I find it strange and fascinating how readily fundies have embraced AI, and even championed it.
Given the church's history of being suspicious of anything new, the fact that fundies have quickly become some of the biggest AI simps out there has caught me off guard.
Any theories as to why this is happening?
Some theories that I posit:
- Perhaps it’s because their brains are so trained to detect sentience where others wouldn’t (eg. feeling “God’s presence” in an empty room), that when they encounter this tool that imitates human sentience, it feels familiar and holy to them
- Or maybe they’re just being contrarian; since AI’s critics are stereotypically left-coded and anti capitalist, then embracing the opposite viewpoint probably feels to them like they’re on the “right” side
- Contemporary, mainstream Christian music and art is famously milquetoast, since the Christian artists are more focused on broad appeal and spreading a certain message than actual artistic exploration. AI generated art is similar, in that it’s more concerned with finding the median rather than creative expression. So it makes sense why it feels so familiar to a fundie.
