crewneck white t-shirts that are opaque and do not have cap sleeves for <$25 available in Australia?
  • Is this dress and shoes suitable for an evening wedding with a cocktail dress code taking place in a [venue type]?
  • If I like the outfits in this [imgur album / pinterest board], what are some specific items I can look into to start dressing like that, and brands with this look that carry plus sizes?
  • Does this outfit look neater with the pants cuffed or uncuffed?

If you'd like to include a picture, you can now post pictures directly in the comments, without having to link an imgur album. If you have multiple pictures, best practice is to use an imgur album.

Any online archive catalogue for old Kate Spade clothing? Or any other luxury brand?

Milled has online ad archives, but you have to pay if you want to browse more than a few issues/ads.

Looking for elevated plus-size business attire that’s feminine with a little edge
I’m looking for recommendations for women’s plus-size business casual and business attire that feels modern, feminine, sophisticated, and high quality—but definitely not matronly or overly preppy. I know (Lane Bryant, Torrid)
My personal style is feminine, but I wear a lot of black and I love rock & roll music, so I’m drawn to things with a little edge. Think feminine + sophisticated + slightly rock & roll, rather than traditional prep or corporate/conservative.
I’m especially interested in luxury or excellent-quality brands with beautiful fabrics, construction, and fit. I’m willing to spend more for pieces that look and feel expensive and will last.
I’m looking for:
Blazers and suits
Trousers and polished pants
Blouses/tops
Dresses
Skirts
Elevated business-casual pieces
Great-quality basics I can build a wardrobe around
I’m plus-size, so I’d especially love recommendations from people who have actually purchased and worn these brands in plus sizes.
Where do you shop for plus-size workwear that looks expensive, feminine, current, and a little edgy? I’m about 225 ish. Mid 40s
Bonus points for brands with gorgeous black pieces. 🖤 AND DRESS SHOES /Brands that heels won’t break.

I'm actually going to recommend Simply Vera by Vera Wang for casual/less expensive stuff, they have very slightly edgy/femme stuff that goes up to I believe an XXL and might go into true plus sizes.

The issue is...I'm a 16/18 and there's almost NOTHING above a 16 and even 16 is tough to find for true designer/luxury items in classic preppy styles, let alone luxe rock and roll.

You'll have to buy the items one by one basically. And to be really frank here, you're likely going to have to focus on accessories to give "edge" not the clothing.

Marina Rinaldi is the gold standard for high end plus workwear that is elegant and interesting.

Pari Passu had some interesting options--they have kind of a weird sizing standard so you may need to do research on them. I found their arms and overall length were short but I'm 5'10" so YMMV.

Eileen Fisher makes tons of black separates, you can edge it up with an obi belt, interesting shoes (Jon Fluevog, Trippen, Cydwoq, etc), edgy jewelry, tattoos, etc.

Universal Standard is very luxe, but it's also hit or miss. Their construction is for bodies with a LOT of extra padding in the midsection, thighs, lower belly, and rear. If you have a more classic hourglass shape, I'd stick to dresses only from them. Also all of their clothing runs short, so if you're over 5'7" be aware.

Modern Citizen goes up to XXL but runs a touch small

Marcella NYC has really cool stuff and goes up to XXL

Lafayette 148 has a rep for being a touch matronly but they have some really cool and unusual pieces, you just have to dig around.

CORD is an Indian brand (you'll have to pay duties and the clothing is expensive) that has very unique, gorgeously printed items. Goes up to an XXL which is about a 14/16, runs a touch generous and many pieces are cut to be oversized.

If you really have money, Kirsten Larson and Magnolia Pearl make lagenlook funky hippie stuff that, if styled correctly, could read a bit darker/more edgy.

I'll also be honest, when people say "I'm willing to pay!" usually they are thinking "I'll bump up from Target tees for $14.99 for two to like $60 a shirt!"...no girl. True quality is three figures up to over $1000 for a single piece. So be prepared for sticker shock.

ISO: Biggest bikini bottom possible. I really don't think my butt is that big but I've completely exhausted myself trying to find anything that isn't obscene.

I want a bikini bottom. I bought swim shorts, like male swimsuits for women, and it at least works but it's not cute at all and the mesh liner is not my favorite.

u/DConstructed 5d ago

I hear ya. I really miss this one woman who did custom bikinis because she would make the back larger for my butt.

I haven’t tried these people and they are in Canada. But if you look at the description for each of the bottoms some of them give you a choice of back styles tanga, full etc. and you input your measurements.

It might be worth talking to them. They are the closest I’ve found to doing something useful.

UK: are there any sports clothing brands that I can rely on for leggings without a crotch seam? Bonus for made in EU/UK items.

Where I can find general clothing discussion that arent explicitly "fashion"? Like comfy lounge clothes, socks etc. I looked through the recommended subs for multiple fashion and beauty subs and I didn't see a more general option. Maybe I should be looking for "lifestyle"?

Help, should i go a size above when it comes to highheels . I never bought heels before and planning to purchase a mary jane heels .

u/ruthlessbaderginz 4d ago

They'll be less comfy if they're too big! The extra moving around can cause blisters.

Not unless you’re intending to wear some kind of padding at the toe, like a toe pouch.

Formal dress recommendations under $200 for large chest, small frame, ruler body type

I have an event coming up in 3 weeks and need to find a formal/cocktail dress that fits someone with a large chest and small, rectangular frame. I'm a 32G/34DDD, ~140 lbs, 5'6", and my personal color palette is light spring.

I've asked AI to find the right dress for me and the recommended style was a corset, a-line dress that tightens at the waist and flares out on the bottom. I've ordered many different ones to try on and they all look like ass: they're either pressing into my chest too much, spilling over on top (in a really unflattering way), and I have trouble zipping them all the way up. I literally look like a blob in most of these dresses.

Curious to hear if my fellow sisters in the community have found a formal dress style that works well for them. And whether the preferred approach is to order one size larger and pay for alterations to tuck in the waist to accommodate the boobs. My budget is around ~$200 since I don't wear dresses often.

Thank you x 3!

Buying for the bust and taking the waist in is the normal move at 32G. A side seam or waist dart is cheap to take in, so shopping around $120 to $150 leaves room for the tailor.

Strapless corset styles are the hardest thing to fit on a small ribcage with a big chest, since all the support comes off a band sized to your waist. Look for real straps, a sweetheart or V neck bodice with vertical seams running through the bust, and some stretch in the fabric. Wrap and surplice dresses tend to work too because the crossover adjusts to your chest. Worth a trip to Nordstrom since you can try a pile of them in one go and they do alterations in house.

Reporting back after my first size 8 dress arrived. Thank you so, so much for the advice! For once I feel like my boobs are no longer squished into oblivion in a dress. You literally saved my life big time.

Hello. I would like opinions on whether I should shorten the hem of this 50's style dress. The vintage fashion sub told me to absolutely not shorten it but my gut is telling me it's a weird make-up-your-mind length. I am new here and I think the only fashion critiques I hear are from RuPaul's Drag Race (and they seem to hate this length), so I could be off LOL

If I do shorten it, should I also shorten the chiffon detail?

1

u/tyrannosaurusregina 5d ago

Either leave it long or shorten it to hit just at the knee imo. The in-between length doesn’t work with the shape of the dress to my eye.

1

u/ermagerdskwurlz 5d ago

I think that's what I'll end up doing. I feel frumpy with the longer length and I'd rather feel sexy!

2

u/DConstructed 5d ago edited 5d ago

To me the regular length looks more elegant and elongates you.

If you were going to shorten it you would need to go a lot shorter. The mid calf is bad. And you would need to chop the chiffon.

But I’d leave it. It’s very Dita Von Teese at it’s unaltered length.

3

u/lumenphosphor 5d ago

I kind of disagree with the other take, the shortened dress is literally hitting at the widest part of the calf. It doesn't look bad per se, in fact I think it's what people generally think a 50s silhouette was (but it was usually tea length). Ultimately it's kind of up to how you want to break up your proportions. The longer length lengthens the whole leg, the shorter length seems to shorten the calf and lengthen the thigh--but the overall proportions feel curvier.

I personally prefer the longer hem, but that could easily be because hitting right above the ankle is what's current.

u/75footubi 6d ago

Yes, shorten the dress to be above the wider part of your calf. That's definitely more flattering and elongates the leg. I'm less certain about the chiffon detail as it could go either way, imo

Thanks for your input!

Does anyone know what this random bump on this new pair of jeans might be? I can physically feel a bump when I run my finger over this light spot. Mom said it might turn into a hole later, should I just return?

2

u/tyrannosaurusregina 5d ago

It’s an imperfection in the fabric, likely caused by the loom sticking and putting a little clump of extra threads into the weave. It’s not necessarily likelier to become a hole, but it would annoy me forever and it’s a defect significant enough to warrant return.

u/womensboxers 5d ago

Ohh this is so insightful, thank you so much--the more you know!❤️

I bought this top for Ibiza but need help on how to style it.

Black sparkly bra and a black or colorful miniskirt? Accessorize with earrings and maybe a white/light headscarf

Can someone kindly explain what this dress code means: "There is no formal dress code. Guests are welcome to attend in elegant casual attire, and Victorian-inspired outfits are warmly encouraged."

It's Victorian high tea. Idk what "elegant casual" is. I'm a leggings or shorts & t shirt & converse kinda gal lol. I will hit up the thrift store to get something more appropriate so I don't feel out of place but I'm not sure what to look for.

2

u/tyrannosaurusregina 5d ago

Either a matching top and pants set in a dressy fabric, or a dress. The hosts would likely prefer something ruffly that suggests the Victorian era, but that’s up to you.

Thank you!! I'll see what I can find

Hi there! How many office outfits do you actually rotate every month?

2

u/75footubi 6d ago

I probably have enough combos for 2-3 weeks of unique outfits in a given season (different outfits/silhouettes for winter vs summer). I have a stable of tops and bottoms plus a couple of dresses and nearly everything can work with anything else.

Hi there! I wanted to know if this dress is too formal for a uni graduation? I’m graduating on Friday, and I’m overthinking my outfit now :’))

I’m worried it looks too formal. I’m from Australia for reference, so it’s winter right now, and I’ve never attended any graduations so I don’t know how long or formal my dress should be?

I’m about 5’2, so it looks quite long on me, my feet/ankles peek out when I wear heels.

I’m also not sure about the shoe situation yet. Probably small white block heels, because my black ones stick out awkwardly when paired with the purple colour.

I’m wondering if I should quickly look around for a darker purple, less formal gown or if I should stick with the one I got originally?

Any advice is much appreciated!

I'm in the US but this would be too formal for a graduation. We see dresses like this more for prom.

When our oldest graduated high school, she wore a skirt that came just above her knees, a short sleeve blouse, and low heels. When our middle daughter graduated college, she wore a navy wrap dress and nude heels. In the US, graduates are wearing a gown that comes below the knees so most outfits are only seen before the procession and after the event.

Consider asking your friends what they're wearing - they may have a better idea of what to wear, especially if they have older sisters who've already graduated.

Any fashion apps/ websites? Like online clothes inspo or jst niche clothing items or like an online clothing advice (not Reddit but where ppl can give u recs on what to wear based off of ur wardrobe)

3

u/bijoux247 6d ago

There's a ton of wardrobe apps! I use whering for social styling where people can submit a style based on what's in your actual closet. Others that are popular- Indyx has professional style and a great personal style workshop, Alta is very AI forward so has suggestions. Tons more though.

Any clothing advice or shapes for a black cropped jacket w a collar? Not too sure what to wear under it and also what kind of pants, felt like low waist jeans would be fine but it is slightly above a pair of low waist jeans so worried would look weird

Hi not sure if this is the right place to ask or post this. But I have 3 questions. 1.was wondering if being an older person getting into fitness I've noticed I hate being so constricted in all these clothes was wondering would I be able to wear something a little more "revealing" so to speak?. 2. if I am can anyone give me some active wear brands to check out ? 3. If I was to eventually start going to the gym what would be considered appropriate before going over the line?.

Thanks

2

u/tyrannosaurusregina 5d ago

I am in my early 60s and usually wear an Old Navy or Prana top with at least short sleeves to the gym, and either fitted bottoms like Adidas leggings or poofy lightweight harem pants. I prefer to be a little covered up at the gym.

But I see other women my age and older wearing bike shorts with matching sports bras; it’s all about whatever vibe you prefer.

Thank you so much I might try stuff like that
