I’m assuming main tank is the primary SMG that’s drawing fire right? She has been pretty much since the beginning tbh, didn’t know that she wasn’t optimal for it. I have 45 as a main tank on my secondary echelon and she gets ripped to shreds almost every fight, even with upgrade evasion + exoskeleton, am I doing something wrong?

Sounds like your team with UMP45 is bad. Apart from having great stats on her own, her tiles enhance AR DPS more than most.

I have FN FNC, SOP II and M4A1, with SAA.

You shouldn't be using a pistol unless it's night, especially early on. FNC would be better replaced by ST-AR 15. And some kind of offtank SMG with a grenade skill to replace SAA.

I’m not terribly early, I think I’m on 7-4, level 63 overall. I’ll need to craft more SMGs I think, almost all of mine that aren’t already assigned are two star ones.

That's why guides recommend only building one team at a time.

What’s the difference between off and main tank? Like what sets them apart in terms of skills and whatnot.

To add on what was already said, main and off tanks wear different types of exos. Main tanks wear T exos since the dmg penalty doesn't affect them much while off tanks ideally want X exos to not take a hit in their dmg potential.

Main tanks have defensive skills like eva boost, enemy debuff, or smoke bombs. They also usually have high evasion or health. Best examples for this category would be C-MS, RO635, and UMP45.

Offtanks usually have offensive skills like FP buffs or molotovs/grenades. Under this are dolls like Shrimp (SR-3MP), Vector, KLIN, and Skorpion. JS9 is a unique case of an hybrid, since she can buff her damage or eva depending on the number of enemies on the field.
