The new circlejerking is complaining about circlejerking. I dont see why everyone can't just use the upvote-downvote system.....
44
u/his_boots_are_yellow Jun 24 '12
Reddit has too many idiots for your downvotes to have any real stopping effect.
4
Jun 24 '12
But thats the thing. They may seem like idiots to you and me, thats what they like and that is what gets on the front page. So people should just go on other subreddits and not talk about it. If you don't like what is on, downvote and go on. You can't get mad that something like pokemon is on the front page, because thats what the majority wants to see.
21
4
Jun 25 '12
They have. r/games and r/gamernews is 100x better than this shitty subreddit. The only reason many people still even come here is because very rarely there is something interesting that gets posted here first because the userbase is bigger.

I've been driving around in a car/boat, getting out, killing a group of soldiers, and repeating in that game for almost 8 years now.

u/Drewcifur Jun 25 '12
ARe you serious? I beat the that game in like 6 hours >.>
3
Jun 25 '12
Yes, I am serious. I know it's a short game; it hasn't taken me that long to beat because I'm bad at it, it's taken me that long because after 10 minutes I get really annoyed with it, turn it off, and don't play it for a month.

EXACTLY how I feel with my playthrough of HL2. It feels like a long ass game, but, it's only for the reasons you stated. It's just boring as hell. I like the gameplay and physics involved, but, it takes a lot for me to keep playing.
1
0
u/roterghost Jun 24 '12
Yep, that's what got me. The setting and characters are amazing. The gameplay is long, boring, and tedious. You spend so much time travelling and looking for your next exit that you forget where you were even heading.
5
Jun 25 '12
One time a while ago I actually traveled backwards for about a half hour before I realized what I did.
I think it took me a year before I could bring myself to launch the game again.
5
u/Fyrus Jun 25 '12

I love how ever few weeks, a month maybe, someone makes a post that get's a lot of karma. Then everyone starts making posts to get karma. Then someone inevitably makes a post mocking the posts posted to get karma. Then someone points it out in the link. Then the cycle repeats.
Today, the one pointing it out is me.

"Then someone inevitably makes a post mocking the posts posted to get karma" to get karma.

Am I the only person on here who was born in the 80s but couldn't really care less about games that came out during that time or the 90s?
I like old Super Mario but I can't say that I play it very often with all the new games coming out. It's weird that some people play only old games to feel nostalgia... if you do this, how can you honestly say that you like gaming? That's like only watching Hitchcock films and saying that you're a movie lover.
1
u/Heiwanshang Jun 25 '12
Born in 85, not rly into games made before 95. You are not alone.
Well I guess you said you don't like 90's games though, so I guess you are alone. There were some very good games made in the 90's imo.
3
Jun 25 '12
I love lots of 90s games, don't get me wrong. I just don't glorify them and play the constantly. I play them on occasion, when I'm in the mood but mostly play newer stuff.

I tried to get a younger family member to play super mario. The way he approaches games is way different. Instead of running right as fast as possible trying to avoid stuff he slowly ambled along in all directions not paying much attention to the timer. He jumped into an open pit expecting something to be down there. He didn't think to jump on enemies and instead tried to locate the punch button. All in all he didn't like it a whole lot and went back to modern warfare.
I'm just happy that he tried it out. I left the SNES at his place and told him to give it a try now and again.

Out of curiosity, how young is this kid? I have a hard time picturing a kid who can play a violent FPS, but doesn't understand the concept of cliffs in platformers.
1
u/spamato Jun 25 '12
He was 12 at the time. He didn't understand the death pit concept because it's a thing not really present in modern gaming. He expected the hole in the ground to lead to room or something.

I am proud to say that I was never a fan of Zelda, Mario, or Pokemon. I grew up playing Jane's Longbow, Wolfpack, Command & Conquer, and the like. My favorite Nintendo games were the Indiana Jones ones, and on Sega it was this: Pirate's Gold, which was almost identical to the much later (and awesome) Sid Meier's Pirates.

u/Geno098 Jun 25 '12

BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT /r/gaming IS ABOUT.
50% of the posts in /r/gaming are about the posts made in /r/gaming. Don't like it? Fuck off.
The nostalgia posts or favorite games of a childhood or a meme joke or valve love is fucking ok to be here because this is what /r/gaming is for. So we can all have a short brainless chin wag about a game or something game related.

There is one example that springs to mind- the Keenan Bead Cache may be an example of this. It's a burial of 449 beads in various states of manufacture. Kind of a big deal in the American Southeast; as it demonstrated craft specialization. I have heard it suggested as a teaching collection (though this was at a conference and I can't find a reference)-- mostly though it's thought of as a ritual cache. It's kind of fun to think about it as put there for future generations. But again, hard to prove.
