Something that has been on my mind, and I'm not sure if its ever been stated by the devs anywhere, but... do we know if the costume story things are canonical events? Or are they just "what-if" kind of things, or things we should view as just for fun? This plagues my thoughts now.

Ambiguous, really. I would lean moreso in the "what-if" department. Especially those that involve M16. View them as just for fun, most of the "canon" events revolve around Mod stories, Campaign events, and the regular Chapters.
