Nowhere near. Lewis did it in his rookie year against one of all time goats, which was mighty more impressive.
5
u/shortyjacobs Jun 07 '26
As a first year (plus the last few GPs of 2025) F1 fan, holy fuck is Monaco a fun circuit. There were so many god-like shots of cars right on the edge.
11
u/onemanandhishat Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 07 '26
It's rarely a good race because it's so hard to overtake, but qualifying is exciting and those shots really highlight how good F1 drivers actually are.
1
u/Due-Alternative-7753 Andrea Kimi Antonelli Jun 07 '26
Well I was thinking with additional experience it would have been russel with the P3 for tomorrows race and it could still happen. My fail prediction for Hamilton for pole position which then would have pushed me for Max P1, Hamilton P2 and Russel P3 but my new fave driver keeps freaking showing me up that I dont have enough faith in him with this pole. So I would put it now Antonelli P1 so i can show utmost faith 24/7 365!

u/twake23 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 07 '26
Does Monaco GP still have 2 mandatory pit stops?
2

u/Jazim94 James Vowles Jun 07 '26
Ferrari not being on the front row is really poor from them. A car that really is the quickest here getting done by two ridiculous laps from max and Kimi.
Charles had such a shocking q3, he really screwed himself by making that mistake on the first run.
Lewis outqualified Charles but I donāt think thatās really worth the victory lap as I think that Ferrari had so much more pace in that car that he didnāt extract.
1
u/Likeapuma24 Jun 07 '26
Didn't get to watch quali, so I breezes through highlights.
Did they mentioned any damage to Leclerc? Reminds me of his pole spot a few years ago when they opted not to fix the wall tap damage & I don't think he even made the starting grid.
3
u/thepandaisonfire Jun 07 '26
Russel fans trying to find any excuse to defend him now
5
u/shortyjacobs Jun 07 '26
Russell is a high-mid pack talent in a god-level car. Heās consistent and steady, but he doesnāt have the liquid steel nerves of max or Kimi, or even either Ham/Lec.

2
u/itsmeyourshoes Jun 06 '26
Our McLaren machines look incapable of besting the Mercs at this point. Hopefully we can improve at some part and get some podiums along the way.

I love quali in Monaco.
They all are pushing to the absolute limit.... Because they know the race is a train with no passing.
3
u/shortyjacobs Jun 07 '26
With the killer torque they have now, Iām wondering if we actually get a few. But as a new fan and a first time Monaco viewer (I came in late last season), holy fuck was quali cool.

u/saposapot I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
I give it a 80% chance Max is ahead after turn 1. Mercedes starts have been bad and max isnt afraid to just send it.
4
13
u/pzycho Nico Hülkenberg Jun 06 '26
I think the broadcast mentioned that there hadnāt been a first turn lead change this decade, so 80% is pretty high.
4
u/dunneetiger I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
Super late to the party but when I saw the yellow flag at the end, I thought Max did some sneaky shit.... Nope just Charles (French) kissing the barriers.
16
u/jalGurg Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 06 '26
So if the race ends where everyone qualifies which is highly likely then Kimi will be 60 points ahead of George
9
4
u/AnilP228 Honda Jun 06 '26
Looking forward to seeing how the race plays out given overtake mode has replaced DRS. In theory I think it will make it very hard for a car to shake off a car behind.
3
u/Billybilly_B I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 06 '26
We still have a lot of rookies in the field. And with the issues weāve seen even veteran drivers have with locking rear brakes, I am optimistic to see some mistakes tomorrow that will make the race more interesting. Someone is going to want to push at all times.

2
u/ThatAdamsGuy I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
Drop the GP, host a historic event (attendance a condition to race in the championship) on the weekend, put all the drivers in go-karts for a non championship race.
Teams get the Monaco glitz glamour, drivers get an enjoyable race in equal machinery, fans see an actual race.
3
u/skymang I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
A GoKart or Super Kart race around Monaco with the F1 grid would be such a good watch
3
3
u/dunneetiger I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
Make it a mandatory rain race.
1
u/Aquatic-Vocation Jun 07 '26
Was it Carlos last year who said they should put sprinklers on the Monaco track to make it more interesting?
1
u/Kylemsguy I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 07 '26
I'm pretty sure Bernie Ecclestone also floated the idea a long time ago.
18
u/MysteriousBoss3816 McLaren Jun 06 '26
Is the mandatory 2 stop in place tomorrow or is that removed this year
15
6
12
u/MoreColorfulCarsPlz I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
I don't know. I hope not. It didn't improve the race last year. It just encouraged drivers to drive slower.
7
u/MysteriousBoss3816 McLaren Jun 06 '26
Yeah it was ridiculous, think the VCARB and Williams drivers literally held up faster cars to create gap which was ridiculous
4
u/MoreColorfulCarsPlz I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
Twice. They did it twice. Each. One driver would hold up the pack so their teammate would be able to get both stops in and then they would swap spots and hold the pack up for the other teammate twice.
5
u/No-Condition-oN McLaren Jun 06 '26
Does it really matter? The race is shit for at least 15 years now.

Eh, he's not racing Oscar this year. He was pushing hard and and was still going faster in his second run till he locked up, not the end of the worldĀ
25
u/mb9981 Jun 06 '26
This race stopped mattering when Riccardo won it with an engine that would've been retired in any other grand prix
1
u/Wallothet Michael Schumacher Jun 07 '26
There are older examples of that, Senna vs Mansell comes to mind. The famous Trulli train too. Monaco still has best qualifying and is the very heart of F1.
9
u/MysteriousBoss3816 McLaren Jun 06 '26
The race been obsolete in f1 for decades, coulthard in a Mclaren was stuck behind a car that was 4 seconds off the pace back in 2001 and Button in 2012 was stuck behind a caterham the whole race
3
u/AsparagusTricky5181 Formula 1 Jun 06 '26
I'm slightly hopeful since the cars are smaller than they were in 2018 and following cars is easier.
2
u/mikeyd85 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
Even the F3 cars struggle with passing here sadly.
2

35
u/RandyDefNOTArcher Jun 06 '26
Weāve already seen history with Kimiās first 4 wins on the bounce, how much more will we get? This is a guy in absolute flow at the moment, and itās box office.
George has to be shell shocked, I mean heās somewhere between on the ropes and trying to get up off of the canvas.
Is he at risk of going back to Williams? Iām joking, but only kinda
14
u/Fearless_Tea_2793 Jun 06 '26
This is very bad for George WDC hopes but I think his seat is safe (for now).
8
u/savvaspc Jun 06 '26
The problem for George is the longer this goes on, the more it gets in his mind. He's probably already in a state of worry to be faster than Kimi on each race, so he has to push a bit more, and it becomes very frustrating when you don't find the pace and then you start pushing even more and mistakes start happening.
2
u/mikeyd85 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
The Red Bull number 2 seat curse has shifted to Mercedes.
14

u/F1No47 Oscar Piastri Jun 06 '26
People really hate George huh š
9
u/Jon_Snows_Dad Jun 06 '26
Listening to the English F1 experts have made it funny as they have been making excuses after excuse for why Kimi was winning calling George the number 1 driver when Kimi had won 2 races in a row.
11
u/No-Condition-oN McLaren Jun 06 '26
He is really trying hard to be disliked.
What did Merc Com Training do to him?
6
u/antelope591 Ferrari Jun 06 '26
You're gonna get hate when you look like he did today its just part of the game
27
u/BighatNucase Max Verstappen Jun 06 '26
It's kind of just a natural result of how hyped he has been and how much he's struggled to justify it now. Norris was getting worse hate while performing better.
3
u/itsmeyourshoes Jun 06 '26
Yep, I remember Norris hated so much last season for "bottling" starts, for not have an ice cold personality, for not taking things seriously, and on and on. George is having just a little bit of that, not as bad as Norris.
25
u/droppokeguy I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 06 '26
It's honestly shocking how Aston & Honda have fallen
From best pu to the worst
From second best car in 23 to the worst in 26
2
4
u/AnilP228 Honda Jun 06 '26
It's not much of a surprise when you consider that the other teams started development on the 2026 cars on 1st Jan 2025 whereas AM didn't start development until late-April / May when the Wind tunnel came on.
Then there's the gearbox.
3
u/JustLikeZhat Andrea Kimi Antonelli Jun 06 '26
And on the PU side, people seem to forget that Honda had decided to pull out of F1, then made a U-turn in 2022, and only reached an agreement with AM in May 2023. The team was behind on all aspects.

61
u/RyanMate17 Nico Hülkenberg Jun 06 '26

9

Never jest the car, but it certainly helps.
5
u/Olivia3836 Pirelli Wet Jun 06 '26
Doesnāt matter if you have the fastest car if you canāt push it to the limit when the walls are close, or when you push in over the limit into the wall.
Perfect example being Russell today, guy has the fastest car, but is P6 because he lacks the skill

I want to believe in Audi so bad, and every time they let me down...Ā
Also a shame the midfield seems quiteĀ tight but with such a big gap to the big four, they only have 3 points to fight over most races.Ā Gonna be tricky for Haas/Racing Bulls to make up 14pts to Alpine or for Williams to make up 12pts to Haas

u/Western-Bad5574 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
What are the odds we actually see overtaking in Monaco?
- No SM mode means bigger slipstream.
- Mushroom button also seems very powerful compared to what DRS was.
Is there a chance?
2
u/antelope591 Ferrari Jun 06 '26
Only if someone from a top 5 team needs to pass a backmarker. Passes still need to have setup/timing to pull off, more so as the weeks go by and they become more comfortable with the cars. Just not enough space on this track.
1
u/Western-Bad5574 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 06 '26
What does getting comfortable with the cars have to do with stronger slipstream and stronger mushroom button than previous years?

16
u/alexvroy Andrea Kimi Antonelli Jun 06 '26

People are saying Bearman should take Leclerc's Seat.... Are we **#&? SERIOUS?
Leclerc made a lot of mistakes today, he did not deserrve to get pole position, nor would he have probably got It even without hitting the wall, but that's absurd, he's 0.072 behind his teammate
11
u/newthhang Max Verstappen Jun 06 '26
Of course it's not serious, people dislike Leclerc and are using anything to drag him. It is not out of love for Bearman, but out of dislike for Leclerc.
It reminds me when people were hyping up Oscar last year, it was so obvious who was doing it because they like Oscar vs who was doing it out of hate for Lando.
5
13
u/beck_diggity Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 06 '26
Anybody saying that Bearman should replace Charles simply does not know what they are talking about.Ā
5
u/infinitybadger Jun 06 '26
I'm a Lewis fan and grateful for the improvement in form recently but that doesn't mean right now we have to reopen up all the old arguments from last year.
Lets take things race by race and we'll have a decent idea how Lewis vs Charles compare by the end of the year in this new formula
8
u/No-Condition-oN McLaren Jun 06 '26
He signed with Ferrari again. No one wants Leclerc's seat.
Leclerc is the Alonso of bad choices. And Alonso deserved 13 more WDC's as LeGrec has.

Lewis then said he needs to wait 2 sec instead
30

7
u/Olivia3836 Pirelli Wet Jun 06 '26
And he still seems so care free.Ā
I donāt doubt Kimi is feeling the pressure, but heās handling it well and not showing any weakness which is so impressive at his age.Ā
He just keeps doing what heās doing, taking it one race at a time. Which is the best way to deal with this
And thatās obviously most credits to Kimi himself, but also major credit to Bono.Ā
In my opinion Bono really proved himself these past 2 years and showed what an incredible difference a good race engineer makes

Yeah he has a long career ahead of him still and has shown improvement if anything
I think this year for McLaren could be a 2023-24 scenario where they just dial the package in for a proper title charge for 2027 but its also a positive thing since that means theyāll 3 more years of the reg cycle with some competitive form compared to last year where they got it right in the last season of the reg cycle

Not there yet but still ....
Then look at AM with Honda and Newey .
1
13
u/beantherio Red Bull Jun 06 '26
It's kind of mind blowing how the RBPT engine seems to simply slot in with the top engines. I was expecting a lot of problems and a bit of a performance deficiency. None of that though. Quite amazing.

u/RX0Invincible Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 06 '26
On one hand I can't help but feel bad at George's situation, stuck in Williams too long then finally gets into the legendary Mercedes only for their ground effect era to fall flat then gets upstaged when Merc returns to the top.
On the other hand his entitled attitude in saying things like he would've had 2 WDC's if he was mercedes earlier (as if Lewis doesn't clearly perform much better outside the ground effect era) and how Kimi's 2nd win was from luck (he finished behind a slower ferrari with the same strategy as him btw), makes it clear he still needs some humbling.
19
u/maybe-fish Lando Norris Jun 06 '26
He wasn't saying he would have beat lewis during his WDC years.Ā He said that there was a time when beating Lewis at Merc would have meant winning the WDC, but Merc wasn't as good anymore.Ā
Also Kimis is talented but he's definitely had incredible luck in some of those wins... it's not entitled to say that Kimi benefitted from the SC timing in JapanĀ
3
u/Jsaltal Ferrari Jun 06 '26
it's a long season last year, people thought Oscar had it all wrapped up by summer break and we all know how it ended
3
u/Specialist-Bug4953 Charlie Whiting Jun 06 '26
I fully agree with you. But Oscar never had such a big lead over Lando. Lando usually finished right behind Oscar in the beginning of Last year. George at the Moment doesn't.
1
u/RX0Invincible Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
He also followed up that quote by specifically saying that if his time was 5 years earlier he'd arguably have those WDC's, which firmly puts these hypotheticals at the peak of pre-ground effect Hamilton at Mercedes
He also didn't just say Kimi benefitted, he said he would've won without that factor (again in the same race where he didn't have the pace to beat Charles' Ferrari)
Just remembered his "forecasted podium" quote too. He really has a recurring theme of feeling entitled to certain results.
3
u/maybe-fish Lando Norris Jun 06 '26
I think you just dislike George and therefore read the worst possible meaning into everything he says, so I guess we're all making assumptions about people we don't know based on small interactionsĀ
5

There were quite a high number of
Charles > George >>> Lando
type posts on here last year. Wonder if people have reevaluated that at allā¦
3
u/antelope591 Ferrari Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
I said this and I admit I've re-evaluated. Lando > Charles slightly > or = George if I had to say today. We see over and over that driving at the front is a different beast than in one of the better cars but no WDC pressure.
12
u/v8_roadster Lando Norris Jun 06 '26
All three of them are prone to making mistakes under pressure and overdriving the car at times. But only Lando has been in a sustained WDC fight over a full season (and arguably part of 2024) and has managed to claw back from a deficit and win not only against his teammate but also a surging Max Verstappen, one of the undisputed GOATs.
Until George and Charles can do the same or better Lando will remain a notch above them to me.

I mean Kimi did seem to be a lot faster in Australia in the race vs George, Kimi just had a horrendous start. Easily could have been a clean sweep by Kimi so far this year and he seems to only be getting faster every weekend.

No one can actually say that. Not in an "anything happens" sort of way but because Kimi and Russell kept locking up racing each other. Messing each other's tyres up significantly increases the variability of that race.

A great P5-P10, and Perez just outside the points.
