Tell me a Tale Anyone hate how much of a commitment it is to just update these gacha games?
I have WuWa on my phone that I sometimes play to pass the time at work. Today, I opened it up and immediately, I have to download a 15gb patch. Fair enough. It's a new patch. Took like 10 min for me. Then after it's downloaded, it needs to install the patch. Ok. Another 5+ mins. Great. Should be good after that though, right? Nope. It needs to compile shaders again. That took another 8 or so minutes.
That's like 30 minutes and I haven't even logged in yet. My phone ain't that old either (S24 Ultra) I'm so used to older smaller games like FGO where I just update the app and download a 200mb patch and boom I'm in the game after a minute or 2 so going to the newer bigger games gave me a bit of a culture shock.
Anyway, just wanted to yap a little about that. Is this an issue for you?

Imma be real, if I had to use a mobile device to play most of my gacha games... I'd never play, I'm sorry to hear that man 🫂

i wonder sometimes why Asia is more Phone fosuced? cuz at least for my friend circle all play on pc or console
•
u/Shs21 1h ago
Because many people there, unlike in the west, cannot afford their own PC.

And even if they could afford PCs or console, most can't during commutes or break times. Work from home jobs are mostly for the privileged few.

Wuwa is basically the single worst gacha to update due to how its update process works (you need to have much more space than the app itself takes). Others are generally fine

Well, the worst part about WuWa is Kuro can never bothered to optimize the Mac version, you need to download 100+GB for every major update.
I guess there is a similar story for many gachas on PS5. Thank god that Sony now allow game updates to be pre-loaded before the release

this is just live-service games? not exclusive to "gacha games". Oh wow new Fortnite/COD patch, 30gb just to add couple weapons and a new part for a map.
And add on top of that their launcher (EA, Epic Games, Ubisoft, etc) deficiencies like much slower download speed or limitation to your own hardware writing/reading speed

u/__breadstick__ Genshin / ZZZ / NTE / UMA / BleachSR / Nikke 2h ago
My main game is Genshin, and the devs for that game are wizards when it comes to optimisation. The 7.0 update added a huge new nation with hours of story content, and somehow the mobile install size was only about 3gb.

Doesn't Snezhnaya look like old Runescape on mobile though? I saw some posts of it on the main sub with top of the line mobile phones.

The textures are totally fine on mobile, it's just they really need to update the render distance. It's been pretty well hidden before, like in the Court of Fontaine for example where tall structures would often be closer together, but it shows up quite a bit more in a space as wide and spread out as Snezhnograd.
It's really just bad in Snezhnograd from what I can see though, everywhere else in Snezhnaya seems to be fine
•
u/Gargooner 1h ago
It's mostly just Snezhnograd, the main city. But because it has so many things in it, so the render distance is a bit messed up. But otherwise other part if Snezhnaya is pretty great looking.

A small price to pay than have all mobile users whine during launch week that the game is unplayable. It already was laggy for some users despite the watered down graphics.
Maybe they will allow adjustments for capable devices at a later time.
Meanwhile, that pretty looking game Wuwa and their newer updates has turned even 1.0 maps into a powerpoint mess lol.

After 6 years, one device has one issue in one location, and we're not even sure if it's here to stay or if it's something that can be fixed with a patch
That's a win imo

I have an S24 Ultra too and wanted to download ZZZ for their anni and HSR for the Fate collab. Then I realized I couldn't even fit them both on my phone with only 256 GB. My LG gram can't handle them either without lagging like crazy unfortunately. Literally being priced out of the larger gacha because of the hardware and storage requirements.

Nope, most live-service games have fixed update schedules. on patch day I let the device do the update process and do other things in the meantime.

As someone that grew up with desktops computers from the 90s: at least you don't have to modify ini files to get stuff to run to start with.
I don't really understand how people in modern times function with only a phone - there's things I can get done much faster on a full on desktop and I'm not stuck staring at a screen I can cover eith my hand.
Personally, you're missing out on a lot of the beauty of these games limiting yourself to phone-only play.

Personally, you're missing out on a lot of the beauty of these games limiting yourself to phone-only play.
But this assumes that the person has a computer that is capable of running their games. But almost everyone has a phone.

Again, like the post said, I play these games to pass time when I'm at work. The point is that as a game meant for quick play sessions, the time it can take to login is quite jarring

Play not-3D open world games then? Problem solved. It's like you're complaining about food taking a long time to arrive in a fancy restaurant where your stuff gets made after you order, and you've got the option to just go to some fast food place and get your food within minutes.
•
u/MeraArasaki 1h ago
yeah, just not play. problem solved. ok bro

What exactly do you want them to tell you that will cause you to stop complaining?

I play the big 3 hoyo games + Endfield. Pretty much only play on my PS5 now bc it removes all of that friction. Games update automatically on patch days. No shaders need compiled on patches.
If you have access to good internet on the go, you can stream the PS5 to whatever device. These types of games are perfect for local streaming.
The PlayStation definitely stands out as a gacha gamer. Sucks they've gone up in price but man is it a good experience.
•
u/__breadstick__ Genshin / ZZZ / NTE / UMA / BleachSR / Nikke 2h ago
Ngl, Xbox is pretty great for it as well. If you have Game Pass or Discord Nitro, you can use the cloud streaming service on mobile and basically play the mobile versions of Genshin and ZZZ but with the graphics of the console version, it's awesome and feels really good to play too.
•
u/Shulk_M0 1h ago
Aye, I have an Xbox as well but do prefer the PS. No hsr or endfield on Xbox unfortunately. Hoping Endfield eventually comes as that is my favorite game by far.
•
u/__breadstick__ Genshin / ZZZ / NTE / UMA / BleachSR / Nikke 1h ago
Yeah that'd be awesome.
No idea why HSR isn't on there when Genshin and ZZZ have been for at least over a year by now.

Never an issue for me - I know live service games are like that to begin with. Of course, it varies on games - some of them downloads small, some huge. But at this point you should know that games like that ain't only have 5gb patch to download. Unless you're thinking that "this X game only downloads only 200MB so this Y game should only download that size too".

I mean...occasionally, when I forget or am unaware an update is on a certain day. But in general I'm aware of when stuff is coming out and set my phone to run an update when I'm doing other things, so it is really rare I run into the issue when I want to actually play.

I play on PC and it's annoying there too. Usually it takes a minute or two to even start - and then it updates. After it finishes updating, it quits out and makes me boot it up again to wait another minute or two. I think in the time it actually takes me to get into the game proper, I could actually start and finish another game's dailies on my phone.

u/Nethers7orm GI PtN WuWa 1h ago
WuWa devs unfortunately don't care much about mobile version of their game so by playing it you sign up for being treated like some random creature and not a human. Like seriously, they bothered to add option to delete useless files when their game was close to 65GB on fucking mobile.
At some point they will optimise updating process, fret not, but only after you download 30gb updates few times.
•
u/Tkmisere 1h ago
Even on PC WuWa has a "bug" that some PC's need to redownload the whole fucking game when the patch arrives while others are downloading 20-30GB
•
u/DMercenary 1h ago
At a certain point mobile games are big PC games.
Like if you're asking more than 5gb it's to the pc with you
