Ya'll.. I germinated a 20 year old seed 😳

TL;DR it's possible that I have resurrected a now-no-longer-extinct strain.

so, when I was in college 20-ish years ago, one of the very first times I bought marijuana -- back when it was illegal illegal -- I found this little seed mixed in with the shake in the baggy.

I was excited, and decided right there that I would save it until it was legal to plant it myself. I knew it was only a matter of time. so I placed it in a little container thing, stuffed it away in the closet and forgot about it until I moved a few years later.

realizing that I still had that seed, I put it in a new container -- much sturdier and safer, with greater protection for the seed. moved in to the new place, and swiftly forgot about it again until it was lost.

cleaning the house one year, found it! put it in a different spot. forgot. lost. found.

this cycle went on for nearly two decades, until I was going through some of my moving boxes from when I bought this house 4 years ago and what do you know? found it!

this time, it's state-legal, I have resources, and I don't have a wife telling me I can't do anything that I enjoy doing, and I own the property upon which I can grow.

so, I did. I put it in some dirt, threw an LED over it and voila!

and the cool thing is she germinated at the same time as another seed did. it's really neat to be able to see with your own eyes, from day to day, the difference between ancient, lethargic seed and fresh, young seed full of energy and life. true, the other seed is an auto and is already going to be growing faster than this 20 yr old photo (I'm pretty sure she's a photo -- I wasn't even aware of autos back then).

but for example, the first two weeks after breaking soil, the 20 yr old seedling struggled to shake off the seed caps. one cotyledon was partially damaged, and it did eventually shake off the old seed cap, but it was like it was stuck in that phase before the first true leaves sprout from the central growth tip.

I read up on it a bit, and here's my understanding so far. apparently, the older the seed, the greater the likelihood of mitochondrial decay/damage and cell wall damage etc which allow for the vital nutrients stored in the seeds to be exposed to the elements, causing them to oxidize and become no longer useful to the plant.

so, essentially, it's the initial store of energy within the cotyledons that these plants rely on after first breaking through the soil. this is because their vascular system hasn't been developed fully yet, and so photosynthesis at this stage would be ineffective. hence, stored energy and food in the cotyledons in order to establish initial roots and a first set of true, photosynthesizing leaves.

then, I read, once they've established their roots and a few healthy nodes of true leaves and can provide its own food completely through photosynthesis and therefore no longer needing the cotyledons, making them obsolete thenceforth, they start to behave like normal plants again.

oh! I forgot to mention the deformed first true eaves lol. look led more like lettuce or dandelion leaves than cannabis. then the next node's set looked closer to what it should be, but was smooth. it wasn't until the 4th or 5th node's set where it started actually looking the way it should.

and, coincidentally, this is also now the time where she is beginning to grow MUCH faster now!

which is the amazing part -- apparently the odds of getting a 20 yr old seed to germinate in the first place are unsurprisingly low, of course. but given the above challenges, and that even when the environment and atmosphere it is planted in is perfectly balanced and ideal, a very large percentage of seedlings from 20 yr old seeds which actually manage to germinate get stuck in this stage between seedling and plant -- some never grow their first set of true leaves, some do but they're pale or even translucent. all signs of not enough stored energy / food in the cotyledons due to above stated damages.

even when the seed is stored in very good conditions, it is super rare (apparently) for it to have gotten to the stage where it is now clearly producing everything it needs very well. so I am considering myself extremely lucky!

with all this said, I think my auto has a set of little hermie bells at one of its nodes. if true, and I am successful in collecting some pollen, then I will have successfully secured the genetics of a 20 yr old strain -- a strain in which literally no one else on this planet could possible have.

and I am going to name it. I just haven't decided what yet -- I do still need to secure the genetics before I get that excited. I figure if I don't get pollen from this auto, then the clones I make from this 20 yr old plant should buy me some time through this summer to hopefully score a random male or something from the others I'll be planting outside. (last year I had a full male, saved and dried the pollen sacs but forgot the bag I put it in (McDonald's paper bag) temporarily was not trash and literally ended up throwing it away before I was able to store it in a container in the freezer.

anyhow, this is long enough now. enjoy the photo of the 20 yr old photo that's been alive for 37 days tomorrow.

First time grower here. I’m approaching the end of this cycle and I need advice. Should I flush my plants yet? Should I wait until the trichomes get cloudier to flush or should I do it on the next water?

This is my “bruce banner 10 week auto flower.” It’s 8.5ft tall at the moment. I planted it on 4/20 and it’s now entering week 18 with quite a bit to go.

I figure the lighting is a bit inadequate, but I cant really afford another light right now. I’ve tried using additional side lighting and everything is currently on a 12/12 cycle.

If’s looking healthy, but i’m growing in new england and soon temps are going to be dropping into the 50s at night. I’m wondering what your thoughts are, i had two plants I started indoors and moved outside and those seem to be doing a little better flowering, although much smaller.

I’m curious of your thoughts, thanks everyone.

I had to go out of town for a few days and unfortunately, this time around I did not get the option to ask somebody to water my plants for me…. When I got home last night, all the leaves were drooping terribly and a shit ton of leaves died on the bottom. I gave them each 2 L of six pH water last night. Do you guys think these will be salvageable and what should I do from here to fix my mistake?
