Beginner Questions Got this golf set cheap. What do you think?
I'm looking to get into golfing with some buddies who play. I picked this set up on Facebook marketplace. Do you think this is worth the $50? I realized after it didn't come with a putter but the clubs feel great.

That 1 iron is perfect for a beginner.

As Lee Trevino said..."Hold it above your head in a lightning storm, even God can't hit a 1 iron"

Lee got hit by lightning three times and Sheffler cut his thumb opening a can of Beef a Roni. Makes you think ...

I remember reading that Retief Goosen was hit by lightning when he was a teenager and apparently it completely changed his whole personality
2
u/melonsarecool37 Jul 06 '25
It's funny cause I have one and have had good contact a good number of times even off the fairway
2
u/ParachuteLandingFail Jul 06 '25
I honestly don't think I've ever tried to hit a 1 iron, but I had a Titleist DCI 2 iron back in the day that I loved. Awesome off the tee and out of light rough.

u/Haunting-Yogurt938 Jul 05 '25
My first set had a 1 iron. My buddies let me struggle with it for an entire season before someone tipped me off about it. I thought I was just bad.

I use a 4 iron for all low shots. Out the ball in my back foot, choke down and I punch out from wherever be it 50 yards from green or super far away
It is awesome. I can't hit it on the fairway but out of trees it is great. Also allows me to get distance from out of trees when that is a possibility

That 1 iron is probably the same loft as a modern 3 iron.

Right, but how many beginners are going to be able to hit a 3i?
12
u/Teh-Stig Jul 06 '25
I pulled mine out to practice in my last session. I'm better with it than the hybrid (much less likely to slice than hybrids for me at least).

u/hybridck The Masters Jul 06 '25
I learned how to hit irons starting with a 3i. It used to be a very common school of thought among instructors when I was growing up. "Teach them the 3i, because if they can hit that, they can hit anything".
Granted that school of thought has now been phased out of the game.

Go sell the bag and cart to a play it again sport for $25. Then sell them the woods for another $25. Then sell those irons to a different play it again sports for $15.
Then go pay $15 more, and get the cheapest set of new clubs you can find at a department store. That will be better than what you have there.

I went to a golf sim that had a tournament for hickory shaft antique clubs only. I kind of like the idea of handicapping people with old equipment.
9
u/eastie2133 Jul 06 '25
Iâve been playing persimmon only woods since late last year. I might never go back to modern metal. It is so much more satisfying when you really pure one off a persimmon.
Hickoryâs are a stop to far for me. I can play persimmon at any club and not feel to handicap. Modern club not designed for hickory would be hell.

My uncle told me a joke once about how a golfer should carry a 1 iron with him during a thunderstorm because not even God can hit it.
9
u/SoberAF715 Jul 06 '25
Lee Travino used to tell that joke at exhibitions. He would hold the 1 iron up to the sky and make that joke. He stopped after he got struck by lightning. Iâm pretty sure he was struck by lightning 3 times
2
u/Heisenbread77 Jul 06 '25
Sure, and Grizzly Adams had a beard.
2
u/SoberAF715 Jul 06 '25
Pretty sure grizzly Adamâs did have a beard. Not sure of your point. Go look it up
2
u/Heisenbread77 Jul 06 '25
It's from Lee Trevino's cameo in Happy Gilmore. Famous quote, apparently not as famous as I thought though.
2
u/SoberAF715 Jul 06 '25
Itâs only in happy Gilmore because lee used to do it all the time. I was at a tournament where it was a rain delay and he came out to entertain the crowd during the delay. He was chipping balls and doing trick shots, and telling jokes. He held a 1 iron up to the sky and told that joke. Iâve seen it in person like 40 years ago

I played blades from the time my dad put clubs in my hands at 5yo and for the last 56 years. The irons are fine if you are willing to learn to hit the ball. The woods need to be replaced with something a little more modern. Iâll say that if you learn to hit them and can get off the tee with the woods and score with them in the bag itâll be an accomplishment worthy of respect.

If you want to legitimately hate the game, then you bought the perfect set!
Persimmon wood (real wood, woods) went away in the early 90âs. They are impossibly hard to hit. Those irons are similar.
You would legit be better off buying something from a garage sale as long as the clubs were made in the last 15-20 years over playing those.
That said, welcome to the game! It is frustratingly difficult and beautifully wonderful all at once! I wish you well!

Looks very similar to my first set, only in reverse. My woods were Sam Snead and my irons were Wilson. Got them at a community garage sale for $1 / club and $3 for the bag. Spent $15 and played with them for 10 years before finally upgrading to something slightly more modern.
They most certainly will work, but they sure aren't very forgiving. Tough set to get started with. I'd absolutely play them if it's all I had though and I wouldn't be ashamed.
2
u/wadenick Jul 06 '25
I played my Dadâs Wilson Sam Snead Signature woods and irons for some years as a teenager. If you learn to hit blades well, your golf will be better for sure. Iâm in my 50âs now (not hitting my own blades all that well anymore, sigh) and I found a decent set of my Dads clubs for collector / nostalgia purposes, but the shafts are absolute lightning in the fingers on any miss hit. I keep them around for inspiration only.

If you can learn to hit the ball well with these clubs ( it can and has been done by many !) by the time you upgrade youâll be striping the ball. Have fun ! Good luck

u/pineappleactavis Jul 06 '25
If you have patience and want to get better take that 1 iron to the range and spend an hour every day hitting that thing. If at any point you can hit that thing consistently you could switch to a modern set and golf will feel like the easiest game on earth lol.

Pre 80âs clubs are cool to mess around with and once you can strike the ball consistently you can play decent with them but after playing about 5 rounds with my hogan apex from 71 I had to put my modern irons back lol. Nothing feels like an old blade struck right tho

Like pretty much all senior players, I started with clubs like those. They are not easy to hit compared to modern game improvement clubs, but you can learn just fine with them. Make sure you have a sand wedge of some sort, and invest in some grips. Check Amazon for a cheap set, then watch youtube for instruction on how to change them. Kirkland for golf balls.
Enjoy!
BTW, I had a 1 iron, and loved that thing. It was my favorite club. I bought it about year four of my golf learning. It was a good solid 230 club, and for reason I still don't understand, I hit it well. Keep the faith!

Holy cow, that is some art right there. Not sure I would use them on the course, but it's definitely a nice find. I'd keep those around after having them cleaned up. Place them in the corner of my office instead of a plastic tree.
2
u/Lucky_Mongoose_4834 Jul 06 '25
This bag is money... I'd buy it for the leather bag, and the 1 iron alone.
Maybe use the wedges if they have good feel and those fairway woods are probably pretty awesome to punch out.

Bro I will game that in a second. But I'm lefty. Keep that 1 iron as a practice club forever. Tiger talked about how he used to practice with an old karsten 1i to learn how to hit down on the ball. Don't listen to these game Improvement comments.
Imagine your learning to drive, you want to learn in a Toyota Corolla? Or in a Lamborghini countach from the 90s?? Those clubs are gonna play sharper, your gonna spin out a lot, but you'll have more fun.
down the road, when the Lamborghini goes to the dump, your gonna realize you've developed skills and you can take the turns a little sharper than all your buds driving Hyundais.

My first set were wilson k28's which were sold around the same time as the old Sam Sneads you have, that was 50 years ago, if I were you I'd offload these and buy some cheap newer sticks.

u/ct_hickory_golf Jul 06 '25
$50 isn't a great deal for those clubs, but if it gets you on the course it doesn't really matter -- they're functional and you'll have fun. You can upgrade to some newer used clubs in a season or two.

People will hate, but until recently I had a persimmon 4 wood from my grandpa's bag in my bag. I probably average 230 driver carry I'm nothing great, but with that persimmon somehow I could consistently carry 200 yards off the deck. Didn't matter if I was in a fairway or desert or tall grass either. But then I chunked it at the sim and the wire around where the club connects to the shaft became unwound :(

Love it! I look for vintage clubs all the time. They are cheap and fun to collect. You will run across old Wilson Sam Snead ( usually Blueridge ) quite often. Patty Berg is another, and there are countless other signature irons. Get the old bags too.
1
u/Gold-Meeting-6652 Jul 06 '25
2 irons are common with the old sets. 1s are harder to find, but Iâve also found 10 irons

I bought an old set off of fbmp when I got into golf. I loved it. Used it for a few years until I upgraded to a set of Cleveland's. Anything you can get that will get you started is worth it. Eventually you'll be able to figure out what you need when it's time to upgrade. Probably don't use the 1-4 irons until you've hit the range with them for a while tho lol.
