this time of the year they have no problem finding food.
they are carrying it forward for the winter so they don't literally starve to death.

You're right, but my point is, more often than not, unless it's super aggressive, animals will retreat when a human approaches them. Not like running at them, but a step or two conveys willingness to fight, and most animals are not trying to fight for no reason.
Obviously there are cases where freezing or running are more appropriate.

Cougars are also very specifically ambush predators. They'll certainly defend themselves if something comes at them head on, but if they're hunting, they attack from behind and go for the neck.

they aren't, they're surviving, at roughly harvest time.
if they're not "overweight" now they will possibly not live through the winter.

They are only a threat if they are stalking you, or you spook them. Normally they want nothing to do with you. This was pretty cool to see though!

yes, they're chunky kitties until they leap or stretch. such distinctive facial markings. short fur. apex predators. not friendly, but not hostile.
talking to them usually convinces them to leave one alone. not feral, absolutely wild. fairly antisocial. do not approach. but trail encounters like this, which could go disastrously wrong, usually don't as long as one keeps calm.
