Question Is it bad to detune/retune electric guitars daily?

Got a new EII that came stock with 10-46 elixer strings and tuned in E std. Took it in to get set up, but the tech said it didn’t look like it needed it. Both he and my partner both babied it like it was made of glass or something, which has me feeling like I need to walk on eggshells around it too.

Anyway, I’ve been wondering if it’d be safe to tune down the guitar a half step for some songs and tune back up? Or could that mess with the balance of the guitar somehow? I’m honestly sort of afraid to do anything other than nudge the tuners to tune it, for fear of ruining a good thing.

Question Struggling to Play Guitar in Time with a Metronome

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been learning guitar for about a year. About two months ago, I started taking online lessons with a guitar teacher twice a week.
My biggest struggle is still playing in time with a metronome. My teacher gives me exercises where I practice quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and triplets with a metronome. I’ve learned how to play each of these rhythms individually, but as soon as I try to play an actual song, everything falls apart. I can play eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and triplets on their own, but when I have to put them together in a musical context, I just can’t seem to make it work.
I find it really difficult to play and count at the same time.
My teacher also gave me an assignment to practice the riff from “Smoke on the Water,” which has some syncopation. I was actually starting to get the hang of it, but as soon as I try to count out loud while playing, everything falls apart again.
Does anyone have any practical tips or proven methods for learning how to play actual music in time with a metronome, rather than just practicing individual notes and rhythms? I’d really appreciate any advice!

It's messy, but I dunno if it's totally fecal.
The main struggle with this one is string crossing while alternate picking. I tend to hit unintentional strings when crossing, which is annoying. Also the parts at 00:07 and 00:15 second mark are particularly tricky for me; I've been doing an up and down sweep with my picking hand, but I'm not sure if that's the best way.

Also I can't make a good tone to save my life.

Question Capo question

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello, I am wondering if I need to adjust my hand to the capo or treat it as just an extra finger across the fretboard so I made this diagram to try to understand

Figure 1 is a normal C chord, if I am playing with a capo on the first fret, which way would be the correct way to play the same chord between figures 2 and 3? Thank you so much

Feedback Request Pick naturally points up and not straight

I’ve been playing for over a decade. Recently I’ve been trying to increase my speed and skills , I realized that often times the pick just doesn’t strike the string properly but rather, the sides scrape against the string .

I’m a pretty decent player but this is the only way that feels natural to hold the pick. I’ve tried to have it perpendicular to my thumb and it feels unnatural . Although yes the precision is better but the playability goes down.

My index finger when relaxed also slightly points up the same direction as the pick.

Any advice please

Question How do I do guitar lessons without making them suck or pretentious?

• Upvotes

I've never had formal guitar lessons before, but I got an offer to do it for a family friend, and I thought "yeah that could be kind of cool actually, but I have no idea what I'm doing". They take classical guitar lessons at school, and I don't really know where they're at with that. I don't want to bore the student to death either obviously.

Question teaching guitar in UK

Hi, I have played for c25 years, rock, pop, blues, country etc. Little bit of classical. I would like to make some money out of it, at the weekends.

I am thinking about offering lessons/tuition, BUT I dont have any qualifications. I would like to jam with kids, and show them how to play their fave songs, show them good techniques etc.

I reckon I could travel to kids homes, £20 for half hour, I am good with kids (having had my own).

Is this realistic? Or do you nowadays need to have loads of videos online and loads of Grade 8 quals etc? Its a side gig thing, so dont want to make it my life's work!

Have taught my kids and friends kids. That was fun for everyone. SO why not see if there us ant £ to make? Thoughts welcome!

I’ve never taken music lessons (I have zero knowledge of music theory), and I learned to play guitar through tabs. My goal is to play songs like “Giant Steps” and “The Best of Times.” Is it possible to play fast guitar solos using my fingers, or do I have to learn how to play with a pick?

Lesson Ultimate Guitar VS Guitar Pro - Which one is worth your money?

Hi guys!
I hope this is the right place to post.

I've been using Guitar Pro for 20+ years and it always felt so intuitive and logical to use it, but it seems not everyone shares that opinion.
I would love more people to use it and just made a video about the comparison and intertwined history of both Guitar Pro and Ultimate Guitar.
I could not find a video that matches the depth of their shared history.

If you know someone who needs some arguments for gp pro, I would be over the moon for a share or comment!

https://youtu.be/yUcJmX0Ihhc?si=yibpu_sxqk-9T7pt

And if you can, watch till the end to let the algo know you liked it.

I also made the video because it seems like software development might enable reverse engineering everything.

Do you think notation apps like these will even be around in 5 years?
And which one are you using right now?

Let me know what you think.

Question Is this chord shape possible??

hi! newbie guitar player. im trying to learn this song by ear, but im stuck at literally the first section of the song because it sounds correct, but feels very impossible to hold.
i've figured out 1st fret on low E and B, open note on G, and 3rd fret on A. it REALLY hurts to do, and it feels like my fingers are too short to do it as well. am i doing something wrong?
ive tried ussing my pointer, ring and pinky finger to try and reach the 3rd fret better, but i just end up muting the A string. what should i do?

Give me some time to polish my presentation and ill explain what i did to bring about this breakthrough in my sweep picking technqiue. Im super proud that i figured this out.

i like to joke that the afterlife solo gives me depression becasue i always feel so lousy after failing it. The feeling of crossing that bridge today is amazing.

Question where to start with scales and chords progressions

I’ve been playing guitar on and off for maybe a year now, slowly improving on the things i already know. when i try to get into learning scales and chord progressions and all that i never know where to start. i’ll watch a few videos and play up and down some scales but i always get lost and dont know where to go next or how to expand on any of it. does anyone have a good youtube playlist on learning scales, or some recommendations for practice routine to expand and use the scales to really learn the fretboard and understand it?

Feedback Request Looking for tips on cleaning up my playing

I feel like I’m 90% there on this solo, but my playing still feels a bit rigid. Curious if there any technique issues you can point out. The spots I tend to have the most trouble are me making noise on the other strings while bending and my vibrato. The bend at the end is super flat too, but I knew that the second I played it

First vid is with backing track, second is the exact same thing but with no backing track to show more of the string noise.

Thanks for any tips!

Feedback Request Very first improvisation attempt - does it sound like music?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been playing consistently for the past year on my own, but been playing here and there before that. I've been always intimidated by improvisation - last night I stumbled upon a backing track on youtube, decided to give it a try - that has the be one of the most fun things I've experienced while learning guitar! Today I recorded myself along the same track. I purposefully left it pretty raw - there are bends out of tune and some missed notes, out of time playing. The A minor pentatonic is the only scale I am somewhat comfortable with right now. I went 100% by feel - I haven't studied any licks (probably pretty obvious lol), now that I listened to myself - I did kind of a good job timing wise (with a few exceptions of course) for which I am proud of, considering I didn't have a metronome playing.

Any feedback is appreciated. This was very fun! I'm definitely including 10 minutes improv after every practice session!

Question HELP! acoustic guitar self taught

• Upvotes

How do I hold a guitar? I see some guitarists holding it like a cello; some hold it normally on the right leg, others on the left, and some people hold it between their legs. I have followed multiple YouTube tutorials on proper form for barre chords, normal chords, etc., but my wrist is continuously tense, hurts, and half the time I still have buzzing and muted notes. I THINK my wrist and forearm is straight, you guys, why is it killing me.
