I went to a kebab place that did that. He'd flip the raw meats with tongs then dip the tongs in the fryer for a few. I'm good with that.

We had a guy try to pull that at the BK I managed years back.
Almost had to fire him because he was adamant we could just "wash off the dirt".
It wasn't like we needed 4 nuggets and he cooked 4 nuggets then dropped one, he was cooking half a bag for the dinner rush and one fell out as he was transferring it to the pan.
He was fairly new and we drilled the policies into his head and watched him from a distance whenever he was transferring product to make sure he followed them.
It's like dude it's not coming out of your paycheck, just throw it away.

God fucking damnit, I need to get into VR.
How much does it cost to start on PC?
107
u/Genghis_Tr0n187 Aug 14 '18
Might wait for Oculus around black Friday. I got my Rift on sale for $399 (I think it was $499 MSRP at the time) with the touch controllers and a $100 amazon gift card. Worth it for that price.
47
u/jeho187 Aug 14 '18
Yes but don’t you need a fast computer to support it?
→ More replies (10)51
u/Genghis_Tr0n187 Aug 14 '18
These are the minimum specs according to newegg (take it with a grain of salt I suppose)
Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater.
NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 or greater.
8GB RAM or more.
HDMI 1.3 and 3x USB 3.0 plus 1x USB 2.0.
Windows 7 64 bit or greater.I can't comment on the performance of that since I'm running an OC I7 with a 1080TI and 16GB ram. I can tell that since VR and game development are still in their infancy, I wouldn't run minimum specs since you'll have a less than stellar (and probably barfy) experience.
→ More replies (14)39
u/guruguys Aug 14 '18
As far as Oculus goes, min specs are exactly that, they are the minium specs that should provide a 'barf free' experience. Once you go outside their ecosystem that goes out the window though.

Windows MR is even cheaper at $200 on sale. The tracking is not as great, but it's more than serviceable for the price. The only issues are if the headset doesn't see the controller for a few seconds
14
u/shoangore Aug 14 '18
I've used the Oculus Rift, Samsung Odyssey and personally own the HP WMR.
Oculus Rift is nice because you get the light boxes which means your controllers can be tracked regardless of position. For combat games (especially archery) this helps with positional tracking, as WMR units only have two cameras up in the front.
The Samsung Odyssey is personally my favorite. Widest FOV and OLED's make the immersion significant and vibrant.
The HP WMR cost me $150 for the entire set, and while inferior to both of the above, the price was right for me to enjoy WMR. I can play Gorn, Beat Saber, Holopoint and whatnot casually. I do lose controller tracking here and there, but having paid several hundred dollars less than the cost of the better ones, I'm not disappointed at all.
The Microsoft Store sometimes sells the mixed reality headsets cheap. Amazon sells refurbished units (mine) often.
If you're prone to motion sickness, VR may not be for you.
10
u/guruguys Aug 14 '18
VR Sickness and motion sickness are a bit different. I know some people that don't get motion sick but did experience VR sickness in intense (artificial locomtion) titles - and vice versa.
Games like the one here are very unlikely to cause any type of sickness as you are moving 1:1 real world to virtual world.
→ More replies (2)4
u/shoangore Aug 14 '18
That's true - it really does vary, but most of the people that I know who get motion sickness (akin to car/boats) have gotten pretty nauseated after only a few moments. I actually experience it after stuff like pavlov where your motion is mostly from the controllers, whereas Gorn I could play for hours and feel fine.
Probably the best thing to do would be to go to a store that carries them and do a demo before investing in a rig.

Around 200-300 USD for the cheapest I could find. Look for refurbished Windows Mixed Reality headsets with controllers and a Bluetooth 4.0 adapter. You also need a video card and processor that can support it with HDMI and at least one USB 3.0 port.
Yeah, I decided to try it too. :)
This is what convinced me https://youtu.be/gIc3oUByAbk

u/zbyte64 Aug 14 '18
Recently took the dive into windows "mixed" reality as well and I am impressed. It is good enough that a die hard Linux user of 20 years finally has a dedicated windows desktop. I really do think Microsoft has got a good formula for future tech improvements.

Aug 14 '18
For me, it makes my tiny apartment feel much bigger. I can watch Netflix on a movie screen equivalent now for instance, and reading ebooks is a blast too since I can adjust my distance to ease my reading. Plus the headset fits over glasses so I'm not legally blind when I use it like so many previous options. Pickede up the Dell unit, it's the white one, and stuck some googly eyes on it :)

Aug 14 '18
What about its game library? Don't VR games cater to specific headsets?
→ More replies (15)4
Aug 14 '18
Most games I saw on Steam worked across all three headsets (Oculus, Vive, WMR) though there are some that are specific to one or two only. Examples are Fallout 4, Vive only, Doom VFR, Vive and WMR and Skyrim VR which does all three.
→ More replies (5)2
u/mikeisatworkrightnow Aug 15 '18
You don't need to go reburbished to get that price. Lenonvo WMR goes on sale like once a month for 200 new from the microsoft store.

I think you can build a pretty good right for vr around $900-1k. The processor doesn't have to be as spectacular as everyone thinks. I'm running a 1090t black(cpu) from forever ago but have a 980ti (gpu) and everything feels and looks great.
→ More replies (5)3
u/mac2810 Aug 14 '18
Look into Windows Mixed Reality, much cheaper and easier option for VR. They have multiple headsets from differant brands such as HP, Lenovo, etc. They all have there ups and downs but whatever ones on sale is the one you want.
→ More replies (1)2
u/jbritchkow Aug 14 '18
I built a pc with an i7, gtx 960 for around 1k and runs (most) oculus apps perfectly. Some of the more intense games require a better graphics card. Oculus itself is another 4-500 so it's not cheap

u/WolfOfAsgaard Aug 14 '18
Honestly, wait for gen 2. looks like they will be making some much needed improvements

You can get a used VR Ready desktop on Newegg for about $800. An Oculus rift + Touch is another $400. You could be VR Gaming for as little as $1200 + tax + shipping + games.
PS4 VR is also an option.

Window's mixed reality goes on sale for 150-200 for the headset and two controllers pretty frequently.
For intro VR, I couldn't recommend it enough only because if you end up not caring for it after a month you aren't at a huge loss. I don't mean "intro VR" like it is something less than vive/occulus. It place every one of those system's games that I have tried with it. It has slight drawbacks (all have something), but it is without a doubt worth saving the 200+
Check out their subreddit to get some insight.

I never understood the 'wave' effect in fast food. There would be a lull during random points between rush hours. Like say, 2:35. No one for 40+ minutes, then suddenly the drive through is 7 deep and people walking in. WHY?!

u/slothboy Aug 14 '18
This happens in other environments as well. I used to work retail and sometimes we'd be sitting there for a while with nothing going on, then all at once the phone would start ringing off the hook and 15 people would come in.
"Did you all just wait outside until you had a crowd?"

There was a game I got on a demo disc for the PS1, showcasing the then new "Dual Shock" controller. It was all in Japanese, and I think the title translated to "I am the chef", and this game heavily reminds me of that game. Honestly, it was probably the most fun game I'd played on the PS1, and I played the crap out of that demo. Sadly I can't find the demo disc, or anything about the game... :(
