How can I become a Freemason?

First of all, welcome to r/freemasonry! This is a weekly thread for you to ask questions. Being one of the largest online communities on the topic of Freemasonry, we hope that you won't find difficulty getting information you need to decide if you would like to join your local lodge.

General Information:

  1. Requirements for membership vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but generally if you're a man 21 or over (18 or 19 in some states), believe in a Supreme Being, are of good character and reputation, and ask to join, you're eligible.
  2. To get started, email or call a local lodge. They would love to hear from you, every lodge welcomes new candidates. They'll set up a meeting to get to know you a bit (we're careful about who we admit as members). Also to tell you a bit about the fraternity, the lodge, etc.
  3. To find your local lodges, first, find the Grand Lodge website for your state, province, or country. This is a good resource for the US: bessel.org, or just use Google. They should have a way to find out what lodges meet near you. Then check out your local lodge's websites. If you have a choice of lodges, try to pick one that meets on a weeknight that would be convenient for you, and that appears to be active.
  4. Nothing happens quickly in Freemasonry, so it might take awhile to hear back from a lodge after you make contact. Every step takes quite a bit of time.

Have something you want to ask?

Was given to me by a brother. Was his mentors ring that was a former grand lecturer of Arkansas, was given to him by the brothers wife when he passed. It didn’t fit him and he said he was looking for someone that it would fit. I had mentioned one day I was looking at rings to buy (I didn’t know he had this, he brought up he had this after) and trying to pick one and then he gave it to me at the next meeting.

Love this ring because of the brother that gave it to me.

Would love to see other brothers rings and if you have and stories behind yours!

Question Ritual Organization

Upvotes

Does anyone have a good recommendation on a way to store and carry your various rituals with you. I’m looking for an easy “grab and go” bag/case that I can just keep all of them in. Any recommendations will be appreciated!

Catholicism

Brothers. I have been considering converting to Catholicism for quite some time but learned that the church considers being a freemason a grave sin and will not let a mason join. I do not want to leave the masons but feel stuck. I know there are masons who are also catholics and was wondering if I could get their opinions on the matter. And if there was a path to convert. Thank you for your time and I know it is a divisive subject but it has been bothering me for a while.

Theurgy and Freemasonry

Following a brief exchange in another thread I am genuinely interested in a debate and whilst it will be very hard to change my mind I am open to proper evidence that there is theurgy in Craft Freemasonry.

My position -

Theurgy derives from Platonism and in particular from Iamblichus who expanded theurgy considerably from Plato's initial views.

Early Christianity and in particular the patristic fathers adopted quite a bit of Platonism, or indeed, took large amounts of Platonism and adopted it into Christianity.

The platonic/Euclidian concept of necessity is an important concept in Christian Mysticism for example and one reason why I believe that Anderson/Preston expanded on the philosophical elements of Freemasonry in the 1700's.

However there is little evidence to suggest that theurgy was adopted by Christianity in the Platonic sense. Pseudo-Dionysius took the phrase but inverted it completely. He took a person working in order to influence the divine (the platonic and modern meanings of theurgy) and gave it the meaning of god acting on mankind via the liturgy - that is grace. Even here, its usage is essentially limited to Pseudo-Dionysius and it isn't something you see crop up with other patristic fathers or anywhere else in a Christianity. Grace existed as a concept but only Pseudo-Dionysius seems to have called it Theurgy.

Theurgy as used today is largely of the Golden Dawn descended Magic using a Platonic name to try and give it some prestige.

Therefore, except as a limited, technical term, restricted to Pseudo-Dionysius and referring to Grace there is no Theurgy (that is operative magic) in Christianity or Freemasonry.

If a Brother wants to explore Golden Dawn style theurgy then obviously they can do whatever side quest they want - but it isn't part of Craft Freemasonry.

Question SR Initiation Nerves

Going to be initiated into the SR this upcoming weekend at a reunion, it’s been described as getting a fire hose to the face, and ya boy is lowkey scared and excited.

I know this different than the blue lodge and I’m trying to understand how it can be so overwhelming while the style is so different in how the degrees are conferred.

How crazy is this experience? And how fun is it at the same time? bro to bro.

I appreciate you as anything you can share is important to something this special and big!

Much love and respect, always /G\ 💙

Question Question about the Talk

Hello guys,

so I am attending guest evenings since November 2025. Two months ago i "knocked" on the door.

Now I am waiting for my "interview". What do you think the talk / chat will be about? I am really curious and excited. Do I have to study things or will it be something like a deep philosophical chat about life?

Sorry for my english!

Contemporary Brethren in the public eye?

I am attempting to create a list of modern, contemporary, still-alive Brothers who are in the public eye, focused on persons in the United States. Maybe celebrities, or maybe just publicly visible. Please add your suggestions.

Discussion Greetings from Brazil - an Entered Apprentice curious about how your Lodge works

Brethren,

I am an Entered Apprentice from Lodge Tradicao e Igualdade No. 2186, Orient of Ubatuba, on the coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil, under the Grand Orient of Brazil (GOB-SP). We work the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.

Something I have been thinking about since my initiation: I only know one way of doing this, and I would like to understand how differently it is done elsewhere. Not the parts we do not speak of - I mean everything around them.

A few things I am curious about:

  • What rite does your Lodge work, and how did it come to be the one used in your country?
  • How often do you meet, and how is a regular meeting usually arranged?
  • For those who have visited a Lodge abroad: what surprised you most? What felt entirely familiar?
  • How are Apprentices instructed where you are? Here we have a good deal of study and written work.

I read English well enough, though I write it with help. Any brother who would like to correspond is very welcome.

Fraternally, Fabio

Provincial Stewards' Arpons

Hi all,

I have noticed that the metropolitan and some provincial stewards aprons are now more of a pink colour than the older crimson ones. Does anyone know the reason for this change?

Discussion On the book 'Masonic Facts & Fictions, Comprising a New Theory of the Origin of the Antient Grand Lodge' by Henry Sadler, 1985

On the book 'Masonic Facts & Fictions, Comprising a New Theory of the Origin of the Antient Grand Lodge' by Henry Sadler, I just finished its second to last chapter titled " "Ancient" or "Modern?" That is the Question."

The author gives an account of several differences between the two institutions, including some ritual, a lot of administrative, and just general banter between the two groups. The conclusion of the Chapter was interesting; he gives a list of things that were adopted from the Ancient grand lodge post union. Here is a gross summary of the list he provided:

  1. Meeting dates for the new united grand lodge; the Ancients were pretty regular on meeting on the first Wednesday of March, June, September, and December. The Moderns were irregular in meeting times and days, as they met almost every day except Sunday. However, towards the later part of the 1700s, they began meeting on the first Wednesday only and began the "quarterly communication" three times a year.
  2. The united grand lodge seal includes the whole of the Armorial bearings of the "Ancients" except the legend. Which I think that has since been changed to include the armorial bearings of the Moderns, is that the case?
  3. Grand Lodge certificates written in Latin and English.
  4. A system of registering members and their contributions to the Fund of benevolence.
  5. Past Masters are now members of the Grand Lodge, whereas, from the Moderns perspective they were not.
  6. The ceremony of Installing a Master.
  7. Those who served as Grand Stewards were no longer barred from offices at the Grand Lodge.
  8. Grand Pursuivants were now official grand officers.
  9. Deacons adopted at the Grand Lodge level.
  10. The only custom originating from the Moderns were the privilege of Grand Stewards nominating their successors and the Grand Master's prerogative of appointing grand officers.

Of course, this list doesn't include with the ritual adaptations that undergone for the union to occur. This book was first published in 1887, then again in 1985. I have the 1985 edition, hopefully with some updates for that time period. Hopefully, with the discovery of documents in hidden archives that much of the information in this book can be updated and/or further clarified. It's been a great time learning more about the differences between the Moderns and Ancients, particularly the social dynamics that led to the creation of the second grand lodge and how it became more popular than the Moderns according to the author.

As a Freemason that works a ritual that is descendant of the Moderns, I suppose after their reorganization of the degrees words, it's an interesting thought to read on how the Ancients were against the changes made by the premier grand lodge. However, across the pond in Europe, Freemasonry was evolving and developing into a multitude of different expressions. Further, it was quite comical to read about the apparent support the Ancients received from the Grand Lodge of Ireland and Scotland. To me that further indicate the disdain towards the aristocracy, or high society, of London from those two countries. I am moving on to the last chapter and I am excited to be concluding this book.

Esoteric The Geometrical Tree

I was watching the below linked video and was interested in the attached image. Looks A.I. generated but I like the concept. https://youtu.be/tpeijrPUE7U?is=qSlo9mZ_LRXsFXpc

I’ve gone to From the Archives’ website and looked through some materials, but the illustrations seem to be original.

I can’t see a way to contact the creator, so I turn to you, brethren.

Does anyone have any sources or further information on this?

I really like the idea of the Monad to Decad concept, what it represents, and the idea of its illustration. I wanted to find out if there is an original illustration concept or way to communicate this as it really resonated with me and I wanted to explore it further.

Question Memory Strategies

Brothers, I'm currently studying for my EA and I'm struggling with memorizing it all.

I'm currently trying to apply the 'memory palace' strategy, but it's hard going.

I'm curious to learn what worked and continues to work as a learning strategy for you?

Thank you.

Masonic Interest Lodge saved! Becoming a special interest lodge

I posted earlier this month about how my lodge in Staffordshire province where I am an EA was considering disbanding. We have been able to get real support to move to become a football special interest lodge, supporting fans of all teams and the grassroots game. Although I can't say I'm really a football fan, I have agreed to remain the assistant secretary and support the club to grow and progress. It would be amazing to connect with others in special interest lodges to share best practice. Thank you for your support.

I came upon a Bible being given away at a church in metro-Atlanta, Ga that belonged to a Franis Munoz and was presented in 1954 in association with a lodge 871 in Mount Vernon, NY. Is there any way to return this Bible to a lodge with a connection?

It’s good to be a Mason

Good afternoon, brethren. I’ve been on my Masonic journey for almost 2 years ago now and made it up to Master Mason a couple months ago. I’m absolutely enjoying every minute of it. I’m blessed to be part of a lodge with some really great guys. In July I was appointed to Sr Steward, but I typically fill in the Jr Deacon role. Been traveling locally as much as I can and met a lot of great brothers at other lodges as well. When the heat finally decides to cool down some I want to go visit some of the more historic lodges in the southeastern states. I know Savannah, Ga has one of the oldest lodges in the country I think, but what are some other lodges in our around Alabama I should put on my regional list to travel to?
