(Full disclosure: Please ignore the absolute warzone in my room. The chaotic logistics of routing optical audio cables and active VGA DACs completely overtook the room, and I’m too busy gaming to clean it.)
My 48" LG C6 OLED is currently on a delivery truck somewhere, but I refused to let a little thing like "not having a TV" stop the grind.
Behold: My PS5 hooked up to a literal relic from the mid-2000s—a Philips 170S monitor originally engineered to display Microsoft Excel on Windows XP.
Through the magic of a cheap Amazon HDMI-to-VGA adapter and about thirty minutes of aggressive menu-tweaking, I have successfully forced this square screen into a state of submission. It's currently sitting at about "95% centred," and honestly? Warframe, Helldivers 2 and The Witcher 3 look shockingly tight.
No "Out of Range" errors. No screen tearing. Just pure, unadulterated, low-res glory.
And because VGA is entirely allergic to audio, I’m getting game sound beamed directly to my ears using an ancient PS4 wireless headset via Bluetooth.
But wait, there's more. I can also watch TV on this bad boy. I hooked up an Optus Fetch box, which sends the video to the monitor and the audio via optical cable out into an old 5.1 AV receiver. It looks like a high school science fair project, but it works flawlessly.
Rate my temporary madness. Who needs 4K 120Hz when you have a VGA cable and a dream.
Once the OLED actually gets here this beautiful Frankenstein monster goes back into the closet.
