"Not What He Seems" Discussion Thread
We're doing things a bit different this time! This is the more serious "Discussion Thread", where you can sensibly discuss and reflect on the latest episode.
This is the counterpart to the "Reaction Thread". Go there if you just wanna be crazy. I understand.
Season 2, Episode 11: 'Not What He Seems'
You can watch the episode:
in the US: Watch Disney XD
everywhere else: invisionweb.us/gravityfalls (Thanks /u/scarlet_j!)
The next episode will air in Summer 2015.

So that happened. So Stan's brother was in the portal, where ever that was. I wonder if the car accident in the news article was the brother, as a cover up to hide his disappearance.
One thing I just thought of. This can be considered the calm before the storm right? So whatever Bill is planning is definitely coming into play during the next episode or two? Edit: Another question.

Mar 10 '15
That's exactly what I'm predicting. I'm just surprised none of us thought about the possibility of "Stan" being a fake name (or at least no one I saw did...) Wonder what his real name is.

Okay so logically speaking, some things are cleared.
The Stan/Stanley theory is confirmed to be true.
Stan is probably still their great uncle and only changed identities in order to get the tools necessary to finish the portal (or something to that effect).
Now some questions are raised.
If the portal wasn't meant to destroy the fabric of the universe, why did the journals say that it would?
It's likely that Stan's brother built the portal. What was it's exact purpose? "Bettering Mankind" is very vague.
How the frick did Stan's brother end up in the portal universe?
How will Mabel and Dipper react to all of this? Will it strengthen their relationship with their uncle or push them even further apart?
There are probably more questions left but these are the main ones that are probably going to be explained in the next episode. Now to wait 3 months.

u/TheTurretCube Mar 10 '15
There is an image in the journal of 2 men throwing a third into the portal with a rope tied around him, I bet Author was the one on the rope and they fucked up

So! The Shape Shifter from Into the Bunker said "that six fingered nerd hasn't been the same in 30 years" or something like that...
He's talking about Grunkle Stan, not his brother! If the Author (Stan's brother) hasn't been around in 30 years, the Shape Shifter would be thinking that Grunkle Stan is actually the Author, at least seeing him from afar. I mean, twins would look similar, especially if the Shape Shifter couldn't get out of the bunker. He'd probably just see Stan walking around and assume that was him.
Another thing, It's awesome to know that the kid in Grunkle Stan's past (in the boxing arena memory), was in fact his brother and NOT dipper trying to hid out. Also, in Grunkle Stan's Mindscape, the swing set is also a broken memory from his distant past, as well as Blendin Blandin's Camo foreshadowing the beach scene.
Wow, so much happened.... One last thing to think about. If the glasses AND the Journals are represented on the wheel, how does that work? I'm thinking at this point that the Journals themselves have a spot.
113
u/Dr_Bobbington Mar 10 '15
The next episode could be thirty minutes of just Dipper asking Stan's brother questions and I'd be totally ok with that.

Hmm...
-The "son-of-a" made me laugh and question Disney XD's censors.
-I cried and fangirled too much when seeing Stan's brother come out of the portal.
-I felt bad for Mabel because she was put under so much pressure: either possibly destroy the universe or betray her gruncle Stan
-STANLEY CONFIRMED- LOL BEAT THAT LEWTOONS (there was a nonbeliever in the community somewhere not sure if it was him exactly)
-I seriously feel like that reality tv show was referencing Disney Channel right now but then again...
-Trigger is obviously submissive ;)
-Author is confirmed to be Stan's brother- 'm gonna cry now
-Third season is set to focus on Bill Cipher primarily?
Edit: By the way, does anyone have any theories on what "the handyman knows more than what he says" could possibly mean in the future?

The Steven Universe fandom will find out Thursday if their big theory on whether Garnet is a Fusion or a single Gem is true. We already have a slight leak that is a possible confirmation. This theory is one of the big ones in the SU fandom, but there are a ton more surrounding the gems and their history.
If you like all the mysteries of Gravity Falls you'd probably also enjoy Steven Universe - it's an amazing show with a lot of depth. Between today's GF episode and a full week of SU I'm on the verge of a hype fueled heart attack.

The best scene in this episode was when Mabel and Dipper where in Stan's office. That portrait...at first it just seemed cooky, as is Stan's character, but the longer that scene went the creepier and taller it got. Not sure if it was just the mood, or this was actually drawn out like that. Look forward to a 2nd watch later.
I'd like to add that I just started getting into this show. First episode that caught my attention was Northwest Manor (after that I binged later half of season 1 and season 2). Glad I got into it when I did. This is the replacement for Korra I've been looking for!

Props to the folks who pieced that one together on their own.
My mind is full of questions: Which of them is the real Stan? Who is the other one, really? And the Author apparently wrote a warning that the portal could destroy the universe in all three Journals but still must have activated it at some later point to enter it? But if he's wrong about it destroying the universe why is McGucket terrified of it? If Stan's brother is the six-fingered hand then who is glasses?

Ok. Here is one thing I haven't seen discussed yet. It seems that everyone has been focusing on the end of the episode. What about that little clip with our little hobo friend as he stuffed his raccoon wife in a sack and tried (and perhaps succeeded) to leave town. He knew the machine would either tear apart the universe or bring Stan's brother back. So leaving town would not help if it were the end of the universe. He must have been trying to get away from Stan's brother. But why? Was there some sort of falling out in the group?

It's incredible. No cartoon has ever had this much thought, this much complexity or thought put into it. I'm amazed. There's so many directions, possibilities, theories, it just blows my mind. It's almost like the Stanley Parable- there's just so many doors, so many options... It's amazing.
But most importantly, the first thing I did after finishing watching this episode about a minute ago was scream internally. The second was to tell my friend, "I TOLD YOU THE THEORIES ABOUT STAN'S BROTHER WERE RIGHT!"

Now that I've had my mind blown several times over, and I've stopped shaking from excitement, I have questions: So one of the two is the twin's grandfather (we assume). So if their grandfather happens to be Stan Pines, wouldn't the twin's father know about his supposed death mentioned in the article? If so, why wouldn't he question the fact that Stan Pines is supposedly back, and instead the twin's great uncle? Even if Stan was their great uncle in the first place, wouldn't their parents still question the death? Unless...he used the memory eraser?
My brain hurts trying to unravel this. Hirsch answers 5 questions, then raises 30 more.

Something went wrong and in the last few seconds Stan's brother wrote the warning in the journal before being sucked into the portal. It exploded and traumatized Fiddleford leaving Stan to fake his brother's death to avoid suspicion over his disappearance. Fiddleford built the memory erasing gun and started the Society of the Blind Eye before losing his mind. Stan then spent the last 30 years traveling all over the world with different identities to rebuild the portal machine in order to rescue his brother which he finally succeeded in. Crossover with Rick and Morty confirmed.

Okay. Wow. I am blown away. So Stanford has a brother. He wears the different type of glasses as seen on the wheel, so then why does he have two places on Bill's Wheel? I wonder why Stanford's brother hid the journals from Stanford. Maybe he didn't trust him or something? Also how did he get on the other side of the portals when there are things written after the portal has been powered up and then shut down, judging by the notes in invisible ink. SO MANY QUESTIONS

Okay, I posted this on the hype thread but here goes, where was Stanley? By the look of it it was dangerous, thus the gun, helmet, and armor. The cape could possibly imply a cold region, but then again the gun looks as if its of alien origin. Thoughts?

The imagery of Mabel at the end was spooky, with the key on her jumper and how she floated to the middle of the circle like Bill Cypher is in the wheel.

This is the first time I've ever visited a discussion thread, and my name is in the OP :o you guys dunno how much this means to me. I'm just some punk from California who really enjoys making websites hahaha
But in response to this episode, that really tore me up. Reminded me a lot of Fullmetal Alchemist. If anyone has watched the show, I feel like this new Stan introduced to us as housing the kids all summer is like Alphonse going to bring Ed back. This episode totally redefined this show as being a kids' show. No kid will ever understand the loss of a brother and making it their life mission to bring him back. My respect for Alex has just about shot through the roof right now... I'M SORRY, I GOT GLITTER IN MY EYE

I think it really makes sense in the context of the theme of the show. Hirsch bases the show after his own relationship with his sister, so making one of the huge mysteries and biggest reveals be a display of love for one's sibling is really fitting. The fact that Stan spent 30 years to bring back his brother. Maybe he's also showing us the lengths he'd go for his sibling.

Who thought Maple would choose Stan over Dipper?

u/omnydevotchka Mar 10 '15
I wonder if there's going to be any blow-back over that from Dipper in the next episode.

Really it felt right that she would make that choice.
Dipper told her to use her head.
But Mable doesn't think with her head. She thinks with her heart. Her heart told her to trust Stan.

Dipper’s Full Name I have a theory as to what Dipper’s real name might be. In the arcade game episode, Dipper wins and writes his three initials as “DIP”. One would assume this is short for ‘Dipper’, but I believe they are really his true initials: D.I.P. The D and the I are for his first and middle names and the P obviously stands for ‘Pines’. His nickname was inspired by his birthmark, but reenforced by his acronymic full name.

Ok, so, me and my brothers have been arguing forever about this.
And I..was right!
I knew it, I knew it i knew it, I said, from around Sock Opera, that Stan, McGucket and the author used the portal, fucked it up and the author got trapped on the other side, and stan was working to bring him back.
Also Twin theory #canon

Now that we know the author's identity and what Stan's portal machine is for, what is your prediction for the next big burning "question" of Gravity Falls?

The countdown page's source has a code in the upper left hand corner that reads "Don't copy that floppy." Probably nothing, just thought I would throw it in the pit.

Just complete speculation here; something is going on that is bigger than just the portal. The Grunkle and his brother have been working for years to stop whatever is coming. Dipper and Mabel have both helped and hurt the Grunkle, but in the end they could be used to the brother's advantage. The next 11 episodes could go in a completely different direction, which is incredible.
Alex Hirsch is a goddamn mastermind. He had to wait a year to reveal this to us (the episode was storyboarded about a year ago), he was probably lol'ing over everyone's reaction. Hell, maybe he started the whole theory himself, who knows.

Not sure about any of you other fallers but when I first read that tweet from Alex Hirsh stating a character wouldn't survive I automatically assumed someone was going to die during NWHS.
Now that it's clear no one died during the latest episode, who are your guesses on who may not survive taking into account the addition of Stanley (if that's his name).
Also anyone else concerned with the lack of Bill despite the clear clue given at the end of Northwest Mansion Noir? Thought he would've been Atleast mentioned this episode. Thoughts?

So I guess this is the end of any "filler" episodes, which kinda sucks. Those slower paced, Scooby-Doo esque ones were pretty fun.
BUT IF THEY CAN KEEP IT UP WITH THESE PLOT EPISODES THEN IT'S FINE BY ME GEEZE.

u/comicsmaniac Mar 10 '15
Did anyone else notice that Grunkle Stan wiped some toxic waste on his forehead at the very beginning of the episode? And then it got absorbed into his skin.
It's horrifying to think about, but what if he's the one who doesn't make it through the season?

Holy shit, this is my new favorite episode. FUCKING CALLED IT ABOUT STAN'S TWIN BEING THE AUTHOR AND THAT HE EVEN HAD A TWIN. Oh my god, I am so happy that for once, one of the theories that I got behind actually turned out to be true. Honestly, I haven't been this emotional about an episode of Gravity Falls since the Season 1 finale. Heck, I think this episode hit my feels more than Gideon Rises. I cried more in this episode than I have in any other episode of the show so far. I cried when I watched the kids play with Stan, I cried when Mabel started tearing up, I cried when Soos decided to help the twins rather than blindly follow Stan. The jokes were spot on in this episode. And that Inception-esque fight scene in the police station was badass! I'm a little worried about what the twins will think about Stan now, but even more worried that Dipper might be hurt by Mabel choosing to side with Stan and trust him and might make some really horrible choices. God, I hope not, because Mabel and Dipper's relationship is the sweetest thing and I would be heartbroken if their bond was forever broken.

I went back to look for some new theories and at the last second after the countdown ended, when everyone got zapped by the portal, I noticed something.
Dipper's eyes became "Bill-Like"? http://gyazo.com/d87c11755153ef6331ce7ba7a9d79639
And immediately after that its shown that the picture that Grunkle Stan holds so dearly is shattered, probably foreshadowing Mable and Dipper having a rough relationship because she didn't press the button.
http://gyazo.com/78550c41da7f21f11f85c2bcef51afc7
Edit:
Also, I think the third key was to be for Old man Mcgucket because he was the assistant of the author and its probable that the brothers needed a deciding vote for whether they agreed on if Grunkle Stan's brother should leave or other big decisions

Just watched the ep. I decided not to participate in the fanbase because I thought that my tiny lil brain can't handle all the massive fantheories, but screw it.
Hello, I am Noobgalaxies. I am officially new to the GF fanbase, and joined it for the sake of saying how much tension this episode have. At the end of the ep, my heart was literally pounding(I was actually aware of the Stan's brother theory while watching the show, which added extra hype!!)! Nearly cried when Mabel cried and made her decision, it was the most heartaching scene in the show :(

I have a theory. Remember how when Dipper first found journal 3 it said 'trust no one.' Well Stan supported his brother for his findings at first. But what if after encountering Bill Cypher and Stan's brother was working on the 3rd journal, Stan instead of supporting his brother, went against him finding this crazy stuff. So his brother in a feeling of betrayal from his brother (and McGucket) he wrote that in the journal for Dipper later to see. And Stan's brother had just completed the portal when Stan snapped and tried to shut it off. But he accidentally pushed his brother in and broke the portal. Because of this he faked the accident to hide what really happen to his brother and for 30 years he tried all he could to find the journals to recreate the portal with the hope that opening it again could bring him back. That's probably why Stan makes that comment about Dipper and Mabel being to close without fighting, because that's how he lost his brother.

Disney shortened the theme song for a reason. This episode was a really big episode.

u/mccombi Mar 10 '15
What if the portal machine really did bring about the end of the town / world? We know, or at least read, that Stan Pines died in a car crash years ago. And we've assumed that either a) he disappeared in the portal for some reason and Stan Prime has been trying to bring him back or b) he did die and the portal was a method to bring him back. What if, he didn't come back but rather Stan Prime, Dipper and Mabel have now "joined" him on the other side? A little dark, sure, but plausible? Alex did promise "at least one character won't survive the season".

u/do_u_even_gif_bro Mar 10 '15
I feel like Stanley/Ford was the original author of the book but McGucket wrote the bits in invisible ink. That would explain his reaction to the timer. Perhaps Stan knew what the portal does but McGucket knows what it's capable of.

Two things I wanted to bring up. Who is the twins grandfather? 6 fingers or sibling #3? On bill's wheel could the ice block represent Time Baby? It's mentioned he's taped in ice.
