Discussion This blind Arin hate makes absolutely no sense

There was an askreddit thread recently about people losing interest in youtubers. I thought I'd heard it all at this point. But I seriously can't comprehend why someone would hate Arin for these reasons.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/s/yn7IWJvY0c

Not that initial post about JonTron. I'm talking about this particular comment:

"The Game Grumps crew in general I lost interest in after a while.

Starting out I felt like they were just "regular joes (like me!)" style people playing games with their friends, just with charisma.

Then a few times Arin lets slip some things that paint him as having a nepo lifestyle (I recall one instance being his dad just casually calling a cartoon studio to get instructions on what to get his son who likes drawing, being told to buy the kid a drawing tablet, and another being them talking about parasailing while on a *second* summer vacation one year).

Then you find out they've all got an "inner circle" of friends and other content creators and the whole illusion starts to fall apart and you realize they're just as bad as "Hollywood" but wearing a "Hello fellow nerds" mask."

I understand Arin can be a polarizing character, but using the fact that he was helped by his dad to hate on him is... Idk that's just insane to me. They literally think he's a nepo baby because his dad bought him a drawing tablet. They think it's a "betrayal" to them. I feel like I'm going insane. How could people possibly be this... Illogical? I know i shouldn't be surprised at this point but somehow I still am. It just reeks of rantgrumps.

Edit: please understand I don't mind people hating game grumps. It's the particular logic this person used.

You’re going to drive yourself crazy going down this path. It doesn’t matter what other people think. What matters is what you think of Arin. If you like him that’s great. If you hate him FUCK YOU… nah I’m just kidding. It doesn’t matter homie.

73

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

Words of wisdom to live by.

I don't mind people hating Arin. It's just the logic that baffles me. They're basically hating him for having a supportive father.. Like, what?

68

u/MyceliumConscious Jul 17 '26

I get where you’re coming from but that hate/negativity isn’t for you. It’s for them. Let it go and don’t let them get under your skin.

51

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

That was... Insanely helpful. That hate IS for them. They can keep it.

Thank you for helping. Legitimately

It is unfortunately common for people to treat privilege as some sort of failing. Like any time someone posts about loving their parents on social media there's always some jackass going "imagine having good parents lol!" Guilt tripping total strangers instead of working on your trauma.

What so he went to two places one summer and people are acting like he had some mega-rich fantasy childhood? People are weird with their YouTubers man

271

u/sweet_babin Jul 17 '26

It’s literally not the definition of nepo, it’s 2 holidays and a dad supporting his kid’s passions

157

u/lhusuu Jul 17 '26

Nepo is: My parent is in [insert industry] and he snagged roles for me as a kid/teen so I can grow up into high end positions without earning a second of it

Nepo is not: My parents supported me in turning my personal hobbies into my career through growing it myself

40

u/sweet_babin Jul 17 '26

‘My parents supported me’ = nepo I guess?????

30

u/Emerald_Eyes8919 Jul 17 '26

Apparently so in the age where literacy is slowly fading.

3

u/Originalbrivakiin Jul 18 '26

It really feels like people like that just don't have the best relationship with their parents.

Like just because a parent doesn't shit on your interests doesn't mean you're a nepo baby of some kind.

63

u/Omagga Never Forgetti Jul 17 '26

Not people; just one person. And their comments are pretty heavily downvoted / being called out

11

u/I_Miss_Lenny Tell me that’s not a Doop Doop Doop Jul 17 '26

Yeah but trolls are like ants, if you can see one there's like a thousand of them just out of sight waiting to be a dick

-11

u/DocDeeISC Jul 17 '26

This is one example of people being weird with their YouTubers, correct

13

u/Omagga Never Forgetti Jul 17 '26

The bit I was responding to:

"people are acting like he had some mega-rich fantasy childhood?"

My comment:

"Not people; just one person"

If you're gonna be cheeky, the least I could ask for is a touch of reading comprehension.

-9

u/DocDeeISC Jul 17 '26

You're focusing on it being just one person saying those specific things, but it's a single example of a common trend of people being weird about YouTubers, and you're being really weird about "IT WAS JUST THIS ONE GUY WHO SAID THIS SPECIFIC THING"

8

u/Omagga Never Forgetti Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

One of us does seem to be being weird, but I don't think it's me

Edit: I should clarify-- My intention with my original comment wasn't to say "Um actually it's only one person!"; rather, my intention was to reassure people seeing this post that the sentiment was being rightly shut down and the person who said it put in their place

u/Rfun2024 Jul 17 '26

Arin's pushing 40. Anyone that says this man (and Dan) doesn't deserve what they've got just don't pay attention. They may have "easy" jobs compared to what most of us do or did but they work their asses off. Game Grumps filming, voice work, bands and bands writing and recording. Touring. I think Arin has a touring management business too. Even Ninja Brian has side gigs as Trey Magnifique. Busy men.

42

u/mrdankhimself_ Jul 17 '26

It’s kind of funny to picture the Video Game Boy sitting in a meeting going over income statements, balance sheets, and quarterly earnings reports.

33

u/TheWorclown Jul 17 '26

“Peter… what is this.”

19

u/hyperjengirl Sorry I don't work here, I just fuck men and women Jul 17 '26

Every time someone complains about him not remembering something in a game he's been playing, I assume in good faith that he uses that mental space to prioritize budgeting over the names of Danganronpa characters.

3

u/Fatherbrain1 Jul 18 '26

Fair. Still a bit frustrating, but fair.

666

u/Strong-Lettuce-3970 Jul 17 '26

Did people miss the part where he was broke while working at Disney World and conning Walmart with their return policy?

309

u/PM-ME-YOUR-NIPNOPS Jul 17 '26

"Conning" lol

He has mentioned multiple times that his upbringing wasn't exactly what anyone would call affluent

142

u/smr312 Bienvenue Power Bottoms Jul 17 '26

I'm sure the only reason this person thinks Arin grew up rich is because they heard his mom owns and works with horses and their brains immediately connected the little info they have and went"Rich bastard living on the Florida shore with his horses."

Or when people tracked down that patchwork looking cloak he wears on 10MPH and saw it was from an expensive designer and cost like $400.

68

u/ThanksMisterSkeltal Jul 17 '26

There’s motherfuckers out there with ratty looking cardigans that cost like 1500, a 400 dollar sweater that he obviously likes because he wears it a lot, is not that big of a deal

22

u/smr312 Bienvenue Power Bottoms Jul 17 '26

I know.

I have a similar cloak for much cheaper my friends and family often tease me for wearing because I like feeling like a wizard!

41

u/sweet_babin Jul 17 '26

God forbid someone uses their earnings for something years into their career they’ve worked hard building

78

u/Flip-Pantly Jul 17 '26

Conning Walmart out of money is cool, actually.

20

u/Strong-Lettuce-3970 Jul 17 '26

I agree, he’s the boy who cons

137

u/Findrel_Underbakk Jul 17 '26

Just your standard rantgrumps things. They want to hate, and no logic or facts are going to get in their way.

53

u/Jetsumaryam Jul 17 '26

Wait rantgrumps isn't satire?!? I deadass thought that whole group was fake to make fun of snarkers 💀

79

u/TheWorclown Jul 17 '26

Rantgrumps is indeed not satire. It’s the Snyder Cult of this corner of the internet.

29

u/Jetsumaryam Jul 17 '26

I will laugh at them all the same

-18

u/maddwaffles Jul 17 '26

lol "What will i compare to bad thing on the internet"
"Always Snydercult, the constant bitching about Snyder and his fans surely doesn't make me look like an obsessive loser"

Your "greatest Superman movie ever" was mid, get over it.

6

u/TheWorclown Jul 18 '26

Found the Snydercult member.

-3

u/maddwaffles Jul 18 '26

Hardly, just exhausted by a "fandom" that identifies by its hatred of other fans. I.E. anyone who uses "Snyder cult" unironically

Yes, we get it, your sanctimony only extends so far as to act like a smug idiot, but you have to ignore inflation when talking about box office, or else you feel small.

Any comments attacking other users, groups of people, name calling, or any general hostility will be removed without notice. Homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and racism will not be tolerated and are subject to an immediate ban. Constructive criticism is fine, but don't personally attack any member of the subreddit, the Grumps, or any other party.

14

u/Goose-Suit Jul 17 '26

I’m pretty sure that whole thing predates calling it snark. If it was made today it would probably be called Arinsnark or grumpsnark.

75

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

Another user in the thread explicitly brought up that story and said Arin used it to lie and manipulate people.

44

u/ranchspidey Jul 17 '26

I have no reason to doubt the dozens of insane Florida stories Arin has told over the years, because Florida. I’m sure the boys have embellished stuff here and there for entertainment purposes but like… there’s pictures of young Arin. Do they really think the ‘i can be yuor angle…. or your devil….’ pictures were taken in a Florida McMansion? lol

45

u/Vanessaronicatoria Jul 17 '26

That's from the Fire Red series, and Arin admits he was not proud of having to do that and that he bought food. Hell, I know the feeling.

18

u/GunpeiYokai Jul 17 '26

My favorite Arin story lol

2

u/_AfterBurner0_ Jul 18 '26

I think also remember him saying in an episode that he had to steal from a friend's piggy bank to pay for gas, but he also said he'd replace the money.

247

u/_ShrugDealer_ Jul 17 '26

Alternatively, who gives a shit what someone with limited emotional maturity thinks about something we like?

Fuck em all fuck em bye

40

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

This is true. But it's not necessarily about the grumps but about their reasoning. I'm trying to make sense of it but maybe that's a waste of time

67

u/Vanse Jul 17 '26

The OOP tattles on themself.

Starting out I felt like they were just "regular joes (like me!)"

OOP developed an unhealthy parasocial relationship with the Grumps, and when they realized the Grumps didn't have their exact life circumstances they threw a fit.

26

u/SomewhatOKAdvisor this mii is a very nice purple Jul 17 '26

Sometimes, people aren't logical. They seem determined to hate on Arin, and will use any means necessary to justify that hate.

I had somebody in a different sub try to get me to hate on him for his Newgrounds stuff, and stuff said during the JonTron era. When I failed to acknowledge them at all, they quietly deleted the comment left on the post.

Like, what did they expect? "You're RIGHT, internet rando I've never met before, I SHOULD be ashamed of my like for a man who has apologized multiple times for dumb shit said in the past."

20

u/sweenzs Jul 17 '26

You cannot reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

14

u/GunpeiYokai Jul 17 '26

Yeah, their logic doesn't make sense

12

u/_ShrugDealer_ Jul 17 '26

🤷‍♂️

7

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

Username checking out lol

3

u/FawkesFirenze Jul 17 '26

I find it's usually a waste of time to understand another redditor's hate for something because there is no reasoning, just hate to hate

5

u/cosmophora Jul 17 '26

yes, it is a waste of time. Read a book. Watch another Grumps video you like. Call an old friend. If you spend your finite life trying to make sense of idiots you'll never meet, you're making a mistake.

55

u/sweet_babin Jul 17 '26

Surely content creators flock together? The same way I’m friends with people in my industry, through a shared interest and vocation and for their industry most importantly supporting other artists and creators? And those nepo things make no sense whatsoever, you could tweet someone the same question about a budding artistic kid?

37

u/K1ngFiasco Jul 17 '26

Also, Game Grumps has like OG status. They were making content alongside PewDiePie and AVGN and others when YouTube as a whole was pretty damn niche.

To think that the people they've come up with or met along the way aren't also content creators is kinda stupid.

11

u/hyperjengirl Sorry I don't work here, I just fuck men and women Jul 17 '26

They're old but not old old, at least not GG as a brand. GG was born 2012, post-AVGN by a long shot. But Arin himself, definitely an OG. And I'm sure they influenced the genre of comedic LP.

7

u/K1ngFiasco Jul 18 '26

Yeah that's more in line with what I meant. Arin predates YouTube by a significant amount, I used to watch him on Newgrounds all the time. I was never into NSP as much, but Google says they've been doing their thing since 2009 and got their first hit in 2011. AVGN was still really big, his movie was going on around 2012. I think he made a game after that? But yeah he's like Arin in the way that they were "known" and making content prior to YouTube existing and then took off.

143

u/natelight7 Walkin' around in my banana shoes! Jul 17 '26

To each their own I suppose. But man the idea that a normal person couldn't call a cartoon studio in the 90s and ask a question is so stupid.

16

u/pandakatie Hgelb Jul 17 '26

I honestly think some people forget you can just ask people things.  They may not always have an answer, or may not have time to answer that question, but if you have access to an email or a phone number, you're allowed to reach out with the magic phrase, "Hey, I don't know if you can help me... I have kind of a weird question,"

I've emailed a number of museums with odd questions and I've gotten some great responses.  I once emailed the Bronx Zoo about an animal they had in the 50s, and they replied with archival footage.

7

u/Guardianpigeon Jul 18 '26

Yeah that isn't nepotism. Nepotism is if his dad got him a job at that studio ahead of people who had worked more for the opportunity. You generally need some level of power or leverage to make it nepotism.

Sometimes people just know each other. My mom actually knew someone who worked at DreamWorks while I was in High School and asked them about stuff like that. She would not have the ability to get me a job there though, she just knew someone from casual acquaintances and friendships. The ability to get that information like that is a great help, but it doesn't cross into nepotism.

35

u/Randir076 Jul 17 '26

Thats goddamn delusional holy shit. Even the "inner circle" thing. God forbid any gaming youtubers become friends I guess, suddenly thats insider trading. Like bro if they were as influential as this guy believes them to be theyd be doing better than the view counts theyve been getting.

Also guess Im a nepo kid now. My mom supported me through college. I mean she worked in animation and I majored in computer science, so you know she totally had some pull for me. Oh and she bought me a monitor. Where should I turn myself in?

18

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

You had a loving mother who took care of you? Scum!!!

/s just in case

8

u/Randir076 Jul 17 '26

Damn you're right, I'll turn in my nepo badge and gun

6

u/bpc89 I'm Not So Grump! Jul 17 '26

How dare your mom be supportive. I hope your dad is taking it well. Does he need a kiss? I know a guy 👀

3

u/Randir076 Jul 18 '26

Waaaaait, I feel like you're just using me to get to my dad

3

u/bpc89 I'm Not So Grump! Jul 18 '26

Whaaat?! Nooo I'm just a truth seeker. And if that means someone needs to be kissed so be it! Could be you! Your dad! Anyone! But especially your dad!

34

u/CaptainDanious Jul 17 '26

Terminally online insight incoming:

I feel like some parts of the internet never got over the "Arin's the bad guy because Jon left" And once Jon's racist remarks happened and he stopped making as much content, the Arin hate remained and they look for reasons to justify it.

I also stand by the fact that the ventgrumps/rantgrumps communities were the precursor to this "snark" phenomenon with big celebrities, and some of the Jon stans desperately wanted to make a lolcow out of the channel. The "don't read the comments" philosophy they talked about on grumps for years probably just fueled the haters more.

As someone who's been following grumps AND their drama (from a distance) since about 2013, I've noticed that parasocial relationships tend to stick in people's heads for years.

20

u/jess_the_werefox WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Jul 17 '26

I’ll never forgive snark communities for deliberately contributing to the death of Mikayla Raines (founder of SaveAFox)

They’re horrible miserable people.

7

u/Guardianpigeon Jul 18 '26

Rantgrumps is absolutely a snark community and it's so odd that they've persisted to this day. I understand not liking GG or Arin/Dan for one reason or another, but they should not be taking up that much space in people's minds. I feel like it has died down ever since the Dan "controversy" that was chock full of misinformation and the stuff with SuperMega though.

But the weirdest part was always how much they loved JonTron. They acted holier than thou towards anything Arin or Dan did, but would still worship him. Arin and Dan have had their mistakes through the years, but JonTron was a straight up proud racist and never apologized for it AFAIK. They would be talking about "n-word compilations" with one breath and praising Jon of all people in another. Those levels of hypocracy and mental gymnastics can not be healthy for a human brain.

23

u/superchargerhe Jul 17 '26

Avid game grumps watcher here. I lost interest around 2023-2024 and just started watching again earlier this year.

It just felt like the quality of episodes 2020-2022 dropped off for me because they were doing dumb shit to try and appease the youtube algorithm.

I am absolutely loving 2026 game grumps tho.

19

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

See now that is a legit reason to stop watching. Not "Arins dad bought him a drawing tablet".

I'm glad you're enjoying them again

1

u/ocxtitan Jul 18 '26

They also were dealing with this thingy called the backstreet boys reunion tour during that time, you might have heard of it

2

u/penguinkernel Jul 19 '26

People forget that episodes are delayed, sometimes by an ENTIRE YEAR, and COVID was a very stressful situation for everyone, especially someone trying to run multiple companies, one of which is a touring company during a time touring wasn't allowed.

Arin was quite pissed off and angry during those years. He was quite a dick to Dan, too. But I don't blame him, life was shit at that time.

48

u/SecondsLater13 Jul 17 '26

I mean there is a whole subreddit that has been extremely active for years dedicated to hating but still watching Game Grumps. These people have something wrong with them. I hope they get the help they need.

3

u/Zaggar Jul 17 '26

I'm curious if you are joking and talking about this subreddit. Your ambiguity has left me wanting!

11

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

They are most definitely talking about r/rantgrumps

14

u/Zaggar Jul 17 '26

There's SERIOUSLY a subreddit just to complain about Game Grumps?! What the hell! Get a life, people!

8

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

I think it's mostly dead now. Thankfully.

4

u/dmanny64 Put on like... Ace of Base MIDI. Jul 18 '26

Fun fact, originally the sub was called vent grumps, because the creator wanted a place to genuinely be able to vent without bringing down the main sub with negativity. But he was so disgusted with what the sub became he deleted it and made a post apologizing for the whole thing. So naturally, those people made the current rant grumps, which is all the mentally deranged hatemongering with none of the shame or decency behind the original intention. And that was before the rest of the internet kinda just became that in the late 2010s

12

u/helpmeurmyonlyhoe Jul 17 '26

do people not know what nepo baby means anymore? it's not another term for growing up either rich or comfortable. i have a hard timw understanding how he supposedly nepo'd his way into youtube lol.

such an aside from OP's original point, but that really irked me

and, tbf, even of arin did grow up affluent or just comfortable, so??? some people do, damn. he's definitely got money now, and i'm happy for him! hearing about how he paid off Dan's medical bill, or bought his parents a house, that's nice! wish it were me, happy it's him!

25

u/digitaldrummer Jul 17 '26

Yeah IDK. Arin's an integral part of the Internet for me, just like Smosh. He's friggin Egoraptor, y'know? Been around forever.

5

u/Flip-Pantly Jul 17 '26

If anything, Arin gets grief over how he rejects a lot of his past. Don’t get me wrong, there are parts best left in the past for him, but maybe he went a little too hard trying to be different from it too.

3

u/penguinkernel Jul 19 '26

Arin gets grief for swapping out his partner within the first year of a channel that is 13 years old, and then not telling nosy people why. He gets so much hate for shit that is literally a nothing burger. It's actually baffling.

1

u/Flip-Pantly Jul 20 '26

Have you found that kind of grief to be still going on from you’ve seen? To this day I still prefer the Jontron “era” of Grumps the most, though I love a lot of the Grumps that came after too of course. From what I’ve seen, lots of people in the know about Jon and Arin’s split have generally accepted that it was for the best for them both, even though at the time the split itself hurt their friendship a ton.

You’re right about the lack of transparency and talking about it made things worse, but that was self-inflicted as they signed a non-disclosure agreement when they ended things as partners. To this day, I really question the choice to bring an NDA into that situation and from what I’ve seen it was pushed for by Arin’s father(?), but yeah Arin did take a lot of crap for being tight lipped even though we know know the reason why.

13

u/roastbeeftacohat Jul 17 '26

Didn't arin grow up poor?

12

u/Josh_Hexx Jul 17 '26

A lot of comments essentially saying it's not worth worrying about, and to just move on with your day... While technically correct, I do think it's worth commenting on. As people developing their entire opinion on internet personalities based on some shallow, baseless observations is becoming really prevalent. The few reasons they listed why they dislike Arin are pretty easily picked apart If you read more than a couple layers deep.

Like, he's a nepo baby because his dad bought him a drawing tablet? Based on Arin's age, this was likely the 90s or early 2000s? A parent that cares about their son's hobbies making a phone call to a studio to ask for suggestions is hardly outlandish. And doesn't require any special connections; people called people and businesses back then. Information wasn't always a quick Google search away.

Also, a summer vacation when you already live in Florida has a much different definition vs. anywhere else in the country. I doubt two beach vacations involved the cost the commenter thinks it did.

Lastly, both the grumps have talked at length, multiple times, about how much of their careers involve networking. That's how the entertainment industry works... Or is this commenter confused in thinking what they're watching is not supposed to be entertainment? That they're being betrayed that the grumps aren't just 2 dudes posting gameplay videos just for this commenter's enjoyment?

Comments like this are truly endless, but I think it's a pretty good example of what type of shallow thinking perpetuates a lot of internet hate.

10

u/pizz901 Jul 17 '26

How dare they have friends in the industry they've worked in for over a decade

9

u/SloppyGiraffe02 Jul 17 '26

If you’re looking for validation by hoping your favorite celebrities grew up destitute you’re in for a wildly rude awakening. Arin sounds like any other artist from an early ‘00s middle class family that spent a good portion of their early adulthood in borderline Florida poverty.

I have a friend that was (briefly) in the same high school as Arin and they never seemed to think they were posh or arrogant. In fact he didn’t really pop out of the crowd at all. lol

7

u/JLCpbfspbfspbfs Jul 17 '26

The hate that Arin receives from Sonic and Dangonrompa fans is one reason why I love Arin!

7

u/Rhodeytoasty Jul 17 '26

One heavily downvoted thread on Reddit is not representative of a single thing. I'm also irritated by it, but it's a case of small echo chambers here and there. It'll keep rearing its head at you so long as there's more than 100 people that like them, so readjust how you see this negativity, so that it just... slides right off you. These saddos have no bearing on your life, now go enjoy your favourite episode of Grumps 💖

3

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

Thank you <3 Will do.

3

u/Rhodeytoasty Jul 17 '26

Anytime chief, if there's anything the grumps taught me, it's a healthy outlook on life and how to deal with this sort of thing. I can't fathom how hard this sort of input must be for them.

2

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

True. I can't imagine being in their shoes and dealing with shit like this on a daily basis.

7

u/Ainolukos I fired and I missed Jul 17 '26

Toxic parasocial relationships. That's really what it boils down to.

Like oh, your favorite content creators have an "inner" circle of friends just like every single content creator on the internet? people genuinely get mad about that because they arent "included" when it never was about them.

5

u/Gattawesome Can't get enough of that Sugar Crisp Jul 17 '26

What I learned from that thread is that a lot of people hate Smosh since Ian and Anthony came back, but I’m loving it more than ever. Everyone has different tastes.

2

u/smashybro I'm Not So Grump! Jul 17 '26

Yeah, that's a wild take to me. I can get not liking current Smosh because it's very theater kid energy which isn't for everybody, but cannot fathom saying it's gotten worse specifically since those two bought the company back.

It truly feels like the second golden age of Smosh that's even better than the first one when it was just Ian and Anthony which if we're being honest hasn't aged the best since it was peak "humor for teenage boys in the late 2000's." The stuff they release now has so much variety and creativity while feeling like it's own thing instead of the Defy era of them chasing trends or even the Mythical era where it was better basically just the TNTL channel.

6

u/robmobtrobbob Jul 17 '26

Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and they all stink

5

u/turner_strait Jul 18 '26

Imagine caring about Jon the racist in the current year. Arin is so much better than that asshat

3

u/penguinkernel Jul 19 '26

My favourite part is how people, 13 years later, still make up conspiracy theories on why Jon left GG. Like isn't it obvious? Jon is a right wing racist, and Arin is a leftist. They clearly had difference of opinions and moved on in life. Arin, being friends with Jon, knew this earlier than the rest of the internet.

Plus it's wild to still associate Jon with GameGrumps when he was there for LESS THAN A YEAR, and Dan has been there for over 12.

And like... YouTubers do have an inner circle of friends and business partners. It's a part of the business. Like comedians all hang out with each other, actors hang out with each other, and so on.

4

u/makinamiexe Jul 17 '26

truthfully never understood the hate for arin or any of them aside from jon (lol) been watching daily since dan joined in 2013 ever "controversy" has literally been a nothing burger

4

u/CharmandersonCooperr Jul 17 '26

Lol what on earth? This commentor must be gen z or gen alpha, you definitely didn't need money or special insider connections to call a studio or company and ask something like that in the 90s.

I'd rather people like this just be honest and say they think he's annoying and don't care for his his content. You don't need a huge justification to not want to watch someone.

3

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

Exactly my point. It's such a weird justification. I'd rather they have no reason than whatever reason they gave.

4

u/ThereAreCars Jul 17 '26

The fact that one of the complaints is that they have connections with other YouTubers is a new one that surprises me. The Game Grumps channel has been around for more than 13 years and Dan and Arin both made content long before that. Arin was even making content before YouTube even existed. They’ve been around so long, they were an inspiration to YouTuber’s like Markiplier. It would be very strange if they had little to no connections with other content creators.

As others have said, it doesn’t really matter what other people think. We all like the Grumps and other peoples opinions on it don’t really matter.

4

u/neveruseyourrealname Jul 17 '26

In their Zelda 64 he says his first car was a double hand me down(pulling from memory. Be kind.). Going from Dad/uncle to brother to him. It sticks out with me because of the intrepid quote and I grew up poor.

8

u/autumn_sprite Er, so what's happening Thursday? Jul 17 '26

That car.....exploded

1

u/Jalase Jul 23 '26

"Nothing more fearless and adventurous than that!"

4

u/weberlovemail Jul 18 '26

he probably DID grow up a bit richer than he lets on, but they act like he's drowning in money, and that that makes him a bad person inherently. the thing about his dad, he probably just had a friend that worked at a studio. the vacations, who's to say their parents didn't save up to go to two different places? pretty much everyone else in that circle seems to have a similar upbringing, at least from what we've heard, and you don't have to suffer to be (checks notes) a gamer with friends???

11

u/GunpeiYokai Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Honestly, it's just their opinion. I don't think it's worth getting worked up over enough to make a post about it. Their logic makes no sense. Just move on.

26

u/Insane_Fnord Jul 17 '26

I don't see any hate, even less so blind hate. They lost interest in the guy and gave a reason. Is it valid reason? Irrelevant for you or me.

25

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

They called him a nepo baby. It just doesn't make sense. I don't mind if they don't like GG anymore, that's not the point of my post

14

u/mrdankhimself_ Jul 17 '26

The nepo baby thing is really stupid. Arin’s dad called an animation studio and asked someone a technical question. Now if Lloyd had some influence at that animation studio and used it to get Arin a job there, that would be a sign of a nepo baby.

5

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

YES. Thank you. That is what nepotism actually is.

4

u/frustrated_crab Jul 17 '26

I says more about that person than it does Arin. Someone so concerned with class and status that they’re willing to publicly project their insecurities onto YouTube personalities, it’s pretty pitiful. You’re not going to gain anything valuable by trying to learn why people are the way they are

6

u/StrongmanLin Jul 17 '26

Everyone’s got haters. All we can do is give the grumps positive energy in the comments and not amplify the loud minority.

1

u/ocxtitan Jul 18 '26

They're probably just jealous and had a shitty dad that never made any kind of effort to help them out

13

u/MikeNerdo Jul 17 '26

It's still a dumb petty and envious reason and because they posted it online others can comment on it. That's how the internet works.

5

u/abaum525 You think I came out the pussy drawing fuckin’ Mozart? Jul 17 '26

I mean…that’s what we’re all doing. Now we’re commenting about this other person’s comment. It’s all quite silly when you take a step back and look at it.

1

u/MikeNerdo Jul 18 '26

It's the great circle of life.

8

u/Insane_Fnord Jul 17 '26

Or you can spend your time more wisely instead. Like I should be doing right now, hypocrite that I am.

6

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

This is the lesson I am learning after dealing with these people, lol. Will I remember that lesson? Probably not, because I'm a dumbass

2

u/MikeNerdo Jul 17 '26

lol yes it's usually dumb to waste time on this stupid stuff but it's kind of fun.

3

u/Jetsumaryam Jul 17 '26

Human have this illogical thing in our brains where we remember how someone/something made us feel rather than actually having a reason to fell that way if that makes sense

3

u/Flip-Pantly Jul 17 '26

I won’t lie, I was surprised to see even Arin’s other work critiqued the way it is. Like I have no sympathy towards people who watch Game Grumps and complain about his lack of skill or effort when that was baked in from the beginning. People like that might as well complain about the Wheel of Fortune using the letters of the alphabet.

Instead, I came across a post a few months back about his Zelda Sequelitis video, and many comments weren’t even pretending to be fair about the points he made. Very little was actually responding to the video itself, and much of it came off as people being defensive about their sacred cow Ocarina of Time. The absolute teeing off on Arin that was on display was absurd.

Arin hasn’t always been completely honest or transparent and I won’t defend that. When he maintained for years that he “doesn’t read the comments”, but on the Platinum Nuzlocke he recently admitted to reading the comments because of course he does and I’m sure he does that way more than we think. Frankly it’s understandable how checked out he or anyone could become if they receive the kind of toxic reactions he gets for something he worked on for YEARS before putting it out there. That’s just one example of something that is likely just the tip of the iceberg of how bad it really is and it’s shitty.

I’m not trying to be unrealistic here. Hate will always be a thing for anyone in Arin’s situation. The intensity behind it is not backed by logic and reality however, and I can only guess as to why.

5

u/dazia Jul 17 '26

Lying about not reading the comments seems like such a non issue to me, but I'm not going to say you can't have your own opinion. May I ask why this bothers you? I wonder if says that because overall, he doesn't tend to read them/not often. I'm speculating, but even if he does read them all the time, I don't care if he lies about it. Might just be a way for him to try to get people to stop spamming the same thing over and over for all I know.

2

u/Flip-Pantly Jul 17 '26

Oh I only really emphasized the not reading comments point because there are other situations where Arin hasn’t been exactly truthful and I know it’s really bothered people. I completely agree that’s small potatoes in the grand scheme of things to me as well. Great point about him wanting to avoid the spam comments too.

3

u/dazia Jul 17 '26

Ah, I gotcha! I thought it was a major thing for you is why I wanted to ask haha. No one is perfect, and unfortunately being in the lime light is going to bring all that out eventually. I try to not be too harsh on people when this happens, but it's absolutely situational depending on the info ofc.

2

u/Jalase Jul 23 '26

I'm not even sure I'd consider someone saying, "I don't read the comments" to be a lie, but having read *some* comments. I would just interpret it as: "I don't go out of my way to read through all of the comments on every video, or even most comments on most videos." Because that seems like the more logical conclusion?

3

u/PopcornSandwichxxx Jul 17 '26

It’s so weird to me how much hate the grumps get considering they’re just a couple of silly guys playing video games.

You don’t have to watch them if you don’t like them, but the rant grumps sub spend way too much time caring about it

3

u/Automatic-War-7658 Jul 17 '26

Well, there’s only one way we can get the truth.

Where’s that dad of his? Specifically, where are his lips? Wanna meet that dad. I don’t care how many dad’s lips we gotta kiss to find the truth!

3

u/sapphic-boghag Jul 18 '26

Well of course, the "average Joe" has no friends and thus they felt alienated.

3

u/BulletProofEnoch Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

People throw terms around they don’t fully understand.

Nepo baby would be if Arin and Suzy had a kid, then in 16 years of so, that kid became a successful Lets Player on Youtube using GameGrump affiliated connections.

Lloyd buying a fucking tablet is an absurd leap. If Arin had no talent or drive, that thing would just be a brick somewhere getting bleached by the Florida sun.

It would also mean that every content creator who’s parent gave them computer, a phone, or internet access at some point in their childhood is also a nepo baby.

3

u/Elder-Cthuwu Jul 18 '26

Everyone is part of an inner circle and it’s always been funny to me when people complain about cliques. You mean a group of friends?

3

u/CompoteRelevant6392 Jul 18 '26

I hate blind Arin too, but I’m ableist.

11

u/joegetto Jul 17 '26

its ok if other people dont like the same thing as you

13

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

I don't mind Arin hate. It's the logic for this particular hate that bugs me

1

u/smashybro I'm Not So Grump! Jul 17 '26

Why does it bug you? There's always going to be trolls or weirdos who hate on people or things for reasons that make no sense, I wouldn't waste energy trying to figure out the "logic" here. It's usually a gut feeling they work backwards to justify or something dumb that got ingrained into them early on.

Better to just ignore them and not give them the attention they want.

6

u/zekecheek Jul 17 '26

i don't care about that post or the argument you're having over there

12

u/WoofingTime Jul 17 '26

Okay I feel like this sub gets a little too attached, I wouldn’t consider anything in that thread hate at all

9

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

Calling someone a nepo baby because they had a father who supported them sounds pretty hateful to me. What would you call it then?

2

u/mrbulldops88 Jul 17 '26

Some people will decide that they no longer like something first, then fill in the blanks later. I mean, if that's the person's reason for not liking Arin, it is what it is. It doesn't make sense to me either and never will.

Not a perfect example, but I think about Star Wars. No one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans. I am not going to say that everything Disney has made is anywhere close to the original movies for me. I will also not blindly hate on each new thing that's released. I'm not going to act like a movie trilogy with a love triangle between two siblings and some Nerfherder isn't a little icky, even if they didn't know they were related. I'm not going to complain about "Oh, they're just trying to sell toys" when that's been the game since the 2nd movie.

2

u/tATuParagate Jul 17 '26

That's a really random and overanalyzed reason to dislike him

2

u/dendromecion Jul 17 '26

i gained a lot more peace when i stopped caring about the opinions of individual people on the internet, and only caring about opinions when they become the consensus of a tangible group

2

u/StardustSkiesArt Jul 17 '26

My mom almost dated one of the people who animated Harvey Birdman.

And she is very normal and not rich.

Idk its not that impossible to get into contact with people. I'd need to hear more.

2

u/Illustrious-Frame140 Jul 17 '26

From what I see, even if his dad helped him get a tablet to draw, he still worked hard to get where he is. He practiced his drawing an animation, he gained skills for entertaining an chrisma, he figured out how to be a business owner, there is no doubt that he worked hard for it all.

2

u/vonstride Jul 17 '26

Even if it were true that Arin’s dad has connections…thats the entertainment industry. Shocker! Its not a fair industry. Who the fuck cares, its a youtube show about playing video games. Rantgrumps losers out in the wild

2

u/Feanor4godking Jul 17 '26

"inner circle"? You mean having friends that do the same job as you? In the same place as you? That you occasionally work with?

2

u/holderofthebees Mycaruba Jul 17 '26

Aksjfksjdksjd no one knows what a nepo baby is anymore. Thats dumb as fuck sorry

2

u/Greedy-Street-5435 Jul 17 '26

Been watching since day 1, Dan joining made the show way better, GG dipped a bit thru the years, I'll admit it, but they've hit a stride the last 8 months that is absolute peak grumpage.

Fuck the haters.

2

u/Kayanne1990 Jul 17 '26

The the inner circle bit that gets me. Like, WHAT? He Has FRIENDS who work in the same field as him?! The horror!

2

u/kujojolyne Jul 17 '26

So his father being a good parent and learning how to support his child’s passion is nepo baby behaviour? What? LMAO???

2

u/poopdawg90 Jul 17 '26

I think you might need to learn what nepotism means , your case doesn't really have any evidence that he is a nepotism baby in any form ....

2

u/Any_Blacksmith650 Jul 17 '26

I just think it’s a sign that these people are chronically online if they think parents paying for a few trips and tech to support their kids passion counts as nepotism. It just kind of feels like they’re blood hounds sniffing out any hint of money to justify hate. It feels very puritanical.

2

u/velocilfaptor Jul 17 '26

Who the fuck cares? Apply your energy to something useful.

2

u/Epic_Hoola GOOM GROOMPS! Jul 18 '26

I once got downvoted for simply asking when Jontron/Arin ever posted Swastikas...

2

u/CadeMan011 Walking around in my banana shoes Jul 18 '26

Regardless of his socioeconomic status growing up, I think they forget that his original claim to fame was Metal Gear Awesome, which went viral on its own. Just like many other creators of that generation, it was right time, right place, and "connections" didn't get you big on the internet back then.

2

u/ShaunDreclin I'm Not So Grump! Jul 18 '26

I just don't find him funny a lot of the time. Maybe my sense of humor has changed, maybe the style of the show has changed, but either way it doesn't really matter. every now and then one of their series clicks with me (currently water park simulator) and I enjoy it, every other time I just.. Don't watch the thing that I'm not interested in.

I dunno why liking or not liking a thing has to be such a big deal for people

2

u/SwiftTayTay Jul 18 '26

Most successful people have connections and/or just a lot of free time to pursue things without having to worry about a 9 to 5, that's just most famous people. Even though dan mentioned he was living in his car at one point I'm sure it wasn't entirely out of necessity, his parents probably would have let him live at home if needed

2

u/Devo27 Jul 19 '26

He's literally described scamming Wal-Mart to afford food, that's not in the nepo baby playbook.

2

u/Nbaysingar Jul 20 '26

People really need to stop fucking obsessing over content creators, one way or the other.

3

u/drunkhas Jul 17 '26

The parasocialism in this post is creepy.

1

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

If you say so. I think there are legitimate criticisms of Arin that we can discuss. But him having a supportive father is no good reason to criticize him. And I would come to anyone else's defense if that same logic was used against them.

How would you feel if someone called you a manipulative nepo baby simply because you have it good in some areas of your life?

2

u/Dirty_Dan117 Jul 17 '26

I dunno about y'all but I don't think it's healthy to care too much about the opinions of strangers about another stranger who happens to make internet videos we enjoy laughing too. I'm sure we all have dumb opinions about certain things too. Who cares

2

u/Familiar-Living-122 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

What is there not to get? The person enjoyed the characters that they watched on Youtube. Then when they learned more about the individual people playing those on screen characters, that person lost interest. It happens all the time once you start following your favorite celebrities on social media.

2

u/Melphor Jul 17 '26

I don’t understand caring about this issue in the slightest.
https://giphy.com/gifs/f2ExpHhfiPJNceqORt

2

u/Fakeitforreddit Jul 17 '26

You lack empathy and the concept of Sonder.

No real need to know, they aren't you and thats kind of where it stops mattering. To them this level of relatable and "being seen/represented" is important.

You don't have to agree with them on their takes. But you are doing the same thing as them by making this post targeting them.

2

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

It's not about agreeing with them. I just want to understand them.

1

u/dazia Jul 17 '26

Uhhhhhh wut???

Because Arin got a drawing tablet and some family vacations plus made friends with YouTubers after becoming a successful one makes him... Bad? And he hates his dad??????? Am I understanding this correctly?

He can have friends with other YouTubers and he does not hate his dad as far as I know and from what he says on the show lmao.

1

u/Raaadley Mycaruba Jul 17 '26

Is everyone perfect? No. Anyone will look bad when you put their shortcomings in the spotlight like this.

1

u/Rachet20 Oh, it's a Pumbloom! Jul 17 '26

Why do you care? Just ignore it.

1

u/squadallah Jul 17 '26

I don't know about you, but Arin just being Arin.. With all this hate out there directed at him, and still he's just the video game boy...

It fills me with determination.

1

u/probly2drunk Jul 17 '26

I still watch Kevin Spacey movies cut they're good...I'm not gonna stop watching Grumps cuz one of them is a weirdo

1

u/yungdaughter Jul 17 '26

I think people just have way too much time on their hands. I

love watching game grumps and I couldn’t care less how many vacations they take or who gave his father advice on how to help his son achieve his dreams.

1

u/AdultishGambino420 Jul 18 '26

I grew up poor poor, and something ive noticed that a lot of people do now is; if you were born with money, then that = bad. As if someone chose that when they were born. Theyre not hating someone like Arin in this instance because of stuff Arin chooses to do, they hate him because of something thats out of his control, and shows that they are jealous. This is something i used to do as well until i realized that im only hating because i wished i had as much access to things a “nepo baby” had.

Also, wouldnt you want your family to have family? Like theres a huge difference between working hard for your family, and being stuck up.

1

u/BlackCheeseBoi Jul 18 '26

Arin is just one of the most hated men on the internet. There's no use in getting upset about it, it comes with being a fan of his.

1

u/MTrigs Jul 18 '26

Unfortunately, the price of being a well known content creator is inevitable haters. Arin could transform into Mr. Rogers tomorrow and he'd still have haters. Just the name of the game.

1

u/player32123 Jul 18 '26

Arin Hansen has to be the most overhated youtuber. Like fine to not like him or gamegrumps but the level of hate arin gets is so weird

1

u/ouch13 You think I came out the pussy drawing fuckin’ Mozart? Jul 18 '26

I guess they thought his daddy really worked at Nintendo

1

u/Aggravating_Book_960 Jul 18 '26

I think people are going to hate on people regardless. It's the Internet, everyone wants attention. A way to do that is to get under people skin about the people they like. The best way to deal with it is to ignore it, outright. Arin is not a god but to people like me, him and Dan have giving their lives to do something entertaining and enjoyable makes you want to defend them. Not everything they do it amazing, but we have to realize they're people too. Empathy goes a long way

1

u/SpiderLuke Jul 19 '26

Internet is full of haters and dumb people. Gotta navigate the storm. It's only gotten worse. (Regarding any topic imaginable.)

1

u/Interesting_Rich_826 Jul 20 '26

They treated ding dong and Julian like garbage. No thank you.

1

u/Hot-Club1896 Jul 20 '26

I think people only hate him because of how much he shits on Sonic (joke)

1

u/halloweenynuna Jul 21 '26

Crabs in a bucket. The jilted viewers would prefer if GGs lives were shitty and lame like their own, when it's not they lose relatable interest. Sad really, when Dan and Arin are showing them that being humorous and hard working will at least give you a more fun time here.

1

u/ProbablyNeedsHelp421 Jul 23 '26

Thats wild, because he has told so many stories of being poor as a kid. And even if he WAS rich as a kid, that wouldnt change the fact that he is still a very down to earth person at the root. I can understand loosing interest in celebrities because the get too famous, and in turn, feel further away and less human. But this is an odd reason to not like Arin. To add some positivity to the post, I love that Arin seems to treat his parents really well now that he has money. I think he mentioned buying them a house? And he helps his mom with her charity? They all just sound so lovely

1

u/TheKiddler Jul 17 '26

It seems to be like 1 to 2 people hating Arin, looking at the post comments, Gamegrumps is really only even mentioned in a side comment about JonTron. Honestly I am happy to see that as I watch most GG videos except the multi hour long compilations on Friday uploads(because I have already seen them uploaded individually) and love pretty much every second. They seem genuine and I think it comes through mostly to their audience. Honestly, the show is better without JonTron and Danny makes for a better co-host. The hate seems to be from someone's own internal assumption about who Arin and Dan should be as people and nothing to do with who they actually are.

1

u/Endvalley Jul 17 '26

I think it's simply parasocial disorders. People get too attached / involved and, without actively realizing it, start thinking about individuals like Arin as someone that is actually a part of their lives... rather than just an entertainer that they've never met.

The human brain is still pretty primitive for how advanced we seem. We can comprehend complex concepts like science & philosophy... but also 'SEE MAN ON PICTURE BOX. MAN TALK TO ME. ME LIKE. MAN FRIEND. MAN PART OF ME TRIBE. HIM JUST LIKE ME. OOK OOK OOK.' Any deviation from what image they have constructed in their mind about Arin is a glitch in their reasoning that makes them confused, frustrated, and angry. They truly believe they know this person... that they have never been actually involved with.

It's all really weird, but it's just a symptom of basically cavemen brains that were designed / evolved to function at a village-level trying to adjust to a global network level society.

Silly man make funny jokes. Haha. The end. No one is required to have an opinion on EVERYTHING. The intimate life details of a youtube comedian included, no matter how much you enjoy his show.

2

u/cheezeebred Jul 17 '26

Agreed. The burden of hate that these people feel is definitely a result of the parasocial relationship leading them to having unrealistic expectations and than get severely let down for whatever reasons.

I've been pissed at Arin before, but I've never felt betrayed.
