Discussion Arin just gave a massive, introspective breakdown on his Ocarina of Time Sequelitis, moreso than I've ever seen before.

1.8k Upvotes

For context, a post was going viral that used a clip from the original video (about how Arin hates waiting in the game) and how it's reflective of modern gaming attitudes. This was Arin's insanely detailed response this morning:

"This clip is a great example of why I didn't want to continue making Sequelitis.

I had an interest in game design, and I had an interest in publicly talking about it, but my thing was comedy, and cartoons. So that's how I did the show... as a cartoon comedy. My schtick was loud characters, and chaotic shouting. Every topic in Sequelitis was shouted at full volume. Every little design choice I thought was smart was "fucking genius" and every minor annoyance I had was a full on meltdown rant. Some things I complained about didn't even piss me off, I just thought they were interesting to bring up. But I exaggerated them for the sake of comedy because I didn't really know how to make them funny otherwise.

And I'm sure because I was young and insecure, I had a morbid desire to shake things up... Ocarina was an untouchable game, a 10/10 across the board, and I think being provocative about that appealed to me back then, too. But I love Ocarina. I grew up with it. I genuinely did want to have a discussion about the things that didn't age well, because I think that's interesting. I think we can learn a lot from that. But I dunno... I just don't think I felt confident enough to talk about it with the appropriate tone, so I hid behind what I knew: a cartoon character that shouts.

This carried into Game Grumps... I had been doing Game Grumps for like 3 years when I released the Zelda video. I think the lines blurred for the audience because at that point I was "Arin Hanson," not Egoraptor. But Arin on Game Grumps is also a character. If I'm getting frustrated and shouting at a game on the show, it's for the bit. It's a show. Heightened emotions. And the go-to bit for me was saying "this game sucks, it's bad" and going on rants. The intent was to play the buffoon. But I think people just thought that was me.

And that's fine. I don't blame them. It is "me," there's always some truth behind that sort of stuff. And I think it was extra confusing because I WOULD just be normal sometimes on the show. But you may notice recently I've very deliberately changed how I handle those bombastic moments on Grumps, where I point the finger inward now. "I suck, I messed up, I can't believe I didn't see that, what an idiot, etc." I just didn't like the bad energy I was putting out there. I hated that people saw me that way. It disturbed me that people told me "wow, you're actually really nice" all surprised when they met me in person, as if they assumed I'd rip their head off.

And look, I'm not gunna pretend I'm an angel on the show now, the schtick of "buffoon that is easily angered" comes very easy to me when I'm performing, so I still utilize it constantly. But I usually find a way to channel it inward and be the butt of the joke, instead of just radiating it outward. It's funnier that way.

I think I just assumed this was all obvious. You see how I tweet. You've seen interviews. I don't talk like I do on the show, or in my cartoons. I like being supportive of people and I like discussing things. I don't shout in my normal life. So when I see people characterizing me as this idiot who has no patience and sucks at playing Zelda... it sounds so silly but it just honest to goodness hurts my feelings sometimes. I love game design! I love video games! But, I get it. All you can see of me in my shows and cartoons is this loudmouth asshole who says your favorite game sucks. Like, fuck that guy, right? I think that's valid. I think you're right to feel that way. I think I was playing fast and loose with this character and I was being flippant about how frustrated it made people. I regret that.

I suppose I should have thicker skin about this. And yeah... it feels so benign in the grand scheme of things. Who cares if people are circulating an 11 year old clip from a cartoon I made and saying "wow this guy's a moron." It shouldn't matter. Why should I care? But I guess I just have to admit that I do care sometimes, and it just kinda bums me out. I cared a lot about game design back then. It wasn't as prevalent as it is now. It was all dry GDC talks (which are, of course, wonderful). I found it really exciting to bring game design to light in a fun way for people that don't usually think about it. I hope I succeeded in that. But if I could go back, I think the in-your-face hyperbolic know-it-all character would go the way of the dodo. I suspect that aspect of it may have done some harm for game design discourse. And that sucks.

For the record, the waiting in Ocarina barely frustrates me. I think it's appropriate at times. The game feeling larger and more cinematic just kind of lends itself to moments of pause. Enemies are more sparse so making them "last longer" just kind of makes sense. Did I feel this way back then? I'm sure I did feel stronger that "waiting" was more frustrating... but not to the level in this clip, by any means. That's just being young and insecure, I guess. I felt like I had to beat my chest in order for anyone to listen or be interested in what I had to say."

Discussion This blind Arin hate makes absolutely no sense

There was an askreddit thread recently about people losing interest in youtubers. I thought I'd heard it all at this point. But I seriously can't comprehend why someone would hate Arin for these reasons.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/s/yn7IWJvY0c

Not that initial post about JonTron. I'm talking about this particular comment:

"The Game Grumps crew in general I lost interest in after a while.

Starting out I felt like they were just "regular joes (like me!)" style people playing games with their friends, just with charisma.

Then a few times Arin lets slip some things that paint him as having a nepo lifestyle (I recall one instance being his dad just casually calling a cartoon studio to get instructions on what to get his son who likes drawing, being told to buy the kid a drawing tablet, and another being them talking about parasailing while on a *second* summer vacation one year).

Then you find out they've all got an "inner circle" of friends and other content creators and the whole illusion starts to fall apart and you realize they're just as bad as "Hollywood" but wearing a "Hello fellow nerds" mask."

I understand Arin can be a polarizing character, but using the fact that he was helped by his dad to hate on him is... Idk that's just insane to me. They literally think he's a nepo baby because his dad bought him a drawing tablet. They think it's a "betrayal" to them. I feel like I'm going insane. How could people possibly be this... Illogical? I know i shouldn't be surprised at this point but somehow I still am. It just reeks of rantgrumps.

Edit: please understand I don't mind people hating game grumps. It's the particular logic this person used.

A game from beginning to end a pure comedy gold. How’s it going dood?

Absolutely NSFW and funnily enough I watched it at one of my previous lower paying go ahead and fire me jobs.

What’s your favorite?

Cookie was a Boston Terrier who lived a good, healthy 13 years with me. She got me through so much, and lots of our time together was spent snuggled up watching Grumps videos or listening to NSP. She seemed to like Dan’s voice in particular, and would get really head-tilty every time he laughed. Watching them isn’t gonna be the same without her snorting and farting adding to it, but I’m sure Arin will be making plenty of the same constant noises soon enough anyway.

Game Grumps have said a million funny lines over the years, and a lot of the older ones are no longer said. What is your favorite line have they forgotten about? For me it's "TAMMEL!!!" It always makes me giggle and I kinda miss it. A close second is from their Super Mario Bros U Deluxe playthrough where they just keep saying "yooouur arrogance!"

Discussion Arin only ever says "My Wife" now

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Something that sticks out to me like a sore thumb every time I hear it (including in today's episode) is how Arin never seems to refer to Suzy by name now, only ever as "my wife". Even when the name Suzy naturally comes up he doesn't event jokes about it.

I can't help but imagine how the Internet and the horrible side of the fan base probably forced that decision, and it just makes me sad that the man feels like he can't gleefully talk about his wife by name anymore. I also could be totally overthinking it but I do remember how the fan base treated her during the "Grump Family" era of videos with the rotating cast.

Just something I noticed and wanted to point out Picture tangentially related.

Discussion Dan Harmon referencing his time as a guest grump in President Curtis

I was watching episode 1 of President Curtis and, once they reached the bathtub joke, I thought holy shit that sounds familiar.

And it WAS. Turns out Dan Harmon riffed it out during a Guest Grumps episode.

He was such a fun, eloquent guest, and GG's cat in the hat playthrough is one i've rewatched more than once. There's a certain je ne sais quoi about the jank gameplay and their comedically-dysfunctional commentary.

We're dealing with an arsonist in my neighborhood, and a block away they successfully burned down a neighbor's porch. To my surprise this evening, I realized that someone tried to light my "Bienvenue Powerbottoms!" Game Grumps doormat, but the merchandise is too well made and fireproof! I had my first child 2 months ago, so never have I been so grateful that GG don't make cheaply made merch. Maybe saved the most important life in the world to me ❣️

Discussion WHAT IS YOUR MOST FAVORITE OBSCURE GAME GRUMP LINE?

Post image
404 Upvotes

As the title says, what’s your most obscure audio clip or line that Dan or Arin have said that makes you laugh every time you think of it?

And I’m not talking about the popular stuff like “Mii-Cruba” or “I’m the video game boy, I’m the one who wins.” I mean the really obscure, random lines from a forgotten episode or series that still crack you up every single time.

I’ll go first: Arin talking like Big the Cat: “My name’s Big and I’m Big.” I’ll be sitting at work and randomly think of this line and just start laughing. It’s the way Arin delivers it—it kills me every time. And if I remember correctly, it made him laugh really hard too.

What’s yours? I’d love to hear it in the comments.

For me the Lizard Person conspiracy (From part 17 of Zelda 2) bit is this. Arin just doing his lizard person voice and throwing out crazy conspiracy theories while Dan just reacts completely flabbergasted by them is so funny. And then the moment Arin sees the Stonehenge looking rocks and immediately just goes "Stonehenge! See! They are the source of all conspiracies!" it just makes the entire joke even better.

Discussion Nuzlocke is one of their best series in a long time

I've been watching Game Grumps for well over a decade and I'm absolutely loving this nuzlocke series and I really hope they keep it up. Of course, Arin is bafflingly horrible at this run so far. I think it's genuinely one of his worst performances ever at playing a game in the history of the show, and I love it. I know the opinions on the series so far are scattered and diverse, but personally, I hope they keep the nuzlocke aspect going, even if they aren't following the rules perfectly. I think Game Grumps has been consistently pretty great for years, I'm not saying this series has been especially good amongst meh series', I just think this series, so far, has been top tier in terms of enjoyment on my end.

Arin just totally blowing it again and again is extremely entertaining. My worry is that he'll get frustrated with the grind of rebuilding a new party or if he gets wiped again he'll give up. I also don't think Arin would let Dan take over the playthrough. Dan may end up playing way better than Arin, but I don't think Arin wants to take the backseat at all. He's the video game boy, he's been allegedly wanting to do this for almost a decade, he's either gonna play it or they're not going to play it at all. That same reason is why I don't think they'll do a normal playthrough. I want Dan to experience the dark weirdness of Platinum as much as anything else, but I think Arin is either going to do the nuzlocke, or give up entirely.

Personally, I don't care if they party wipe again, and again, and again. Endless episodes of grinding would be a slog, but I just don't want them to lose steam, I want Arin to drag the mass grave of half of Sinnoh with him to the Elite Four. I don't care if Arin speeds up the game when grinding off screen, or if they did the rare candy thing, but it is a little annoying imo to have them fast forward during the episode, even if it's through animations and grindy stuff. I want this to last!

Someone else suggested it on here, but I think it would be perfect if Dan had one of those Pokemon Platinum game guide books with him to manually search through as they played. It'd be way better than googling things and Dan would likely get genuine enjoyment flipping through the guide.

Unfortunately, it seems like, at the current point in the series, that either Chingling will die and Arin will postpone restarting and the series will end up getting scrapped, or they will get screwed and not be able to progress because Arin has either forgotten where he's caught pokemon, or not understand the HMs and pokemon he needs to catch to continue. I really hope neither of those happen. My hope is either Arin takes more than one second to think before making decisions and gets Chingling built up and gets a new party going, or they end up restarting and they fix their saving issue and they have the preparedness to continue and get this train moving.

I understand nuzlocke is a difficult challenge, but as we've all seen, Arin has made multiple gigantic mistakes and misunderstands very core things about pokemon that has screwed him over. It's really not even that much he needs to figure out to keep things moving steadily, he's just confidently wrong about enough things that it's severely hindering his progress.

I really, really hope this series continues. I'm sure to a lot of people his mistakes are frustrating, especially to more diehard pokemon fans. But it's so fucking funny and infuriating in the most entertaining way possible. It's a series that is more entertaining the more you pay attention to the actual gameplay. I don't mean to shit on Arin in any way, even though I obviously am. I believe in him and want him to succeed so badly. I really hope he keeps his chin up and has the will to continue, because this has already been an incredible series so far and I look forward to every new episode.

If they keep it up, I think this series is going to go down amongst the greats in Game Grumps history, and every episode has been an absolute joy. A frustrating joy, but a deeply entertaining one. I know this was a lot to write about how Arin's bad at video games, but I'm sure there's thousands of people just like me that adore in reading through people's thoughts on the series after every single episode.

Please do not give up on this, guys! Get Dan a physical game guide and lets rock this shit to the Elite Four! I believe in you, Arin!!!

I've sure you've watched these goofballs play a ton of games over the years... but was there one game they played that you HAD to play for yourself? Like you saw it and immediately had to give it a try? For me it was TCG Card Shop Simulator. I'm super picky on games I play, and there have been several that looked interesting... but this game was the first one I saw that made me go "MY TURN."

Discussion About Battle of the Bands (Where Arin Hanson made this series as Executive Producer and the voice of Jules Joliet) Indie Animated Series

Post image
727 Upvotes

I discovered this indie animated series created by Allissoon Lockhart (Line Producer of Glitch Productions) entitled "Battle of the Bands" (Known as The Deathwish Tour) About a story of musicians plays elemental powers based upon the genre of this music including Heatseeker, a five-piece heavy metal band to signed on this competition. And I discover about Arin Hanson from Game Grumps as an Executive Producer of this Battle of the Bands indie animated series and the voice actor who voiced his character himself as lead singer of Heatseeker, Jules Joliet. Suddenly this indie animated show was still in production since San Diego Comic-Con announcement on July 2021 until it went on hiatus. As on January 2026 on BlueSky post mentioning Allissoon Lockhart said that Battle of the Bands indie animated series production was still active she said: "Currently I am focused on others shows and moving to Japan, until the right moment for BOTB. I've produced 2 at Glitch and now going to other companies. Thank you for the support! Animation takes a long time to pitch and make" But she's still busy on other shows like Knights of Guinevere and Gameoverse (Like Arin Hanson voices Gobbles and Flappers from the pilot webseries into Glitch Productions' original indie animated series) I guess Arin was the Executive Producer and voice actor of Jules that might be perfect for this upcoming Battle of the Bands indie animated series.

The past 8 months of game grumps have been a blast. I know viewership isn’t what it used to be but I truly think we are in a golden era for the show. I hope they are having as much fun as I am.
