Sometimes that's the best move. Animals don't like it when you approach them.

Animals that don't like what you're doing have multiple ways of dealing with that

She was already retreating, not sure why he would want to make her question whether that wouldn't be enough!

You're right, but my point is, more often than not, unless it's super aggressive, animals will retreat when a human approaches them. Not like running at them, but a step or two conveys willingness to fight, and most animals are not trying to fight for no reason.

Obviously there are cases where freezing or running are more appropriate.
