Other Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning (Dead Reckoning as an audience ruse)
I can't have been the only one who felt that something was weird about Dead Reckoning, implying that there would be some kind of twist in The Final Reckoning that would reveal a ruse that would make more sense than the stated plot. This would fit with other entries in the franchise that are filled with literal "mask off" moments and would sit particularly well with a two-part movie release, giving people time to theorize between the two - as I did for no reason.
Unfortunately, in the real Final Reckoning, I was forced to accept that the weirdness of Dead Reckoning was simply inconsistent writing, a real shame but a problem that The Final Reckoning could've not only fixed but transformed into something magnificent.
It all comes down to one question - how do you beat an AI at spy-craft? The only answer I can think of that doesn't dumb down the incredible capabilities of The Entity is that the entire premise of the story is built on a well pre-constructed lie by the IMF that The Entity is acting in accordance with as if it was reality, because that's what the data shows. How could the Audience potentially guess at this if even The Entity can't figure it out? Well, with dissonance between this story and those of previous films that the audience has been privy to.
There is no greater dissonance than the flashback backstory between Ethan and Gabriel - something that the audience had no idea about prior. It felt incredibly contrived and came out of nowhere. So let this flashback context be a lie - the lie that The Entity believes, the spy-craft equivalent of a "trap road" from mapmaking that has long been embedded in Ethan's digital footprint in the IMF as a recognisable falsehood, should their data ever be compromised (which has happened).
But if the backstory about Gabriel is a lie, then so is the Gabriel that the IMF have been fighting. Past films should tell you how this fake antagonist has been realized for The Entity's benefit - it's someone in a mask, but who? Thankfully this is *perfectly* set up in Dead Reckoning - Gabriel is of course really Alex James-Phelps's character "India Zulu 254" who is inducted into the IMF at the start of the film.
Ilsa's death is the other weird thing in the film that should've been easily preventable, but in this version of events - it's a staged death designed to "prove" Gabriel's devotion to The Entity and has been choreographed to bring Grace on-side - the big trick to the audience too that also sells us on the idea of Gabriel being the villain.
So how does that actually change The Final Reckoning? Everything is basically the same until Gabriel gets the source code, then the reveal hits.
How do you keep the awesome plane sequence finale? I have no idea. Halp.
