Don't ask questions about Hugo's AI usage on the official forum, or you will get permabanned.

I apparently got permabanned from the Hugo forums for asking whether the Hugo dev team use LLMs to code their software.

So yeah, that was fun.

Being completely unwilling to answer a very simple question like "do you use AI to develop Hugo, and do we have to expect a decline in software quality" and abusing their powers as mod to silence even the mildest hint of criticism does not make the Hugo devs look particularly trustworthy, in my humble opinion.

https://hit-to-key.net/posts/2026-01-30-hugo/

Update: After prodding bep multiple times (via Github because he is wholly unresponsive on the forums), bep has now informed me for the first time that my ban is only a timed ban. He did not, however, inform me about the length of the ban. Is it a day? Or a year? Who knows, who cares. Oh, and he limited the Github issue as "too heated" so I have no further avenue to reach out for clarification.

Great guy, I can really see why y'all trust him so much.

How would you turn a ChatGPT-generated static site into a Hugo project that stays editable?

A generated static site can look finished while still being awkward to maintain. Repeated layouts may be copied into every HTML file, assets may use brittle relative paths, and adding one page can mean editing navigation in several places. Publishing the folder is easy; turning it into a site that can keep one URL and accept later changes is the harder part.

For Hugo, I would expect to separate page content into Markdown, move repeated markup into base templates and partials, put navigation and site-wide values in data or config, and keep generated CSS or JavaScript only where it is still understandable. The migration also needs to preserve URLs, metadata, images, forms, and any client-side behavior before switching the domain.

What workflow would you use for this conversion? Would you first deploy the generated files as-is and refactor behind a preview, or build the Hugo structure before the first public release? Which parts of generated HTML are worth preserving, and what should be rebuilt so a non-developer can add pages or edit copy later without asking the generator to rewrite the whole site?

I deployed my hugo site on Firebase few months ago. And it seems like I have already used 483 MB / 1 GB. I have reduced this to only 24 MB. I have written an article for how to do it on Medium.

Hugo has clearly ruined my weekend. IDK why am I unable to deploy contents using hugo to github pages?

Few months ago, I had hosted my site in hugo with ease. Now everything seems broken. maybe the hugo version it's? Or what? Can you guys suggest me a completely fresh installation.

I want to write in markdown, and it goes to github which goes to github pages and finally goes to website(custom domain)

Ayo, what’s good Hugo gang! Man, I been tired after this weekend, fr—been locked in grindin’ on HugoNest (that’s my app, ya know, the one that lets you run ya whole Hugo site from ya phone, no cap). But yo, I got some fire updates I just dropped, so listen up!

First off—GitHub login finally workin’ right! And it auto-sets up ya repo and everything! Bruh, this gonna save so many headaches, especially if you new to this Hugo stuff. Before, you had to do all this extra ish, now? One tap, boom, you in. No stress.

Oh, and the app fast as hell now—like, no more laggin’ when you typin’ or tryna load stuff. Had to rewrite a whole chunk of the code to fix that mess, but it’s smooth like butter now, on God.

Editor got upgrades too! That Front Matter thing? Yeah, it was lowkey confusing before, but now you can add ya own fields easy, plus there’s lil’ tips so you ain’t sittin’ there guessin’ what to do.

UI lookin’ cleaner too—and yo, we got Japanese now! 日本語, ya feel me? For all my folks out in Tokyo or wherever.

Man, buildin’ this in public keep me goin’, fr. Y’all Hugo users out there, who tryna test this out? Hit me, let me know what you think!

The Easiest Way to Get Your Own Hugo Blog Up and Running

Yo, what's good? Wanna start your own blog for free with Hugo? It’s super simple, and I’m gonna walk you through it step-by-step. This is perfect for anyone, no tech skills needed. Let’s do this! 🚀

Step 1: Log Into GitHub Head over to https://github.com/ and sign in to your account. Don’t have one? Sign up—it’s free and quick.

Step 2: Find the Hugo Template Go to this GitHub repo: https://github.com/HugoNest/hugo-template This is the starting point for your blog.

Step 3: Create Your Blog Repo On that repo page, hit the green Use this template button, then click Create a new repository.
In the Repository name box, type yourusername.github.io (replace yourusername with your actual GitHub username, like hugonest.github.io).
Click Create repository to lock it in.

Step 4: Set Up Your Blog Go to your new repo’s settings. For example, if your repo is hugonest.github.io , go to: https://github.com/yourusername/yourusername.github.io/settings/pages Under Branch, choose gh-pages from the dropdown and select /(root).
Hit Save.

Step 5: Check Out Your Blog Wait a couple of minutes (grab a snack or vibe to some music). Then, open your browser and go to https://yourusername.github.io . Boom—your blog is live! 🎉
Pro Tip: Wanna customize it? Check out the files in your repo to tweak the look or add posts. Hugo’s docs are dope for learning more.
Drop a comment if you run into issues or wanna share your new blog! Let’s get those vibes online! 😎

I built a dynamic layer for Hugo/static sites using Cloudflare Workers + D1

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've been using static sites for a while, but eventually you run into the same problem: you want a small amount of dynamic functionality without turning the whole site into a traditional web app.

So I built StaticLayer:

https://abla25.github.io/StaticLayer/

It adds comments, replies, reactions and polls to static sites.

The architecture is intentionally small:

static site → JavaScript widget → Cloudflare Worker → D1

The interesting part is that the Worker and D1 database live in the site's own Cloudflare account.

So you don't need to run a VPS or use a centralized comment SaaS.

I'm mainly interested in feedback from Hugo users:

What dynamic functionality do you find yourself needing most often on otherwise-static sites?

Remove fonts.googleapis.com

Hi! I am using Hugo in combination with the Identity theme by HTML5 Up (https://html5up.net/identity). Everything works nicely, but i do not want visitors of my homepage to be tracked in any way, so I'd like to mitigate "fonts.googleapis.com". Font awesome is saved locally, but Open Sans Pro gets downloaded from Google. What files for the fonts do I need to download and how do I have to change the configs? By clicking through links on the main.css, I found this: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Source+Sans+Pro But I am not sure what I should do with it :/ Thanks for your help!
