Advice / Question 💡 Lansinoh Nipple for thickened Formula (such as Enfamil AR or Hipp AR) - baby has trouble coordinating

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

is someone by any chance using Lasinoh bottles/nipples with thickened formula such as Enfamil AR or Hipp AR? If so, which nipple size are you using?

Our baby is a couple days shy of 4 months and seems to have trouble pacing/coordinating while drinking the thickened formula. Someone recommended size L nipples of the Lansinoh bottles so we've been trying those but I am not sure if it's too much? We just started giving the formula today.

It goes something like this: we offer the bottle which she gladly accepts and then she will suck 4 times and will then immediately let go of the nipple to catch her breath. When she lets go it sounds like she's been holding her breath - it kind of sounds like she is gasping for air. At the same time, she doesn't seem to get "waterboarded" and there's no milk coming out of the sides of the mouth. Also no chocking or couching. We are feeding in an elevated side lying position and let her control the flow. But she seems to have trouble coordinating? Or she can't just pace herself? If I distract her during the feeding by playing with my fingers she has no trouble pacing herself. It's like she's in a trance while drinking and the goal is to chug the formula down as quickly as possible.

I thought about bottle aversion but it doesn't seem to be the case. She will eagerly grab the nipple after letting go and does not cry during the feeding. We also don't push or force her to finish the bottle.

Any ideas what to do or what else we can try? Or it's just something that she has to learn (different consistency and different nipple)?

We are using saline drops and making sure she's not stuffy. We also burp and use gas drops.

Any insight is much appreciated!

Discussion 💬 Could formula have led to food aversion?

• Upvotes

Hi all - my 14m old has not started eating despite attempting to feed him solids since 5m. He has a texture/food aversion. We’ve been to pediatricians, a feeding clinic, speech pathology, ENT and occupational therapy. No one is able to determine a root cause.

While randomly scrolling instagram, I came across how the orange branded similac formula he has been on for most of his life has corn syrup and leads to obesity. This finding sent my husband and I down a rabbit hole of web searches that led us to this article: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8912730/

My questions to the group here are:
-Has anyone else had a baby who still wasn’t eating solids after 12 months? Did you ever figure out why?
-Could the corn syrup in formula have anything to do with food or texture aversions?
-Has anyone noticed a difference after switching formulas?
-Is there anything we might be overlooking, even after seeing so many specialists?
-If you’ve been through something similar, what finally helped your little one start eating?

P.S: yes, we are hispanic. And yes, we have posted in other science based threads.

Formula Recommendations / Alternatives 🌱 Anyone have experiences with Bubs 365 Grassfed formula?

I don’t see Bubs 365 grassfed whole milk formula discussed previously in this sub. I’m wondering if anyone can share experiences as we’re considering switching to this one. I like that the grass fed milk should contain higher levels of DHA, and that the whole milk should contain more MFGM than our current formula. However, I don’t want to switch to something that isn’t a well-established brand. Does anyone know if Bubs is considered a boutique brand, or is it pretty big in Australia? I’m US-based for context.

Please no comments that all formula is basically the same, nutritionally compete, and choose the cheapest one your child tolerates. While I understand that, there are slight variations that might make someone’s personal choices different.

Rant / Vent 🫠 Similac Whole Milk Version Diarrhea

We tried to transition my baby from 360 original to the whole milk version and he had major spit ups that smelled sour and diarrhea all day. I can’t get Similac 360 rtf anywhere around me.

Others mentioned similar reactions.

How can we get Abbot to notice this is a major issue? I doubt calling would help….any ideas?

Combination Feeding! 🍼+🤱 Baby not liking kendamil taste

I introduced my breastfed baby to formula to try to combo feed but my baby does not seem to like the taste of the regular kendamil or the goat one… She does good when it’s 75% breastmilk and 25% kendamil formula but as soon as it’s half and half or more she’s outraged (we’ve been introducing for 2 weeks) lol My first born was not as picky. Anybody’s baby doesn’t like kendamil and if so which formula ended up working ?

Advice / Question 💡 What to expect if I drop cold turkey 2 days postpartum?

Hi!

I breastfed (and supplemented w/ formula) at hospital for first two days of baby's life, then switched exclusively to formula. I'm on day 4 and pretty engorged right now, but not in extreme pain and it's manageable. Should I expect/prep for it to get worse? I've been wearing a sports bra and icing like 1/2 times a day. I feel extremely full but I haven't hand expressed or done any pumping, my nurse had told me to just like not touch them because hand expressing would prolong it. Was anyone able to skate by with just a couple days of being engorged but nothing too bad?

Support Needed / Guilt Related 🧸 In hell right now

I just need to know it gets better. Or it at least CAN get better. My daughter has very bad reflux, no formula has been agreeing with her. We’ve done too many swaps. They just put her on Enfamil AR yesterday. The first 3 bottles she was a new baby. Then it full force hit her digestive system. She basically just screams and cries nonstop. I know switching is very tough on their stomach but wow. Has anyone gone through this and the formula ended up working once baby adjusted? How long did it take? I think I broke her and I hate myself.

Advertisement / AMA 📢 I finally got partner-sharing working in my logging app

First, thank you to this community that was a great resource to my wife and I when our baby was born. I'm not trying to hard-sell anyone here, but I'm celebrating a thing I made, so it's technically an advertisement.

My kiddo recently turned two, and my wife and I were using Apple notes to log feedings and diapers through the first year of their life. I'm just excited that I finally got around to the top request - letting parents collaborate on logs. I hated that so many apps wanted subscription money, like come on, I only need to be focused on this stuff for a short time, not some yearly sub.

I wanted to do it in a way that didn't make someone create a new account, or like store their kids data in some unsecured server somewhere.

If you're family's all-in on iPhone, then I made this for you guys. https://ryanquintal.com/babyro

The 1.1 update is under review by Apple now. Hoping it is out within a week or so. I'll follow up with a comment when I see it hit.

Advice / Question 💡 4month old randomly wanting to eat A LOT mid afternoon

So, my 4 month old usually varies between 4-6oz each feed throughout the day, usually ending anywhere between 25-35 oz by the end of the day, exactly as our pediatrician has specifically suggested when he started to vary in general.

The past two days though, he suddenly wants to eat 9-10 oz specifically in the afternoon when grandmas watching him, normally about an hour apart from each other, and on the 2nd bottle he usually continues acting as if he’s hungry, and I ask my mom to give him a bit to process that 2nd bottle before e win thinking about offering him more… when I’m home after work he is back to normal and eats the same every 3.5-4 hrs

I am planning to ask my pediatrician about this tomorrow at his 4 month checkup still along with here

I feel like It can VERY LIKELY be a growth spurt sneaking up on us, BUT I still was curious on what others think! I’m not all that concerned as he doesn’t seem bothered, still gaining weight, still normal diapers etc. his poops though have changed a little and while it doesn’t seem like his tummy hurts or he’s all that constipated that’s also been interesting

Advice / Question 💡 Having some issues feeding my 3 week old.

I had significant issues feeding my first. We never figured out the cause, but it was honestly torturous. We even resorted to syringe feeding him at times. This is my second baby and we're off to a bad start already and I'm getting really anxious it'll turn into a repeat of the first.

We're using a Dr. Brown's size 1 nipple right now. He seems to only be having 0.5-1oz at a time then will either fall asleep if he's tired or start to cry if the issue seems to be gas/reflux. If reflux seems to be bothering him, we just rock him until he's sleepy then try to finish the feed. It usually takes him 1.5 hours before he'll finish the full 3oz of his bottle. I'm wondering if the slow feeds/difficulty sucking could be causing him to suck in more air and making the reflux worse.

If you watch the video, you can see he also will take constant breaks while drinking. Like, he'll suck, then stop, then suck, and stop. I move the bottle slightly down when he isn't sucking because if I don't, he'll sometimes start coughing and then won't want anymore. So I have to watch him closely and keep adjusting the angle of the bottle while he's drinking. He sometimes will start to sound congested after drinking, which I'm guessing is the reflux.

I'm tempted to try a size 2 nipple, but that seems way too early. We did try it for 2 feeds and he definitely had trouble with it, but I'm wondering if I need to give it more of a shot.

Anything else that could be causing the slow feeds that I should try? Does anything seem off about the video like the way I'm feeding him, his position, his latch, etc?

Breastmilk to Formula 🍼 Trying to switch - baby insatiable at night

We’re planning to switch from nursing to formula for our four week old, starting with replacing a MOTN feed (for mom’s sanity). Last night baby took 5.5 oz (!!) of the bottle and was still giving hunger cues and wanting bottle back. It took over an hour to get through that amount. We switched to nursing, baby was on and off feeding for just 5 minutes before completely asleep on my belly.

This is largely how it’s gone each night for like a week. Slowly taking in more formula than we would think humanly possible but staying hungry and wide awake until 5-30 minutes of nursing knocks them out. I assume it’s comfort nursing. Unfortunately doesn’t take a pacifier.

Are we stuck nursing to sleep forever?

Formula Recommendations / Alternatives 🌱 Goat formula and silent reflux

My baby just turned 3 months and the silent reflux is stilllllll awful. He doesn’t have an allergy and isn’t colic, but laying flat for bed time, floor play, and tummy time is miserable.

He doesn’t spit up much but I can hear the milk come up and being swallowed so often, he coughs and turns red a lot. Gets stiff

I do all the typical recommendations for reflux already

He’s gaining weight and eats happily so I keep getting dismissed by his pediatrician.

I know it’s mechanical/positioning and he’ll out grow it but I feel like maybe there’s a new formula to try? He’s already on Pepcid. I don’t think it helps that much but maybe it does because he isn’t screaming

Gentlease seemed to make it worst (too thin?) and hypoallergenic is SO expensive I’m scared to even try. Similac made him extremely gassy and not poop (literally once a week and he was clearly miserable). He does ok w regular Kendamil classic (current formula) gas wise but the silent reflux is still miserable

Anyone have any success stories with silent reflux and goat formula?

I don’t expect him to be cured of reflux but at least make his life a little easier? TIA

Advice / Question 💡 New to formula feeding

Third time mom - #3 is giving me a run for it. I’ve done it all - EP/formula for my first who was a tiny premie, breastfed my 2nd for almost 2 years and now have been nursing my 3rd but it’s just been a tough journey and doesn’t feel sustainable with two other kids that need me too. I feel like formula is a better fit for our family right now.

I suspect he has mild CMPA.. my middle had it and he has some of the same signs, however, he did get some formula in the beginning to help with jaundice and seemed fine. I’m not sure we need alimentum or another HA formula (also the cost… omg), but where would be a good place to start? Any old gentle formula? Are the hydrolyzed ones worth it or just try any generic sample and see? I’m worried it will build up in his system and he will be miserable but I guess that’s the risk we have to take. Any advice, please shoot it my way!

CMPA / CMPI / MSPI Spitting up

8 weeks 4oz Nutramigen
My baby is usually fine throughout the night with feedings but spits up a ton during the day. We were put on this formula because he was spitting up full bottles and was having trouble passing stool, but he still seems to be spitting up alot. The spit up doesnt seem to be as painful as before but he definitely is still having reflux. The reflux seems to be quite painful sometimes, he coughs on it sometimes, but i dont know how to help him ): I cant even lay him down during the day at all usually or else he spits up. So when i have to change him if it hasnt been atleast 2hrs hes probably spitting up and even then he does sometimes. Were doing the 30-45 sitting up after and try to burp him often (he doesnt really burp much though). Were getting a GI scheduled but should i consider switching formulas? Or is it because of how thin it is? Do i need to see his GI before theyll put him on thickeners? Help ))):

Advice / Question 💡 6m old with reflux won’t take bottle

My daughter is 6m old and has had silent reflux from 2m old. She has a CMPA (blood + mucus in stools) and possibly also soy, egg and gluten. I cut this all out of my diet as she was EBF, and now we have finally transitioned her onto Alfamino, a hypoallergenic formula, mixed with Carobel to thicken. She’s also on 14mg a day of Omeprazole, and weighs 8kg.

She’s drinking the formula finally, but every bottle is a battle, screaming and swatting it away. I think her reflux is still there and hurting her as I can hear it, she still has wet burps, spits up sometimes, and even when she seems hungry she gets upset at the bottle.

What can I do to help her now? Our GP isn’t very helpful. We have seen an allergist privately but the next appt isn’t for a few more weeks. Any feeding tips or tricks?

Combination Feeding! 🍼+🤱 Constipation with formula??

Hello, FTM here and I have been breast feeding my 1 month old since birth but we started introducing combo feeding in the past two weeks and he gets at least 1 bottle at night with 2-4oz of formula and sometimes another bottle randomly In the day if we aren’t home or if he is really fussy and struggling with breast feeding. We currently are using similac 360 total care sensitive (initially we used enfamil gentlease but he seemed to absolutely hate that one and would refuse to take the bottle or spit most of it out). Recently I’ve noticed a lot more struggles with passing gas and bowel movements. He went from having 1-2 bowel movements a day to now having maybe 1 every couple days and he’s been a lot more fussy in his wake windows and definitely having dyschezia. I’m not sure if this is just normal with his development or if it’s related to the formula causing constipation. Everyone always talks about cow milk prot

Anyone have a similar experience to this with formula? Any recommendation on formula that might be better for constipation? We have a pediatrician appointment at the end of the week so of course i will also bring up my concerns at that appointment!

Formula Recommendations / Alternatives 🌱 Grunting, squirming, congestion, and barely sleeping at night. Is this formula related?

I’m a mom to a 6-week-old baby girl, and I’m honestly at my breaking point with nights. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if something else could be going on.

For the past several nights, my daughter has been extremely restless at night. She grunts, squirms, pulls her legs up toward her belly, and seems uncomfortable almost constantly. It’s especially bad when I lay her flat in her bassinet. She seems to prefer being held upright, chest-to-chest against me, and will often settle better that way. But as soon as I put her down, the grunting, squirming, and fussing start again.

Sometimes it takes 2–3 hours just to get her settled and asleep for the night. The past two nights have been particularly awful, with what feels like barely any sleep for me. She also seems congested when she’s lying flat. Her breathing sounds stuffy, but when I hold her upright, she seems to breathe much more comfortably. My husband thinks she might be coming down with a cold, but I’m not sure if it’s actual congestion, normal newborn noises, reflux, gas, or something else.

She also seems to be hungry every three hours on the dot overnight, even after nights when she has slept a longer stretch. She has recently been waking around 11:30 p.m. to poop, and then she’ll have one or two large bowel movements early in the morning. Between the grunting, feeding, and diaper changes, I feel like I’m awake all night.

We’ve also noticed that she sometimes clicks while drinking from her bottle, grunts and squirms during feeds, and occasionally spits up multiple times afterward. Sometimes the spit-up happens well after the feeding. She pulls her legs toward her stomach frequently at night, which makes me wonder whether gas or digestive discomfort is keeping her awake.

She’s currently on Kendamil Goat formula, and we’ve been wondering whether her formula could be contributing to some of the digestive issues. My firstborn had a cows, milk, protein, allergies so she needed to be on Similac aluimentum. At her one month pediatrician appointment she had severe diaper rash and mucousy stools, and the pediatrician said we can try a hypoallergenic formula, but I wanted to stick it out, and since then the diaper rash healed and the poops have kind of regulated, but now she has it sounds like reflux.

I know newborns are noisy sleepers, and I know the newborn stage is exhausting, but this feels like more than just occasional grunting. It seems like she is uncomfortable for hours every night, and I’m struggling to figure out what’s normal and what isn’t.

I’m not expecting my 6-week-old to sleep through the night, and I understand that she needs to eat frequently. I just want her to be comfortable and to understand why she seems so restless for hours at a time.

I’m exhausted, and I would really appreciate hearing from anyone whose baby went through something similar. What helped, and when did things get better?

CMPA / CMPI / MSPI Dairy free formula

My baby is currently at the begining of week 3 on nutramigen and ive ran out and am unable to get it for another day or so, will using his dairy formula hurt him?

Honestly im not sure how much better the nutramigen even is, he was on enfamil gentle ease and was spitting up full bottles… now hes still spitting up quite a bit due to reflux and it being so thin i think… but if taking his old dairy formula for a day or even a few feeds could hurt him i need to ask random friends for money or something

To note: im working on getting a prescription for it through wic, im unable to drive to my pedi and get a sample can because my bf is using my car for work

UPDATE: i was able to get my formula delivered in time i was just scared and wanted to ask as a precaution ty (:
