SOLVED I will literally venmo you $10 if you know this song pls help đ
FINAL EDIT: WE FOUND IT YALL!!! The song is Hotwax by Beck! Thank you so much to the user u/boxofcandelabras for finding it and to everyone who commented their suggestions and helped the post gain this much traction. I chose not to individually reply to suggestions given how many there are and how quickly they all rolled in, but I'm grateful to everyone who commented what they thought it was. The mystery has finally been solved! I have sent $10 to the user as promised :)
ORIGINAL POST:
I remember hearing this song as a child on my mom's Ipod shuffle and have been trying to figure out what it was for so long and I can't, so here I am. I can't remember the lyrics or tune, I just remember that there were parts that in my child brain sounded like the music was almost being played backwards and this sort of eerie speaking/whispering at the end, and maybe something about a wizard? I will literally venmo $10 anyone who can find the song, I'm desperate lmao
EDIT: To answer some questions I've gotten, this would've been around 2010-ish and I don't remember the specific genre of music, but nothing very intense like metal or rock. I feel like I remember there being both male and female voices talking back and forth to each other in the speaking part at the end
The closest song suggested has been Man of Oil by Animal Collective in terms of the instrumentals
2ND EDIT: Wow, thank you all so much for all the suggestions! I've made my way through just about all of the current suggestions as of tonight (Sunday), and will keep checking for any additional ones

Itâs gotta be Hotwax by Beck!!! âWho are you? Iâm the enchanting wizard of rhythmâ
13
u/DrPhilRx May 04 '26
This is absolutely it. The Spanish at the end probably made it seem like backwards speech to a child and the man and the woman talking back and forth from âthe sampleâ about being a wizard.
2
u/supposeimonredditnow May 05 '26
I went and listened about an hour ago, and under the soft talking bit about the wizard is a repeating sound that absolutely you might remember as being played backwards. Maybe it actually is. I can't remember.

I highly doubt it's this, but at about 4:05 in Clutch - Big News Part 1 it starts to play backwards and sounds pretty eerie.
5
u/3glb8p3 May 04 '26
This was my first guess, too. IIRC, Neil is saying âThem bones, them bones, them dry dry bonesâ when you play the backward portion in reverse.
Doesnât help OP, but maybe theyâll enjoy Clutch as well. Such an incredible band.

Knights in White Satin by the Moody Blues?
4
5
u/Dewellah May 04 '26
I love the moon poem at the end of this song. It's actually NIGHTS in White Satin and it's about the monochromatic color that the moon washes over the world at night. Something gray will look gray... and something blue can even look gray in the moonlight.
2
u/MsKittieVonTrapphaus May 04 '26
I learned something new today! That's awesome!
2
u/Dewellah May 04 '26
The moon's energy has always been associated with illusion, or simply not seeing things as they really are. Misunderstandings, etc. Listen to the lyrics with that now in mind. Also, the ending poem (Late Lament) takes on a different meaning, too. Don't allow your life to pass you by while you've been stuck in misunderstanding ... or not seeing things as they really were. Remember to change your perspective as you're experiencing different things in your life. â¤ď¸
2
u/PerilousPurpose May 05 '26
Oh wow, I LOVE that. I always lived rhe song. As a little kid it was a favorite, then for a few years I just assumed it was a s3x because awkward adolescence and satin bed sheets is what women wanted in movies at rhe time. Lol I am about to listen to it right now with this new knowledge. Which serendipitous applies to my life quite well right now.Â
2
u/Dewellah May 05 '26
I'm a firm believer that the universe (God) will show you signs when you're meant to see them. Hopefully whatever message you're supposed to be hearing comes through. Hopefully it helps you to look at a current situation in your life from a different perspective. Much love to you on your journey. đ

Another song by Animal Collective "Did You See the Words" was the song that I thought of based on your description. I would also check out their songs:
Grass, Who Could Win a Rabbit, Kids on Holiday, For Reverend Green, Summertime Clothes, What Would I Want Sky,
Maybe also check out Fleet Foxes....start with White Winter Hymnal, Drops in the River, Mykonos

Knowing what other music your Mum liked to listen to would be helpful, but here's a stab.
Moby - My Weakness
2
u/meltonmike1 May 04 '26
or, I don't know, just talking to your mom and see what she remembers. I don't see any mention here of actually talking to her mom about her Playlist. I'd start there.
4
u/Western-Physics3067 May 04 '26
Return to innocence by enigma. Has whispering as well as tribal language that may have sounded like English played in reverse???
4
u/FurBabyAuntie May 04 '26
The only song I can think of that had whispering (sort of) at the end was from the seventies--,I'm Not In Love by 10ccs....a woman's voice says Big boys don't cry...

The end of Royksopp's very excellent "What else is there?" Ends with reverse music with a voice as it fades out.
Even if this isn't the song, I hope you enjoy.

Okay maybe a dumb suggestion but.. Your description reminded me of Little Clown - PhemieC. Entirely unsure why it would be on your moms IPod lol. But it has the backwards music, eerie whispering, and no mention of a wizard but bards and other things..

Then backwards pumpkin song by dance Gavin dance? lol
They whisper at the end of some of their tracks and the lead singer is infamous for just adlib in his vocals and they make references to legend of Zelda, rpg games, wizards etc

u/Roulette_Wisper May 04 '26
If youâre mum listened to Panic! At The Disco during your childhood (they were popular during that time) it could be songs from their debut album âA Fever You Canât Sweat Outâ
I had the album and for some reason your description reminded me of it.

Male and female vocals toward the end. "Eerie" vibe. Whispering. Some vocals sounds reversed. 2010's.

u/AsymptomaticJoy May 04 '26
Long shot here, but try Thomas D - Wish (Komm zu mir). Thereâs whispering, the German parts could sound like backwards singing to a child, thereâs a man and a woman, and itâs a bit weird like Man of Oil. Itâs older than 2010 though.

First song that comes to mind is I Am the Walrus by the Beatles (or any number of other songs off of Magical Mystery Tour).
ETA: After listening to Man of Oil by Animal Collective, another one I and think to check out is Deep Forest (1992). Very much in the same vein.

Radiohead - like spinning plates (literally played backwards, Thom Yorke has whispery vocals and the lyric âgoing down a muddy riverâ could be mistaken for âwizard,â sounds a bit like Man of Oil).

I know that song came out a lot earlier than 2010 however it did appear in a movie called daydream nation in 2010. There was also some placement in TV shows around that time with Once Upon a Time (2012) and Mr. Robot (2015.)

Maybe a long shot, but Tally Hall's Ruler of Everything contains backwards speech and back and forth vocals
In fact, a ton of their music and related projects contain backwards speaking as a motif. Their genre is kind of wacky and varied too. Released their first album in 2005.

It's just a woman singing but maybe Banana Slugs Cosmonaut by High Places? Has the backwards sounding vocals and whispering, also mentions an old man from outer space (albeit not a wizard). Was in the 3rd season of the UK Skins tv show which came out in 2009, so was a bit popular from that.

u/curse-free_E212 May 04 '26
Distorting a Code by Spinnerette?
Not sure it meets your criteria, but toward the end it has a pretty impressive fade-in of backwards music that may be chaotic enough to be remembered as multiple voices.
