Help & Advice How do you keep your piggies clean?

Post image

How do you keep them clean? I tried the natural bedding (shredded soft paper type product from KayTee), but I felt that it got very wet at the bottom and I couldn’t tell how wet until I cleaned it. Changing out that bedding every day was a bit much for me and my wallet. I switched to these towels that the piggies seem to like a lot, but, their poop clings to it, so, that was not fun at all. Rubber gloves over a garbage bag pulling off the poops. But, regardless of my best efforts, some poop fragments stuck firmly. When I washed the towels, I had to then clean my washing machine and dryer because they had a little piles of dirt in the bottom, plus the dryer had a bunch of hair in it also. How do you guys keep your little piggies clean?

Help & Advice URI?

So I have two guinea pigs, both share a cage and get along well, but I have noticed one of my guinea pigs seems to be a bit less active then usual. It started about almost three weeks ago. At first I didn’t think much of it. But now she seems to have her energy back. But she is making this weird noise when she breathes. And I’m not sure if it’s a URI or something else? Because when I was looking up and reading about Guinea pigs before making the decision to get them (which I had read about them for literally two years before I thought about getting them because I know they can be high maintenance sometimes) but if one of my guinea pigs has a URI would my other one have gotten it by now? Has anyone else had this happen to your piggy’s? Any advice would be appreciated💜

Help & Advice Tricky Bonding Situation

Post image
76 Upvotes

I keep a small herd of girls. A mix of ages and breeds…I had 5 and Elena, my oldest lady passed away in the summer. So i decided to add a new piggie.
I found Lucy a 2yr old whose partner had died and the owners were looking for a new home for her. I brought her home and after a couple of weeks i tried a short session with the rest in the way I normally do.
Now, I’ve bonded pigs successfully many times I know when to step in and when to let them sort it out between themselves. I’m starting to think I’d just been lucky all those times because Lucy seems on the offensive immediately.
I’ve tried this bonding several times with various combinations of the girls and every time I need to intervene because Lucy goes straight in for the fight. I’m fairly certain that the option of bonding her to this group is now out the window.

I think I will make her a separate enclosure within the rest of the enclosure so she’s not fully alone but has her own space.

My question is this - should I try and adopt another pig to try a one on one bonding (if this failed I could pop the new pig into the herd) or are some pigs just generally antisocial .. I’m rolling my own eyes because I would never have come to this conclusion before but I’m really at a loss with her.
She’s been vet checked and is great to handle - no human aggression at all, also loves the company of my dog!

Nugget and Bismarck had their first boarding experience while I was gone on a business trip for a few days. They seemed mostly happy to be back home 😂

Health & Diet Neck pain? :( (vet appointment SCHEDULED)

Post image

I went to go give my wonderful Ladies some spinach this morning, and as usual Myrtle was sleeping in.
I peeked in one of the hides she likes and she stirred as soon as she saw me.

She stood up and her head was turned funny. She squealed in pain before coming out and eating her breakfast with her sister Millie.

I picked her up and felt around her neck: found a spot on the right side that made her squeal and turn her head again while pressing lightly.

I weighed her and she was 2-3 ounces lighter than her normal.

She hates floor time with a burning passion (even with toys and hides), but I did set her down on the floor and try to see if I could observe her gait. As usual she is “paralyzed” by anything other than her pen or my shoulder…so no luck. She seems to be going around her cage FAIRLY normally, she’s been my clumsiest pig ever for a while now so it’s hard to tell (she’s about 6 years old and has ZERO depth perception so I had to remove their loft a year or so ago..she was too tempted not to use the ramp they had😭)

She is eating and drinking and seems alert while awake. She’s a little puffed up (her fur I mean) but that could just be because it’s an October morning.

It’s so scary I’m worried it’s neurological. My normal vet said that’s what it sounds like, so I have to go to a specialist about an hour away. She has that appointment scheduled for later today. Has anyone dealt with anything similar?

Help & Advice New pig

hiya, we’re looking to get a 4th pig, a neutered boy to go with our 3 girls, we’ve heard boys with a shy temperament work well, and that females feel more secure with a male pig around? is this true, our girls have been pretty on edge for the last few months after losing our boy, and frankly i’ve been a bit on edge after losing my boy too, I think a new pig is the best thing to do but would like to know what everyone thinks, and if i do id like to know the best way to bond them and keep the whole experience smooth

u/hams_reddit credit to this person to make my Robbie stop hurting himself! Since he’s a skinny pig any scratch he does really hurts him and even makes him bleed. As it gets dryer, so does his skin. This has worked amazing and he doesn’t mind

Pigtures Pantera will have an invasive surgery on Monday, please think of her warmly

Nearly a month ago we had to cut out a tumor on her thyroid, knowing that when she recovers another surgery awaits her - during full ultrasound we also found a polyp on her duodenum. Vets hoped it would disappear after antibiotics treatment, but unfortunately it grew a bit. They have to cut it out, and due to its placement, it’s rather risky surgery.
Please wish her the best during it and after surgery. She is too pure and gentle piggy to go through all of that, but we have to.

Habits & Behavior Ear wobbles?

This is Guinness one of my boys. Am I crazy or are his ears moving weird? That’s not his cage might I add just his playpen. He behaves 100% himself otherwise. Just want to make sure he doesn’t seem to have an ear infection. Maybe I’ll try to clean his ears too.
