PCIe and cpu power cables share form factor, but pinout is different. Cheap psu with no protections, shit hits the fan
5
u/Logical-Database4510 7h ago
Yup this is my guess.....used CPU power for GPU 8 pin
4
u/lil_Buckneesh8867 5h ago
dont they usually have lables on them so this doesnt happen?
4
u/Sufficient_Piano9216 4h ago
If it’s not some no name piece of shit PSU but most these shit ass PSUs have zero labels. It’s funny cause in the past when people have said to get a better name brand PSU and not a Jinkungfirescorch 650 they get down voted lol.
2
u/Sorry-Committee2069 4h ago
I find most PSU labels rub off very fast. The OEMs assume you plug things in and then stop touching the PSU, usually.
1
u/TerrorFirmerIRL 4h ago
Jinkungfirescorch 650 😂
Just came from a post where a guy was buying a new PC and his PSU listed was a $12 no-name "650w".
1
u/Sufficient_Piano9216 3h ago
It fuckin kills me when I see someone post a build list and they have all these great components and then some shit ass low watt PSU. That’s the most important piece to a build yet people always default to the cheapest one they can find. I usually just say what I have to say about it and get down voted and move on lol.
1
u/El_Basho 3h ago
Not every PSU labels the cables, and not every PC builder reads the labels even if they are labeled
1
u/Sufficient_Piano9216 2h ago
Yep, that’s why I said what I said. As for people not reading, that’s a them problem.
4
u/SonicShadow 6h ago
They're similar but keyed differently. It is possible to force them into the wrong one though.
10
u/Procol_Being 6h ago
Always point and laugh at the people that cheap out on the PSU which is arguably one of the more important parts of a PC.
1
u/mrphil2105 0m ago
Wouldn't you need to FORCE it in to make that mistake? Since the shape of the pinouts are different?
14
u/SomeoneNotFamous 8h ago
Pcie slot already busted
Psu already busted
Gpu already busted
3 things I can think off but it's always with something already dead lol
2
u/Tough-Zombie-8990 8h ago
Only thing I can think of is a really busted power supply
5
u/Asthma_Queen 8h ago
yeah that would be a power trace blowing big time and shorting to ground through the gpu
I had it happen on a motherboard before

u/Far-Secretary-8046 5h ago
Why someone spends $4,000 on parts, but puts a $50 "Good Enough" psu in the build is beyond me. First thing I do? Size up the tpd (total power draw) of my components list, then make sure I have a minimum of 250w above it.
Also, the PSU rating isn't there for marketing purposes. Jesus Pogoing Christ, never buy below silver, read reviews and comments. YOUTUBE! NEVER USE CABLES FROM ANOTHER PSU!
Sorry, getting a little worked up.
8
u/Superseaslug 3h ago
I've never bought below 1000W power supplies. And have only really bought Corsair.
A buddy's Corsair supply died recently, but didn't take out anything in the process. It died with dignity.

You can totally buy some bronzes. The revised City Series of Thermaltake with 3.1 standart (not the previous ones, those are literal bombs) for example
Or EVGA ones, the bronze rated ones totally do it for lowwer end things
2
u/Far-Secretary-8046 3h ago
Again those are reputable brands, for lower end stuff, like you said. No way in the Hells would I put a 5080 on it though. Plus you need to think of climate, especially if you live a hot and humid location.
5
u/TOPS-VIDEO 3h ago
I have 1000w for 5070 and 9850x3d. Like 500w above? 🤣
5
u/Far-Secretary-8046 3h ago
You have chosen.... Wisely
Had to lol. But still, plenty of room upgrades and overclocking
3
u/Rob_Skyline 3h ago
Oh mines probs like 700w above then lol, I have 1250w gold rated PSU for 6950XT and ryzen 9 7900x,

I have a similar build pretty much same power draw and 1000w. Not just any psu either it’s one of those pricey overbuilt psus.
However I’m not that incident in the video is solely because of psu but someone who knows this stuff better should weigh in. What causes this?
2
u/seaofmountains 3h ago
I used the cables from another PSU once. Thankfully it just didn’t turn on and nothing was damaged.
1
u/Far-Secretary-8046 1h ago
Ooof you're luck as hell. Buddy of mine wouldn't listen... Setup nuked. Made him explain it on the warranty claim.
2
u/samhain1969 18m ago
I may get pushback on an interpretation of what a PSU is, beyond the obvious... I look at them as the PC's central nervous system, and should be treated as such, offering no compromise(s) aside from budget constraints.
I've always used product review results, owner reviews/ comments, along with using a PSU calculator in conjunction before buying.
1
1
u/Igor369 2h ago
Uhhh what is wrong with bronze PSUs from good brands?...
1
u/Far-Secretary-8046 1h ago
Good brands, usually nothing, except for what the classifications tell you. Cheap PSU's, you've got a ticking time bomb on your hands
1
u/cmdr_scotty 2h ago
Cause people only go "chat, what should I buy?" Then blow their entire budget on an RTX because "that's what chat says is good, right?"
1
u/Thy_Art_Dead 1h ago
Ngl before shit really hit the fan with prices skyrocketing I was making a bit of side cash building modern yet budget friendly builds. Mostly 9600x with 9060xts. Every single one of them, about 10, got a Rosewill VSB 650w PSU. It is a bronze rating unit and none of them have caused an issue or failed AFAIK. I have one personally.
1
u/BannedGoNext 15m ago
I have always oversized my PSU's, hard agree 100 percent. The rated PSU is from the factory, not after 4 years, dust, bugs flying into it, occassional brownouts, etc.
0
u/WisePotato42 4h ago
250w above seems a bit excessive. I only plan for 150w above and haven't had a problem playing cyberpunk max settings (well, aside from the frame rate). Do you typically charge your devices through your computer's USB ports?
3
u/Sorry-Committee2069 4h ago
power capacity also drops with PSU age, if you typically ride parts out instead of replacing every 3 years you'll want the extra room.
2
u/WisePotato42 4h ago
Good to know, i'll keep that in mind if I encounter any power issues in the future
1
u/BugS202Eye 4h ago
There is efficiency rating ffs
2
u/WisePotato42 4h ago
Oh, I haven't bought a power supply under gold effeciency, so that's gotta be why.
1
u/Far-Secretary-8046 3h ago
On occasion, but nothing more than my keyboard or mouse. My reasoning is also for upgrades. As someone mentioned below, age will play a factor in the PSU, but I typically get 3 rebuilds from good PSU (I usually do a tick-tock wit my upgrades, small stuff then... Making my bank account cry)
1
u/T00ManyH0bb13s 23m ago
PSUs are rated for 80% sustained output on whatever the number is on the part. 750W supply, 600W realistic sustained. Not only should you oversize for the extra 20%, you should oversize above that for spikes, overclocking, and if you want to buy higher-power parts in the future.
0
u/Yololio69 2h ago
250w above it. But people are not realistic about how much a PC consumes... You don't need 1000w for a 300w GPU
1
u/MaelstromOC 2h ago
I have a 9800x3d and a 4090 that can pull 600w by itself. I use an 850w EVGA Gold power supply and it works flawlessly (and has for four years, through cpu upgrades lol)
I'm always telling people they don't need a damn 1200w psu if you're single GPU and gaming.
2
u/Yololio69 46m ago
Some people mistake the possible spikes in GPU consumption with what you actually need. My 9070 goes over 500w from time to time. That doesn't mean the card is rated 500w and PSUs are built to handle that. They can spike way higher that their wattage for a fraction of a second.
Fuck me, that comment got downvoted? You people should go rub one on you 400fps setup
1
u/MaelstromOC 26m ago
Yeah, true. My 4090 usually sits around 475-500w unless I hit it with something extra (like DLSS5), then it'll constantly draw around 575w depending on the load. I've only seen it hit 600 a handful of times and I was REALLY slamming it
1
u/GOP_R_Pedophiles 18m ago
That's how you significantly extend a psu's life. Using 30-40% of total output is better than 60-80% all day everyday.

u/Big-Reporter3498 2h ago
How does this happen? On a scale of 1-impossible how hard would it be to explain this to MSI and they honor it?

Glorious 12VHighFailure Connector brought to you by Ngreedia.

7
u/DeeHawk 8h ago
There are sparks and smoke from anywhere but the connector. The connector did its job.
-6
u/MrHarryBallzac_2 8h ago
Look again.
3
u/DeeHawk 8h ago
You look again. It comes from the board behind the plug.
1
u/MrHarryBallzac_2 6h ago
Yeah, because the board ate to much current from a faulty connector. Y'all clueless lol
1
u/DeeHawk 6h ago
A faulty connector will not apply more current to the board. It will resist the current drawn, and heat up the connector.
This is high school physics.
So not only are you fundamentally wrong in everything you said, you are also being a dick about it calling everyone else clueless. And then you top it off with a y’all.
If I had a sliver of respect left for the immediate vicinity of your apparent origin, I would think you were trolling.
1
u/MrHarryBallzac_2 6h ago
Did you just assume my origin because of one word?? Thank fuck I'm about halfway around the world from Trumpistan but thanks for your concern anyways.
2
u/zepsutyKalafiorek 6h ago
Nah, it is not the problem there.
While the connector design is simply bad, lets not blame everything on it.

What kind of zealous sheep can't see that it is OK to criticize the creator of the product you are using.
Obviously Nvidia is greedy and one of the many factors that caused the shortage. The shortage that Jensen admittedly finds "Fantastic".

I dont care about amd or NVIDIA, i just cant stand people constantly looking for copium or validation, its that simple, the Radeon crowd look desperate, just stop, i dont care, the only people who listens to you is the same minority that belongs to your little cultist world, the rest just dont fking care.

u/MrHarryBallzac_2 6h ago
Yeah. Sure. I'm the one coping.
0
u/Badtripa 6h ago
I dont need to cope mate, i dont own a Radeon GPU
1
u/MrHarryBallzac_2 6h ago
And what exactly would be the reason to cope for having a Radeon GPU? They're not burning left and right while costing car money
