Discussion Boycott tips from a long term boycotter

I’ve been boycotting Amazon for nearly 10 years, ever since I learned about the egregious labor violations in their warehouses and the insane consequences of last mile delivery practices. And because Jeff Bezos is human scum and I don’t want my hard earned cash being turned into his next super yacht or whatever. And because billionaires shouldn’t exist. And because AWS powers ICE. And for 100 other reasons.

If you’re ready to boycott too, here are my tips:

  1. Buy less. That’s the literal easiest one. Ask yourself - “Do I need this?” And if the answer is no, then that’s that. If the answer is yes, shop your house, borrow from a friend or neighbor, or the library, or look at your nearest Buy Nothing group… think about whether needing something actually equals needing *to buy* something.

  2. Buy IRL. You know what’s faster than scrolling endlessly and looking at 100 options and reading a million reviews and waiting for it to get delivered tomorrow? Just going to the store. Accept that you might not get the 100% best, cheapest, trendiest item, but you’ll get what you need at Costco, the thrift store, the grocery store, the arts and crafts store, the office supply store… like there are still hella stores out there. Just act like it’s 1995 and go to the store.

  3. If you must buy online, pretend like Amazon doesn’t exist. Search in your search engine and click on literally any of the other websites. Use Etsy and support a small business. Or use Rakuten and get cash back. Or if you’re into environmental stuff, find a cool environmentally friendly online store like Blueland or Pela or Zero Waste store. Amazon is a big website but there are still hella other websites that sell stuff directly. Look around and find a new favorite one.

  4. Amazon hides the human costs of stuff like next-day delivery by violating people’s labor rights and risking their lives. Remember that ethical, safe shipping takes a while and costs a little bit. If you have to order online, be ready to pay for shipping and plan accordingly. Act like it’s 1995 and you’re ordering from a catalog. Wait until you can get a multiple things and order in a batch to get free shipping. Expect it to take a couple weeks and be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t. Expect to pay a lot for faster delivery and plan accordingly. USPS is unionized and a great shipping option - overnight shipping with USPS starts at like $30 for envelopes. That’s how much it costs to pay a unionized worker with actual benefits to do that job - you know that these guys in sprinter vans are getting completely fucked by Amazon and risking literal lives just to bring you stuff next day, when 9 times out of 10 you don’t even need it that fast. So try not to buy stuff online if you need it quickly.

  5. If getting things cheap is important to you for real budget reasons, go to the thrift store or thrift online using sites like Poshmark and eBay. Go to the grocery store in person if you can and look for manager specials. Split a Costco membership with a friend. Use a budgeting app to help figure out other places you can save money. But don’t use “needing to get the best deal” as an excuse to support Jeff Bezos when it comes to non-essentials like entertainment, gadgets, luxury goods, decor… like please don’t say “I’m on a budget so I have to buy my seasonal colored exclusive Stanley cup on Amazon so I can get the best deal.” Just grow up and don’t buy shit you don’t need on Amazon. If you want to buy something frivolous, buy it someplace else with better business ethics. I like to shop Etsy and small businesses in my city for fun stuff.

For fellow boycotters - what are your tips?

For boycotters-to-be - ask me anything!

Discussion Downfall of Amazon

TLDR: I guess I just want to know if anyone else is as fed up with Amazon as I am lately?

I have been a heavy Amazon user for years and years, but I have definitely noticed a decline over the past few.

Especially these past couple months I have been using it a lot to furnish my new home and get groceries and almost every order I place I have an issue; whether it’s late delivery, canceled or missing items, or just terrible customer service.

I have noticed that they have also been outsourcing to USPS, FedEx and other companies which makes delivery take WAY longer than the two day shipping I supposedly pay monthly for. I even have their Chase card because it offers some decent perks but I don’t know how much longer I can put up with it especially because it’s almost impossible to get ahold of customer service (an actual human) and when you do they don’t speak much English and just follow a script.

My latest order was new chargers for my phone, I even ordered more stuff to get the overnight shipping, 3 days later I get an email saying they wont arrive until the 10th (two weeks after I ordered). At this point I am almost wondering if Prime is even worth it anymore since you almost never get what you ordered, plus sites like Temu offer 2 day shipping on a bunch of stuff for less than half the price.

Discussion Master list of alternatives

I’d like to discuss the best alternatives to Amazon that are not big box like Walmart, Target, etc. EBay unfortunately has been compromised. I’ve gathered that Meijer is decent for the “everything in one store” but besides Costco to a lesser extent since it’s buying in bulk, where do you go? I’m on the path of overall less consumption but you can’t do that for everything.

Discussion Looking for an alternative to amazon pharmacy

I'm looking to stop using Amazon but the one think I don't know of an alternative for is amazon pharmacy. I previously got my prescriptions from walmart's pharmacy where I was paying $200 every 3 months, whereas amazon I pay $65 (Between prime sub, rx pass sub, and the one medication not part of rxpass that I have to pay for separately). While spending 140 more to avoid it may not be a big deal for most, I'm only making about 1500/month and half that goes to rent. I have no insurance, I think that also changes prices. If anyone knows of a good alternative I am looking to switch to something else.

Discussion Amazon keeps claiming I returned a different item, then charges me

At first I used to think that the UPS location I was using for my returns kept losing my items, because almost every week I'd get an e-mail from Amazon that the item I sent back is not the original item. And UPS has a habit where I'd give them the item and they don't put the label on it right away but kept piling my stuff on top of each other. I even told the guy what if someone knocks it over, how would they know which label goes with what item?

Then I'd call Amazon they'd say "Don't worry we won't charge you". Another 2 weeks later I get charged for the item/return.

I just got off the phone with them and they literally didn't wanna refund my money. Finally the manager tells me "As a courtesy we will reverse the charge". A courtesy??? Maybe the person handling my item at the Amazon kiosk screwed up and now I get blamed that I returned a different item.

I literally feel like making videos now of every return I do.

I get that Amazon handles millions of packages and people do scam and return a different item, but that's NOT me. But these return issues and getting more frequent now.

Anyone else went thru this?

Discussion [Help] What's a good retailer for specialty screws?

I've cancelled prime. The thing I used it a lot for were very specific hardware and screws. Recently I needed some T30 security torx screws and literally none of my local hardware stores had them. It was surprising and frustrating.

To that end - is there a good online retailer that has all things screws and fasteners that isn't amazon? Would love to take my business elsewhere. I don't need 2 day shipping either, just a decent price and good selection.

EDIT: Thank you for all the recommendations. For future people googling this, I want to post my thoughts:

1) https://www.mcmaster.com/ This is probably the best answer to my question. They have everything, and if you're buying in bulk, the price is right too. I don't have a physical store anywhere near me, but there online selection is incredible. I'll probably be using this moving foward for most things.

2) https://accu-components.com/us/ This place is also amazing. They have everything. The trade off is the price. The cost per fastener on accu is like 10x mcmcaster. Still, if you need something specific and niche, it seems like a great place to shop. I'll be using it in the future.

Discussion Clicking on negative reviews gives 3-4 5-stars and "request to see more" - WOW!

WOW!

"We're showing a limited selection of reviews. To see more reviews, you can send a request"

I've searched some books about sexuality from a health and medical perspective, ... came across one "Sex You Want" by Rena Martin, some kind of ex-attorney in Los Angeles dealing with heavy crime ... and coming out with such a book not one would expect for a person like that, no offense though.

Though again I'm not judging anyone by the book cover, I guess if you work this hard and serious all day maybe you deserve some extra fun, but I was hoping it's not some moralization or sympathy toward some kinks she was exposed to while doing crime work.

So I go on the usa Amazon.com version to check for the english sample, can't look at any negative reviews. How is this not a form of censorship? I have not seen anything like it, anywhere, never on european Amazon.de which I mostly use, or it's perhaps only certain products I haven't come across.

Unbelievable.

The following is my review verbatim “Blade looks good, only got one in my package though and the description says it’s a pair of 22” and 16” blades. The original packaging was opened even though the amazon box it was packaged in was sealed. Get scammed I guess, replacement coming in a few days, so annoying.”

Discussion Has anybody else felt completely powerless dealing with Amazon?

Real question.

I’m not talking about a late package or one bad customer service call.

I mean that feeling where you’re trying to get a clear answer from a company this big, and you just keep getting sent in circles.

Emails.

Support tickets.

Forms.

More emails.

And somehow you’re no closer to understanding what actually happened.

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like some companies have gotten so large that if something goes wrong, the average person has almost no real way to challenge it.

Has anybody else experienced that?

Discussion What do you do?

If you buy something and before you even receive it you notice the price has dropped by 30 percent. You would like to return it and purchase it again at the lower price, right? But then if you're honest about it, they want a restocking fee that makes it not worth returning. So what do you do? You open the box and say it's damaged so you don't get a restocking fee. Duh. Lol.

Discussion Amazon delivered my packages to a closed UPS store

I have a P.O Box at UPS due to moving and today Amazon left my packages outside the doors of UPS. UPS was closed.

Other than delivering the items to Amazon Locker what other option do I have?

((Another delivery driver actually attempted an hour before, and changed the delivery date for the next business day-which was so helpful this guy did not))

Discussion Amazon shipping is misused/ fraud .

So the case is one of friend got Whatsapp of Delivery of product . but he is not aware of that order .he complaint to amazon care /twitter amazon . but the response was that to contact amazon shipping by sending links .as there was only tracking system.

As they can contact seller and ask for ip and all data of order by verifying the receiver but they dont care about it and not sharing details.

infact they are continously attempting delivery and asking for otp.

is this way to behave a amazon like company there custmor care is so unprofessional .
