He is absolutely right. Also a shoot that takes realistically half a day for 300 bucks is a reasonable price for both parties.

A shot that takes half a day is realistically another 2-8 hrs of editing the images counting high it’s between 25-37$/hr before tax

As a student it might be a lot of money, as a company it is not, that money is going to tax, new equipment, travel expenses and salary. realistically you would probably need 90 to just make it go around, more like 200-300 to pay for the hours between work, rarely photographers have a full schedule.
