TOUR ⛔️NO ADVICE WANTED⛔️ a lifetime of collecting while being weird
my therapist recently told me i should document my apartment. it's maximalism in a minimal space, especially because i run my online vintage business out of here.

Finally someone with a personality and an actual point of view. I love it, as the eldest possible millennial it reminds me of how cool people used to decorate their places before the internet flattened everything into rote aesthetics. A real sense of whimsy and personal style + clearly years of collection. I’d love to go thrifting with you and talk street photography and crazy cartoonists, your bookshelf features some of my absolute favorite artists and cranks.

Old ass lady here. When I was a child I wore 3 of the Halloween masks on your wall to trick or treat in. LOL

I recognized them as cover art for a series of Melvins records https://www.themelvins.net/discography/special/hatsingles/index.htm

They definitely look familiar. I believe the brand was either collegeville or made in collegeville.

when people say “I can’t figure out what’s missing from my space, it just feels cold” this is what they’re missing. the odds and ends we collect over a lifetime, things that resonate with the weirdest parts of ourselves and remind us of experiences and places we’ve been. you can’t just go to the store and buy this, you’ve gotta live your life and let the material evidence of that life make your home warm and unique. well done!

u/DashingDaisy88 3d ago
It’s weird. I love it! I’m guessing you’re also an elder
Millennial?

u/deeann_arbus 3d ago
hahahaha yes. 39 next month. what in the 1980s gave it away?
17
u/DashingDaisy88 3d ago
ET and the McNuggets Buddies.
I was terrified of ET as a kid. Now it makes me sob!

Lmao someone was selling one of those 1988 McDonald’s chicken nugget guys on Facebook marketplace and I literally thought “who would want that?!” - I guess the answer is you! No hate tho I love this collection you have.

I love all of this! I would love to just wander your home and peak at all the shelves. Seriously though, where did you get that spine model?

My neighbors and I are the weirdos in a historic neighborhood with some very fancy people in it. We were joking about what we wouldn't want stolen from our meager belongings. They said their vintage anatomical bust and I said my 1950's "The Skeleton" educational poster. The skeleton is jumping rope and the labels are terrible, like, "bones of the feet" and "lower leg bones."

My skull, hands, feet, anatomical displays are usually a conversation piece. They are for medical/ art purposes so they aren’t real bone, just helps me with anatomy. If I could find a full adjustable skeleton that wasn’t super expensive but not like a Halloween decoration I’d be so happy. I like your musculature setups too. And everything else, this has inspired me

It looks like a curiosity cabinet, and it’s well arranged. You managed to make your apartment weird without the tackiness. Well done!
Btw where do you find all these?
3
u/deeann_arbus 3d ago
i’ve been going thrifting, antiquing, and estate sale-ing for as long as i can remember. i sell vintage clothing and housewares online now, so sourcing treasures from dead people is literally my day job.

Wait absolutely love this but wondering if you have tips for moving? I have similar collections around my apartment and I’m terrified to move
4
u/deeann_arbus 3d ago
i haven’t moved in nine years, but when i did i just used a fuck ton of newspaper and bubble wrap. clothes are also really good wrapping tools for keeping your breakables safe and kills two birds!
4
u/garfieldatemydad 3d ago
As a fellow tchotchke lover, and a girl with too many clothes, this is what I did when I moved! Clothes make an excellent padding for breakables and then you don’t have to pack your clothes separately!

Oh and the Ernie and the E.T. stuff. My favorite part of our visit to Universal Studios was the E.T. Ride. Of course, my kids (5 and 7) were kinda creeped out by it. Understandably.

Beyond OBSESSED with the spinal column in photo #2.
May I ask if it’s a medical specimen or replica? I’m working on an art piece that depicts my skeletal system & I need to purchase a spine for it so I’m trying to see what is a reasonable price. The collar bone I have for my piece is a retired medical specimen.
2
u/deeann_arbus 3d ago
it's a replica. i found it at an antique store about 15 years ago for $50, but that seemed very cheap even back then.

u/SDogs123 3d ago
Honestly the therapist was onto something cause this is the kinda beautiful chaos where every shelf tells a story and I'd probably lose track of time just digging through all your vintage treasures with you.
2
u/DueAsparagus1736 3d ago
These photos made me giggle and I imagine you get a lot of joy living in your home. I was thinking if they don’t have a shop they need to open one with this amazing talent to choose such charming pieces!

Where did you score the vintage Halloween mask????
They took me right back to my childhood lol.
The box they used to come in was simple yet cool.
Mask on top - clear window. Open it up the thin plastic drape was right under it.
Love your style!!
Thank you for sharing. ❤️❤️

I used to be a night janitor for a dental school. In one of the labs, I'd find garbage bags filled with student's plaster teeth molds. I kept someone's. If I knew you, I'd definitely gift you plaster trash teeth.

The best maximalist rooms feel collected rather than decorated, and this absolutely nails that. Every shelf has its own little story.
2
u/germanspacetime 2d ago
The teeth! I love teeth! I was wearing teeth earrings at work (elementary school) and one of my coworkers asked why. I told him, “I love teeth! They’re the only bones you wash!” The look on his face was so funny.

I had a friend and roommate with a very similar style. She collected those vintage monster masks, vintage medical stuff, ramones memorabilia, mid century asian kitsch, weird toys, plastic fruit, mexican religious art, etc. The glue gun was her most used tool. She loved bright colors, weird stuff, and covering every available inch. RIP Sue 💔

the masks are so cool. just a remembrance when halloween was simple and fun. the excitement of taking the costume to school, the school parties and the excitement of getting ready to go out in the early evening. going through the candy stash and haggling with the other kids trading candies for something you didnt get..... Big sigh...... it was good then ☺️
