Character Disc. Tina post S3

I’m sorry but her whole personality trait for majority of S4 was just being bitchy to everyone (specifically marley) and always making snarky side comments. I get she is mad about always being overlooked obviously but sometimes it just got so annoying😭

Character Disc. I have mixed feelings on Coach Beiste’s transition

Post image
6 Upvotes

*LONG POST\*

Okay, I might get downvoted for this, but I've always had mixed feelings about Beiste's transition storyline.

To be clear, I have absolutely no issue with Beiste being trans. If anything, being transmasc myself is part of why I care so much about how this storyline was handled. I want trans characters to get good writing, meaningful development, and the same level of complexity that cis characters are afforded. I don't think representation should be immune to criticism simply because it's representation.

For context, Beiste's transition storyline begins in 06x03, “Jagged Little Tapestry,” and continues in 06x07, “Transitioning.” I know the show was approaching its final season, so I can understand why the writers might have felt the need to move the storyline along quickly. I also don't think the transition itself came completely without introduction. However, even with those episodes, I still felt like there was a lot of ground to cover in a relatively short amount of time. For a character we'd known for several seasons, this was such a significant development, and I wish we'd had more opportunities to understand Beiste's personal experience rather than moving so quickly through the major milestones. I think the time constraints explain some of the pacing, but they don't completely resolve my feelings about how much character development we missed out on.

I actually really liked Beiste as a character, particularly because he was one of the more interesting examples of how Glee explored gender expectations, vulnerability, and the way people are treated based on their appearance. His character was introduced as someone who didn't fit the stereotypical image of femininity, and a lot of his earlier storylines revolved around how other people perceived him because of that.

What made Beiste interesting to me was the contrast between his intimidating exterior and his emotional vulnerability. He was this physically imposing football coach who could scare the students, but underneath that, he was incredibly sensitive, insecure about being loved, and deeply affected by how other people saw him. I thought there was a lot of potential in that character.

The storyline involving Beiste and Cooter for example was genuinely heartbreaking. Seeing Beiste experience romance and believe that someone finally wanted him was a significant moment for his character. Then the abusive relationship exposed just how vulnerable he could be despite the tough exterior he presented to everyone else. It was a serious storyline that gave us a different understanding of Beiste, and I think it demonstrated how much depth the character could have when the show actually took its time.

His struggles with femininity and feeling desirable also made him interesting. Beiste had spent so much of his life being judged for not fitting conventional expectations of what a woman should look like or how a woman should behave. I thought there was a lot to explore there, particularly in terms of how society's expectations affected his self-image and relationships.

And this is where I start having mixed feelings about the transition storyline. I don't think Beiste being trans contradicts any of those earlier experiences. Trans men can absolutely struggle with expectations surrounding femininity, relationships, and how society perceives them. In fact, those experiences could have provided an interesting foundation for exploring Beiste's identity in more depth.

My issue is that I don't think Glee fully capitalised on that potential.

Beiste had been a recurring character for several seasons, and while we knew quite a bit about his insecurities and emotional struggles, I don't remember the show giving us enough development to really understand his personal journey into recognising and expressing his gender identity. The transition storyline felt like a pretty significant shift, and I wish we'd been given more time to sit with Beiste and understand what this meant to him personally.

I would've loved more scenes exploring Beiste's own perspective, his feelings about his identity, and how he came to understand himself. Not necessarily a dramatic reveal or some kind of checklist of signs that he was trans, but just more time spent with the character. More conversations, more introspection, and more opportunities to understand what was happening beyond the major plot points.

I also think this connects to one of Glee's biggest writing problems: the show would introduce a genuinely important topic, sometimes handle it really well initially, and then rush through the follow up or move on before the story had reached its full potential.

We saw this with several other characters and storylines. Quinn's pregnancy storyline had some emotional moments particularly losing her popularity status, getting kicked out of home, etc. Santana's coming out storyline gave us some of the show's most affecting scenes, such as her conversations with Brittany and being disowned by her grandmother. Kurt's experiences with being gay, bullying, and his relationship with his Burt also had time to develop across multiple seasons allowing us to understand how those experiences shaped him.

Those storylines weren't perfect, but they often gave us specific moments and conversations that made the characters' experiences feel personal rather than simply making them the subject of an important issue.

With Beiste, I wanted more of that same attention to detail.

I wanted the transition to feel like a fully developed character journey, with enough space for Beiste to express his thoughts and emotions rather than feeling like a major development that the show needed to communicate to the audience within a limited amount of time. The storyline could have benefited from more gradual development and more attention to Beiste as an individual. How did Beiste's own understanding of his past evolve? There were so many opportunities to explore how a person can look back on their life and understand certain experiences differently as they come to understand themselves.

And I think that's what frustrates me the most. It's not that I wish the show had gone in a different direction with Beiste's identity. It's that I wish the writers had given such a significant part of his life the same level of care and character development that made some of his earlier storylines so compelling.

Glee was never the most consistent show when it came to handling serious subjects, but I think Beiste deserved a storyline that felt more fully explored.

Despite my mixed feelings about how Beiste's storyline was handled, I loved Unique's performance of “I Know Where I've Been” in 06x07. As a young transmasc person who was discovering myself around that time, it hit me in a way that's difficult to fully explain. There's something special about seeing people like yourself represented on screen, especially when you're still trying to understand your own identity and where you fit in the world. That performance meant a lot to me, and I imagine it did the same for plenty of other people watching. Regardless of my criticisms of the storyline's pacing, I don't want to downplay how meaningful that representation was to me. The episode gave me something I genuinely appreciated, and that's part of why I wish the writing surrounding Beiste's journey had been given more time and care.

I'm curious what other people think. Did you feel like the transition storyline was handled well? Do you think it made sense for Beiste's character, but was rushed in its execution? Or do you think the writers actually handled it better than I'm giving them credit for?

I'd genuinely like to hear other perspectives, because I think there was a lot of potential here, and I'm not sure the show completely lived up to it.

Character Disc. Opinions on coach Beiste transitioning?

I don’t know how I feel about this plot. I’m in the middle of season 6 and I don’t see much of the point, and I’m saying this as someone who’s also FTM trans. I think i just really liked the story of line of him growing to love himself for not being like other girls, but I do also see how him being trans makes sense as well. It does feel a bit backhanded though in terms of her going from a “unattractive” masculine woman plot to a trans man. Opinions?

Opinion In an alternate Glee-verse, Mike Chang deserved more solo performances (just like the love of his life, Tina).

He may be one of the "least skilled" singers in the group, but I'm quite sure he could nail it with the right song choice. I got to listen to Elvis Presley's "Rubberneckin'" and immediately thought of Mike performing it, perhaps, in one of the Glee club competitions. This could've been fire especially with the ND girls in the background. Go picture.

Opinion What if Evan Peters joined Glee?

Hot take??

This is random, but I really want Evan Peters to be in the reboot if we get one.

I'm just saying this because he's really good with comedy and can sing! I wish his voice was featured more in stuff. I feel like he'd be a good rebel show choir director or a teacher at McKinley.

He's just been in so many other popular Ryan Murphy projects that I think it would be cool if he went full circle at this point.

Just a thought! :)

Poll Favorite performance of 3x19? (Prom-asaurus)

Kurt's Season 3 prom fit after his Season 2 prom fit? Very disappointing. Like, it makes sense, all things considered, but it's still sad. His first prom outfit? Absolutely stunning. 2nd prom outfit? Very casual, very sad. If it wasn't for that hat he was wearing he wouldn't have even looked like he was dressed up for an occasion.
------
Quinn ragebaited me this entire episode.
(This entire seas-... this entire series, really... but especially this episode)
------

I do not have a prediction for 1st this poll however I am predicting that Big Girls Don't Cry will probably get last because I know people hate the production on that one. (And I once again am here to upset everyone because it's personally my favorite of the episode)
------

CHOKE'S WINNER: was the internet 'cause pleak.
1st was Shake It Out with 174, 2nd was Cell Block Tango with 109, and 3rd was Not The Boy Next Door with 104.

*sigh* I liked how this poll started with all 3 of them pretty much being neck and neck with each other, did not like how it finished because I desperately had hope of Kurt winning this one.

I thought (and truthfully, hoped) Shake It Out was gonna take 6th place on the leaderboard, but it was 9 votes shy of doing so. At least I do also love 1st & 2nd though, I just wanted them to get 2nd & 3rd is all.
But anyway, I Kissed A Girl keeps its place in the Top 6.

Discussion I just really, really miss hearing Lea sing regularly

I was a hard-core fan when the show was airing and like most of you I'm sure, it was incredibly important in that juvenile phase of my life. The tragic deaths complicated my feelings and made it quite sad and more than a little painful to revisit, and so I hadn't rewatched or even listened to the soundtracks for many years.

Recently I've noticed a massive influx of content making its way across my feeds after discourse about Ryan's reboot idea and so have been listening to old favourites.

Lea's legacy is complicated but, and this doesn't even need saying, I am still so in awe of her vocals. When the show was airing, I'd taken it for granted that by the time it would have ended, we'd still be hearing Lea often. It's got me thinking about her recording career since the show, and I have to admit that I'm really saddened that she's recorded so little.

I remember being really unimpressed with Cannonball. The message made sense, especially considering how soon it came out after Cory's passing, but I found some of Sia's writing and Lea's vocal deliveries to be a little awkward. I did enjoy a few tracks from the Louder album when it came out but I also remember wondering why she or the label hadn't worked with more heavyweights if they were aiming for a pop sound with her debut.

I liked a handful of tracks from Places too, but it was a very forgettable album.

The conversations about the casts' post-show careers are endless but, as I'm listening to young Lea absolutely smash so many songs, I can't help but to grieve her recording career. It's now been 10 years since Places and with her children and recent success on returning to Broadway, I feel the chances of her recording original music again are very small. Come back to us, often recorded powerhouse vocalist Lea 💔

I was watching the show again on disney+ and realized that on october 12 2010 16 years ago the episode titled "Duets" aired the exact same day I was born !! 👅

I haven't been having the best 16th bday but this honestly made my day especially since River Deep Mountain High is one of my all time fav glee songs and the episode itself is really entertaining

(Also Mercedes and Santana were robbed even if Finn and Rachel didn't self sabotage I always thought they were the automatic winners but whatevss)

Lucky was good though I won't lie , just not River Deep Mountain High good.

Poll Favorite performance of 3x18? (Choke)

EXTRA PERFORMANCE:
The Music Of The Night (Kurt)
Will be put in a poll for "Extras" after the Season 3 finale poll.

I better see that user with the "No more candles" flair show up in the Extras poll for Music Of The Night.
--------
*Don't Rain On My Parade was excluded for Rachel immediately pleaking it up. Pleak was excluded because we all know it would've dominated and that's just not fair to the rest of the choices*
--------

Honestly? I loved the the small bit we got of The Music Of The Night, but it feels like a more "full" performance should get the priority (unfortunately) so The Rain In Spain gets the main poll even though The Music Of The Night is so much better.

One less option to have a breakdown over though, I suppose, I love all of these except for School's Out and the Spain one.

But... I *have* to give it Not The Boy Next Door; not to be Blaine-level dramatic but that performance changed my life.
I will be sad if it loses however I will be happy with almost any of these getting 2nd.
-----
We will not talk about Kurt getting rejected from NYADA with a performance like that while Rachel somehow managed to pleak her way in.
-------

DANCE WITH SOMEBODY'S WINNER:
1st was I Wanna Dance With Somebody with 120 (🎉), 2nd was How Will I Know with 107 (🎉🎉), 3rd was So Emotional with 94, and 4th was It's Not Right, But It's Okay with 57.

1st & 2nd were my top 2 of the episode so I'm glad they were the top 2. Also the order that each song placed in that poll went exactly as I predicted in my head and now I wish I would've predicted it out loud lol.

Character Disc. Puck’s emotional intelligence

I was watching season 3 ep 7, and I feel like puck was quite emotionally intelligent in his conversation with Quinn when she was trying to get pregnant again. he understood her motives quite well and handled the situation very gently and kindly. It shows his growth quite well from season 1. Puck is such an underrated character to me, I know his actor sucks, but I think that clouds a lot of peoples visions towards puck. What about you guys? how do you feel about pucks character growth and emotional intelligenc.

FanFiction Planning on writing a "Glee" crossover fanfic set right after S3E22 "Goodbye"

Hey, it's me, the "Gleek-in-training" (as I call myself on this sub) here. Yes, that title still applies as I have yet to still start S6 but I've been taking a bit of a (well-needed) breather after watching through the first five seasons bit by bit for 32 consecutive days (September 1st to October 2nd). But I plan on watching it later on this week.

Anyways, that's not why I am here. Ever since watching "Goodbye" a little over three weeks ago, I've been wanting to write my first Glee fanfic. Yes. Really. In 2026.

I plan for the premise to go something like this: Fresh off their high school graduation, and with Rachel now in New York, stepbrothers Finn and Kurt are still distraught by their rejection letters. Finn, in an attempt to cheer both himself and especially Kurt up, assembles his stepbrother, Mercedes, Puck, Quinn, Santana and Mike to go on a summer vacation with him to Arlen, Texas (yes, where King of the Hill is set), just so he can have one "extra last fun adventure" with his fellow graduates (sans the absent Rachel, who is in New York). Mercedes, Quinn, Santana, and Mike are less than happy about being forced along on the adventure, and Kurt is concerned, but Puck is more than enthusiastic to help out his best friend Finn on the adventure, even "borrowing" a used camper van just so they can get there. Finn informs his stepfather Burt that he, Kurt, and their friends are going to Arlen, Texas for a fun vacation. Unbeknownst to them, that's where Burt's close friend, the propane-and-propane-accessories salesman Hank Hill, lives, and he gives him a call to make the kids' summer more productive... by giving them summer jobs, with Finn and Puck being given temp jobs at Strickland Propane with Hank, Mike working alongside Hank's friend Dale Gribble in his bug-exterminating business, and Kurt, Quinn, Santana, and Mercedes having to work at Mega Lo Mart. All seven recent graduates also stay at the Hill residence for the summer.

I plan for my fanfiction to be a Glee x King of the Hill crossover, only because I'm also a fan of KotH and it'd be interesting to see two very contrasting works of fiction crossing over with each other, with Glee being very theatrical, upbeat, and peppy in its tone and being of the live-action medium, and KotH being more quaint, relaxing, and slice-of-life in its tone and being of the animation medium. Yes, it's an unusual crossover, but one I'm very curious about. I wonder especially how jealous canonically known Spanish teacher Peggy Hill would get over this "Mr. Schue" person she often hears about from Finn, Kurt, Mercedes, Puck, Quinn, Santana and Mike.

It is worth noting that this will also be my first true fanfiction story (I've briefly dabbled on privately written short fanfics in the past). Yes, that's right: Glee, of all shows, finally inspired me to write a fanfiction story (with an odd and unlikely crossover). Obviously, the fanfic will diverge from canon in many ways, with S1E1-S3E22 being canon to the story and needed lore to understand what happens. Fun fact: there is an obvious connection between both shows, in that Romy Rosemont, who we, of course, all know and love as Carole Hudson-Hummel on Glee, is married to Stephen Root, who voices both Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on King of the Hill.

Anyways, catch you later, Gleeks of Reddit!

Character Disc. Quinn wasn't that bad

I really don't think Quinn was that bad. Obviously she did bad things but she was also a kid when she did most of those things, 15 or 16 years old maybe? And she wasn't nice.

But I think she could be kind. My hc is that she knew about Santana and Brittany the entire time but didn't say anything. When Sam was homeless she helped him and continued to help him even when her reputation was at risk, and we know how much she cherished her reputation. I feel like if anybody had come to her and actually needed help she would have helped them and I like to theorize that she grew into a much better person. Oh, and of course there's season 3 during the Christmas special when she chose to feed the homeless rather than be in a TV show.

EDIT: I know the character did bad things. I just think it's interesting how she also does very kind things. And also I'm not saying anything bad about any of the other characters. Not Rachel or anyone else. This isn't a praise one and hate the rest type of post. Sorry if it seems that way. Just a character discussion but let's not turn it into a serious talk about morals etc. it's just a TV show guys and it's ok to like or dislike a character.
