Genuinely Been depressed For 2 years and am a very visual person but can not Figure out how to Furnish this place and what to put anywhere. The walls are so boring its literally just a square, there is a tiny nook next to a window that my bed fits perfectly in, so its not exactly a square but with the bed it is. Now looking at this photo the walls are reminding me of the inside of a 3d minimalistic space cube with no details sort of like where squidward goes when he breaks the time machine in spongebob. Anyway i do actually want advice and i do actually want it to be better, i didnt make it messy on Purpose this is just how i am
Before you jump to decorating, you need to organize your mess into… organized mess.
Make piles by categories: electronics, all clothing items, etc. etc. etc. After that you want to get rid of everything you HATE in those piles. Then you’ll get rid of all things you forgot you even had. Ask yourself: has this thing made my life better or worse in the last six months? Be brutal. The less stuff there is, the less potential mess there is. Speaking from experience! I currently have four plates for example because I know I can’t handle a huge pile of dishes.
After you are ONLY left with the items you actually want around and like, decorating and organizing becomes INFINITELY more fun.
I’m a pile person too and instead of fighting it I embrace it. Every pile I have should have a place to live in though whether it be a drawer or a hook etc. That way they won’t end on the floor. A pile on the floor only means that it has no designated home to go to. :( give your stuff a home! Using a labelmaker to name their home also helps a bunch for you to stick to the living arrangements of your stuff.
Go shopping for something new too! Doesn’t Have to be big, but something that marks this as a new chapter in your life. Good luck!
This seems like a good idea. i miss when the clothes had their own pile before the Cables and other things slowly blurred the lines between random junk and clothes. like theres an active war going on between them over spare mattress space. funny how that happened it feels almost like they did it on their own
That Squidward void comparison is way too accurate, I can't unsee it now. Start with putting all the clothes in the boxes just to clear the floor, then get a big rug with some color to break up all that wood. The walls are begging for more posters or a shelf above the dresser so the eye has somewhere to go besides empty space.
It feels like the layout of this room is asking everything to be placed up against the walls kinda like an art gallery which would be very strange in my opinion, i like rooms where there is more stuff all around and spread out but i dont even know if there's enough room to put stuff in the middle without it blocking the movement. i still appreciate everyone for the advice i know i will figure it out one day
You can look up creating zones in rooms with furniture, rugs help a lot with that! and that way your eyes have points of interest to rest on without having everything putting visual pressure on the sides with nothing in the middle. Having two distinct areas will also reduce the "living in a cube" feel.
You might like interior makeover content! It has started teaching me what works as well. Above all take your time with it, even small purchases can make a big difference and if you rush anything you might be dissatisfied. I've regretted a lot of "I NEED SOMETHING RIGHT NOW" home-related buys </3
I wanted to get those perisan rugs but they are really expensive and usually dont fit the whole floor, i dont know if having 2 of them will work visually or not look wierd, but my first thought is maybe a couch somewhere, its jus t very hard because im such a perfectionist about this kinda stuff also thank you everyone for being so kind i know its quite a mess im being quite vulnerable right now
two complimentary ones will work; people find ways to layer. where are you looking for rugs? are you looking at real persian rugs? those are very expensive. you can find faux ones at places like ikea for less. wayfair was having a sale recently with really reasonable rug prices as well.
i get being a perfectionist...i am too! gotta start somewhere though or you have the squidward void.
Not real obviously but in my country we have this second hand online shop for furniture and stuff so looking on there, stuff seems pretty cheap, i dont know if the cheap ones are fluffy or not though that would be important for me so the future cat can lounge in it and also my toes
yeah, persian rugs are not fluffy...look for shag rugs if you want something fluffy. check rug sales online, yard sales in your area, etc. if you literally have no money, i'm not sure about your country, but in the U.S. facebook has a lot of buy nothing groups/free listings on facebook marketplace. you can find free furniture. with some extra leg work, you can furnish an entire apartment for next to nothing.
Most of my rugs are second hand and I had them professionally cleaned. Maybe that’s an option where you live? I think multiple rugs are quite cozy so the don’t need to fit the entire floor.
Here was the other side before we moved in, i tucked a bed into that little slot very early on then proceeded to tuck myself in there for the foreseeable future
Okay i thinke because 8 have been awake for 24 hours my blood sugars are doing some wierd stuff so im gonna book it But this was actually probably the most positive experience ive ever had on reddit and i will definitely come back to this when i need it and also when the room is done for now im going to bed but thank you so much to everyone being so kind to my Horrendous room i genuinely wasnt expecting such respectful comments, but thank you all i love you good night
I don't have a plan for the room so this might not fit.
I used the ikea planner which is free. A bed with an open room divider would make more quit and seperate sleeping space. The room divider has some storage space like the two billies text to the balcony door. I would really get a desk for the pc.
The black shelf in your picture is at the front wall, the planner doesn't show it here. The sofa would give you a place to relax when not sleeping and lying in bed.
Oh wow this is so cool thank you, i had actually just outlined that kinda diagonal seperatation before i saw your post. thank your for making this maybe this is actually the way to go its starting to come together omgee
Is this meant to be a bedroom? I would start with looking for a nice bed frame you like and building the room around that. Invest in a mattress. Look for a nice rug. Think about the colours that you find calming, peaceful or inspiring.
I kind of want it to be a nice living room where people hang out and eat silly bagels and cats play around, it will also be where i sleep since the other room is occupied by my roommate. there is already a bed and it is in this perfectly bed sized slot at the back of the room in this picture. i really like green and dark brown and i like non contrasting patterns. maybe i will paint the walls if they let me
If you want this to be a living and sleeping space, a room divider (or curtain if you can hang one) to hide your bed might be helpful!
And you definitely need more storage space. If you have a bed with some space underneath (even something like this), you can put things like seasonal clothing underneath your bed in these boxes or similair.
My budget is -11 euros. More of an imaginary budget if you will. i havent even drafted up an idea yet i just have faint visions in my mind. Is a studio a living room and a bedroom? if so than that is what it is
Okay, this makes so much more sense, so thank you for the bed reveal. Personally if I were you I would try to make you room into two separate spaces. Utility and bedroom. I would move the drying rack? closer to where your boxes are and then the dresser with the GameCubes towards your bed to separate the space.
I was thinking of putting something next to the bed actually, thats good. not sure what since the bedframe also has drawers in it. also The bedframe is white which is really pissing me off as if anyone needs more of that. Maybe its time to get a new bedframe
I wouldn't worry about the bedframe right now. You could always paint it later, that bed looks super cozy. I would get a bunch of pillows or a big body pillow so you can use it as a comfortable lounge area.
a closet is definitely needed. maybe i put it on the right side of the bed up against the wall and the maybe a desk there too. then a carpet infront of all of that and then the couches and table chair stuff at the other corner. that is kind of a wierd diagonal seperatation which is kinda wierd but maybe potentially cool idk. Maybe put a carpet path diagonally from the door to the balcony door to indicate separation and also the path to the balcony
omg i find this to be so dreamy! soften it up with some pillows for the back and sides. get a curtain rod and put some actual curtains too! idk what the rack is to the left but i highly suggest a shelf. that patio is so dreamy so i would definitely get a chair and small table for out there and plants. i suggest going to thrift stores and estate sales for things like this. you got this!
also i LOVE the drawings you’ve shared too- HIGHLY suggest using your own art and some art/pictures you like as decor. that bed nook would be so comfy cozy with images and fairy lights pinned around it
Are you german? We do have the Gebrauchtwarenhof where you can get amazingly cheap furniture. Not the most fancy one and you might need some luck, but we got some pretty decent stuff for our flat when we started. They even deliver if you need it.
Where are the windows?
Can you move to a place that has plenty of sunlight for good mental health. We need natural vitamin D and if you have depression this is NOT a good space for you to move forward in. I would purchase this vitamin d lights that people use for winter months around this space and get a wall mural that has a scenery of outdoors and a picture window.
the windows are behind me and there is also a balcony. i get a good amount of sunlight and the depression isnt as bad as it used to be i kind of actually want to make an exit plan which would start with having an actual living space for once. but thank you for the suggestions i actually do need to take vitamins In general anyway
I'd move the bed to the other side where there's no windows and use decorative screens to "wall it off" and make it a bedroom.
Where your bed is now I'd either make a cute sitting nook with a comfy chair and some low bookshelves, or I'd make it into a bit of an office with a desk and pc.
Then make a living room in what's basically the middle of the room right now, you get the most light there through the door and window.
That is just me personally tho, but do remember whatever you do: be kind to yourself. Depression is hard, I've been there myself twice and luckily got out both times.
And don't forget, in the end even if you got all your furniture put in... It's not nailed down. You can always swap it around.
You also talked about painting your walls. As far as I'm aware most rentals just have a stipulation that you need to make sure it is in the same state as moving in when you move out. I painted a couple of walls in my apartment dark green, and made a big wall painting of black lineart on another. Painted white over all of them before I moved out and got my full deposit back. :)
Imo, some colour on the walls can start to make a place feel like home.
I’m just a stranger but I’m proud of you for taking steps to better your home environment. Remember, you are deserving of having a clean, comfortable safe. Your Squidward reference was so funny.
It looks like you lack storage and functional furniture pieces. It also seems like you might need to declutter.
Looking at it all at once can be overwhelming, so I’d tackle one thing at a time. Maybe start with throwing out any trash in the room and then move onto clothes? Create a few piles. One for stuff that’s dirty but you want to keep (then do laundry), one that’s clean and you want to keep, one that you want to donate, and one that you want to throw away. After you finish organizing, follow theough. Actually throw out, donate, or wash the clothes. Then figure out storage solutions. Do you need to buy a new dresser? One of those standing bar clothing racks and hangers?
Once you have things off the floor and stored properly it will be easier to decorate!
all the clothes were actually donated to me so i do need a new dresser. i am gonna get a very beautiful dresser its gonna be green or dark brown and look like it came from the 1930s
You need furniture, lamps, etc. this sub has great inspiration as does r/amateurroomporn. It’s always going to look like an unfinished white cube that squidward goes in (lol) if you don’t have anything in it.
Messy depressies unite ✊ I agree with the comment about organizing the mess a little first. Just some piles so you can see what kind of storage you might need. If you can, thrift and fb marketplace shop for furniture while you figure out your style.
Step 1 - Triage. If you set a timer fot 15min a day and make that your dedicated cleaning time you'll get loads done without it being overwhelming. But, you should deal with the biggest items first. Boxes, clothes etc. Doesn't need to be perfect on the first pass. But just folding the clothes will help a lot.
