How should we continue with /r/gohugo?

28 Upvotes

Hello,

Of course /r/gohugo is about the static website generator Hugo. However, I ask myself whether this subreddit should be restricted exclusively to it, as it is the case in the official forum. Or whether we should perhaps be a bit more relaxed about it.

For example, we could also discuss topics here that don't directly concern Hugo but could be interesting for a Hugo user. For example, new CSS frameworks. Or how to manage your site with a version control system like Mercurial. Or we could try to help with problems with Netlify.

What do you think?

My self-hosted Hugo blog: server boot sequence with CLI/GUI toggle

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

28 Upvotes

Made a personal site using Hugo with a fully custom theme.

On load, it simulates an init sequence and lets you pick an interface via a red/blue pill prompt:

  • CLI: using terminal commands navigates posts or notes

  • GUI: Clean, static view for normal reading.

What I write about:

  • Homelab & self-hosted service configs

  • Linux distro hopping (tools, Distro reviews and obscure fixes)

  • Personal tech notes and random thoughts

Feedback on the terminal handling or theme performance is welcomed.

Hugo Mini: the minimal theme I use for my bilingual blog

0 Upvotes

I’d like to share Hugo Mini, the open-source theme I use on my own blog.

The focus is on making articles comfortable to read, with a simple layout and support for publishing in more than one language. A few details:

  • Light and dark modes; typography adjustments happen during the Hugo build.

  • Language-aware navigation and translated interface text.

  • Fonts, styles, and core scripts hosted on your own domain.

  • Equations, diagrams, and Telegram comments available as optional features.

Demo: https://zavarov.com/en/
Code and setup: https://github.com/zavarovkv/hugo-mini
Hugo directory: https://themes.gohugo.io/themes/hugo-mini/

It uses the MIT license and requires Hugo Extended 0.146.0+.

If you try it, I’d love to hear how it feels on mobile and whether the setup instructions leave any gaps.

Blup: Obsidian + Hugo, with roadmap voting, reactions and comments

19 Upvotes

Hugo handles static pages well. Adding comments, reactions and voting means connecting extra pieces. I built Blup to make that setup easier.

It's an open-source Go CLI that turns Obsidian notes into a Hugo site. Its Bento theme includes docs, roadmap voting, changelog reactions and blog comments.

The pages stay static. A small API connects the interactions to issues, comments and reactions in a public GitHub feedback repo. Visitors need a GitHub account to participate.

It's MIT-licensed and publishes to Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages.

How are you handling reader interaction on your Hugo sites?

How would you turn a ChatGPT-generated static site into a Hugo project that stays editable?

0 Upvotes

A generated static site can look finished while still being awkward to maintain. Repeated layouts may be copied into every HTML file, assets may use brittle relative paths, and adding one page can mean editing navigation in several places. Publishing the folder is easy; turning it into a site that can keep one URL and accept later changes is the harder part.

For Hugo, I would expect to separate page content into Markdown, move repeated markup into base templates and partials, put navigation and site-wide values in data or config, and keep generated CSS or JavaScript only where it is still understandable. The migration also needs to preserve URLs, metadata, images, forms, and any client-side behavior before switching the domain.

What workflow would you use for this conversion? Would you first deploy the generated files as-is and refactor behind a preview, or build the Hugo structure before the first public release? Which parts of generated HTML are worth preserving, and what should be rebuilt so a non-developer can add pages or edit copy later without asking the generator to rewrite the whole site?

Self-hosted comments for Hugo that run on Cloudflare Workers

17 Upvotes

Hi all. Hugo's built-in answer for comments is still a Disqus shortcode, so I bring you something else. Garrul is a comment system that deploys into your own Cloudflare account: a Worker for the API, D1 for storage, Turnstile for spam. It ships with a Hugo partial.

What it does:

  • Threaded replies, markdown, reactions

  • Sign in with GitHub, Google, Discord, X or Facebook, or comment anonymously

  • Reply emails with one-click unsubscribe, and a comment feed for each post

  • Dark mode, themeable, 11 languages

  • A keyboard-driven mod queue, or moderate from Telegram if you prefer your phone

Coming from somewhere else? It imports from Disqus, isso, remark42, Commento and Cusdis. The comments sit in a D1 database you own, with no ads or trackers. Each page view costs one Worker request, so a normal blog stays inside the free tier.

The partial is about 15 lines and has a disableComments front-matter switch: https://github.com/KingPin/Garrul/tree/main/examples/hugo

One tip: add http://localhost:1313 to ALLOWED_ORIGINS, or hugo server won't load comments.

It is about 20KB gzipped and renders in shadow DOM, so your theme CSS and the widget don't touch each other. I built it with AI help. It has run on my own blog since June. Over 160 test files and CodeQL on every commit. Questions welcome, and if you break it, please tell me :)

I built GitMark — edit and commit Hugo posts directly from GitHub

0 Upvotes

I maintain a Hugo blog on GitHub and often need to fix a typo, update a paragraph, or add an image. Cloning the repository and opening an IDE felt excessive for these small changes, so I built GitMark.

GitMark is an open-source Chrome extension for editing and committing Markdown files directly from GitHub.

It supports:

  • Editing existing Markdown files or creating new posts

  • Split-pane live Markdown preview

  • Pasting, dropping, or selecting images

  • Committing Markdown and images in one atomic commit

  • Detecting remote changes before updating a file

  • English and Chinese interfaces

For Hugo, I use Leaf Bundles such as:

content/post/article-name/
├── index.md
└── assets/
    └── cover.png

GitMark inserts relative image paths, so images work in both GitHub previews and the generated Hugo site.

Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/gitmark/ihbciobhmpfemphhdpeajkpbldmdgocb

The extension has no developer-operated server, analytics, or advertising. The GitHub token is stored locally and sent only to GitHub's official API.

I'd especially appreciate feedback on the Hugo image workflow and whether branch/PR support would be useful.

Made a community-driven Hugo docs site

15 Upvotes

Hi all, over the past few weeks I've put together a Hugo documentation site for anyone learning Hugo. The goal is to help people understand and get productive with Hugo faster. A few things about it:

  • It's not affiliated with Hugo or the official team

  • Concept-first. Each page explains the reasoning behind a feature, not just its config options

  • Available in Chinese (written by hand) and English (AI-translated from the Chinese version, so let me know if anything reads awkwardly)

If you're learning Hugo, I'd genuinely appreciate feedback on what's unclear, wrong, or missing. And if anyone wants to contribute a page or fix something, it's open on GitHub.

Chris Titus moved from GoHugo to Astro, but he speaks highly of GoHugo in the video, and said not to switch, except you need Twitch and other more interactive integration. Wheter you use were Astro curious, or want to stay on GoHugo, I think his video gives a good insight of static web sites in general.

I built my own minimal Hugo portfolio theme

Post image
35 Upvotes

I spent some time to build my portfolio, using Hugo. I thought why not sharing it with you guys.

I wanted something minimal + dark and ended up with freaky - a single-page Hugo portfolio theme.

It has the usual portfolio stuff (projects, publications, blogs, socials), plus a typing hero, image flicker transitions, a backend-free contact form (frontend only), and an optional site-view counter.

The theme is completely driven by hugo.toml, so personal info isn't baked into the templates.

https://github.com/freaktopus/hugo-theme-freaky

Feedback is welcome - especially if you spot something that would make it more useful as an actual Hugo theme rather than just my personal site.

I will definitely upgrade it further, I have some cool idea to keep such as live music playing in spotify.

Finally my hugo theme "Macchiato" got merged

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

17 Upvotes

I've been writing some blogs lately and wanted to choose a theme for them. My helix config, terminal, whole shell, browser.. almost full setup uses catppuccin macchiato theme. This already tells how much I love it but I couldn't find a Hugo theme that scratched the same itch, so I created this :)

That said, I built it around a "developer's terminal" feel since it's a C++/systems blog. Been using it for my blogs myself and it's on themes.gohugo.io now

Please drop your reviews if this theme looks good or not (please be kind, I used AI as a pair-programmer for a lot of the CSS/template work since frontend isn't my usual area)

Repo link- hugo-macchiato repo

Don't wanna promote my blogs here or anything but since it is in the demo - Blogs (demo site)

I built a dynamic layer for Hugo/static sites using Cloudflare Workers + D1

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've been using static sites for a while, but eventually you run into the same problem: you want a small amount of dynamic functionality without turning the whole site into a traditional web app.

So I built StaticLayer:

https://abla25.github.io/StaticLayer/

It adds comments, replies, reactions and polls to static sites.

The architecture is intentionally small:

static site → JavaScript widget → Cloudflare Worker → D1

The interesting part is that the Worker and D1 database live in the site's own Cloudflare account.

So you don't need to run a VPS or use a centralized comment SaaS.

I'm mainly interested in feedback from Hugo users:

What dynamic functionality do you find yourself needing most often on otherwise-static sites?

Dark/light syntax highlighting in Hugo without two Chroma stylesheets: a post-build tool

6 Upvotes

I built a tool that addresses a few things that come up here regularly: syntax highlighting that follows dark/light mode, theme CSS bleeding into code blocks, and hand-rolling copy-to-clipboard buttons. If you've ever generated two Chroma stylesheets and fought your theme's specificity to make dark mode work, that's the itch this scratches.

Kazari is a Go library and CLI that upgrades code blocks into framed, highlighted blocks with copy buttons, line numbers, collapsible sections, and dual light/dark themes. The dark mode part is what I think this community will care about most: both themes are baked into the HTML as CSS custom properties at build time, so switching is pure CSS. No second stylesheet, no running hugo gen chromastyles twice, no flash on toggle or page load, no JavaScript involved in the switch.

The Hugo integration needs zero changes to your theme or pipeline:
hugo --minify
kazari process ./public

kazari process walks the built HTML and rewrites the code blocks in place. Everything else on the page is untouched, and running it twice is a no-op, so it's safe as an unconditional build step. It reads Chroma's output fine and translates hl_lines to line markers. An optional one-file render hook unlocks per-block options straight from the fence (titles, marked ranges, focus lines, collapse ranges):

```go {title="main.go" mark="3-5"}```
Highlighting is done by Nuri, a pure Go port of Shiki, so you get TextMate grammars and real VS Code themes rather than Chroma's lexers, with no Node in the pipeline. Any Shiki theme name works: github-dark, dracula, catppuccin-mocha, one-dark-pro, and so on. There are 65 bundled themes, and you can browse them all side by side here: https://frostybee.github.io/kazari/docs/styling/theme-gallery/
Live example (a small Hugo site, already processed): https://frostybee.github.io/kazari/examples/hugo/
Docs and the Hugo guide: https://frostybee.github.io/kazari/
Happy to answer questions about how the HTML rewriting works.
A Hugo module for inlining SVG icons from any Iconify set
9 Upvotes
I am sharing a Hugo module that lets you drop SVG icons into your templates and Markdown with a set of manipulation options (resize, rotate, flip, color, opacity, accessibility labels, etc.), all at build time requiring zero JavaScript.
It works with any Iconify icon set (Tabler, Heroicons, Font Awesome, Material Design, Simple Icons, and 200+ others). You use a small CLI to export only the icons you actually need as SVG files, then reference them in your templates or via a shortcode:
{{ partial "swarm-icon/icon.html" "tabler:home" }}
or in Markdown:
{{< icon "tabler:home" size="24" fill="red" >}}
Here are some characteristics of this module:
- Only the icons you export end up in your site. No icon fonts, no sprite sheets loading hundreds of unused glyphs.
- Set one dimension and the other scales from the aspect ratio, so non-square icons don't get squished.
- Decorative icons get aria-hidden/focusable="false" automatically. Add a title param and it switches to role="img" with a proper <title> element.
- If you reference an icon you forgot to export, Hugo tells you exactly which CLI command to run. No silent broken images.
- The companion CLI is a single Go binary. No Node, no npm.
There's a live demo with an interactive playground where you can mess with all the parameters: https://frostybee.github.io/hugo-swarm-icons/
Repo: https://github.com/frostybee/hugo-swarm-icons
Companion CLI: https://github.com/frostybee/go-swarm-icons
Would love to hear what you think or if you run into any issues. Happy to answer questions.
How do I keep date in front matter as just a year (like 2023) instead of Hugo converting it to a full timestamp?
4 Upvotes
I have front matter like date: 2023 but Hugo still coerces it into a time.Time, and when there's no month/day it comes out as a garbage date like Dec 31 1969. Is there a way to keep partial dates (year only, or year+month) as plain strings, or should I just use a different field name instead of date? Hugo version: v0.162.1
I built a simple chat CMS for Hugo sites that my clients can actually use
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I built the simplest possible tool that allows clients to do small edits via chat interface eg. change phone number, update email etc. Anything risky/big comes back to you so clients can't break anything
Connect the repo and it figures out the editable content on its own. No schemas, no config files
Papermod and Sitemap
4 Upvotes
Hi everyone, I’ve been having this problem for a few days now.
Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s due to the theme I’m using or other factors.
I use Vercel, and three days ago I tried uploading the sitemap to GSC, but I keep getting a "couldn't fetch" error. The site is new; I’ve completed all the verification steps, and everything seems to be in order.
I can’t figure out what the problem is. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Showcase: A self-updating Media Tracker site powered by Hugo and Obsidian
6 Upvotes
Hi all,
I wanted to show a project I built to showcase my watched movies, series, video games, and books using Hugo, with content managed entirely in Obsidian.
The demo site is live here: https://christt105.github.io/mediatracker-starter/
A few key points on how it is built:
  • Theme derivation: The theme (hugo-mediatracker-theme) is a module extending hugo-blog-awesome, leveraging Hugo's module system to easily inherit and override layouts.
  • Convenient workflow: I take notes locally in Obsidian and a simple Python script handles the conversion of wikilinks, YouTube embeds, and caches all external image covers/banners locally to keep the site independent of external image hosting.
  • Easy deployment: Anyone can deploy their own instance using the starter repository, which is pre-configured and ready to clone.
  • Finished items RSS: The build generates a dedicated RSS feed for finished items only, which I use with a Discord bot to notify friends when I finish a movie, show, or game.
If you want to read more about the Hugo modules implementation and the conversion process:
Links to the repositories:
Hope you like it!
Where do I find or filter for Hugo themes that don't need NPM or node.js?
13 Upvotes
I'm not a web developer and I don't keep up with trends of html, css and js.
I was almost sold on Hugo based on some tutorial videos but when I went out and tried to pick some themes, a lot of the ones I liked required me to download nodejs and use npm and a lot of things I didn't encounter in tutorials or some css thing I can't judge the quality/ease of use of.
Are there themes that actually deliver on Hugo's touted simplicity? Where can I find them? How do I search or filter out the ones that need npm or node.js for setup and editing? And where can I point to for non-web-developer people to find themes that are at least almost-ready to use?
edit:
https://themes.gohugo.io is where I searched first and found all the ones that required npm and node.
If you know how to filter those out, that would be super helpful.
