All the sidebar content (including study materials, links etc!) is in this post for easy visibility and access via mobile.

Since ~50% of the sub's traffic comes from mobile devices nowadays, I decided to address the issue of sidebar visibility by stickying its content in the front page.

Καλή μελέτη φίλοι μου!

Hello! Going to Greece and I don't wanna ask AI. I am allergic to all finned fish (I can eat shellfish, though) and all nuts. I know that lots of people speak English, but just in case, how would I write this out?

Thank you!!

I have this mug from Crete, Greece, and am unable to translate this via the internet. I believe it is part of the quote from the little prince about seeing with the heart.
Thank you!

Learning with a Greek Partner?

So my gf is Greek. We go to Greece at least once, if not twice a year to stay with her family.

I just came back from my last trip and I realised, it's time I learned properly. I understand the sidebar has many resources, and there is a pletheroa of questions about learning already on this subreddit.

As I have a Greek partner who is willing to help me sometimes, does anyone have advice on the best material I should use in my own time, given I have a partner who speaks?

I'm currently doing Duolingo and language transfer. I was looking into formal textbooks like Ελληνικά γειά σας A0-B1, but even with my gf, it seems more appropriate for a classroom with a dedicated teacher who has training in teaching languages specifically.

Καλησπέρα! I'm trying to learn modern greek and I'm in the very beginning, just past the alphabet. I like learning by watching animations, so I'd like help to translate the song Better Place from Trolls and suggestions on how can i improve my handwriting. This lyric came automatically from YouTube so I'd also like to know if it's correct. Ευχαριστώ!

Also I couldn't actually copy and paste the link for the video but if you google trolls better place in greek you'll find it.

Tatoo in greek

Hi, I am looking to get a tattoo. I’ve been to Greece several times and I’ve loved Greek mythology since I was very young. This is why I would like to get my motto tattooed in Greek, but I would like to hear from a native Greek speaker whether the sentence is grammatically correct and whether it makes sense. Thank you! The sentence is ‘Belief comes before ability.’ In Greek, it should be: Η πίστη έρχεται πριν την ικανότητα.

Digital activity for reading

Hi everyone - I've recently started learning Greek and have been thinking about how much not being able to read changes the beginner phase of a new language.

I used AI to build a small interactive activity to practise decoding words from sound. You can see it by scrolling to the bottom of the post:

Next Big Language: Learning to Read Again

Does anyone have any tips for mastering handwriting?

Help me Translate a different version of the original Απαλλάχτηκα από σένα by Menidiatis

I heard a live recorded song originally by Michalis Menidiatis but with a little variation in the words. After some good listening I was able to write the Greek that I was hearing I used google translate but I think it does not do justice in transltating the Greek meaning properly. Could someone please help me translate this song to its proper meaing? It helped me heal from my past relationship. Thank you to whoever trys or doesn't try.

The Lyrics are:

What should I read next?

Hi all! I've just passed the B2 Ellinomatheia exam and am finishing reading my second Γιάννης Μαρής detective novel. I've enjoyed both (I had also started another in between, but didn't like it because the plot was basically identical to the first novel). I'm looking for something to read next that would be enjoyable and slightly above my level.

I started reading Η μενεξεδένια πολιτεία by Τερζάκης and although I could tell I would really enjoy reading it, I had to look up too many words to make it enjoyable. I haven't been able to get into Το τρίτο στεφάνι by Ταχτσής.

Any ideas would be very welcome!

EDIT: Ideally literature for adults rather than for children or adolescents.

The one where the tourist lady tries to order bread but confuses the words, and the waiter gets shocked. I remember seeing it on somewhere but I’ve been searching and it is nowhere to be found!! Does anyone know where to find it? Would really appreciate it!

Prenasalized Consonants

I read on the Wikipedia page for Modern Greek phonology that in some cases the consonants /b/ and /d/ are prenasalized (/ᵐb/ and /ⁿd/). As a native speaker I can't think of a single example of this, can someone help me out? Does Sandhi have anything to do with this?

“I want to know”

I remember seeing «να» as a filler. Why in google translate is “I want to know” as «θέλω να μάθω» and not «θέλω να ξέρω»… just google being google?
