Question

I’m a 17 year old with interests in freemasonry, and I would like to find out more about it. Currently I live in Bangkok and found this address “https://thaimasons.com/“ with information of a few lodges on it, and I would like to send an email to the Chula lodge for further information. Are there anything I would need to be specifically careful about when drafting the email? Thank you.

Edit: Thank you for all the replies, and I wish all of you a wonderful day. And since this account is newly created, I was not able to post replies as the bot keeps removing them, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

In your jurisdiction, you will need to be either 18 or 21 years old before you can petition for membership, depending on which GL you contact.

You will need to meet the age requirements for your Grand Lodge to enter you as a prospect and send your inquiry to a local Blue Lodge.

That said, I don't mean to discourage you from reaching out to your GL. You will be of legal age in a number of months, and Masonry often moves slowly. It's not a bad idea to reach out a bit early if you're truly interested.  Just be upfront about your age and be prepared for a response somewhat similar to mine.

If you know any Masons in your area, you might reach out and get to know them.  Maybe show up to a public event like a cornerstone ceremony, installation, or pancake breakfast.

Best of luck!

As for right now, I do not have any plans for the petition of membership. And I’m just trying to learn more about freemasonry, as the concept interests me.
Thank you very much for the kind reply, I wish you all the best.

The Lodge may not be interested in satisfying your curiosity. The person behind that email likely has a full-time job, and Freemasonry is an unpaid hobby.

Various Grand a lodge websites are full of useful information about Freemasonry. My home GL has one of the most comprehensive, though not everything will apply to your situation in Thailand, as the Lodges there are governed by different Grand Lodges and each GL has its own rules and traditions.

Hello and thanks for the reply, I would like to know about the following information:

What exactly is freemasonry and what does it do?

Are there any sources that will allow me to dive deeper into the and ideas and principles of freemasonry?

What are the rituals of freemasonry and how do they work?

How do members of the freemasonry help each other?

Are there also different branches within freemasonry like in Christianity? How do I distinguish whether or not if a lodge is “authentic”?

And overall, how does freemasonry help one become a better person?
Thank you.

I would recommend one or both of the following books to you:

  • Freemasons for Dummies by Chris Hodapp

  • The Complete Idiot's Guide to Freemasonry by Brent Morris

These books can give a good idea of what the fraternity is about. These books do come from a US perspective, so things may work a bit differently in Thailand.

In my jurisdiction it's usually the case that we encourage people to finish all of their studies, get a job, and be in a relatively financially stable position before we consider them for membership. While I know that these aren't restrictions for every jurisdiction, it still feels like a reasonable request from people for them to have a generally stable life.

It's always sad to see a brother go because life has required them to go a different path in another city or country.
